How to bet Rory McIlroy at The Players Championship: Outright odds & props

Looking at Rory McIlroy’s chances of success at the 2020 Players Championship, including PGA Tour betting options within the tournament.

Rory McIlroy looks to defend his title at the 2020 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass as the No. 1 golfer in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings. McIlroy is the No. 1 betting favorite among the 144-man field at BetMGM this week. Below, we look at McIlroy’s outright and prop betting odds and look for the best value plays for the world’s top golfer at The Players Championship.

Rory McIlroy’s history at TPC Sawgrass

McIlroy ranks 11th in this week’s field in average strokes gained per round at TPC Sawgrass among those with at least 10 rounds played, according to Data Golf. He has gained 1.68 strokes per round across 32 career rounds on the Stadium Course. Last year, he led the field with 3.32 Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green per round while ranking third in SG: Off the Tee.

Last year’s victory followed a missed cut at the 2018 Players Championship. He previously finished T-8 in 2015, T-12 in 2016 and T-35 in 2017. His finishing score of 16-under par last year matched the second-lowest four-round score of the last decade.

Rory McIlroy’s key stats for The Players Championship

Based on historical tournament data from Fantasy National, my key stats for the week are:

  • Strokes Gained: Ball Striking
  • Strokes Gained: Around the Green
  • Opportunities Gained
  • Greens in Regulation Gained
  • Proximity from 125-150 Yards

McIlroy leads my stat model, which measures the last 36 rounds for each golfer in the field on courses shorter than 7,200 yards. While he’s one of the longest hitters on Tour, much of his career success has come on these shorter tracks.

He’s second in the field in SG: Ball Striking, third in Opportunities Gained and fourth in SG: Around the Green. Each of the last 11 champions at TPC Sawgrass finished 10-under par or below, and nine of his 16 PGA Tour rounds in 2020 have been scored in the 60s.

Rory has been struggling with his putter of late, preventing him from reaching the winner’s circle, but he gained a total of just 0.7 strokes putting last year and needs to be little more than average with the flat stick at this venue. He putts best on the Bermuda greens featured here.

As noted above, McIlroy is the No. 1 favorite to win the 2020 Players Championship at +700. He enters this week with seven consecutive top-five finishes with his first win of the 2019-20 PGA Tour season coming at the WGC-HSBC Champions in November. He has racked up three straight fifth-place results, nearly mirroring his form entering last year’s tournament:

EVENT 2019 2020
Farmers Insurance Open T-5 T-3
Genesis Open/Invitational T-4 T-5
WGC-Mexico Championship 2 5
Arnold Palmer Invitational T-6 T-5
The Players 1 ?

Rory is a very chalky golf bet as the No. 1 favorite in the field and the only player priced lower than +1200, but he has enjoyed a similar build-up as last year, and he already has his first win of the season under his belt. He’s worth a multi-unit wager in his quest to repeat.

Who’ll finish in the Top 10? (+100)

Even money for a top-10 result is an easy choice, as the odds for a top-5 finish are just +190. McIlroy hasn’t finished outside the top-10 in a PGA Tour event since his T-19 showing at last year’s BMW PGA Championship one week prior to his victory at the Tour Championship.

Lowest Score Over 72 Holes – Group A (+160)

PASS on this prop bet. If Rory is not going to win this week, it’s likely the winner will come from this group including Jon Rahm (+300), Justin Thomas (+400), Tommy Fleetwood (+700) and Bryson DeChambeau (+600). Take his more profitable outright odds, instead.

Top European Player (+225)

While Rory faces tough competition from Rahm (+350) and Fleetwood (+700) in this group, it does weed out the strong American contingent playing this week. It’s a good hedge against the outright bet.

How to bet Tiger Woods at the Genesis Invitational: Outright odds & props

Looking at Tiger Woods’ chances of success at the 2020 Genesis Invitational, including PGA Tour betting options within the tournament.

Tiger Woods will take his second attempt at breaking the PGA Tour’s all-time wins records this week when he tees it up at the 2020 Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. He’ll be competing against the strongest PGA Tour field of the year to date.

We look at Tiger’s chances of claiming his 83rd career victory, with PGA Tour betting odds and picks for the 2020 Genesis Invitational.

Tiger Woods’ history at Riviera Country Club

Woods, the tournament host, has never won at Riviera Country Club, which has hosted an annual event since 1999. He was a co-runner-up in ’99, finishing two strokes behind Ernie Els in a tie with Davis Love III and Ted Tryba. He didn’t play in the 1995 PGA Championship held at Riviera.

Tiger finished in a tie for 15th last year, two months before his Masters win, but he missed the cut in 2018 in his first appearance since withdrawing from the 2006 Nissan Open. He has made 12 career appearances at Riviera without a win.

Tiger Woods’ key stats for the Genesis Invitational

Based on historical tournament data from Fantasy National, my key stats for the week are:

  • Strokes Gained: Ball Striking
  • Strokes Gained: Around the Green
  • Birdies Gained
  • Driving Distance Gained
  • Par 4 Efficiency 450-500 Yards

The model looks at the last 50 rounds on courses between 7,200 and 7,400 yards.

Tiger ranks eighth by the overall stat model with a top rank of 10th in Birdies Gained. He’s one spot behind Adam Scott and a spot ahead of Jon Rahm. His worst field rank is a 48th in Par 4 Efficiency on the longer holes.

Woods is +1600 to win the 2020 Genesis Invitational, entering the week as the fifth favorite. While it’s a better number than he had at the Farmers Insurance Open (+1100) for his 2020 debut at Torrey Pines (a course which he’s had much more success at) there are better options with more enticing odds. Brooks Koepka, ranked No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is +2000 to win outright. Three-time Riviera champ Bubba Watson is +2200.

I would rather back Woods at +175 to finish in the Top 10. This is a loaded 120-man field featuring eight of the top 10 golfers in the world, and there are other values with better course history. It’s a good week to play it a little safer with Tiger as he ramps up his preparation for the 2020 Masters Tournament.

Woods, ranked eighth in the OWGR to begin the week, is in a group with Rory McIlroy (1), Jon Rahm (3), Justin Thomas (4) and Dustin Johnson (5). Accordingly, he has the longest odds of the five golfers in Group A at +500. I like this number less than the outright odds, as the winner is most likely to come from this group. PASS.

For head-to-head betting, Tiger (+100) is paired against Johnson (-125), who won the then-Genesis Open by a five-stroke margin at 17-under par in 2017. There is value in backing the two to tie at +1600. It’s my favorite play for Tiger this week.

How to bet Tiger Woods at the Farmers Insurance Open: Outright odds & props

Looking at Tiger Woods’ chances of success at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open, including PGA Tour betting options within the tournament.

Tiger Woods is shooting for solo control of the PGA Tour’s all-time wins record this week at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course, as he competes against many of the world’s top golfers in his 2020 debut. Below, we’ll look at Tiger’s betting odds to win the Farmers Insurance Open outright and on the various prop bets available within the tournament.

Tiger Woods’ history at Torrey Pines

Torrey Pines is well known as a favorite course of Tiger’s. He has won this event a record seven times, as well as the 2008 US Open, also held at this venue. Per Data Golf, no member of this week’s field has gained more strokes per round at Torrey Pines (South) than Tiger’s 3.12 across 47 rounds.

He has played here each of the last three years. After a rare missed cut in 2017, he finished T-23 in 2018 and T-20 last year, three months ahead of his fifth career win at the Masters.

Tiger Woods’ key stats for the Farmers Insurance Open

Based on historical tournament data from Fantasy National, my key stats for the week are:

  • Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green
  • Strokes Gained: Ball Striking
  • Birdies or Better Gained
  • Good Drives Gained
  • Proximity from 150-175 Yards
  • Sand Saves Gained

The model looks at the last 36 rounds on courses longer than 7,400 yards.

Tiger ranks 28th in the field by the model with a top rank of sixth in Birdies or Better Gained. His play from the sand has been the weakest part of his game of late, and he struggles relative to the field from the key proximity distance.

Outright odds for the Farmers Insurance Open

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. ET.

With a win already under his belt early in the 2019-20 PGA Tour season (Zozo Championship) and a record 83rd career win in sight, I’m betting Tiger to win the Farmers Insurance Open. At +1100 at BetMGM, he’s the sportsbook’s No. 3 favorite behind Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, who rank No. 2 and 3, respectively, in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Tiger enters the week ranked sixth in the world. His lighter schedule of late makes the stat model less representative of his current play. He is a contender whenever he’s in the field, and that’s doubly true at Torrey Pines. These odds are tolerable early in the season with a $10 bet on Tiger to win the tournament returning a profit of $110.

I’m looking to bet Tiger only to win the tournament outright. Due to his already low odds there, he’s lacking the necessary value on any other wager.

A top-5 finish is paying out at just +275. A top-10 result is only +125. In group betting, Tiger is lumped in with Rahm, McIlroy, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele. Those are his four top competitors, by the OWGR measure and the betting odds. Take the higher odds at +1100 for the outright win with the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open champion most likely to come from within this group.
