Former Nittany Lion Tanisha Wright named WNBA Coach of the Year

The WNBA’s head coach of the year, Tanisha Wright, makes Penn State family proud.

The Atlanta Dream were at the bottom of the WNBA but they have started to crawl out of the basement of the league as it gains momentum. The best part? They are doing so with the help of their head coach and Penn State women’s basketball alum Tanisha Wright.

Wright played at Penn State from 2001 to 2005 and now she has made WNBA history in his first year coaching. She was voted the WNBA coach of the year and becomes the first former WNBA player to win the award in the process.

Wright led Atlanta to a fifth-place finish in her first season with the team. The Dream’s 14-22 record was nearly double their win total from the year before when they won just 8 games. Wright also coached Rhyne Howard who was the leagues first overall pick this past season. Under Wright’s coaching she would play well enough to earn an All-Star selection as a rookie.

As for her career at Penn State, Wright as mentioned played at the school from 2001-2005. She earned three Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year awards and helped drive the team to the NCAA Tournament all four years she was on the team. Wright even was able to lead the Lady Lions to an Elite Eight appearance in 2004.

Tanisha Wright would enter the 2005 WNBA draft and be selected 12th overall by the Seattle Storm. She went on to play ten seasons with the Storm, with stops in New York and Minnesota with the Liberty and Lynx along the way.

Ironically despite the rise, the Dream will hold the third overall pick in the draft. She will ne absorbing more talent in the coming months so she could hopefully lead the Dream to more wins and success in the coming years.

Former Penn State women’s basketball coach lands new Big Ten gig

Former Penn State women’s basketball coach hired by Big Ten school to lead program

Former Penn State women’s basketball head coach Coquese Washington is heading back to the Big Ten as a head coach. Rutgers officially announced on Monday it has hired the former Penn State head coach to serve as the program’s new head coach of the women’s basketball program.

Washington was the successor of former Penn State head coach Rene Portland following Portland’s controversial resignation amid controversy for her alleged discrimination of lesbian players in 2007. Washington took on the Penn State head coaching job as her first professional head coaching opportunity, and she held the job for 12 seasons when Penn State chose to not bring her back after the 2019 season. Prior to coming to Penn State, Washington was an assistant coach for her alma mater, Notre Dame. After moving on from Penn State, Washington spent one season as an assistant head coach for Oklahoma and returned to Notre Dame in 2020 for two more seasons back in South Bend as an assistant.

Washington earned multiple Big Ten coach of the year honors during her time at Penn State (2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14) and took the Lady Lions to four NCAA women’s basketball tournaments and three trips to the women’s NIT. Penn State advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2012 and 2014 and combined for a record of 76-20 during that three-year run.

At Rutgers, Washington will replace the legendary Vivian Stringer, a 2009 inductee to the Basketball Hall of Fame who has coached teams to four Final Four appearances (one with Iowa and three more with Rutgers), three Big East titles (Rutgers), and 10 regular season or conference tournament Big Ten championships (between Iowa and Rutgers) during the regular season.

Lady Lions go one-and-done in women’s Big Ten Basketball Tournament

Penn State closed out its 2021-22 season with a blowout loss to Rutgers in the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament.

Penn State’s time in the women’s Big Ten basketball tournament ended just as soon as it started. Penn State came up short in a first-round matchup against Rutgers on Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis, losing 75-50. Penn State’s season concludes with a record of 11-18 overall, and 5-13 in the Big Ten.

Penn State trailed by six points at halftime but Rutgers pulled ahead by a wide margin in the third quarter by outscoring Penn State 23-11. Rutgers put the game well out of reach with a big 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter, by which time the damage had been done.

Leilani Kapinus recorded a double-double in the losing effort and Makenna Marisa added 15 points to finish off her impressive season.

Penn State’s season may have ended with a thud against Rutgers, but it does so with an improved win total from the previous season. And for the second straight season, Penn State improved its win total under head coach Carolyn Kieger. Penn State won just seven games in Kieger’s first season since being hired away from Marquette. Each of the past two seasons has tacked on two more wins to the season record.

Those small steps forward may be difficult to respect given the current state of the program overall. Losing by 25 points to the 13-seed in the Big Ten tournament is truly a tough pill to swallow, but we will see what comes next for the program in 2022-23. Kieger’s track record suggests Penn State could be due for a major step forward soon. Kieger won 9 and 12 games in her first two seasons as head coach at Marquette before winning at least 24 games in each of the following three seasons, with back-to-back second-round appearances in the NCAA tournament.
