Chris Kirk holds off late challengers to win PGA Tour’s first event of 2024 at The Sentry in Hawaii

The win is the sixth of Kirk’s PGA Tour career.

After missing out on the Tour Championship in August, Chris Kirk rested during the off-season by working on his golf game – as a left-hander rather than as a righty, shooting a low score of 82.

“It’s really hard left-handed,” he said. “Really hard.”

Kirk, who won the Ben Hogan Award as the college player of the year, has been making the game look easy for years. His graceful, fluid swing as a right-hander long has produced his trademark natural draw and it delivered in crunch time on Sunday in the final round of the PGA Tour’s season-opening tournament, The Sentry, in Kapalua, Hawaii.

The 38-year-old veteran pro was tied for the lead at the 17th hole at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course and facing 209 yards to the green at the toughest hole on the back nine. With the wind, which had been non-existent all week, picking up he switched from a 7-iron to a 5-iron and struck a beauty that bounced on the fringe and rolled to inside 3 feet to set up the winning birdie.

“That one on 17, I’ll remember for a long time,” he said. “One of the best shots of my career, for sure.”

Nursing a one-stroke lead after 54 holes, Kirk capped off a bogey-free 9-under 64 on Sunday to win his sixth PGA Tour title with a 72-hole total of 29-under 263 and one-stroke better than Sahith Theegala.

“Just kind of kept reminding myself of no matter how I felt, no matter how nervous I was, there was nothing really stopping me from hitting great shots, hitting great putts, and I was able to kind of remind myself of that before every shot,” Kirk said.

Kirk returned to Kapalua this week for the first time since 2016, booking his trip last February at the Honda Classic, where he won for the first time in nearly eight years. In November, Kirk, who took a leave of absence from the Tour in May 2019 to address issues with alcohol abuse and depression, received the PGA Tour Courage Award.

During the final round in paradise, Kirk said he was nervous but he never showed it. The lack of wind left the Plantation Course vulnerable, and the pros attacked. The final-round scoring average of 66.7 was the lowest single-round average on Tour on record (dating to 1983), on the par-73 layout. Justin Rose equaled the course record with a 12-under 61. Sungjae Im closed in 10-under 63 and set a record with 34 birdies, the most in a 72-hole tournament since 1983. Kirk birdied four holes in a five-hole stretch on the front nine to maintain a narrow lead, but Theegala birdied four in a row on both nines to keep the pressure on Kirk. Theegala caught Kirk with a birdie at 15 to get to 27 under and one group later Spieth made birdie at 15 to make it a three-way tie at the top. Theegala made his fourth birdie in a row and fifth in his last six holes at 16 to take sole possession of the lead at the time, but he lipped out for birdie on 18 that could have forced a playoff.

“I knew I just needed to keep making birdies and there was a bunch of chances, especially with the wind laying down,” Theegala said. “Really wish I could have had that second shot on 18 back. It’s not how it works.”

Spieth was done in by a bad break at 16, where his tee shot plugged in a bunker and he made bogey. He closed in 65 and finished third.

Kirk stayed cool and calm to win the shootout, playing with “more self-belief than I’ve had in years,” he said. Along the way, he’s rediscovered his love of the game.

“Had it for a long time and then lost it,” he said. “I lost the joy of most things in life for awhile there. But, yeah, it’s certainly back. I think I just love how hard this is. Like, it’s so hard to be great at this, and I love the process that it takes. I love the work that it takes to try to be the best version of myself. I definitely have fallen back in love with that process, and sometimes you get rewarded for it, like today, and sometimes you don’t.”

Akshay Bhatia’s broomstick, Chris Kirk’s momentous par save among 5 things to know from third round of The Sentry

What do the past three winners of The Sentry have in common? A hot putter.

Before the start of the 2023 Fortinet Championship, Akshay Bhatia switched to a broomstick putter, one similar that Lucas Glover used to win consecutive Tour events only a month before.

Bhatia, a 20-year-old who broke through for his first Tour victory at the Barracuda Championship last summer, had a strong rookie season outside of his putter. He knew something needed to change to be more consistent. He switched his flat stick for one round at the Fortinet Championship and three rounds at the RSM Classic. It has been in the bag again this week, and through three rounds of the 2024 season, it seems that switch is paying off.

After three rounds of the 2024 The Sentry at Kapalua in Maui, Hawaii, Bhatia is sitting at 20-under 199, one shot behind leader Chris Kirk. However, the youngster is first in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

“I played nice today,” Bhatia said. “Didn’t make any mistakes. Made some putts. I wish I would have not 3-putted 18, and that’s what I’m going to think about, but it was a good day. We all played really well in the group. I’m looking forward to the opportunity tomorrow.”

What do winners over the last three years have in common at Kapalua? Leading the field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

The Sentry: Photos

As he mentioned, the lone blemish for Bhatia in his third-round 7-under 66 came on the closing par-5 18th, when he three putted for the first time this week. It resulted in a par, but nevertheless, Bhatia will be in the final pairing come Sunday’s final round.

“My caddie has been here plenty of times, and I’m relying on him,” he said. “Our game plan, we have a nice game plan of what holes we need to play conservatively, what holes we can attack, and then what holes we can just kind of plod around. If you make a couple birdies on the harder holes it’s a big jump, I think. Then, like you said, you got to make a lot of birdies. A lot of holes are birdieable, but it’s not the end of the world if you don’t.

“You just keep plotting around and hopefully you play this golf course more and more you get more comfortable on certain things. So, that’s kind of what I’m going about.”

Hereare four more things you need to know from the third round of The Sentry.

2024 The Sentry Saturday tee times, how to watch PGA Tour at Kapalua

Everything you need to know for The Sentry’s third round.

There’s a familiar face on top of the leaderboard after two rounds of the PGA Tour’s season-opening event, The Sentry at Kapalua in Hawaii.

Scottie Scheffler, the two-time reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year, shot 9-under 64 on Friday and is the solo leader after 36 holes in Maui, sitting at 16 under for the week. However, that cushion is over a big chasing pack, including three trailing by a shot: Tyrrell Hatton, who fired an 11-under 62 in the second round, Brendon Todd and Sungjae Im.

Chris Kirk, Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa and Byeong Hun An are tied for fifth two shots behind.

Kapalua’s Plantation Course ranks No. 2 in Golfweek’s Best list of public-access courses in Hawaii, and it also is No. 39 on Golfweek’s Best list of modern courses in the U.S.

Scottie Scheffler rolling his rock, Tyrrell Hatton’s ‘mad’ putting day among 5 things to know from the second round of The Sentry

Here’s everything you need to know from Friday’s second round at Kapalua.

Just two days after being named PGA Tour Player of the Year for the second straight year, Scottie Scheffler is staking an early claim to a three-peat of the Jack Nicklaus Award.

The 27-year-old World No. 1 shot 9-under 64 at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course on Friday in Kapalua, Hawaii, to take a one-stroke lead over Tyrrell Hatton, Sungjae Im and Brendon Todd at the midway point of the Sentry. He improved to a 36-hole total of 16-under 130, which marked the first time that Scheffler has posted 16-under par or better through two rounds.

Scheffler made his first – and so far only – bogey of the tournament at the second hole but bounced back with a birdie at the third and then holed a 25-foot eagle putt at the fifth. He tacked on two more birdies on the front nine and then reeled off four birdies in a row starting at No. 12. He circled his eighth birdie of the day at the last.

Scheffler, who won the Hero World Challenge in December, continues to show improvements in his putting since he started working with Phil Kenyon before the Ryder Cup in late September. Scheffler gained more than two strokes to the 59-man field on the greens on Friday. When he does that, he’s tough to beat. But leading after 36 holes hasn’t always been to Scheffler’s benefit. This marks the 10th time he’s held or been the co-leader after 36 holes on Tour and he’s converted just 2 of 9 to date, winning the 2022 Masters and 2023 WM Phoenix Open.

The Sentry: Photos

“Scores around this place are pretty low, but it’s one of those places if you go out there and play well you’re going to get rewarded. If you start not hitting it in the right spots, you can get in trouble,” he said. “Just got to keep the pedal down out here.”

Here are four more things to know from the second round of The Sentry.

2024 The Sentry Friday tee times, how to watch PGA Tour at Kapalua

Everything you need to know for The Sentry’s second round.

The first PGA Tour round of 2024 is in the books as Sahith Theegala holds the 18-hole lead at The Sentry in Hawaii. Theegala’s 9-under 64 was one shot better than the 65s shot by Collin Morikawa, Camilo Villegas, Sungjae Im, Jason Day and Viktor Hovland. Theegala won the Fortinet Championship last fall and is currently ranked 32nd in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Morikawa, who finished runner-up to Jon Rahm in Maui last season, is off to another great start but that shouldn’t come as a surprise. He finished seventh here in both 2020 and 2021, and grabbed fifth in 2022.

Kapalua’s Plantation Course ranks No. 2 in Golfweek’s Best list of public-access courses in Hawaii, and it also is No. 39 on Golfweek’s Best list of modern courses in the U.S.

Commercial-free golf returns: Last hour of final-round coverage at The Sentry to be uninterrupted

Commercial-free golf is coming.

The Sentry kicks off the PGA Tour’s 2023 slate this week in Hawaii, and Sunday’s final round will feature a commercial-free final hour.

For the second straight year, the last hour of coverage on Golf Channel and Peacock will be commercial-free, thanks to Callaway.

“We always look for creative ways to work with partners to enhance our golf broadcasts for the viewers at home,” Tommy Roy, NBC Sports’ lead golf producer, said in a release. “We’re thrilled to have Callaway back this year to present uninterrupted coverage on Sunday during the critical moments down the stretch at The Sentry.”

Golf Channel will have coverage of all four days of The Sentry, though two hours of play will be shown on NBC from 4-6 p.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday. There will also be coverage on streaming services ESPN+ and Peacock.

The typical handoff from cable to network TV is reversed this week. Usually, Golf Channel starts coverage before NBC or CBS pick up over-the-air duties. This weekend, NBC will kick things off before the final two hours being moved to Golf Channel.

How ‘intimidating’ Ryder Cup selection propelled Ludvig Aberg on stellar year-end run

Aberg would move into the top 10 in the world with a win this week.

When Ludvig Aberg was selected as the final captain’s pick for the European Ryder Cup team last year, he was put into a group chat with many of the game’s biggest stars.

Rory McIlroy. Jon Rahm. Viktor Hovland.

Problem is, he had no idea whose number was whose in the team group chat.

He had only Nicolai Hojgaard’s and Sepp Straka’s numbers.

“None of the other guys,” Aberg said.

The 24-year-old Swede’s rise has been meteoric. A year ago, he was playing in college for Texas Tech. Now, he’s one of the game’s brightest young stars and in the field at the season-opening The Sentry at Kapalua in Hawaii. Formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, the event is reserved for those who won on the PGA Tour in the previous year or finished in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup standings.

The Sentry: Photos | Thursday tee times

Aberg didn’t get his PGA Tour card until May, making his first start at the RBC Canadian Open. In between then and now, he has won on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and has been a part of the victorious European Ryder Cup team.

And it was Aberg’s selection to the latter that helped show him he belonged on the biggest stage.

“It was definitely intimidating,” Aberg said Wednesday of being a captain’s pick. “If I said it wasn’t, I would be lying because it is what you want to do, but it’s also quite nerve-racking at times. I think I did it quite well, just to be OK with it being intimidating and nerve-racking. I was just being OK with all the emotions that might show up and I didn’t try to fight it, I didn’t try to block it out, it was just try to embrace it and obviously have a lot of fun as well.”

His win in the Omega European Masters solidified his spot on the Ryder Cup squad. Then, he closed his rookie PGA Tour season going 61-61 on the weekend to win the RSM Classic.

Now, expectations are high for Aberg, who’s excited for his first appearance at Kapalua.

“I think there’s always going to be expectations, it’s kind of what you sign up for in professional sports,” Aberg said. “So I do understand that it is a part of it, but I’m always going to have a lot of expectations on myself as well. I know my qualities and I know what I want to do, so if I don’t live up to that, I’m going to be pissed myself.”

“So obviously I understand all the things, the outside noise, but that’s also nothing that I can really control. It is what it is and all I can try to do is play each tournament the best I can and then kind of see where that goes.”

With a win this week, Aberg would move into the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

As far as his expectations this year, he’s looking forward to playing many of the famed courses on the PGA Tour’s schedule.

“We were looking at the schedule the other week, and it’s just one tournament after another that I’m like, ‘Whoa, I just want to play it,'” Aberg said. “Bay Hill, Players, Pebble, Genesis, I think that’s what I’m really looking forward to. Obviously you want to perform, and I’m a competitor, so I want to compete, but I don’t have like a set number or something like that that I’m looking toward.”
