Breaking: Paul Mulcahy commits out of the transfer portal to the Washington Huskies

Paul Mulcahy is officially leaving Rutgers and joining Washington.

Paul Mulcahy, who spent the last four years at Rutgers basketball, committed to the Washington Huskies on Tuesday. Mulcahy had entered the transfer portal last month.

The starting guard for Rutgers the past three seasons, Mulcahy made 121 appearances and 91 starts during his four seasons at Rutgers. He finished his career averaging 6.8 points and 3. assists per game.

All of his starts came in his final three seasons with the Scarlet Knights.

Last year while playing with an injured shoulder, Mulcahy averaged 8.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

This past season, Washington went 16-16 (8-12 Pac 12). They had some narrow losses to ranked teams including 70-67 at No. 5 Arizona in early January and then a nine-point loss at No. 9 UCLA in early February.

Mulcahy brings instant leadership to a team that is looking to take the next step this season and potentially play in the postseason. His court presence and leadership will be welcome to the Huskies locker room.

In addition, his mid-range jump shot and ability to post up will help Washington on the offensive end.

After an offseason full of change, Rutgers men’s basketball preparing for 2023-2024 campaign

What are the biggest stories of the Rutgers basketball upcoming season?

For Rutgers basketball, a lot has changed over the last few months. Key pieces such as Cam Spencer and Paul Mulcahy entered the transfer portal, and Caleb McConnell said goodbye to Piscataway. While they all played an important role, the Scarlet Knights are shifting their focus to the 2023-2024 campaign.

The roster will feature many new faces, including Jamicheal Davis, Derek Simpson, and Gavin Griffiths. The trio should add a boost offensively which will be vital in the Big Ten. For head coach Steve Pikiell it will be an important season after Rutgers missed the NCAA Tournament last year.

Pikiell will have talented upperclassmen to lean on in Clifford Omoruyi and Aundre Hyatt, who took his game to another level during the 2022-2023 campaign. That duo should make life harder for opponents when they take on Rutgers.

While the season is still months away, fans in Piscataway could have a fun winter in store. This team has the chance talent to make things interesting and has been shaped by six moves in particular.

Rutgers basketball guard Paul Mulcahy: ‘I will be entering the transfer portal’

Paul Mulcahy will not return to Rutgers basketball for his final season of college basketball.

After four years at Rutgers basketball, including serving as team captain, Paul Mulcahy will be entering the transfer portal.

He was a commit in the 2019 recruiting class as a three-star guard who was a top 150 player nationally. He played his New Jersey high school basketball at Gill St. Bernard School.

Last season at Rutgers, Mulcahy averaged 8.3 points per game while shooting a career-low 41.6 percent. He played much of last season with an injured shoulder. He was a team captain and a strong leader in the locker room.

Mulcahy earned a reputation at Rutgers for making numerous big shots for the program during his four seasons with the Scarlet Knights.

It was thought that Mulcahy might return for a final season at Rutgers given his recent withdrawal from the NBA draft process. Now it appears that he will be heading elsewhere for his final year of college eligibility.

The emergence of Derek Simpson late last season likely played a part in Mulcahy’s decision to leave Rutgers. Simpson, a true freshman, had some big games for Rutgers late in the season and in the Big Ten Tournament.

Rutgers also landed Noah Fernandes this offseason in the transfer portal. The UMass guard projects as a starter for the Scarlet Knights, likely cutting into Mulcahy’s role and impact this upcoming season.

Paul Mulcahy has pulled out of the NBA Draft

There was good news on the Paul Mulcahy front this week.

As the start of the college basketball season inches closer, reinforcements could be on the way for Rutgers basketball. News broke on Thursday that Mulcahy will not be entering the NBA draft. According to  Brian Fonseca (for New Jersey Advanced Media), Mulcahy’s name was on the list released by the NBA on Thursday of prospects who pulled their names out of the draft’s early entrant pool.

Although Mulcahy participated in multiple draft workouts over the last few weeks, he was not invited to the NBA Draft Combine or the G-League Elite Camp.

While the New Jersey native has not made a public announcement, he has one year left of eligibility. Rutgers backcourt would receive a significant boost with him back on the roster. During his time at Piscataway, Rutgers has gone 73-52 with the Gill St. Bernard’s High School product in the lineup.

As Mulcahy dealt with injuries last season, he still made an impact when he was healthy. In 30 games, Mulcahy averaged 8.3 points, the second-highest total of his career. He was also a threat on defense, setting a career-high in steals with 46.

If he does return, the talented guard will also have a chance to make program history. Mulcahy could lead Rutgers to the most NCAA Tournament appearances in a four-season stretch. For a team with much to prove, that would be added motivation.

While Mulcahy has a few options, such as pursuing a professional career overseas or entering the transfer portal, Rutgers fans hope he is back in Piscataway in the fall.

Jamichael Davis has the potential to run the offense for Rutgers basketball

Jamichael Davis has the potential to be an impact freshman for Rutgers basketball.

While the start of the college basketball season is still months away, Rutgers roster is full of question marks. Earlier this week, Cam Spencer entered the transfer portal. Clifford Omoruyi and Paul Mulcahy are also testing the NBA draft waters leaving their status for next season in question. However, Rutgers does have a few reinforcements coming, including Jamichael Davis.

In December, Davis chose Rutgers over VCU, Auburn, and Wichita State, among others. He drew various degrees of interest after averaging 22 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game in his junior season. The talented point guard will be relied on to set the tone offensively, which will be critical without Spencer.

While the Georgia native was unranked on all recruiting platforms, his speed and agility make him a tough matchup on the perimeter. Due to his ability to drive past defenders with his first step, some scouts have compared him to Houston Rockets shooting guard Jalen Green.

Additionally, Davis received high praise from his head coach at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Josh Laney, who, in an interview with The Daily Targum, highlighted Davis’ mentality on the court.

“He has such a high basketball IQ. He’s such a smart player. He sees the floor so well. I mean, he probably sees it better than I do,” Laney said. “He’s very calm. He’s very self-centered. You can’t get him rattled, generally. His mind is always focused on the task at hand.”

As opening night draws closer, Davis will be watched closely. The Scarlet Knights are looking for a spark offensively, and Davis’ athleticism fits perfectly with how this team is constructed. When the season begins, Rutgers’s newest guard will be a crucial part of the offense and an exciting player to watch.

Rutgers basketball: Cam Spencer enters transfer portal

Cam Spencer has entered the transfer portal from Rutgers basketball.

While the college basketball season is still months away, surprising news broke on Friday regarding Rutgers. According to NJ Advance Media, starting guard and leading scorer Cam Spencer entered the transfer portal. His departure creates a massive hole for Rutgers.

During the 2022- 2023 campaign, the Davidsonville native averaged 13.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 31.5 points per game. He shot 89.4 percent from the free-throw line and averaged two steals per game. Spencer only spent one year in Piscataway, but he made an instant impact. He will be immediately eligible to play at his next school.

Spencer transferred to Rutgers before the start of last season after spending three years with Loyola-Maryland. He was shot over 40 percent from beyond the arc and was one of Rutgers best scorers on a team that exceled defensively.

With his exit, Rutgers now has six open scholarships. Two of those spots are reserved for Clifford Omoruyi and Paul Mulcahy, who are seeing what the NBA Draft waters have to offer while maintaining their collegiate eligibility. Later this week, 2023 commit Jamichael David is expected to sign his letter of intent.

As Rutgers prepares for the 2023-2024 campaign, replacing Spencer will not be easy. He was a reliable two-way player and a leader on the court. Rutgers did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament last season, and doing so without Spencer in the lineup next season will be more challenging.

Rutgers men’s basketball Paul Mulcahy declares for 2023 NBA Draft

Rutgers men’s basketball senior guard Paul Mulcahy announced he plans on entering the 2023 NBA Draft.

Rutgers men’s basketball senior guard Paul Mulcahy announced on Thursday he is testing the waters and exploring the NBA draft. He will not hire an agent, leaving the door open for a possible return to Rutgers.

Mulcahy was an anchor for the Scarlet Knights these past few seasons, ranking fourth all-time in career assists with 457. Rutgers’ senior guard ran point guard for the Scarlet Knights for the past two seasons, shooting 45.1 percent for his career (308-683). Throughout his Rutgers career, Mulcahy combined for 818 points, 457 rebounds, and 112 steals. Since Mulcahy has been on the roster, the Scarlet Knights produced four consecutive winning seasons for the first time in 31 years.

In Mulcahy’s career, the Scarlet Knights had 12 ranked wins (school record) and have beaten the No. 1 team in the nation twice (first time in school history). In a statement released by the program, Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell called his senior guard “one of the all-time winners on and off the basketball court.”

He was a strong leader for Rutgers and a veteran presence on the team over the past two years. The second half of this season, he played through a serious shoulder injury to help lead Rutgers to a third straight postseason appearance.

Rutgers to face Michigan in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament

Rutgers men’s basketball has a huge game on Thursday against Michigan.

On Thursday, Rutgers men’s basketball will continue their postseason run against the Michigan Wolverines. In the second round of the Big Ten tournament, Rutgers will seek revenge against a Michigan team that won the season series.

Rutgers will need their stars to be at their best if they want to beat Michigan.

In the first matchup of the season between these two teams, Rutgers was only able to score 45 points. Cam Spencer led the way with 11 points, and Clifford Omoruyi was the only other Rutgers player to score in double-digits. They will need to be a lot better on Thursday afternoon.

Additionally, the Scarlet Knights only made four three-pointers and turned the ball over 13 times. Michigan took advantage of their mistakes and outscored Rutgers by 10 points in the second half.

[lawrence-related id=24761]

While Rutgers is favored heading into this game, they have struggled lately. The Scarlet Knights have posted a 2-6 record in their last eight games. In that span, they have scored less than 60 points four times and been without a key player in Mawot Mag.

[lawrence-related id=24755]

For Rutgers, capitalizing on offense will be the key to getting back on track. They have talented pieces in Spencer, Omoruyi, and Caleb McConnell, who all at times this season have shown they can be difference makers. A big game from that trio and suffocating defense will make life difficult for Michigan.

The Wolverines will rely heavily on Hunter Dickerson, who is averaging 18.2 points and nine rebounds a game. Regardless of the outcome, this should be a close game between two talented teams.

Rutgers basketball: Paul Mulcahy has found his scoring touch

Rutgers basketball guard Paul Mulcahy is making some significant offensive gains the past few weeks.

For Paul Mulcahy, the start of the 2022-2023 campaign did not start as planned. The Rutgers baskletball guard missed a handful of games after suffering a shoulder injury in the season opener against Columbia. Over the last few weeks, he has started to round into form and has been a scoring machine.

In 20 games this season, Mulcahy is averaging 8.3 points a game. Over the last two weeks, that number has steadily been on the rise. As Rutgers has gone 3-3 in their last six games, Mulcahy has reached double digits four times. He has recorded 48 points in that span and is 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.

This, even as Mulcahy didn’t score in Sunday’s win at Penn State. It is a great sign for Rutgers that they aren’t reliant on his scoring.

But it is also encouraging that the Rutgers guard has done a nice job in recent weeks of getting to the basket consistently.

As Mulcahy has found his scoring touch, Rutgers has reached the 90-point mark in two of their last four games. It is the first time all season that they have accomplished that feat. While that is not solely due to the talented senior, he has provided Rutgers with a spark offensively.

[lawrence-related id=24550]

On a team with tournament aspirations, Mulcahy rounding into form at the perfect time. He has been an assists machine all season but now he is adding another element to his game.

While he is not the Scarlet Knights leading scorer, Mulcahy is emerging as a solid third option. With Cam Spencer and Clifford Omotuyi leading the way, Mulcahy’s recent play has given Rutgers another weapon.

[lawrence-related id=24521]

Following a disappointing loss to Indiana on Tuesday, Mulcahy and Rutgers will be looking to redeem themselves on Saturday against Illinois. The Scarlet Knights should be in good hands if Mulcahy can continue his recent play.
