Illinois vs Penn State Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

It’s all about the Nittany Lion defense.

The offense isn’t going to do much of anything, but the defense went bye-bye n a blowout loss to Nebraska in a 93-70 loss. Before that, the defense was good tight games, and now it has to grind this down against the Illini.

Illinois has been off. It’s partly because it’s been on the road for three of the last four games, and it’s partly because the defense has been awful, allowing teams to hit close to 50% from the field over the last seven games.

Penn State doesn’t have to go crazy, but if it can just get to 45%, it’s in this.

However …

Why Illinois Will Win

There’s still a shot at taking a piece of the Big Ten regular season title.

Wisconsin has locked up at least part of it, and can have it outright with a win over Nebraska, but a Badger loss and Illinois wins over Penn State and Iowa would be enough to get a t-shirt.

That doesn’t really matter – no one ever remembers who wins a regular season college basketball title – but it’s enough of a motivation to come up with a strong performance at home.

Amazing from three over the last few games – hitting 22-of-42 in the last two outings with the offense rocking and rolling – just getting to 70 points probably ends this because …

What’s Going To Happen

Penn State hasn’t scored more than 70 points since the end of January and only three times since Thanksgiving.

The defense is playing well enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but the Nittany Lions aren’t going for force turnovers.

Illinois will go on an early second half run to end any drama.

Michigan State vs Penn State Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

Penn State isn’t playing well.

It’s on a run of six losses in the last seven games, the defense is struggling, and even with the shooting is solid – like it was against Minnesota a few days ago – it’s not enough to overcome the lack of consistency defensively.

Everything is a fight. It’s the lowest scoring team in the Big Ten, there’s nothing happening on the free throw line, and the defense isn’t making things better with steals and big plays.

Michigan State should be just fine as long as it keeps the Nittany Lions from getting inside and with the team’s three-point D taking over, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Penn State Will Win

Penn State hasn’t been that bad.

It’s losing, but it gave Michigan a hard time, pushed Wisconsin in Madison, and slipped by in a win over Iowa.

No, it’s not going to be able to hang with Michigan State if this gets into a shooting contest, but the defense and style should be strong enough to keep this close and in range.

Michigan State has been a tad flaky – it couldn’t score against Rutgers on the road and it’s having a hard time from three lately – but it all comes down to Penn State’s shooting.

If it can hit in the mid-40s and not get destroyed on the boards, it has a chance. However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

For all of Michigan State’s inconsistencies, it hasn’t been all that bad at keeping teams from shooting the lights out.

Only four teams have been able to shoot better than 46% against the Spartans, and all four won.

Penn State isn’t a rock at home, and Michigan State isn’t all that bad on the road, but this will be more of a low scoring fight than the Spartans might like.

Wisconsin vs Penn State Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

The shocker of the Wisconsin loss to Illinois wasn’t that it lost. It’s that it was about to outrebound the Illini.

This is not normal a dominant Badger team on the boards, but it’s had its moments. Penn State is coming off a 52-rebound game in the double overtime win over Iowa, it’s been terrific on the offensive glass over the last few games, and it needs to step it all up to make up for any shooting issues – more on that in a moment.

Wisconsin lost to the Illini because it couldn’t hit a thing from three and Illinois was lights out from the field. Penn State has generate makable shots inside, it needs to take advantage of every way to score points – like on the free throw line, and …

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Penn State hasn’t been great lately from the field.

It shot okay against Iowa, but the team wasn’t able to hit 40% in any of the three previous games, and it struggles lately to get to 45%.

Wisconsin’s defense isn’t anything special – this isn’t the D you’re used to – it manages to keep teams to around 70 or under. The Badgers have only allowed double-digit threes once – a win over Texas A&M – and Penn State hasn’t hit ten or more from the outside since January 2nd.

Wisconsin wins by making just about everything from the free throw line, not turning the ball over, and making the most of its possessions as the game goes on.

Penn State isn’t good at coming up with easy points, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Wisconsin’s defense really is just that bad at keeping teams from hitting their shots.

You have to work to not make 40% of your shots against this defense, but Penn State has a hard time scoring. It doesn’t play any sort of an up-tempo style, it only scored more than 67 points six times, and it’s 1-7 when it doesn’t come up with at least 35 rebounds.

Only six teams have come up with 35 or more rebounds against Wisconsin.

Ohio State basketball vs. Penn State: How to watch and listen to the game Sunday

Ohio State takes on Penn State in State College to kick off the Big Ten season. Here’s how to find the game.

The Ohio State men’s basketball team shocked the world on Tuesday night upending newly No. 1 ranked Duke as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Buckeyes showed some resiliency after trailing by 13 at the half but kept chipping away to take the lead in the final minutes of the game to rain on the Coach K retirement parade.

Chris Holtmann’s club will now open up Big Ten play as the Bucks travel to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions. It will be a homecoming of sorts for Jamari Wheeler who transferred from PSU to Ohio State.

The Buckeyes will look to build off the exciting win over the No. 1 Blue Devils and get the Big Ten season started with a conference win. Big Ten road games are never easy… even in Happy Valley.

Penn State’s Micah Shrewsberry to toss first pitch at Pirates-Phillies game

Micah Shrewsberry may want to get some advice from James Franklin on throwing out a first pitch

Penn State men’s basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry is ushering in a brand new era of Penn State basketball this year. But before he coaches his first game for the Nittany Lions, he’ll be asked to toss out a ceremonial first pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pirates have invited Shrewsberry to throw out the first pitch prior to their home game against the in-state rival Philadelphia Phillies on July 31. The Pirates will have a THON night at the ballpark to help raise funds for Penn State’s largest student-run fundraiser. Shrewsberry will also do a meet and greet with fans attending the game.

Penn State football head coach James Franklin may be able to lend Shrewsberry some advice on throwing out a first pitch. Franklin threw out the first pitch at a New York Yankees game in 2015, the summer after Franklin coached Penn State to a victory in the Pinstripe Bowl against Boston College.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im4F-_Oi3ZU

As if that was not enough, later that same summer, Franklin tossed out the first pitch before a Phillies game in Philadelphia.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq9cUfb_ifo

Speaking of Franklin, he is awaiting a decision by incoming wide receiver Lonnie White Jr., who was drafted by the Pirates in the recent MLB draft. White Jr. must decide whether to follow through on his commitment to play football for James Franklin or begin his path to the big leagues by joining the Pirates farm system as soon as possible.
