Pair of Chargers named to PFWA’s 2023 All-Rookie team

Two Chargers rookies were recognized for their efforts this past season.

The Chargers got quite a bit of production from a pair of rookies this past season.

Those two were edge defender Tuli Tuipulotu and wide receiver Derius Davis, who were named to the 2023 All-Rookie team, voted by the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA).

Tuipulotu, the former second-round pick, was a monster off the edge, finishing with the second-most quarterback pressures among rookies (51) and an 88.4 run defense grade that only trailed greats Maxx Crosby, DeMarcus Lawrence and Khalil Mack.

Davis was drafted in the fourth round for his special teams skills, and it materialized in his first year as a pro, finishing with 24 returned punts for 385 total yards, second-most in the NFL.

Davis’ punt return average of 16.0 ranked first in the league, and he was one of eight players to return a punt for a touchdown, which came in Week 9 against the Jets on Monday Night Football.

Colts’ Dallis Flowers named to PFWA All-Rookie team

Dallis Flowers was electric on kick returns.

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Dallis Flowers was named to the Pro Football Writers of America’s 2022 All-Rookie team, which was announced this week.

The undrafted rookie out of Pittsburg State made a name for himself on special teams as a kick returner. His electric return game made an immediate impact as he led the NFL in yards per kick return (31.1) and was fourth in total kick return yards (715) on 23 returns.

Flowers was the only qualified returner to average more than 30 yards per return this season, and that’s after taking over the role during the second half of the season. The rookie didn’t log his first official kick return until Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers when he ripped off an 89-yard return.

Flowers didn’t see much work on the defensive side of the ball, but he did see an increase in playing time during the final month of the season. He made his first start in Week 18 against the Houston Texans.

Flowers certainly carved out a role on special teams and has proven to be an electric player on kick returns.

Houston Texans safety Jalen Pitre named to PFWA all-rookie team

Houston Texans second-round safety Jalen Pitre was named to the 2022 PFWA all-rookie team.

The Houston Texans can hang their hat on getting at least one 2022 draft pick right.

The Pro Football Writers of America announced their annual all-rookie team, and the Texans’ Jalen Pitre qualified as one of the two safeties. The other safety was the Baltimore Ravens’ Kyle Hamilton, who was equally coveted in the draft process.

Pitre, the No. 37 overall pick in Round 2 from Baylor, generated 147 combined tackles, 99 of them solo, five tackles for loss, a quarterback hit, 1.0 sack, five interceptions, eight pass breakups, and a forced fumble through 17 starts.

New York Jets cornerback Ahmad Gardner and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tariq Woolen were the rookie corners on the team.

The Atlanta Falcons’ Tyler Allgeier and the Seattle Seahawks’ Kenneth Walker were the two rookie running backs on the team.

Raiders G Dylan Parham named to PFWA All-Rookie Team

Dylan Parham makes the PFWA All-Rookie Team

Monday the Pro Football Writers of America put out their All-NFL, All-AFC, and All-NFC teams. The Raiders had players on both the All-NFL and All-AFC teams. Today another of their players gets a mention.

Today PFWA put out their All-Rookie team and Raiders G Dylan Parham made the team.

Parham was the team’s top pick in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He started all 17 games this season, first splitting time between center and right guard before settling in at left guard the final 13 games of the season.

The Pro Football Writers of America continue to announce their on-field awards for the 2021 NFL season.

Accredited writers covering all 32 NFL teams have voted on their annual All-Rookie Team. Three rookies of the Kansas City Chiefs have been recognized among the best at their position in their inaugural season in the NFL. The Chiefs tied the Cleveland Browns and the Miami Dolphins for the teams with the most rookies selected to All-Rookie Team.

Teammates in the trenches, Chiefs’ second-round draft pick Creed Humphrey and sixth-round draft pick Trey Smith were both recognized among the best rookies at their respective positions. Humphrey was the only center selected while Smith joined New York Jets LG Alijah Vera-Tucker. Humphrey and Smith became just the third pair of Chiefs teammates to start every single game of their rookie season. They both excelled in the running game and the passing game to cement what has been one of the best offensive lines in the league.

On the defensive side of the ball, rookie LB Nick Bolton joined Humphrey and Smith. He was one of three linebackers named to the All-Rookie team alongside Brown LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koromoah and Dallas Cowboys LB Micah Parsons. Bolton appeared in 16 games for the Chiefs this season, starting in 12 of those games. He led the Chiefs in tackles (112) and tackles for loss (11).

2021 has proved to be one of the best draft classes from Kansas City in recent memory. Bolton, Smith and Humphrey are sure to be foundational pieces for the team for a long time.

3 Browns earn spots on the PFWA all-rookie team

The Browns first two draft picks from 2021 had very good rookie campaigns

Three members of the Cleveland Browns draft class of 2021 did well enough for themselves to earn spots on the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) all-rookie team.

The trio includes the team’s first two selections in the 2021 NFL draft, CB Greg Newsome and LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. They were joined by sixth-round RB Demetric Felton, who earned his way on the team as the punt return specialist.

Newsome, the No. 26 overall pick from Northwestern, started 10 of the 11 games he played while missing six with injuries. He registered 37 tackles and nine PDs. Owusu-Koramoah finished second on the team with 76 total tackles in 14 games. Felton led all rookies in both punt return yards and average.

The full all-rookie team from the PFWA press release,

In full disclosure, I am a PFWA voter and did vote for Newsome, Owusu-Koramoah and Felton.

Three Dolphins named to the 2021 PFWA All-Rookie Team

These rookies had a great season.

The Miami Dolphins may have failed to make the playoffs, but the 2021 season proved that they have some promising, young players to build around on their roster.

Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, safety Jevon Holland, and linebacker Jaelan Phillips all played so well in their first year that they’ve earned the honor of being named to the PFWA’s All-Rookie Team.

Waddle, named the second wide receiver behind Cincinnati Bengals wideout Ja’Marr Chase, had an exceptional season that resulted in him breaking multiple franchise records and the NFL’s rookie record for receptions. He did this all as the focal point for an offense that struggled for much of the season, so it’s that much more impressive.

Holland was the top safety in this class, according to the PFWA, as he beat out the Las Vegas Raiders’ Tre’Von Moehrig. While he might not have broken records in his first year, Holland’s impact was felt in nearly every game. He was always making a big hit, putting pressure on the quarterback, or forcing a turnover.

Phillips hasn’t been talked about as much, but his production in his rookie season was still impressive. He finished the year with eight sacks, the most by any rookie in Dolphins history, but that number doesn’t tell the whole story, as he was constantly getting pressure on the quarterback. If he can force quarterbacks to hurry a throw or force them into another defender’s grasp, that’s just as important as taking him down.

All three players have extremely bright futures in the league, and if they can put the right pieces around them, Miami might have a chance to make a run at some point.

Raiders S Tre’Von Moehrig named to PFWA All-Rookie team, CB Nate Hobbs snubbed

Raiders got a rookie on the PFWA All-Rookie team, though perhaps not the most deserving

As the Pro Football Writers of America rolls out their awards, the latest is the Rookies of the Year and the All-Rookie Team. The Raiders already had a few All-NFL and All-AFC players. And they land a player on the All-Rookie team as well.

Tre’Von Moehrig has made the PFWA All-Rookie team at safety along with Dolphins’ Jevon Holland.

Moehrig was also on the Pro Football Focus All-Rookie team as he and Holland were the only full time rookie safeties in the NFL this season.

Rookie CB Nate Hobbs deserved a shot at the team as he had more tackles than either Patrick Surtain II or Greg Newsome II. While Surtain did have four picks, Newsome had none. But they were both first round picks, so they are thought of more than a fifth round pick like Hobbs.

Here is the full listing of PFWA picks:

Bears shut out from PFWA All-Rookie Team

The Bears 2019 draft class was disappointing, and they had no rookies selected to the 2019 Pro Football Writers All-Rookie Team.

The Chicago Bears had just five selections in the 2019 NFL Draft, and they didn’t pick until the third round, when they traded up 13 spots to take running back David Montgomery.

Given Montgomery was the only rookie that played meaningful snaps — on an abysmal offense — it’s not really a surprise that the Bears had no rookies selected to the 2019 Pro Football Writers All-Rookie Team.

Montgomery would’ve been the only viable candidate to make the All-Rookie Team. He had 242 rushes for 889 yards and six touchdowns. In the passing game, Montgomery added 25 receptions for 185 yards and a score.

Not exactly stellar stats for the highly-touted rookie, although there was nothing impressive about Chicago’s offense last season aside from receiver Allen Robinson.

The Raiders’ Josh Jacobs and Eagles’ Miles Sanders represented the running backs on the list.

Simply put, the Bears’ 2019 draft class was a disappointing one. Aside from Montgomery, the rookies didn’t make an impression. Fourth-round receiver Riley Ridley barely saw the field, cornerback Duke Shelley played primarily on special teams, running back Kerrith Whyte Jr. found success with the Steelers and cornerback Stephen Denmark spent his rookie season on the practice squad.

2 Broncos named to PFWA’s All-Rookie Team

Broncos guard Dalton Risner and tight end Noah Fant made PFWA’s 2019 All-Rookie Team.

Denver Broncos offensive lineman Dalton Risner and tight end Noah Fant both made the Pro Football Writers of America’s 2019 All-Rookie Team, it was announced Tuesday. Risner allowed 2.5 sacks in 16 starts this season. Risner was also named to Pro Football Focus’ All-Rookie Team.

Fant led all rookie tight ends in receptions (40), yards (562) and yards per catch (14) this season. Fant was selected by the Broncos in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft. Risner was selected by Denver in the second round.

No team in the league has more PFWA All-Rookie selections over the last two years than Denver (four). Last season, running back Phillip Lindsay and outside linebacker Bradley Chubb made PFWA’s All-Rookie Team. Lindsay was voted to the Pro Bowl and Chubb was a Pro Bowl alternate in 2018.

Broncos safety Justin Simmons did not make the PFWA’s All-NFL Team or All-AFC Team but he did take home second-team All-Pro honors from the Associated Press. Simmons is set to become a free agent in March and Denver is expected to make him a high priority this offseason.
