Georgia’s top-five offensive players for 2021: No. 5 George Pickens (if he plays)

Georgia’s top-five offensive players for 2021: No. 5 George Pickens (if he plays)

If he’s healthy, George Pickens is probably No. 1 on this list.

But with that “if” being so prevalent, we have to proceed with caution. That’s why I’m ranking the 6-foot-3 wide receiver as Georgia’s fifth best offensive player for the 2021 season.

Pickens tore his ACL this offseason and is expected to miss a portion of the college football season. Pickens is ranked one of the top returning receivers in the country. He will be eligible for the 2022 NFL draft.

In eight games last season, Pickens hauled in 36 catches for 513 yards and six touchdowns. Though his overall numbers weren’t as big, he averaged one more catch per game (4.5) and more yards per game (12.2) than as a freshman.

Pickens began his career at Georgia with eight touchdowns and 727 receiving yards as a true freshman.

Pickens came to Athens as a highly touted five-star recruit. He saved his best game for last in 2019. Pickens shredded the Baylor Bears for 175 receiving yards on 12 catches (both career highs) en route to winning MVP honors at the 2020 Sugar Bowl.

Kirby Smart and Georgia will need other receivers to step up in Pickens’ absence. Jermaine Burton, Darnell Washington, Arian Smith, Adonai Mitchell, Dominick Blaylock and Kearis Jackson will play a larger role in games with Pickens out.

The Bulldog offense looked much better to end the 2021 college football season under quarterback J.T. Daniels.

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver/tight end Arik Gilbert transferred to UGA from LSU. Gilbert was a five-star recruit out of Marietta and committed to LSU over Georgia.

Gilbert played one season with the Tigers, but opted out of a few games at the end of the season. He then elected to enter the transfer portal. First, Gilbert committed to the Florida Gators, but he went back on his decision and eventually decided to stay closer to home and play for the Bulldogs.

Kirby Smart and Georgia will need receivers such as Gilbert to step up in George Pickens’ absence (torn ACL). Jermaine Burton, Darnell Washington, Arian Smith, Adonai Mitchell, Dominick Blaylock and Kearis Jackson will play a larger role in games with Pickens out.

The Georgia offense looked much better to end the 2021 college football season under quarterback J.T. Daniels. Arik Gilbert is an excellent pass catcher. It doesn’t matter if he lines up at wide receiver or tight end. Gilbert has the skills to do both.

Arik Gilbert caught 35 passes for 368 yards and found the end zone twice. Gilbert was named to the Freshman All-SEC Team and put up great numbers despite only playing in eight games for several different quarterbacks.

In high school, Gilbert helped lead Marietta to a state championship in 2019 and was named Gatorade National Player of the Year.

Watch: Georgia WR George Pickens gains unlikely first down

After twisting and turning his way past the line to gain, Pickens added ten yards to his school record performance in the Sugar Bowl

Early in the fourth quarter of the 2020 Sugar Bowl, Georgia freshman phenom George Pickens broke six tackles, twelve ankles, and countless Baylor fans’ spirits.

On second and ten with twelve minutes remaining, Jake Fromm threw a routine five-yard pass toward the far sideline to Pickens, who at this point had already amassed 165 receiving yards and a touchdown.

After twisting and turning his way past the line to gain, Pickens added ten yards to his school record performance in the Sugar Bowl.

Watch a freak athlete do freaky athletic things:

George Pickens to miss first half of SEC Championship Game

Georgia freshman WR George Pickens will be suspended for the first half of next week’s SEC Championship Game against LSU in Atlanta.

Following a less-than-civil confrontation in today’s beating of the Bees, Georgia freshman wide receiver George Pickens will be suspended for the first half of next week’s SEC Championship Game against Louisiana State in Atlanta.

Kirby Smart confirmed the suspension in his post-game press conference following a 45-point win at Georgia Tech.

Jim Coley’s offense will already be without the injured Lawrence Cager, who leads the team with 476 receiving yards in 2019.

Pickens is only 19 yards behind with one fewer reception (32) and one more touchdown (5) than Cager.

The freshman out of Hoover, Alabama was previously suspended for the first half of today’s game against Georgia Tech for a “team matter” upon which Kirby Smart would not elaborate.

Missing two of the biggest deep threats on the roster, the Bulldogs offense will need to get creative in the first half of the looming conference championship.
