3 Takeaways from Michigan State’s win at Penn State

Michigan State went on the road and got a huge victory over Penn State, taking down the Nittany Lions, 80-72.

While a convincing performance, you can tell Tom Izzo wasn’t entirely satisfied, but all in all, a win is a win and the Spartans made it relatively stress free for Spartan Nation.

The win also posed as a huge Q2 victory for MSU, further bolstering their NCAA Tournament resume, something that needs to continue to improve for the Spartans to feel good on selection Sunday.

Michigan State basketball blitzes Penn State for first Big Ten victory

MSU dominates Penn State by 31 points to earn first Big Ten victory:

Michigan State hosted Penn State on Thursday evening, looking to gain their first Big Ten victory of the 2023-24 season, and they did exactly that. Behind an outstanding team effort, the Spartans blitzed the Nittany Lions, defeating PSU, 92-61.

The Spartans never trailed in the game, and after winning the opening tip and taking a 2-0 lead on the first possession, the Spartans led the entire way.

A season high 51 points were scored in the first half for MSU, who had all things clicking on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court.

Malik Hall (24 points) led the way for Michigan State, while Tyson Walker (22 points) also had a huge game. Mady Sissoko had 12 rebounds in a solid effort, while AJ Hoggard, Jaden Akins and Tre Holloman all had 10 points a piece.

Michigan State will look for their sixth straight win on Sunday when they travel to Evanston for a game against Northwestern.

Michigan State football gets throttled in Ford Field by Penn State

Michigan State throttled inside of Ford Field by Penn State

Michigan State and Penn State locked up in a matchup for the Land Grant Trophy on Friday night inside of Detroit’s Ford Field. The Spartans, who came into the game at 4-7, had upset on their mind – facing the 9-2 Nittany Lions.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, it went far from it, with Penn State dominating the Spartans, 42-0.

Michigan State’s defense did their best to keep its team in the game, but it was the offense, in a story known far too well by fans, letting down the team once again. The game was 13-0 at halftime, and MSU had turned the ball over once to go along with two three-and-outs.

Ultimately, the offense started the second half with four possessions going for -22 yards. It was too much for a worn down defense to overcome, which saw Penn State start to score when they wanted.

Michigan State finished the game with 53 yards of total offense and allowed six sacks.

This marks the end of the 2023 season for Michigan State, that saw their head coach Mel Tucker get fired and ultimately fell short of expectations with a 4-8 record.

Michigan State goes on the road, downs Penn State, 67-58

Michigan State went on the road to defeat Penn State on Wednesday night:

Following a two game losing streak to Notre Dame and Northwestern, the Spartans went on the road to knock off Penn State to get the first Big Ten win of the 2022-23 season, righting the ship.

AJ Hoggard had a career night scoring, leading his team to a gritty road victory.

MSU opened the game in the worst way possible, giving up a 16-6 run in the first seven minutes into the game.

Thankfully, the Spartans were able to steady the ship, and clawed their way back into the game behind 3 pointers from Jaden Akins and Pierre Brooks.

The two teams would go into the half tied at 35.

The second half featured Michigan State’s defense taking a big step forward. After giving up 7 3-pointers in the first half, MSU held PSU to only 1 in the second half.

Both teams would trade buckets, and stops, keeping the game within one possession until the 6:32 mark when Tyson Walker canned a 3-point bucket, giving the Spartans a 4 point lead.

The Spartans would close out the game holding Penn State to just one field goal over the last 5:30 in the contest.

Welcomed to the fanbase, MSU did a good job with their press break and making free throws, closing out the game with a 9-point win.

AJ Hoggard led the way with a career high 23 points while adding 6 rebounds. Joey Hauser contributed with a double-double consisting of 12 points and 15 rebounds. Tyson Walker was also in double figures with 14 points.

MSU is back in action on Saturday at 4:30 EST against Brown at the Breslin Center.
