WATCH: Russell Wilson responds to high praise from Bill Belichick

The former Badger is on top of the league right now

After another dominant performance in week one, Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson earned praise from NFL royalty. Following a 38-25 win over the Atlanta Falcons in a game where the former Badger threw four touchdowns and no interceptions, Wilson appeared on the Dan Patrick show Friday morning.

Among the questions that Patrick asked the Seahawks star was a note about Patriots coach Bill Belichick, Wilson’s week two opponent, calling the QB the best player in the NFL.

Here was Wilson’s response, near the beginning of the full interview on the Dan Patrick Show:

Belichick and Wilson will meet on Sunday Night Football this weekend in a showdown between the two 1-0 squads.

Saints rank second-to-last in salary cap space, but does it matter?

The New Orleans Saints have the second-fewest salary cap resources to work with around the NFL, but they can make more cash in a hurry.

[jwplayer yLuhcRHv-ThvAeFxT]

The NFL’s calendar has shifted into the first week of the regular season, with the Kansas City Chiefs set to host the Houston Texans on Thursday, Sept. 10. This transition from preseason and training camp into the next 17-week stretch brings many changes for NFL teams: including the salary cap accounting.

During the offseason, only the top 51 contracts are counted against the cap. But now all 53 players signed to teams are on the books, leaving the New Orleans Saints at an estimated $4.2 million beneath the salary cap, per Spotrac. That number is flexible and will change slightly in the days ahead as the Saints shuffle players on and off of the roster, but it’s close to the numbers they’re working with internally.

For context, only the Los Angeles Rams have less cap space right now (estimated at a hair over $4 million), while the New England Patriots lead the league ($40.3 million). Unused funds can be rolled over into the next fiscal year, but for teams focused on winning now like the Saints, excess cap space is best reserved for in-season pickups.

That can look like the usual rotation of veterans after free agent tryouts — or, more exciting, big moves at the trade deadline. The Saints rarely shy away from moving draft picks for players they think can add an edge to the roster, but fitting preexisting contracts under the salary cap is a different issue altogether.

That will be tough to pull off with just $4.2 million in cap space to pass around. But the Saints were just all in on Jadeveon Clowney, making a competitive offer against the $15 million contract he agreed to sign with the Tennessee Titans. They’ve obviously done their homework and have veteran players on standby, ready to restructure other contracts to make more space beneath the cap in a hurry.

So don’t rule the Saints out if some good players become available near the October trade deadline. Things aren’t always what they seem when it comes to salary cap accounting, and they just might surprise you.

SI predicts Bills finish third in AFC East

SI writer predicts Bills to finish 7-9 this year, third place in AFC East

For many, the Buffalo Bills are being mentioned as the team to knock the New England Patriots from atop the AFC East standings for the first time in over a decade. Buffalo’s core of talented young players place the team on a path of upward swing. With two playoff berths in three seasons on the heels of a 17-year postseason drought, it seems the Bills have turned the corner and is moving into the conversation for a deeper playoff run.

However, Sports Illustrated doesn’t see things panning out that way for Buffalo. In fact, a regression is predicted.

Whether it’s a hot take or a genuine lack of belief in the team, SI has the Bills falling to 7-9 this in 2020, settling in behind the Patriots and… the Dolphins (!!!) in the standings. The Pats lead the way in the prediction, while the lowly Dolphins of the past few seasons jolt to a .500 record.

Here’s the analysis of the Bills’ divisional foes:

I’m not sure what to make of my bullishness on Miami, honestly. The offensive line worries me, and the team doesn’t have an A-plus blocking tight end to make up for any of the deficiencies. This is most certainly a work in progress. However, the Dolphins are solid through the middle of the defense and will be able to handle well what most of the offenses in the division do best. And their cornerback play on paper (the kind of paper that doesn’t include advanced coverage stats from 2019) should be superb. With the emergence of Brian Flores, I think the AFC East is the healthiest it’s been as a division in years. That doesn’t mean New England will falter. It does mean that some strange things will happen, though. For example: I have the Jets splitting season series with the Bills and Patriots. I think we’ll see more splits than we have in years past with the pole position leader making up the difference on the out-of-conference schedule.

SI’s Conor Orr knows his prediction won’t be one that the Bills Mafia will enjoy. He points to the schedule as the main reason why he sees Buffalo falling below .500 this year:

I imagine Buffalo burning as I type this. I imagine my seat near the bar at Bar-Bill Tavern being roped off and I imagine Big Ditch Brewing Co. refusing to serve me any more (what a nightmare). What I don’t like for Buffalo is how their schedule dovetails into some pretty gnarly stretches, like Weeks 3-6 (Rams, at Raiders, at Titans, at Chiefs) then Weeks 8-14 (Patriots, Seahawks, at Cardinals, Chargers, at 49ers, Steelers). Those could be the kind of uphill climbs that blow up a season quickly.

While Orr did a nice job name-dropping companies in the Greater Buffalo area, there’s some areas to poke at within his analysis. Both Los Angeles teams come east this year, which benefits the east coast team. Oh, and the Bills defense is pretty good. Nevertheless, we’ll stick to the schedule. Anything short of a sweep against the Jets is a travesty. The Jets are closer to picking No.1 than they are to making the playoffs, and the Bills should help them get closer to passing on Trevor Lawrence with the first-overall pick next year.

The addition of Stefon Diggs bolsters the offense, making it challenging for defenses to matchup against the team’s passing attack. Yes, Josh Allen is still developing, but if he can take a step forward, there’s little reason to challenge that Buffalo could be seeing double-digit victories in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the Wade Phillips era. Allen also has offensive coordinator Brian Daboll in his corner. The coach has been effective in finding what works best for Allen and the two have chemistry built up together over the past few years. Sometimes teams just rifle through coordinators, look at Diggs and the Vikings. He had a new one every year there.

We won’t discredit that teams can fall off a cliff, whether it’s due to injury or regression. However, with Sean McDermott at the helm and Buffalo’s roster (at least on paper), compared to the rest of the division, it’s difficult to envision this team sliding back three games from last year.

AFC East news: Patriots name Cam Newton starting quarterback

Buffalo Bills rivals in the AFC East, the New England Patriots, name Cam Newton starting QB, team captain.

The New England Patriots have a starting quarterback and it’s Cam Newton.

At a team meeting on Thursday, New England head coach Bill Belichick named Newton the team’s QB1, according to the Boston Globe. The team made an announcement that all but cemented the Newton news, as he was named a team captain as well:

The team nor Belichick has yet to confirm the QB news, but various other outlets in Boston have confirmed it.

Newton, 31, joined the Patriots the offseason via a one-year deal with numerous incentives in the contract. While Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane were working their previous positions in Carolina, Newton was the team’s starting quarterback. That time also includes Newton’s 2015 MVP season.

Newton’s time in Carolina ended after 2019 as he struggled with injury in recent years. The organization also moved on from longtime head coach Ron Rivera.

Earlier this offseason it was expected that the Patriots would replace now-Bucs quarterback Tom Brady with his most-recent backup, Jarrett Stidham. Newton signed shortly before training camp, however, reports surfaced that once Newton was released by Carolina in March, the Pats quickly contacted him and kept dialogue open.

While Newton will be under center for Week 1, we’ll see what happens by the time Buffalo readies for their eighth game of the season. The Bills start 2020 against the Jets and Dolphins, respectively, and even play the Jets for a second time in Week 7, before ever seeing the Pats.

Buffalo and New England will first faceoff in Week 8.
