PXG 0311 Black Ops drivers added to USGA Conforming List

Historically PXG has released drivers in February or March, usually after most manufacturers.

With Thanksgiving just over a week away, many of golf’s elite players are looking forward to a break from competition and a chance to try some new gear that will be hitting store shelves next year.

PXG released the GEN6 family of drivers eight months ago, but it appears we got a sneak peek at the drivers PXG staffers like Zach Johnson, Joel Dahmen, and Celine Boutier may put into play in 2024. On Monday, the USGA added three new PXG drivers to its List of Conforming Driver Heads, making all of them legal for play in official rounds and in tournaments like this week’s PGA Tour event, the RSM Classic, along with LPGA and DP World Tour events.

PXG has not announced any details about the yet-to-be-released PXG 0311 Black Ops, PXG 0311 Black Ops Tour-1 and PXG 0311 Black Ops Tour-3 drivers, but based on the company’s history, along with notes and images released by the USGA, there are a few things we can infer about them already.

  • Lofts: According to the USGA’s notes, the PXG 0311 Black Ops driver will be available in 8-, 9-, 10.5- and 12-degree versions. That means the USGA has tested all four of those heads and found they conform to the Rules of Golf. The PXG 0311 Black Ops Tour-1 will be available in 8-, 9- and 10.5-degree models and the 0311 Black Ops Tour-3 will come in 8- and 9-degree heads.

  • Shaping: In the past, PXG’s drivers have been smooth on the sole and aerodynamically shaped, but the sole geometry of all three 0311 Black Ops drivers is very different. All three clubs have raised heel and toe areas that flank a center keel section that gradually goes from wide in the center of the sole to narrow at the back of the head. The standard 0311 Black Ops also appears to be larger, from front to back, than the Tour-1 and Tour-3.
  • Moveable weights: In the USGA photos, the PXG 0311 Black Ops has three adjustable weights, with two in the extreme heel and toe area and a third designed into the sole portion of the keel in the back. The PXG 0311 GEN6 XF that was released in early 2023 also had three moveable weights set up in this configuration to boost its stability and increase the moment of inertia (MOI). The 0311 Black Ops Tour-1 has a weight in the forward-heel and forward-toe areas of the sole that could shift the center of gravity forward to lower spin and create a lower launch angle. Finally, the 0311 Black Ops Tour-3 appears to have the same weighting as the 0311 Black Ops Tour-1, with two forward weights in the sole.

  • Carbon fiber: The USGA images do not show the top of the 0311 Black Ops drivers, but PXG has used carbon fiber in the crowns of its drivers for several generations. It would be very surprising if the three 0311 Black Ops drivers were not designed with carbon fiber on the top of each head.

  • Release date: Historically, PXG has released drivers in February or March, after most manufacturers have dropped their drivers. The GEN6 drivers dropped on March 21. So, based on history, that makes this addition to the conforming list feel early for PXG. The Scottsdale, Arizona-based company has never had a booth or been a vendor at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, so having new equipment to show off at that event in mid-January has never been a consideration. However, this might be the start of an earlier release cycle for PXG. Don’t be surprised if the 0311 Black Ops drivers are released to the public in January.

PXG drops new tropical-inspired Aloha Capsule Collection

This year’s Aloha print features a floral design with classic black, white, grey and the collection’s signature green.

PXG has dropped a new tropical-inspired Aloha Capsule Collection. Golfers everywhere have Maui on their minds as the Sentry Tournament of Champions is well underway.

With the start of the tour in Hawaii, PXG officials felt the timing of this capsule couldn’t have been any better. This year’s Aloha print features a floral design with classic black, white, grey and the collection’s signature green.

The capsule features six signature apparel pieces and various on-course accessories. Accessories include river, blade, and mallet putter headcovers, a player’s towel, and a special-edition lightweight carry-stand bag. PXG has also added hidden golfer “Easter eggs” throughout the design print.

In addition to practicality, these tropical designs add a touch of personality to traditional golf prints. Adding the new green print to a wardrobe will provide a relaxed, laid-back, polished look for the links.

“The Aloha Capsule Collection is a fan-favorite for our PXGTroops, and I always look forward to its official release each year,” said Renee Parsons, president and executive creative director of PXG Apparel. “Hawaii holds a very special place in our hearts – it has become a second home for Bob and me. The tradition of sharing the aloha spirit with our customers through this lively collection is truly rewarding.”

PXG 0211 putters

The 0211 putters have a unique face to get the ball rolling instead of skidding, a non-glare finish and new alignment system.

Gear: PXG 0211 putters
Price: $189 each (at pxg.com)
Specs: Cast 303 stainless steel with speed-control insert

Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG) starting making golf clubs in 2014 and immediately grabbed attention with the unique look of its irons and the technologies that were designed into its clubs, but the price tag attached to those items also raised eyebrows. In time, the 0211 family was released, and updates to those drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons were made available earlier in 2021. Again, they shared many of the technologies found in the top-of-the-line PXG clubs, but at a lower price. Now PXG is updating 0211 putters for golfers who want high-end performance at a more budget-friendly price.

There are five 0211 putters: three heel-toe weighted blades, a small mallet and a high-MOI mallet. All five are milled from 303 stainless steel and have a dark, non-glare finish.

They also have a unique, milled Pyramid Face Pattern, with tiny diamond-shaped pieces covering the entire hitting area. In reality, they are pyramids that are designed to grab the back of the golf ball at impact and get it rolling instead of skidding after impact for better distance control and consistency.

The Pyramid Face gets the ball rolling instead of skidding and normalizes the speed of putts for better distance control. (PXG)

The size of the pyramids varies, with small ones packing the center of the face and larger pyramids in the heel and toe areas. PXG said the more open pattern offsets the loss of distance a putt typically experiences when it is struck outside the sweet spot. By going with a dense pattern in the center and an open pattern in the heel and toe, PXG is able to normalize the speed at which putts leave the face, which should help golfers achieve better distance control.

To help players aim their putts more effectively, PXG has developed a system it calls Runway Reticle. Based on an airplane runway’s design, the split arrow design encourages golfers to focus on the ball. Along with the alignment mark on the topline, it creates several lines that help ensure a player sets the club down behind the ball perpendicular to the target line.

The 0211 Bayonet is a classic heel-toe-weighted blade for players with a semi-arched putting stroke. The Hellcat has a similar shape but is shorter from heel to toe and features a larger back flange. The Clydesdale is the largest of the three blades, both from heel to toe and front to back. Its large extensions boost the moment of inertia and increase stability.

For players who have a large arc in their putting stroke, the heel-shafted V-42 has the most toe hang, while the Lightning is the largest and heaviest 0211 putter. A high-MOI mallet with a double-bend hosel, it is face-balanced and designed for players with a straight putting stroke.

Video: PXG 0311 GEN4 T, 0311 GEN4 P, 0311 GEN4 XP irons

Parsons Xtreme Golf updated its flagship iron family for more distance, better feel and enhanced customization, with three model options.

Gear: PXG 0311 GEN4 T, 0311 GEN4 P, 0311 GEN4 XP irons
Price: $349 each
Specs: Forged 8620 carbon-steel, hollow chassis with HT1770 stainless steel face and injected thermoplastic
Available: March 9 (pre-order)

Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG) debuted in 2014 with a set of irons, the original 0311 model, that featured unique weight screws surrounding the heads and a hollow-bodied design. They were intended to look like a muscleback blade in the address position but play like a distance-enhancing, game-improvement club. The secret sauce was the addition of a soft thermoplastic elastomer inside each head that supported an ultra-thin face without inhibiting it from flexing. The material also softened feel and enhanced sound.

Over the past seven years, those irons have been refined and now the company has released the fourth generation of the 0311 irons, with the T model designed for accomplished golfers, the P being ideally suited for mid-handicap players who want more distance and feel, and the XP meant for players who want the maximum in forgiveness and power.
