Texas Baseball: Ty Madden among top pitchers in the nation

Texas Longhorns pitcher Ty Madden jumps in the top three leaders in strikeouts after his performance vs. South Carolina.

The Texas Longhorns won game one of their series last night vs. South Carolina by a score of 4-1.

Texas pitcher Ty Madden, the star of the game, has been on a tear early in this season.

Madden pitched 7.0 innings and only allowed 3 hits in the outing. Even more impressive, was his five strikeout performance, which gives him a total of 30 on the season.

Madden is one of the few pitchers in college baseball with 30 or more strikeouts and after his strong outing last night; he sits tied for third in the country in strikeouts.

Only Justin Campbell (32) from Oklahoma State and Hunter Stanley (31) from Southern Miss have more so far this season.

At this rate, Ty Madden’s MLB draft buzz will continue to rise. He’ll likely be on many All-American ballots and up for the school’s first ever National Pitcher of the Year award.

Madden has only pitched 20.0 innings thus far this season, and is likely to pass 50.0 at the rate he’s going. Don’t be surprised if Madden surpasses 60 strikeouts before the postseason begins.

Former Gator Brady Singer shuts down Tigers, continues ascent in majors

Pitcher Brady Singer appears to be quickly maturing in the big leagues thanks to the trial-by-fire offered by the floundering Royals.

Brady Singer is a name that any Florida Gators fan should be familiar with if they have ever paid even a modicum of attention to the baseball program over the past few years. The former national championship-winning pitcher and first-round draft pick has been making waves in the majors this summer in his rookie campaign for the Kansas City Royals. Wednesday night was a glimpse at what the future holds in the bigs for the erstwhile Gators hurler.

His performance in his last start was a continuation of some recent brilliance he has displayed. After beginning his season with a 5.58 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP, giving up at least two runs in each of his first eight starts while throwing at least five innings each outing, Singer has blanked his last two opponents, nearly throwing a no-hitter in his previous start against the heavy-hitting Chicago White Sox and then shutting out the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

His latest triumph was a result of six innings of two-hit ball, in which he gave up a single walk while striking out eight hitters. His efforts these past two games lowered his numbers to a much more respectable 4.14 ERA and and impressive 1.18 WHIP with 52 strikeouts over 54 1/3 innings pitches. Maybe more importantly, he just looked good out on the mound with command over his three-pitch arsenal consisting of a four-seam fastball, a slider and a changeup — all plus pitches.

Singer appears to be quickly maturing in the big leagues thanks to the trial-by-fire offered by the floundering Royals. Hopefully, the former Gator will continue his meteoric ascent in pro ball for the pride of the Gator Nation.

Texas pitcher Miranda Elish has been unstoppable this season amidst leading the Longhorns to a perfect 6-0 record.

As a pitcher, Texas’ Miranda Elish is unstoppable.

But it’s what she does at the plate that makes her one of the best overall players in the nation. Only one week into the 2020 season, Elish has led the Longhorns to a perfect 6-0 record.

In what should be one of many honors this year, Elish was recently named the Big 12 Player of the Week for the first time.

Elish has played a major role in the Longhorns outscoring their opponents 60-6. She currently leads the Big 12 with 17 RBIs and her slash line of .818/.800/2.182 is eye popping.

The senior pitcher has also added on four home runs, including a grand slam, in less than a week of regular season play. On the mound, she has allowed a batting average of .171 and an ERA of 1.40 with 18 strikeouts.
