Jets sign WR Josh Malone to active roster, place CB Arthur Maulet on IR

The Jets have signed Josh Malone to the active roster and placed Arthur Maulet on injured reserve.

After being called up from the practice squad twice, the Jets officially signed Josh Malone to the active roster.

New York announced on Tuesday that it has signed Malone to the 53-man roster and placed CB Arthur Maulet on injured reserve. In addition, the Jets released Paul Worrilow from their practice squad.

Under the new practice squad rules, the Jets were allowed to bring Malone up to the gameday roster twice and then send him back down to the practice squad without him being subject to waivers. Since Malone has played two games though, he was subject to waivers.

The Jets now have three healthy wide receivers on the active roster. Along with Malone, the Jets have Chris Hogan and Braxton Berrios. Jamison Crowder is still a question mark for this week with a hamstring injury, while Breshad Perriman is week-to-week with an ankle injury.

As for Maulet, he has to miss at least the next three games under the new injured reserve rules. So the Jets are down to four healthy cornerbacks with Quincy Wilson having a concussion.

The Jets could promote a cornerback from the practice squad to take Maulet’s spot. Javelin Guidry, Lamar Jackson and Zane Lewis are the three cornerbacks on the Jets’ practice squad.

Jets add LB Paul Worrilow to practice squad

The Jets announced that they would be signing free agent linebacker Paul Worrilow to their practice squad following his visit Tuesday.

The Jets have signed free agent linebacker Paul Worrilow to the team’s practice squad.

New York announced the move just a day after Worrilow came in for an official visit. Worrilow’s addition comes after New York placed Blake Cashman (groin) on injured reserve. The Jets are thin at inside linebacker with Patrick Onwuasor (knee) already on IR and Avery Williamson (hamstring) having been inactive for Week 1.

Right now, Neville Hewitt and Harvey Langi are the only two healthy inside linebackers on New York’s active roster.

Worrilow joins LB Alec Ogletree on the practice squad, who Gang Green elected to protect as part of the league’s new practice squad rules. These revised rules allow teams to protect up to four players by Tuesday of each week from being signed by another team.

Worrilow originally signed with the Jets last November, playing in four games without recording a tackle.

Worrilow started his NFL career in Atlanta, signing with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent out of Delaware. He then played one season in Detroit before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018. Worrilow tore his ACL on the first day of OTAs and missed the entire season. He bounced between the Eagles and Ravens in 2019 before announcing his retirement.

Joe Douglas was able to coax Worrilow out of retirement last season with the Jets in dire need of inside linebacker depth. The Jets general manager has yet again brought back Worrilow with his unit in shambles.

In 72 career games, Worrilow has recorded 415 total tackles, four sacks, 11 passes defended and two interceptions.

Jets work out OLB Paul Worrilow, Bilal Powell works out for Chargers

The Jets hosted Paul Worrilow for a workout on Tuesday, while former running back Bilal Powell worked out for the Chargers.

On Tuesday, the Jets worked out one familiar face, while another worked out with one of New York’s AFC foes.

Veteran linebacker Paul Worrilow visited with New York as it looks to shore up its depth at the position with Blake Cashman, Patrick Onwuasor and Avery Williamson all injured. The 30-year-old signed with the Jets last November after crossing paths with Joe Douglas in Philadelphia, appearing in four games with New York at the end of the season without recording a single tackle.

Worrilow entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Delaware with the Falcons in 2013 and remained with Atlanta until 2016 before signing with the Lions in 2017. Worrilow spent 2018 with the Eagles, but did not play in a game after tearing his ACL on the first day of OTAs before suiting up for the Ravens and Jets last year.

In seven seasons, Worrilow has registered 391 tackles and four sacks. He recorded over 100 tackles in consecutive years with the Falcons in 2013 and 2014.

While Worrilow spent his day in Florham Park, former Jets running back Bilal Powell worked out for the Chargers. He had previously stated he was open to a reunion with New York, but with Kalen Ballage signing on to fill in for Le’Veon Bell, one seems unlikely at this point in time.

Powell posted 229 rushing yards and seven receptions for 33 yards playing in a complementary role behind Le’Veon Bell in 2019. The Jets elected not to bring the veteran back this offseason and went in a different direction, drafting La’Mical Perine and signing Frank Gore.

New York drafted Powell out of Louisville in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. In nine seasons with New York, he has recorded 3,675 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns to go along with 211 receptions for 1,600 yards and five touchdowns. Powell’s best season came in 2015, rushing for 772 yards and five scores.

Jets vs. Dolphins inactives: Jamal Adams, Le’Veon Bell out as expected

The Jets will be without both Jamal Adams and Le’Veon Bell for the first time all season.

Jamal Adams and Le’Veon Bell will miss their first game of the 2019 season Sunday when the Jets host the Dolphins.

Adams suffered an ankle sprain last week in Cincinnati and is considered week-to-week, while Bell has an illness. For Adams, this is his first game that he’s ever missed in the NFL. Darryl Roberts will likely slide into his position at safety.

The Jets will be without a couple of other key members in their secondary. Brian Poole (concussion) and Arthur Maulet (calf) are both out for Sunday’s game. Expect Nate Hairston to take Poole’s spot in the slot and Maurice Canady should get the start on the outside for Maulet.

Chuma Edoga will sit out for the second straight game with an ankle injury. Paul Worrilow (quad) and Mathias Farley (rib/ankle) are also out as well.

As for the Dolphins, they’ll have all their starters healthy this week. They will be without seven backups with four coming on defense and three on offense.
