5 surprising NBA free agents (Markelle Fultz!) not currently signed before the season

How did NO ONE scoop Markelle Fultz?!

With the 2024-25 NBA season about to soon begin, there are several notable players who are shockingly unemployed.

It is not terribly surprising when notable veterans eventually age out of the market and do not settle on a home before the new season tips off. There are a few examples of that around the league right now (e.g. Robert Covington, Jae Crowder, JaVale McGee, Bismack Biyombo, and Justin Holiday) just like every other year.

Meanwhile, there are typically high draft picks who didn’t exactly reach their potential (e.g. Killian Hayes, James Bouknight, Kevin Knox, and James Bouknight) readily available as well.

But when slightly younger players who have shown promise do not have anywhere to play, it deserves a bit more of an eyebrow raise. Here are some of those names.

Markelle Fultz

Once the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft who never quite materialized, it was exciting to see Fultz reinvent himself over the past few seasons in Orlando. During the 2022-23 campaign, he started all 60 games he played for the Magic while averaging a career-high 14.0 points to go with 5.7 assists per game. But after some shooting regression last season, Fultz did not yet land a new NBA contract.

Dennis Smith Jr.

Perhaps the most puzzling player who is not currently signed to an NBA deal is Dennis Smith Jr., who likely won’t have to wait too long until a team seeks out his services. Last season, per dunksandthrees, Smith ranked in the 98th percentile among all players in Defensive Estimated Plus-Minus. With his remarkable athleticism, he should have a spot in the league again soon.

Oshae Brissett

Celtics executive Brad Stevens said that Oshae Brissett was “terrific” for Boston during their championship season, but the wing did not return to the roster or find a new home. Brissett seems ready to get back in the league as soon as possible with the right situation.

Lonnie Walker IV

While he got a look from Boston this offseason and scoring as many as 20 points in a preseason appearance, Lonnie Walker IV did not make the roster this year. He is reportedly getting looks from teams overseas, but if he stays patient, an opportunity in the NBA could present itself again soon.

Nassir Little

Another interesting free agent who is currently available is Nassir Little. After beginning his career with the Portland Trail Blazers and spending last season with the Phoenix Suns, the 24-year-old forward played the preseason for the Heat. He did not make the roster but could become an underrated free agency signing for a different franchise.

Could Oshae Brissett return to the Boston Celtics?

Oshae Brissett is yet to find a new team and could potentially return to the Boston Celtics ahead of next season.

Oshae Brissett was an important role player during the Boston Celtics run to the 2024 NBA championship. He is currently a free agent after deciding to test his market after the season concluded. Brissett is yet to land with a new team and, as such, could potentially return to Boston.

Despite his offensive struggles, Brissett found a role for himself off the Celtics bench. He provided physicality and defensive intensity and often operated as a catalyst when the team looked to be taking its foot off the gas. Brissett is also positionally versatile and has a knack for coming up with big-time rebounds.

During a recent episode of the “How ‘Bout Them Celtics?” podcast, hosts Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance were joined by Bobby Krivitsky to discuss the potential of Brissett returning to the Celtics for the upcoming season. If Boston did retain the energetic forward, it would mean their entire championship-winning roster remains intact.

Will Oshae Brissett re-sign with the Boston Celtics in free agency this summer?

Could Brissett find an opportunity with more playing time, or perhaps even a bit more than the minimum?

Will backup big man Oshae Brissett re-sign with the Boston Celtics in free agency this summer? The former Indiana Pacer had by all accounts a solid if unremarkable 2023-24 regular season with the Celtics, and saw his role shrink significantly from an already minor one in the postseason.

But he did play some important minutes in the series with his former ball club, and plays a position of need for the Celtics. “While not an elite floor-stretcher, his good physical profile and resultant strong multi-positional defense made him a very solid tenth man, and the occasional highlight-reel plays added some sprinkles to the cake,” writes Mark Deeks on our sister site, HoopsHype.

“In a world where Derrick Jones Jr’s price is the minimum salary, so is Brissett’s, but here is as good as anywhere.”

Could Brissett find an opportunity with more playing time, or perhaps even a bit more than the minimum? Perhaps, but as Deeks insinuates, it won’t be on a team that has a better shot to win it all in 2024.

Backup Boston Celtics big man Oshae Brissett opts out of his contract

It is unclear whether Boston can retain him for their 2024-25 campaign.

Backup Boston Celtics big man Oshae Brissett has reportedly opted out of his current Celtics contract to become an unrestricted free agent for the 2024 NBA free agency period soon to arrive. CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning took some time to react to the news in a recent episode of the “Garden Report” podcast.

Manning says that it is unclear whether Boston can retain him for their 2024-25 campaign, given that reserve centers Luke Kornet and Xavier Tillman are also free agents heading into the 2024 offseason. He also thinks that the Celtics will have to eventually replace Brissett given the skill set he brings to the team.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what he had to say about Brissett’s future in Boston.

Oshae Brissett on winning the 2024 NBA Championship with the Boston Celtics

As it was for many, the night was surreal for Brissett.

Boston Celtics backup forward Oshae Brissett claims that he always knew that he would one day make the NBA. And given the fact that the Canadian big man is on the Celtics, he doesn’t have too much to worry about with that prediction from earlier in life.

But Brissett also recently shared that he had never really fully bought that he would one day win an NBA title. Yet, after helping to beat the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals, that is indeed what has happened. And to that end, he spoke to CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning about winning an NBA championship with the Celtics after Boston beat the Mavs.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say.

Celtics’ Joe Mazzulla found a winning formula against Pacers

Did Joe Mazzulla stumble onto a winning formula in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals?

Joe Mazzulla was forced to alter his rotation during the Boston Celtics win over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday (May 23). Luke Kornet suffered a wrist injury, leaving the Celtics short at the center position. As such, Mazzulla gave Oshae Brissett some time on the floor, and his presence on the defensive end helped change the game for the Celtics.

Brissett gave Boston more mobility and intensity on defense. His rebounding was an important factor for the Celtics’ second unit, and his willingness to switch on the perimeter allowed his team to move away from the drop coverage that Indiana consistently tried to exploit.

In the latest episode of the “Celtics Chronicle” podcast, the hosts discussed whether Mazzulla should stick with Brissett for the remainder of the series. The energetic wing has rarely seen the floor during the playoffs; however, the series against Indiana appears to be tailor-made for what he brings off the bench.

Injury Report: Oshae Brissett questionable for Celtics vs. Mavericks

Oshae Brissett is questionable for the Boston Celtics game against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday.

Due to personal reasons, Oshae Brissett has been listed as questionable for the Boston Celtics game against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday (March 1). Outside of the energetic wing, the Celtics have a clean bill of health. As such, their primary rotation will be at full strength when Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving visit the TD Garden.

Dallas has won eight of their last 10 games and looked like a vastly improved team since adding PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford at the trade deadline. With that in mind, the Celtics will face a stern test as they bid to win their 10th straight game and continue setting the pace in the Eastern Conference.

Brissett has played a total of four minutes and forty eight seconds over the past three games, so his absence shouldn’t be too much of a blow for the Celtics coaching staff. However, he does provide energy and has proven capable of swinging momentum in close games.

Should Brissett be officially ruled out, it will be interesting to see who Joe Mazzulla turns to if the Celtics find themselves needing an energy boost off the bench.

Oshae Brissett is providing a behind-the-scenes look at the Celtics roster

The Boston Celtics forward revealed why he documents his life as an NBA role player for his social media following.

Oshae Brissett has slowly begun cracking the Boston Celtics roster. The energetic wing, who is in his fifth NBA season, has proven himself to be a spark plug off the bench. Brissett is viewed as a potential energy shifter on nights when the Celtics look flat, especially in terms of rebounding and on-ball defense.

As such, Brissett remained with the team beyond the February 8 trade deadline. However, he’s also providing value to Celtics fans in other ways. Brissett has been documenting his life on his social media channels, including some behind-the-scenes content with the Celtics.

During a recent interview with NBC Sports Boston’s Abby Chin, Brissett discussed his reasons for showcasing what it’s like to be an NBA role player. He also discussed why he remains active on social media when most other players stay away from the negativity.

In typical Brissett fashion, he also gave a bit more information as he detailed his relationship with Joe Mazzulla and what it’s like to play for the Celtic’s head coach.

Celtics Lab 238: A deep dive into the deep rotation’s Stay Ready Crew with Noa Dalzell

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

The Boston Celtics have by most accounts the best top six players in the entire NBA to match their league-best regular season record. So, it can be easy to forget about the rest of the team. The so-called “Stay Ready Crew” mostly does just that — keep themselves in the right frame of mind and state of health in case their number is called.

And those numbers do get called, with players like Oshae Brissett and Lamar Stevens bringing energy and matchup-dependent options that have sparked wins for Boston, while the sharpshooting duo of Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser wreak havoc on opposing defenses. And if it were not for the likes of Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta defying expectations as reserve big men, you can be sure there would be less wins to the Celtics’ name this season.

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

To answer all of these key questions not quite getting the attention they deserve, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell.

The self-proclaimed Boston bench beat reporter who has a bead on a certain crew that stays ready, join us in a deep dive into the Celtics’ reserves. (Apologies for variable audio, wifi issues made for a few bumps).

Boston’s Oshae Brissett, Dalano Banton discuss Toronto’s food, fashion and culture

The Canadians recently took some time to talk about their hometown.

The Boston Celtics are a little further north than usual this season, at least in the sense that they happen to have a pair of Toronto natives on their roster this season. Forwards Oshae Brissett and Dalano Banton have become part of the culture of this season’s Celtics, but also bring their own culture from north of the border.

The Canadians recently took some time to talk about their hometown’s food, fashion, and culture for the benefit of Bostonians and Celtics fans from further afield to highlight aspects of their background we might otherwise miss. As Brissett said, “Like how I dress, people would say that I dress like a Toronto man.”

They even break down what poutine is, though they do not necessarily both share the strong affection for the dish seen in many Canadians.
