On3 recognizes Kevin Steele as one of the best Power 5 coordinators in Week 4

Kevin Steele recognized as one of the best coordinators in the country in Week 4

After an underwhelming performance against the Texas Longhorns where the Alabama defense surrendered 34 points and 454 yards, defensive coordinator Kevin Steele has turned the ship around, and fast. Over the course of the next two games, against USF and Ole Miss, the Tide defense has only given up 13 total points and has shown they are still one of the most talented units in football.

Serious questions were being asked of Steele after the Texas loss, but he has done an outstanding job of making the adjustments he has needed to since then. With Ole Miss coming to town and Alabama’s former DC Pete Golding in the same role with the Rebels, it was a big moment in the season for both sides. Going into the game the Rebels offense was averaging nearly 53 PPG and looked like one of the best in the country.

Steele and the Alabama defense shut them down to only 10 points, further proving that Nick Saban did the right thing by transitioning from Golding to Steele. The Alabama offense wasn’t perfect by any means, but they finally started to get the gears turning against Golding which was certainly a moral victory.

For his outstanding performance on Saturday, On3’s Matt Zenitz listed Steele as one of the best Power 5 coordinators of the week. Zenitz said, “During Alabama’s 24-10 win over No. 15 Ole Miss, Steele held Lane Kiffin to the lowest regular season point of his four seasons as the Rebels’ head coach. Ole Miss had just three points in the final three quarters. The Crimson Tide tallied 10 tackles for loss and five sacks.”

Former Alabama DC Pete Golding compares Lane Kiffin to Nick Saban

Pete Golding’s comments comparing and contrasting Nick Saban to Lane Kiffin

After spending the last five years with the Alabama Crimson Tide, former defensive coordinator Pete Golding will be taking on a new challenge in 2023. This offseason, Golding decided to join another former Alabama coordinator, Lane Kiffin, at Ole Miss, where he will again be responsible for calling the shots defensively.

Golding was a key recruiter for the Tide and a massive part of the 2020 national championship team, but things seemed to tail off in his final two seasons in Tuscaloosa. Golding is still one of the best defensive coordinators in the game, but Saban and the staff at Alabama felt like it was time for a fresh start for both parties. This year, the Crimson Tide defense will be led by Kevin Steele, who was the DC of the Saban era.

Ole Miss football had its first scrimmage of the offseason recently. During the media availability, Golding was asked about some of the distinctions between his former head coach Nick Saban and new boss, Lane Kiffin.

Golding was highly complimentary of both, but especially of Kiffin by adding that while they do a lot of things similar to Alabama.

“I think Coach Kiffin does a really good job of putting his own personality on the program while still not getting away from the culture and foundation and discipline and toughness and all those things you need for a winning program… He and I both learned a lot from there (Alabama).”

Ole Miss will travel to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 23 in Golding’s first crack at his former team. The Tide currently carries a seven-game winning streak over the Rebels.

Ranking Alabama’s five toughest games in 2023

Ranking the five toughest games Alabama football will face in 2023

Alabama football is coming off of one of its most disappointing seasons in the past decade after suffering heartbreaking losses to LSU and Tennessee that resulted in missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

The Tide must also replace two generational players in Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. as well as both their offensive and defensive coordinators in 2023. So there are a lot of question marks surrounding the entire entering this season.

However, as long as Nick Saban is at the helm, the Crimson Tide will be SEC frontrunners and national title contenders. Saban brought in former Notre Dame OC, Tommy Rees, to run the offense and Miami Hurricanes DC, Kevin Steele, to patch up the defense. Both were great hires and seem to be improvements from last season based on what they showed in Saturday’s A-Day.

The Tide still has to figure out who will be the quarterback moving into the season and we need to see improvements from the receiving room, but I am really optimistic about the guys Alabama has in-house. Saban has continuously preached the work ethic and toughness of the guys on the current roster and it’s important they play with that Bama edge again this fall.

The Tide will face a difficult schedule in 2023 as they host the Texas Longhorns out of conference combined with a loaded SEC schedule. Can the Tide run the table in 2023? RollTideWire ranks the five toughest games the Tide face this fall.

TOP TWEETS: Why is Jeremy Pruitt trending on Twitter?

Jeremy Pruitt is trending on Twitter as rumors and speculation swirl regarding the open Alabama DC job

Former Alabama football defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt has had his name in the headlines for a few days. Ever since Pete Golding announced his departure from the Crimson Tide program for the Ole Miss defensive coordinator job, Pruitt has been one of the most talked-about potential candidates.

With Nick Saban and the Alabama program, not much information leaks from behind closed doors. Though many may speculate, no one can be certain who the candidates are to replace Golding at DC. That doesn’t stop the rumors from swirling.

Pruitt’s name is trending on Twitter as fans and analysts discuss the possibility of him being cleared by the SEC and returning to Alabama in some capacity.

10 potential candidates to replace Alabama DC Pete Golding

Could any of these 10 names be Alabama’s defensive coordinator next season?

Alabama football recently lost their defensive coordinator Pete Golding to SEC rival Ole Miss. Now, the search has begun to see who will replace the former play-caller over the past five seasons in Tuscaloosa.

Golding may not have been a fan-favorite, but he did assemble and lead some of the top recruiting classes that Alabama managed to land in recent years. He was an intricate part of the Tide’s recruiting efforts in states like Louisiana and Texas.

The search for a new defensive coordinator is likely already underway and kept under wraps.

Here are 10 potential candidates to replace Golding for Alabama’s next defensive coordinator position.

WATCH: Pete Golding lands in Oxford as Ole Miss DC

Pete Golding has touched down in Oxford to begin serving as the Ole Miss defensive coordinator.

Former Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding has made the move from Tuscaloosa to Oxford, Mississippi. The four-year Crimson Tide defensive coordinator left the Nick Saban-led program for the same position one state over at Ole Miss under Lane Kiffin.

The news was shocking to many but was a welcomed change by a lot of fans.

As the 2023 college football offseason gets underway, the Crimson Tide will begin the search for a new defensive play caller for the upcoming season.

Ole Miss recently posted a video to Twitter showcasing Golding getting off of the private jets wearing all Ole Miss gear.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football as the offseason continues.

LOOK: Alabama fans react to DC Pete Golding leaving for Ole Miss

Alabama fans have had some interesting reactions to the news of Pete Golding moving

Former Alabama football defensive coordinator Pete Golding was with the Crimson Tide in that position since 2018. He fielded some quality defenses, but he never seemingly won over the fans.

After four seasons working for Nick Saban, Golding made a move this week. He is staying in the SEC West and will serve as defensive coordinator at Mississippi under Lane Kiffin.

The news shocked some but was expected by others. The reason for the move is not clear, though some believe it was a mutual parting of ways.

Here’s what fans are saying about the news.

Alabama’s defensive coordinator left for Ole Miss, and Tide fans celebrated like they won a championship

Alabama fans didn’t seem to take this one too hard.

Nick Saban’s staff is going to see a major shakeup heading into 2023 after a disappointing finish (by Alabama standards) this fall.

On Friday, defensive coordinator Pete Golding left to take the same role on Lane Kiffin’s staff at Ole Miss to replace Chris Partridge. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Chris Low.

Despite fielding a defense that ranked in the top 15 in yards allowed and top 10 in points allowed this fall, Golding decreased in popularity this season after Alabama allowed 52 points and 32 points in its losses to Tennessee and LSU, respectively.

Normally, news of a coach leaving for the same position at a division rival would be a cause for frustration, but among Crimson Tide fans on Friday, it seemed to be more of a cause for celebration, instead.

In fairness, this may be a move that works out for both sides, and there seems to be at least a segment of Ole Miss fans that are thrilled by the move.

Still, it’s not every day you see fans cheer the departure of a national title-winning DC. Here were the best reactions to Golding’s move.

Eli Ricks to make NFL draft announcement on Tuesday afternoon

Eli Ricks will make decision on Crimson Tide future today!

IO a day that saw the Alabama Crimson Tide lose four underclassmen to the NFL draft, [autotag]Eli Ricks[/autotag] is yet to make his decision.

As anticipated, Bryce Young, Will Anderson, Jahmyr Gibbs and Brian Branch will all forego their senior years for the NFL draft as they are all receiving projected round-one grades.

The fifth junior who may go is the former LSU Tigers transfer Eli Ricks, a fringe round one to two pick. Ricks came on late in the season but was outstanding for Pete Golding as the season closed.

By returning for his senior year Ricks could certainly play himself into an early first-round selection, however, it makes sense to enter the draft as well. It is always hard to pass up on life-changing money.

On Monday, Ricks announced via social media that he will be announcing his decision to enter the draft or not at 1:00 p.m. CST on Tuesday. Regardless of what he does, we will support him.

‘I’m still under contract, so absolutely’ says Pete Golding on plans to return to Alabama

Pete Golding fully expects to be back as Alabama’s DC for the 2023 season.

Alabama defensive coordinator [autotag]Pete Golding[/autotag] has been under the fan’s microscope ever since he took over the playcalling four seasons ago.

Much like their feelings for offensive coordinator [autotag]Bill O’Brien[/autotag], Alabama fans are ready to move on from the Golding experiment.

While I understand the frustration of the Alabama faithful, it is important to note that under Golding, and during a time when Alabama was revolutionizing its offensive philosophy, the Crimson Tide has continued to be one of the best defenses in the entire country.

In fact, since 2019 Alabama ranks sixth in the nation in points per game allowed at 19. Just three points behind the best average of 16 from the Georiga Bulldogs.

While those numbers do not tell the whole story, it is at the very least part of the story.

On Thursday, just two days before the Crimson Tide will face Kansas State in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Golding would participate in a press conference where he was directly asked about his future with [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and Alabama.

Golding gave a quick and definitive response.

“I’m still under contract, so absolutely.”

Much like O’Brien, Golding can take some of the bad taste out of the fans mouths with a strong showing on Saturday against the Big 12 champs.
