Sign or pass: What Giants should do with pending free agents

Giants Wire takes an early look at the New York Giants’ in-house free agents and breaks down who should be re-signed and who should go.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen is entering his second offseason with the club and after a roaring start, he’s ready to turn the Giants into perennial winners.

It won’t be easy. Like last year, Schoen will be faced with several difficult decisions when it comes to retaining players. It appears to be a foregone conclusion that quarterback Daniel Jones will be back but at what price is the only question.

Schoen suggested the team will let the ’emotion’ of this season die down before making key decisions because it’s never a good idea to ‘shop hungry.’

That aside, here is a quick list of impending free agents the Giants will have to make decisions on.

Giants vs. Lions: 3 reasons for concern in Week 11

The New York Giants square off in a Sunday afternoon battle against the Detroit Lions in Week 11. Here are three reasons for concern.

The New York Giants will host the Detroit Lions in Week 11 with both teams entering the game coming off wins in Week 10.

From a record standpoint, the Lions (3-6) pose as one of the easier of Big Blue’s remaining opponents on the schedule.

The Giants are lingering around a 3-point favorite — usually three points is what oddsmakers give considering home field advantage. So, despite having a much better record, oddsmakers clearly believe that the two teams are pretty close when it comes to talent level.

The Giants have done very well against the spread this year, going 7-2 on the season.

With the Giants hoping to improve to 8-2 on the season, here are some causes for concern going into Week 11.

Giants’ Evan Neal, Daniel Bellinger out vs. Texans

The New York Giants will be without RT Evan Neal and TE Daniel Bellinger against the Texans, but are likely to have WR Kenny Golladay back.

The New York Giants will host the Houston Texans at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday and will do so with a few reinforcements.

Wide receiver Kenny Golladay is expected to return, and both cornerback Cor’Dale Flott and linebacker Oshane Ximines  could also play in Week 10.

Giants injury report: Kenny Golladay, Oshane Ximines inch closer to return

New York Giants WR Kenny Golladay and LB Oshane Ximines were projected participants on Thursday, inching them closer to a return.

The New York Giants were “off” on Thursday as they operated with a bye week schedule — meetings and a walkthrough.

As a result of the schedule, the team did not conduct a usual practice and media were not present. On-field work was limited and there were no changes on the injury report.

The Giants’ (projected) Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: TE Daniel Bellinger (eye), OL Evan Neal (knee)

Limited participant: WR Kenny Golladay (knee), CB Cor’Dale Flott (foot), LB Oshane Ximines (quad)

Full participant: WR Richie James Jr. (concussion)

Giants injury report: Evan Neal, Daniel Bellinger not practicing

New York Giants RT Evan Neal and TE Daniel Bellinger did not practice on Wednesday, but WR Kenny Golladay is trending in the right direction.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday and there was growing optimism regarding several of the team’s injured players.

Wide receiver Kenny Golladay participated for the second straight day and appears poised to return against the Houston Texans. But the news wasn’t as positive for right tackle Evan Neal and tight end Daniel Bellinger, who both remain sidelined.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Richie James Jr. cleared concussion protocol and was back returning punts — and he was sleeveless this time.

“Probably the first thing he did wrong was wear sleeves, cotton sleeves,” special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey said of James’ two fumbles in Week 8.

“It was kind of cool out, probably wasn’t the best decision and that’s probably on me more than anything else to tell him to take them off. The second is he just took a shot. Like, you’ve got to hang onto the ball. That’s just football. Good fundamentals, good technique, keep the ball, double in trouble. When you get in traffic, you’ve got to cover the ball up.”

The Giants’ Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: TE Daniel Bellinger (eye), OL Evan Neal (knee)

Limited participant: WR Kenny Golladay (knee), CB Cor’Dale Flott (foot), LB Oshane Ximines (quad)

Full participant: WR Richie James Jr. (concussion)

Giants hope to have Daniel Bellinger back by Week 11

New York Giants TE Daniel Bellinger is expected to return to 100% following his surgery, and the team hopes to have him back by Week 11.

New York Giants rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger (fractured eye socket) may be out for considerably longer than the team had hoped.

Bellinger was injured in the Giants’ Week 7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He missed last week’s game against Seattle and could be out for several more weeks.

The Giants have their bye this week and then host Houston and Detroit in Weeks 10 and 11.

Bellinger’s injury required surgery and the initial time frame for recovery was four-to-six weeks and it appears that continues to be the case. The Giants will go with their three tight ends on roster — Tanner Hudson, Chris Myarick and Lawrence Cager.

Oshane Ximines has a quad issue that kept him out of last week’s game in Seattle but is trending towards playing next week against Houston.

Giants’ Kenny Golladay, Evan Neal among 6 out vs. Seahawks

The New York Giants have ruled 6 players out against the Seattle Seahawks, including Kenny Golladay, Evan Neal and Daniel Bellinger.

The New York Giants will travel to Washington to take on the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday, and hope to come away with a win as they enter the bye. But an overwhelming number of injuries may factor into those plans.

Big Blue has been able to overcome most of their injuries en route to a 6-1 record, but Week 8 may represent the most-injured they’ve been thus far. But Seattle is not exactly the epitome of health, either.

Giants injury report: Evan Neal, Oshane Ximines among 6 not practicing

New York Giants rookie RT Evan Neal and LB Oshane Ximines were among six sidelined players on Thursday.

The New York Giants were back on the practice field on Thursday but short one notable player: wide receiver Kadarius Toney.

Prior to practice, the Giants dealt Toney to the Kansas City Chiefs for a pair of 2023 NFL draft picks and then KT seemed to imply he had been healthy despite not practicing. It was a bizarre situation but one that at least came to a conclusion in East Rutherford.

Back at team facilities, little changed as far as injured players. The only notable difference was that one name disappeared from his seemingly permanent injured status.

The Giants’ Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: WR Kenny Golladay (knee), OLB Oshane Ximines (quad), CB Cor’Dale Flott (calf), TE Daniel Bellinger (eye), OL Evan Neal (knee), OL Ben Bredeson (knee)

Limited participant: OL Tyre Phillips (toe), DB Jason Pinnock (foot), DL Leonard Williams (elbow)

Full participant: N/A

Giants injury report: Kadarius Toney among 7 not practicing

New York Giants wide receivers Kadarius Toney and Kenny Golladay were among seven players who missed Wednesday’s practice.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday in preparation for a Week 8 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The news on player health was mixed. A downward trend continued for wide receivers Kadarius Toney and Kenny Golladay, but there was the welcomed return of four players.

Offensive lineman Nick Gates and Matt Peart, cornerback Rodarius Williams and edge rusher Elerson Smith all returned in some form of fashion. Some had their 21-day window opened, others had been activated from IR and Gates was added back to the 53-man roster outright.

The Giants’ Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring), WR Kenny Golladay (knee), OLB Oshane Ximines (quad), CB Cor’Dale Flott (calf), TE Daniel Bellinger (eye), OL Evan Neal (knee), OL Ben Bredeson (knee)

Limited participant: OL Tyre Phillips (toe), DB Jason Pinnock (foot), DL Leonard Williams (elbow)

Full participant: N/A

Giants’ Kadarius Toney, Azeez Ojulari among 5 out vs. Jaguars

The New York Giants have ruled 5 players out against the Jacksonville Jaguars, including Azeez Ojulari, Oshane Ximines and Kadarius Toney.

The New York Giants had hoped to enter Week 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars improving in the health department, but they ultimately fell short.

Not only will the Giants be without the usual round of injured players, they’re now dealing with the loss of Oshane Ximines and the remaining absence of Azeez Ojulari. And they’re juggling injuries to Andrew Thomas and Jon Feliciano.
