5 Alabama players selected first round in latest 2021 NFL mock draft

The latest CBS Sports mock drafted features five Alabama Crimson Tide stars in the first round. Ranging from Heisman winner DeVonta …

Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports put together his latest 2021 NFL mock draft, which features five former members of the Crimson Tide.

Alabama will likely see most of the team’s vital 2020 offensive playmakers selected in the first round. However, Wilson does leave out the team’s star running back, Najee Harris.

Most of Alabama’s first-round draftees in this mock draft are off the board before pick No. 15.

Patrick Surtain Sr. calls son ‘a perfect fit’ for Cowboys secondary

The former cornerback thinks the Cowboys would benefit from reuniting his son with college teammate Trevon Diggs in Dallas under Dan Quinn.

The 2021 draft is quickly approaching, but the list of college prospects that most analysts are forecasting for the Cowboys in the first round hasn’t changed all that much from the end of last season. In fact, a few names that many see as the most likely pairing with Dallas are the sames ones that were being mentioned so frequently as the defense wrapped up a historically bad campaign in 2020.

And one name in particular just keeps surfacing to the top.

Patrick Surtain II, the Alabama junior who turned 21 just last week, has been targeted by numerous Cowboys fans and football analysts alike in countless mock drafts as the team’s best bet in the 10 spot.

Surtain’s father, an eleven-year NFL veteran who played cornerback for Miami and Kansas City, agrees.

“He can do it all, man,” Patrick Sr. told ESPN Radio. “That’s why I think he’s highly-coveted, because he’s an all-around corner. He can play zone, he can play man. He comes up and tackles. He can play in the slot, if need be. So I think [Dallas] would be a perfect fit.”

South Carolina’s Jaycee Horn has impressed, too, thrusting himself into the best-in-class cornerback conversation with his pro day numbers that put Surtain on notice. Caleb Farley is still considered a solid prospect, though some teams may shy away from the Virginia Tech product due to a recent back surgery.

If Surtain ends up selected by the Cowboys, he would be reunited with his Crimson Tide teammate Trevon Diggs, the club’s second-round pick last season.

Both Alabama products, the elder Surtain thinks, would thrive in the system expected to be used by defensive coordinator Dan Quinn in his first year in Dallas.

“It’s the Seattle old defense. I know the D-coordinator who was in Seattle when they had the Legion of Boom. So I think it’s a lot of misconceptions with that defense, about being a man in the zone structure defense. I think, for the most part, when I watched, I saw Richard Sherman and those guys play man on the outside,” the three-time Pro Bowler said. “Obviously, it’s a change-up to play the Cover 3 with them bailing and everything. But their physicality with him, [Trevon] Diggs’ physicality, I can see some similarities between Sherman and those guys on the outside. But I saw them play a lot of press, press man and the offset was some Cover 3.”

Quinn has already hinted toward going the familiar route with free-agent additions Damontae Kazee and Keanu Neal, both DBs he coached in Atlanta. They’ll be expected to help shore up a Dallas secondary that gave up the most points in franchise history last season.

Despite the Cowboys’ obvious secondary issues, the mocks’ consistent matching of Surtain and Dallas, and even Surtain Sr.’s ringing endorsement, the young cornerback isn’t a slam dunk to be an NFL superstar, mainly because everyone involved knows there’s no such thing.

Cowboys staff writers David Helman and Jonny Auping- as recently as this week- both expressed their shared belief that cornerback is “one of the toughest positions to evaluate, but it’s also one of the most important positions in the game.”

And that makes the question of whether or not to select Surtain II with the tenth overall pick such an important one for the Cowboys to get right.

Eagles land the top CB, versatile LB in Mel Kiper’s two-round NFL mock draft 4.0

Eagles land top CB Patrick Surtain II and versatile LB Nick Bolton in Mel Kiper’s NFL mock draft 4.0

The NFL draft is approaching and the Eagles have a chance to change the landscape of the NFC East if Howie Roseman can hit on 11 picks or make a huge trade to land an impact player.

Mel Kiper just released his mock draft 4.0 for ESPN.com, and the Eagles landed the top cornerback on the board and an impact middle linebacker from the SEC in the second round.

This draft haul would put Philadelphia back on the road to the top of the NFC.

2021 NFL draft: Chad Reuter lists ‘ideal’ top two picks for Chargers

NFL Media’s Chad Reuter throws a bit of a curveball.

We are a little over two weeks until all of the projections will be put to bed and we finally know what the future of the Chargers and the other 31 teams will look like.

After free agency, positional groups that still need to be solidified in the upcoming draft consist of left tackle, cornerback, safety, wide receiver, tight end and the defensive line.

Fortunately, with nine picks, they will have their choosing from some of the top prospects at those perspective positions.

NFL Media’s Chad Reuter recently completed a fun exercise where they identified the ideal top two picks for every team in the league.

For Los Angeles he slotted former Alabama Jaylen Waddle and North Dakota State offensive tackle Dillon Radunz.

The Chargers are often projected to select a left tackle with their top pick, but I think an elite receiver would be too hard to pass up at No. 13. Smith working in the slot with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams outside would be heaven for second-year starter Justin Herbert. Smith could then move outside in 2022 if Williams leaves as a free agent. Of course, they will need to address the offensive line early in the draft. Selecting Radunz to compete with Trey Pipkins at left tackle meets that need, and he showed at the Reese’s Senior Bowl that he could play inside, if circumstances require it.

This isn’t going to sit well for many fans because they know the need for a help at tackle and cornerback is too pressing, and passing up on both of them for wide receiver with the team’s first-round pick could hurt them in the long run.

General manager Tom Telesco’s case for taking a wideout at No. 13 could be that Mike Williams is set to play in the final year of his contract and Jalen Guyton did not prove himself as the third wide receiver after struggling with drops last season.

If Waddle was the pick, he would give quarterback Justin Herbert a dynamic weapon who can win with speed, quickness and route running ability to consistently separate and win with the ball in his hands, as well as a player who can return kicks and punts at a high level.

However, protecting Herbert’s blindside should be the No. 1 priority and the team does not have a bonafide starting left tackle on the roster. Reuter sees that Radunz is capable of filling that role.

While he needs to get better at finishing blocks, Radunz has the athleticism, range, foot quickness and run-blocking temperament needed for the NFL. He needs to develop more mass and add bulk to his frame, but his skillset suggests a high upside player.

For me, there’s two scenarios that would be the most ideal:

Round 1: Patrick Surtain or Jaycee Horn

Round 2: Dillon Radunz or Alex Leatherwood or Brady Christensen

or

Round 1: Christian Darrisaw or Rashawn Slater or Teven Jenkins

Round 2: Asante Samuel Jr. or Greg Newsome or Tyson Campbell or Ifeatu Melifonwu

Former Chiefs CB Patrick Surtain selected for 2021 Senior Bowl Hall of Fame

Surtain is one of several Chiefs players who’ve been recognized by the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame over the years.

A former member of the Kansas City Chiefs is being recognized as one of the best NFL players to play in the annual college All-Star game known as the Senior Bowl.

Former Chiefs CB Patrick Surtain has been selected as one of five players to be inducted into the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame. Surtain will join former Colts WR Reggie Wayne, former 49ers OL Joe Staley, former Jaguars RB Fred Taylor and current Saints DL Cam Jordan as a member the 2021 Senior Bowl Hall of Fame class.

“We are proud to announce an incredible class of inductees,” Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy said in a press release. “Each of these men was a premier player in the National Football League at his respective position and all have the credentials to one day end up in Canton (home of Pro Football Hall of Fame). We are honored to bring this group back to Mobile to celebrate their great NFL careers.”

Surtain played with the Chiefs at the end of his career after spending the first seven seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He appeared in 55 games while starting 49 while in Kansas City. During his four seasons with the Chiefs, Surtain had 194 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, one sack, 28 passes defended, and eight interceptions.

Here’s a look at what Surtain had to say about his selection in the Senior Bowl’s press release:

“It’s a tremendous honor to have been selected for the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame. I just think about all the great players that have played in this prestigious game and to be recognized amongst the best is truly humbling. The Senior Bowl put a spotlight on me and the University of Southern Mississippi, which propelled me to have a great professional career. I am truly thankful.”

The Senior Bowl Hall of Fame was established in 1988. Surtain will join several former Chiefs coaches and players who’ve already been inducted such as Marty Schottenheimer, Derrick Thomas, Albert Lewis, Christian Okoye, Larry Johnson, Tamba Hali and Rodney Hudson.

Former Dolphins defender added to 2021 Senior Bowl Hall of Fame

Former Dolphins defender added to 2021 Senior Bowl Hall of Fame

The month of April is turning into quite the eventful stretch for anyone named Patrick Surtain. At the end of the month, Patrick Surtain II is expected to be one of the first defensive prospects drafted in the 2021 NFL Draft — potentially as early as the No. 8 overall pick to the Carolina Panthers. Meanwhile, his father, Patrick Surtain, will observe that life achievement as a proud dad. But while his son’s NFL legacy is only just beginning, the elder Surtain’s impression on the game just got an added boost this morning.

A former great of the Miami Dolphins, cornerback Patrick Surtain has been named as an inductee to the 2021 Hall of Fame class for the Senior Bowl; recognizing his NFL career, which used the Senior Bowl as a springboard to get drafted by the Miami Dolphins with the 44th overall selection of the 1998 NFL Draft. Surtain will join the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame alongside WR Reggie Wayne, DL Cam Jordan, OT Joe Staley and RB Fred Taylor in this year’s class.

Surtain, who played 11 seasons in the NFL, logged his first seven years with the Dolphins, logging 3 consecutive Pro Bowl honors and one 1st-team All-Pro designation during his prime from 2002-2004 with the Dolphins. With 29 interceptions as a member of the Dolphins, Surtain left an undeniable mark on the defensive history of the organization. You could argue that those early 2000s Dolphins teams had a championship caliber defense — the unit was anchored by Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas, Sam Madison, Surtain, Brock Marion and others. The collective group peaked in 2003 with just 261 points allowed over 16 games (16.3 ppg), good for the third best mark in the NFL.

But that team somehow managed to miss the postseason with a 10-6 record; a reality that hits far too close to home amid the Dolphins’ latest shortcoming of postseason success in 2020.

But never the less, Surtain’s career achievements are undeniable. And now, just three weeks of his son getting drafted in the 1st-round, Surtain can celebrate another accolade of his own path.

Which Alabama players will be attending the 2021 NFL draft?

The 2021 NFL draft will be held in Cleveland, where players will be able to attend in person. Four Alabama stars have accepted their …

Alabama players are no strangers to being selected in the first round of the NFL draft, and the 2021 draft will seemingly follow the trend of recent years where multiple Crimson Tide players are selected.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, last year’s draft was held virtually. All players involved watched from home. Draftees will have the option to not attend the draft, but the NFL will now welcome them to Cleveland to be there in person.

The NFL announced today which players from the first wave of invitations accepted their invites.

Four Alabama players will be in attendance: quarterback Mac Jones, cornerback Patrick Surtain II, wide receiver DeVonta Smith and defensive lineman Christian Barmore.

There will be more added to the list as more invitations are sent out to draft-eligible players.
