Philadelphia Flyers at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Monday’s Philadelphia Flyers at Detroit Red Wings sports betting odds and lines, with NBA betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Philadelphia Flyers (28-17-7) visit the Detroit Red Wings (12-37-4) Monday at Little Caesars Arena for a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Flyers-Red Wings sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Flyers at Red Wings: Projected starting goalies

Brian Elliott vs. Jonathan Bernier

Elliott is coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins Friday. He didn’t suffer a regulation loss in five January starts and is now 12-5-4 on the season through 21 starts and four relief appearances. He has a .901 save percentage and 2.94 goals against average.

Bernier returned to the net Saturday for his first start since Jan. 10, and took the loss against the New York Rangers despite stopping 30 of 31 shots on goal. He is 10-13-2 on the season with a .907 SV% and 2.92 GAA.

Prediction

Flyers 3, Red Wings 1

Moneyline (ML)

The FLYERS (-222) are a safe enough play Monday I’m willing to swallow the fair amount of chalk involved with the moneyline odds. Philly is 6-2-2 across its last 10 games, but just 10-13-3 on the road for the season. It’s coming off a 6-3 home win over the Colorado Avalanche after splitting a home-and-home with the rival Pittsburgh Penguins on both ends of the all-star break.

The Red Wings (+180) remain huge underdogs, even on home ice. While the return of Bernier helps stem some of the problems on the defensive end, LW Filip Zadina (lower body) joined the long list of injured forwards after Saturday’s game. The Wings are riding an eight-game losing skid and are just 8-17-2 on home ice.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

When betting against the Red Wings, it has been best to skip on the moneyline in favor of higher odds on the spread. Back the FLYERS (-1.5, +125) to win by at least 2 goals Monday with the advantage in every area of the ice. The Flyers are 30-22 ATS overall and 12-14 on the road, while the Wings are 21-32 ATS overall and 11-16 at home.

Philly claimed a 6-1 victory over Detroit Nov. 29 in the season’s only head-to-head meeting thus far.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 5.5 (+115). The Flyers are 5-5 against the Over/Under across their last 10 games, while the Wings are 4-5-1 against the projected goal totals. Detroit has scored more than two goals just once in its last eight games.

Colorado Avalanche at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Colorado Avalanche at Philadelphia Flyers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Philadelphia Flyers (27-17-7) host the Colorado Avalanche (28-15-6) Saturday at Wells Fargo Center for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Avalanche-Flyers sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Avalanche at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Philipp Grubauer vs. Alex Lyon

Grubauer won each of his last two starts prior to the All-Star break and returns to action with a 14-10-4 record on the season. He has a .910 save percentage and 2.82 goals against average.

Lyon will make his second start of the season while backing up Brian Elliott with Carter Hart sidelined by injury. He gave up four goals on 40 shots in a loss to the Montreal Canadiens his last time out.

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Flyers 3

Moneyline (ML)

Back the AVALANCHE (-162) as sizable favorites on the road. Colorado is coming off a 6-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings Monday, while the Flyers lost 4-3 in overtime to the Pittsburgh Penguins Friday. The Avs are 5-3-2 over their last 10 games, on a three-game winning streak and 14-8-2 on the road for the season.

The Flyers are 5-3-2 across their last 10 games and 17-4-4 at home, but they went to extra time Friday and are completing a back-to-back, and they’ll have their third-string goaltender between the pipes. Back the visitors.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Avalanche to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $6.17.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Increase your profit margin and back the AVALANCHE (-1.5, +170) to win by at least 2 goals. The Avs are 29-20 against the spread overall and 16-8 on the road, while the Flyers are 29-22 ATS overall and 17-8 at home. This comes down to the goaltending matchup, and it’s a safe bet to bet against Lyon.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the alternate line and back the OVER 6.5 (+135). It’s more profitable than the base line of 5.5 which pays just -150 for the Over. The Avs have topped the goals projection in seven of their last 10 games, while the Flyers are 5-5 against the O/U across their last 10 games.

Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

One of hockey’s most exciting rivalries resumes Friday as the Philadelphia Flyers (27-17-6) hook up with the Pittsburgh Penguins (31-14-5) in a Metropolitan Division clash. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at PPG Paints Arena. We analyze the Flyers-Penguins sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Flyers at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Brian Elliott vs. Matt Murray

Elliott enters Friday on a personal three-game winning streak, as he continues to cover for the injured Carter Hart. Elliott is now 12-5-3 on the season with a .904 save percentage and 2.89 goals against average. He made 19 saves in a shutout over these Penguins Jan. 21.

Murray has won five straight starts to get to 15-6-4 on the season. He has a .900 SV% and 2.84 GAA. Both rates are still much worse than his career averages, but January has been, by far, his best month of the season.

Prediction

Flyers 3, Penguins 2

Moneyline (ML)

Give me the value with the FLYERS (+145). These games are typically high-scoring, opening the door to chance, and rust will be a factor with this being the first game for both sides since a head-to-head meeting Jan. 21. The Flyers claimed a 3-0 victory with a stout defensive effort in the last meeting. The Penguins (-175) are getting far too much respect after being blanked by their rivals less than two weeks ago.

Philadelphia has won its last two games. Pittsburgh is 18-5-3 on home ice this season, while Philly is just 10-13-2 on the road, but Elliott has been strong this season and of late. Murray is on an impressive streak, but he hasn’t been his usual self in 2019-20. It’s a good spot to chase the value.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Flyers to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $14.50. The same bet on the Penguins nets just $5.70 in profit.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The safer play is backing the FLYERS (+1.5, -189) to either lose by just 1 goal or win outright. Pittsburgh’s last two victories came by just 1-goal margins. Three of their last seven games ended in overtime or a shootout.

Philly is 28-22 against the spread overall and 11-14 on the road. Pittsburgh is 24-26 ATS overall and just 11-15 at home.

Over/Under (O/U)

Go with the UNDER 5.5 (+120). Both teams are just 5-5 against the Over/Under across their last 10 games, and the lengthy rest as a result of the all-star break will lead to some sloppy play on both sides.

Esten’s NHL betting record: 189-178

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (31-13-5) renew acquaintances with the Philadelphia Flyers (26-17-6) Tuesday at Wells Fargo Center for a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Penguins-Flyers sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Penguins at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Matt Murray vs. Brian Elliott

Murray has won five straight starts, including Sunday’s game against the Boston Bruins in which he stopped 35 of 38 shots. He is now 15-6-4 on the season with a .900 save percentage and 2.84 goals against average.

Elliott has been getting some extra run with starter Carter Hart on the shelf. The 34-year-old veteran is 11-5-3 on the season with a .901 SV% and 3.03 GAA. He stopped 34 of 35 shots Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings.

Prediction

Flyers 5, Penguins 4

Moneyline (ML)

Take the value with the discounted FLYERS (+120) at home. Philly is just 4-5-1 over its last 10 games but is coming off the win over the Kings and is 16-4-4 at Wells Fargo Center for the season. The Penguins (-143) are a little too expensive entering this rivalry game. They’ve won seven of their last 10 games and are 18-6-1 on the road for the season. They also claimed a 7-1 victory in Pittsburgh in the season’s first head-to-head meeting.

The two teams are neck-and-neck in Corsi For Percentage (percentage of total shot attempts) at 5-on-5, but Pittsburgh has the edge in scoring chances.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Flyers to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $12.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Eat a little bit of chalk and back the FLYERS (+1.5, -222) to either lose by a single goal or win outright. The Flyers are 27-22 against the spread overall and 16-8 on home ice, while the Pens are 24-25 ATS overall and 13-10 on the road. The moneyline is a much more profitable play, but the puck line offers a little insurance and is a worthwhile secondary play.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 5.5 (-149) for a total of 6 or more goals to be scored in Philly Tuesday night. The Penguins are 5-5 against the Over/Under across their last 10 games. The Flyers are 6-4 over their last 10. The two teams combined to top this projection in eight of their last 10 head-to-head games.

Los Angeles Kings at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Los Angeles Kings at Philadelphia Flyers sports betting odds, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings (18-26-5) visit the City of Brotherly Love to face off against the Philadelphia Flyers (25-17-6) for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Kings-Flyers odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Kings at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Quick vs. Brian Elliott

Quick has struggled recently, losing six of his last seven games, including a 4-3 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning Jan. 14. He now sits at 11-17-3 with a .896 save percentage and 3.01 goals against average on the season.

Elliott picked up a 4-3 overtime victory over the defending Stanley Cup champions St. Louis Blues Wednesday. He stopped 30 of 33 shot attempts. The win pushed Elliott to 10-5-3 with a .897 SV% and 3.14 GAA.

Prediction

Kings 3, Flyers 1

Moneyline (ML)

Neither team has played well recently—the Kings are 3-7 straight up in their last 10 games and the Flyers are 4-6—but we have to back the KINGS (+150) here because their best players show out in Philadelphia. Captain Anze Kopitar is 11-0 with eight goals scored when playing in Philly. Quick should be excited to play in Philadelphia as the Kings have earned a point in every game he’s started there, winning six out of seven, with only one OT loss in 2014.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Kings have a 26-15 against the spread record while the Flyers are just 7-13 when laying 1.5 goals. While the Kings are ranked 27th in goals scored, they do a good job creating chances—ranked eight in scoring chances for—and should be able to capitalize against a team they’ve owned recently. Also, the Kings have a clear edge in 5-on-5 play; the Kings are ranked fourth in Corsi For percentage (percent of all shot attempts), while the Flyers rank 11th.

It’s wise to take KINGS (+1.5, -182) for a little insurance on our puck line wager.

Over/Under (O/U)

Trends point to UNDER 5.5 (+105) in the Kings-Flyers game. The Under is 13-4-3 in the last 20 meetings and 9-1-3 in the last 13 games in Philadelphia. Furthermore, both teams are below average in goals scored per game—the Flyers rank 16th and the Kings rank 25th.

Montreal Canadiens at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Montreal Canadiens at Philadelphia Flyers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Montreal Canadiens (20-21-7) visit the Philadelphia Flyers (25-16-6) Thursday at Wells Fargo Center for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Canadiens-Flyers sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Canadiens at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price vs. Alex Lyon

Price has strung together a rare pair of wins, including a 31-save shutout of the Calgary Flames Monday. He allowed just one goal over 73 shots faced in those two outings combined, but he has still allowed a league-high 107 goals this season while going 18-16-4 through 38 games. He has a .907 save percentage and 2.87 goals against average.

Lyon is expected to see his first NHL action of the season with starter Carter Hart slated to a miss a couple of weeks due to an abdominal strain. Backup Brian Elliott drew the start for Wednesday’s win over the St. Louis Blues. Lyon is 4-3-1 through 13 NHL games (eight starts) with a .806 SV% and 5.08 GAA.

Prediction

Canadiens 5, Flyers 2

Moneyline (ML)

Even with a dramatic advantage in the crease, the CANADIENS (+135) are significant road underdogs. Both teams played Wednesday, with the Flyers (-167) beating the defending-champion Blues 4-3 in overtime and the Habs losing 4-1 to the Chicago Blackhawks. Montreal is 2-7-1 across its last 10 games but a solid 11-9-3 on the road for the season. Philly is 4-5-1 across its last 10 and 15-3-4 at home, but a huge part of that record has been the home play of Hart.

The Habs have a slight rest advantage after the Flyers were forced into overtime Wednesday, but this comes down to the battle in goal. Price is finally back to proper form, and Lyon will be grossly overmatched in his season debut.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

While the Montreal puck line of -200 to cover +1.5 and either lose by 1 or win outright is a stomachable play at low odds, we’ll get better value on the alternate line. Back the CANADIENS (-1.5, +350) to win by at least 2 goals.

The Habs are just 23-25 against the spread overall but 15-8 on the road. Philly is 26-21 ATS overall and 15-7 at home, but again, Hart is the one deserving the bulk of the credit for the home record.

Over/Under (O/U)

Following the logic of above, back the OVER 5.5 (-149) with the expectation of the Canadiens breaking out of their offensive struggles in a plush matchup against Lyon. The Flyers are 7-3 against the Over/Under across their last 10 games and will be able to pot a couple against Price, but Montreal does the heavy lifting here.

Flyers at Blues: Projected starting goalies

Brian Elliott vs. Jordan Binnington

Elliott is coming off a shootout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes last Tuesday in which he allowed five goals on 33 shots in regulation. He is 9-5-3 on the season with a .896 save percentage and 3.16 goals against average.

Binnington enters Wednesday on a personal three-game winning streak, but he didn’t face 30 shots in any of those three games. He is 22-7-4 on the season with a .917 SV% and 2.47 GAA.

Prediction

Blues 4, Flyers 2

Moneyline (ML)

The BLUES (-200) come into the day on a four-game winning streak. They’re 17-4-3 at home for the season and 7-2-1 across their last 10 games. The Flyers (+165) topped the Boston Bruins 6-5 in a shootout Monday. They’re 4-5-1 across their last 10 games but are just 9-13-2 on the road for the season.

The Flyers have slight advantages in both Corsi (percentage of total shot attempts) and scoring chances, but Binnington gets a significant edge over Elliott. Back the hosts.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the Blues to win would return a profit of $5.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Each of the Blues’ last three victories – all at home – were decided by margins of at least 2 goals. Back ST. LOUIS (-1.5, +140) to win by at least 2 once again Wednesday.

The Flyers are 25-21 against the spread overall but just 10-14 on the road. The Blues are 24-23 ATS overall and 11-13 at home. Five of the Blues’ last seven home wins were by at least 2 goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 5.5 (-139) with Elliott in net for the Flyers as opposed to starter Carter Hart. The Blues are 5-5 against the total across their last 10 games, while the Flyers are 6-3-1 across their last 10.

Brad Marchand cost the Bruins a game with the worst penalty shootout ‘attempt’ you’ll ever see

Brad Marchand forgot the puck!

The National Hockey League made penalty shootouts a thing at the end of tie games way back in the 2005-06 season and while I admittedly haven’t seen every attempt since then, I do feel comfortable in saying that Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand had the worst attempt in NHL history on Monday night.

How can I feel so sure about something as serious as this? Well, I do know one of the most important things about attempting a penalty shot is bringing the puck down the ice with you, which is what Marchand failed to do against the Philadelphia Flyers.

And it led to a loss for his his team.

Check out this incredibly embarrassing fail by Marchand:

He forgot the puck! But since he touched the puck it was ruled an attempt. The Flyers won the game on the next attempt.

Ouch.

Twitter roasted him:

Previewing Monday’s Boston Bruins at Philadelphia Flyers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Philadelphia Flyers (23-16-6) host the Boston Bruins (27-8-11) Monday at Wells Fargo Center. Puck drop is set for shortly after 7:00 p.m. ET. We analyze the Bruins-Flyers sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Bruins at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Tuukka Rask vs. Carter Hart

Rask has won four of his last five starts to improve to 17-4-6 on the season through 27 starts. He has a .925 save percentage and 2.27 goals against average. He has been slightly worse on the road with a 7-4-0 record, .925 SV% and 2.38 GAA.

Hart is coming off a loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday in which he allowed just one goal on 28 shots. He is now 14-11-3 on the season with a .908 SV% and 2.53 GAA, though those numbers improve dramatically to .947 and 1.49 at home.

Prediction

Flyers 3, Bruins 2

Moneyline (ML)

The FLYERS (+110) are to be backed whenever they’re offering plus-money on home ice with Hart between the pipes. He is one of the best goaltenders in the league when at home, and the Flyers are 14-3-4 at Wells Fargo Center as a result. The Bruins (-134) are 12-6-2 on the road and on a three-game winning streak, but they had previously lost three in a row and 11 of 15 games.

Philadelphia has the edge in both Corsi (percentage of all shot attempts) and scoring chances at 5-on-5. Philly won the season’s first head-to-head meeting 3-2 in a shootout in Boston Nov. 10.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Flyers to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $11.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Swallow a little bit of chalk and back the FLYERS (+1.5, -250) to either lose by just 1 goal or win outright for extra insurance.

The Flyers are 24-21 against the spread overall and 14-7 at home, while the Bruins are 21-25 ATS overall and 11-9 on the road. The moneyline play is much more profitable, as the same $10 bet here fetches a profit of just $4.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 5.5 (+105). I already would’ve leaned this way based on the elite goaltending matchup, but the plus-money makes it even more enticing. The two teams are a combined 10-8-2 against the Over/Under across their respective last 10 games. They fell short of this number in the season’s first meeting.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Philadelphia Flyers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (26-13-4) visit the Philadelphia Flyers (23-15-6) at Wells Fargo Center Saturday for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Lightning-Flyers sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Lightning at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy vs. Carter Hart

Vasilevskiy enters the day on a personal seven-game winning streak, which has improved his season record to 21-9-2 through 32 games. He has a .913 save percentage and 2.66 goals against average.

Hart stopped 26 of 28 shots in a win over the Washington Capitals Wednesday. He is 14-10-3 for the season with a .906 SV% and 2.58 GAA. He has been nearly automatic at home with a .945 SV% and 1.52 GAA.

Prediction

Flyers 2, Lightning 1

Moneyline (ML)

The Lightning (-154) have won a season-high nine straight games, most recently beating the Arizona Coyotes 4-0 Thursday in the team’s first shutout victory of the season. The FLYERS (+125) are attractive home underdogs, due largely to Hart’s incredible home splits. Philly’s last game was the 3-2 win over the Capitals Wednesday, which improved the Flyers’ home record to 14-2-4 for the campaign.

Take the value on the home team as the books and public put too much respect on teams with long winning streaks. This is the first head-to-head meeting of the season.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Flyers to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $12.50.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The FLYERS (+1.5, -208) can also be backed on the spread for one goal of insurance in the event of a loss. I much prefer the more profitable moneyline play to the chalk involved in the puck line, but the price is still higher than it should be and returns an adequate $4.08 on a $10 bet.

Philly is 23-21 against the spread overall but 13-7 at home. The Lightning are just 18-25 ATS overall and 9-11 on the road.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 6.5 (-139) on a high number. Vasilevskiy is back to his Vezina Trophy form, and Hart’s one of the best goalies in the NHL when at home.

Esten’s NHL betting record: 160-145
