Owen Wright suffered a broken foot in Ravens preseason loss to the Packers

Owen Wright to miss time with a fractured foot suffered in loss to Packers

Owen Wright went from potentially earning the Ravens’ third running back spot with Keaton Mitchell on the PUP list to likely missing significant time after fracturing his foot.

Following Baltimore’s 30-7 loss to the Packers in Green Bay, John Harbaugh announced that Wright suffered the foot injury in the third quarter.

A Maryland native, Wright finished the preseason with 18 rushes for 52 yards (2.9 YPC), two receptions for 23 yards, and one touchdown.

Wright had four kick returns for 121 yards during the summer.

Baltimore could turn to rookie running back Rasheen Ali or scour the waiver wire.

Owen Wright is making his case for the Ravens third string RB role

Friday night was a major opportunity for Owen Wright, who seized it with both hands.

The Baltimore Ravens offense struggled mightily last night, but if there was a bright spot, it was running back Owen Wright. He led the Ravens in rushing yards (33) and yards from scrimmage (50), to go along with a solid 4.7 yards-per-carry on the evening.

Derrick Henry will sit out the entire preseason, while Justice Hill was also given the night off.

This opened up a significant opportunity for Wright, who seized it with both hands.

“Coming into this game I just wanted to show that I was consistent, that I could make plays on special teams and on offense,” he told the media room in postgame.

The 25-year-old made his case for the RB3 role in front of many family and friends. Wright hails from Bethesda, Maryland, a northwest suburb of Washington, D.C.

“Honestly a dream come true, especially being from Maryland, playing in Baltimore,” he said of the overall experience last night.

“It’s huge. Especially with my family being here, it was really a blessing, we’ll remember it forever.”

Ravens HC John Harbaugh has high praise for under-the-radar RB Owen Wright

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh had high praise for running back Owen Wright

The Baltimore Ravens signed running back Derrick Henry to a two-year, $16 million deal at the beginning of 2024 free agency. While the veteran will be a massive part of what the team does on offense, other running backs behind him could make an impact as well.

One of those rushers is second-year player Owen Wright, who many within the organization believe in. Head coach John Harbaugh talked about Wright to the media after a training camp practice, calling him a “breakout kind of guy.”

“I just talked to Owen Wright yesterday about this, and I said, ‘I think you’re going to be a surprise, breakout kind of guy.’ He looks really good. He’s in great shape. He looked good last year, and I think he’s going to pick up where he left off and try to make a name for himself.”

While Wright is not currently projected to make the team’s final 53-man roster, he could make a name for himself throughout training camp and the preseason with solid performances. If anything, he could be a firm practice squad name that gets called up to the active roster when needed, especially with his experience around the team already.

Ravens’ roster bubble: Each undrafted free agents chances of making 53-man roster

Baltimore #Ravens roster bubble: We’re looking at each undrafted free agents chances of making 53-man roster via @Thacover2NFL

After April’s NFL draft, Baltimore added 18 undrafted free agents to the roster.

With one week of the preseason remaining, the Ravens currently have 14 undrafted free agents on the roster, with three or four who’ve made highlight plays, and have a solid chance to make the 53-man roster.

After two joint practices earlier last week, the Ravens and Commanders will close out the second week of the NFL preseason with an intriguing matchup at FedEx Field.

Monday night’s contest could be a physical, hard-hitting affair after the practice sessions were marred by Washington rookie cornerback Emmanuel Forbes and Baltimore wide receiver Tylan Wallace exchanging punches.

With kickoff now five hours away, we’re looking at which undrafted free agents have the best shot at making the 53-man roster.
