Pepper Johnson named head coach at Florida’s IMG Academy

Former OSU linebacker Pepper Johnson is your new head coach at IMG Academy in Florida.

One of the best high school programs in the country has a new head coach and he’s a former All-American linebacker from Ohio State.

Thomas “Pepper” Johnson served as IMG’s defensive coordinator last season, but has now been promoted to head coach with the departure of Ascenders’ head coach Bobby Acosta, who accepted the head coaching position at Del Valle, Texas.

Johnson is 56-years old and had a fantastic four-year career at Ohio State from 1982-1985, tallying 379 tackles and five sacks. He was named an All-American his senior season before being selected by the New York Giants in the second round of the 1986 NFL draft.

He also excelled at the highest level as a two-time Pro-Bowler. During his career in the NFL, Johnson totaled 983 tackles, 25.5 sacks, and 14 interceptions in his 12-year professional career that also included stops in Cleveland, Detroit, and the New York Jets.

Johnson has been in the coaching ranks ever since, and now he’ll get a chance to steer the ship in Bradenton, Florida for IMG where he’ll get a chance to develop and coach some of the best prep talent in the country.

Ex-Jets coach fired from XFL job after just one game

Former Jets defensive line coach Pepper Johnson was fired by the XFL’s Wildcats after just one game.

A former Jets coach has been shown the door in the XFL.

According to Pick Wise’s Alex Alarcon, the Los Angeles Wildcats have fired Pepper Johnson, their defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, after just one game. The Wildcats have yet to name his replacement.

The Wildcats allowed 37 points, 315 total net yards and 5.6 yards per play in their 37-17 loss to the Houston Roughnecks in Week 1 of the XFL season.

Johnson spent time with the Jets as a player and a coach before he joined the rebooted XFL. He was a linebacker for the Jets for two seasons in 1997 and 1998. He then served as the Jets defensive line coach in 2015 and 2016 when Todd Bowles was New York’s head coach.

The 55-year-old Johnson was a player in the NFL for 13 seasons with four different teams, including the Giants, Browns, Lions and Jets. He was a two-time Super Bowl champ with Big Blue and made the Pro Bowl twice during his career.

After retiring from the league, Johnson got into coaching with the Patriots. He was with New England from 2000-2013, mainly working with the defensive line and linebackers. He then joined the Bills in 2014 as their defensive line coach before going to the Jets in 2015. Johnson was out of coaching for three years until the Memphis Express of the now-defunct AAF hired him as their defensive line coach in December 2018. That league folded midway through its inaugural season in 2019.

Johnson was hired by the Wildcats in June.

XFL LA Wildcats fire defensive coordinator Pepper Johnson after first game

LA Wildcats coach Winston Moss fired DC Pepper Johnson after his XFL team lost its first game.

Pepper Johnson can always tell his former boss and mentor Bill Belichick that his XFL coaching career lasted one more game than the eight-time Super Bowl winner’s time as head coach of the New York Jets.

The defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Wildcats was fired Monday, two days after the team made its XFL debut in a 37-17 loss to the Houston Roughnecks.

Johnson played linebacker on Giants teams that had Belichick as its DC for Super Bowl XXI and XXV. He also earned rings as an assistant coach under Belichick on Patriots teams that won Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX.

The Wildcats also released LB Anthony Johnson

Of course, there was reaction to the news:

XFL’s Wildcats fire ex-Giant Pepper Johnson after just one game

The XFL’s Los Angeles Wildcats have fired former New York Giant Pepper Johnson after just one game.

Pepper Johnson’s XFL career as a top assistant coach may have already come to an end.

After the team’s initial game this past weekend, the Los Angeles Wildcats have decided to part ways with Johnson just one game into the season.

Johnson’s termination as the team’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach comes after a 37-17 defeat at the hands of the Houston Roughnecks in Week 1.

This wasn’t the first time Johnson had an abrupt ending to a coaching tenure, as he was coaching the Memphis Express in the Alliance for American Football before the league shut down suddenly last year.

Johnson spent 15 years in the NFL as an assistant coach, 13 of those years working for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots prior to joining the Buffalo Bills and then spending two seasons with the New York Jets.

Johnson began his NFL career as a draft pick of the New York Giants back in 1986 and spent seven seasons there, winning two Super Bowls with the team before playing elsewhere.

It’s unclear if Johnson will pursue other coaching gigs in the XFL or if he will try to look for work again in the NFL.
