Jalon Moore’s evolution is pivotal to remainder of Sooners season

Jalon Moore has morphed into Oklahoma’s most important and consistent player.

Last year was a disaster of a season for No. 23 Oklahoma. They were abysmal, inconsistent, flawed, and simply not a good basketball team. Porter Moser knew things had to change, and in college basketball, for better or worse, your team can change entirely over months due to the NCAA transfer portal.

As players from last year’s team departed for professional opportunities, sought fresh starts elsewhere, or committed themselves to the Crimson and Cream, Oklahoma had holes to fill.

The most pressing needs were for athleticism, shooting, and playmaking. And so, Porter Moser and his staff attacked the portal with the desperation of a team down five points with under a minute left.

They pressed the portal hard and landed many players who filled their needs.

Javian McCollum came in with plenty of buzz as a sleeper NBA draft selection should he have a big year in Norman after transferring from Siena. He’s on his way to doing just that.

Le’Tre Darthard was a valuable member of a Utah Valley team that played postseason basketball last year. John Hugley IV transferred from Pittsburgh looking to reclaim the form that landed him on an All-ACC team.

Rivaldo Soares was looking for a more prominent role than he had at Oregon State. Jalon Moore started 15 games for Georgia Tech last year, where he averaged 7.6 points and 4.7 rebounds a game. He was a part of their rotation, but it always felt like he had more to give.

College basketball media even believed it. The pressure was off of him, too. In Norman, he’d get a fresh start, an expanded role, and thus the opportunity to flourish.

Moore has done just that, and Tuesday night’s performance against Kansas State culminated in a season’s worth of growth for Moore.

Against the Wildcats, Moore had a career-high 23 points on 8 of 11 shooting with nine rebounds. He was pivotal in the first half and equally impactful in the second, especially when Kansas State pushed to tighten things up.

He plays hard every game, even when he shoots poorly, and his motor doesn’t stop. His length allows him to guard positions 1-4 without real trouble. His performance earned him KenPom Game MVP, highlighting his efficiency and positive contributions to his team’s win.

Oklahoma is far from out of the woods, though. A massive road game against UCF is on tap for Saturday. The Knights have already knocked off Texas and Kansas at home. The Sooners need this game, and for them to win, they’ll need more of Moore.

Moore has been the constant, while Otega Oweh, Milos Uzan, and Javian McCollum have been inconsistent from game to game. The steady stream of high energy and winning plays Moore makes nightly could be the essential piece Oklahoma needs to weather the slide they’ve been in and elevate their play as we inch closer to March.

He won’t end up on any All-Big 12 teams because his numbers won’t reflect that, but there’s been no player more valuable to Oklahoma’s success this season than Jalon Moore.

Oklahoma offers Courtland Guillory, a 2025 safety from Klein Oak High School

Oklahoma offered 2025 DB Courtland Guillory earlier this week. a versatile defender with nice size.

Billy Bowman and Peyton Bowen are likely your starters at safety in 2024, barring any health issues, and that gives Oklahoma as talented a duo on the back end as there is in the country. Billy Bowman spurned NFL opportunities to play one final season as a Sooner, while Peyton Bowen’s story as an emerging star will look to unfold this in 2024.

Behind them is some uncertainty, but there are plenty of intriguing names like Robert Spears-Jennings, Erik McCarty, and true freshmen Jayden Hardy, Michael Boganowski, Reggie Powers, and Mykel Patterson-McDonald as possible options. Each of the true freshmen safeties have received praise over their high school careers for their versatility and physicality.

As Brandon Hall and Jay Valai build their positional boards for the 2025 class, those two things stick out the most. That’s why it shouldn’t be surprising that Oklahoma recently offered 2025 defensive back Courtland Guillory.

Guillory has played cornerback for his Klein Oak High School team. He’s has also been positioned as a safety or middle-of-the-field player. His athleticism stands out, as does his 6-foot-1 frame. Whether he sticks at corner or safety remains to be seen, but early returns show he has the athleticism to play both, which makes him an exciting option for the Crimson and Cream.

Pac-12 women’s basketball report: Oregon State knocks off No. 3 Colorado

Stanford is currently alone in first place in the Pac-12 at 7-1. Colorado’s loss slides the Buffs to 6-2.

The USC Trojans defeated the Oregon State Beavers earlier this season. That win looks better and better for the Trojans, given how well OSU has played since then. Oregon State just knocked off No. 3 Colorado on Friday night in Corvallis, shaking up the Pac-12 women’s basketball title race.

Oregon State allowed 24 points to Colorado in the game’s first 11 minutes but then allowed just 30 points in the following 28 minutes to subdue the Buffs, 68-62. Oregon State allowed just three 3-point makes to Colorado and forced 17 turnovers from the Buffs. The Beavers are a very difficult team to play against, especially in Gill Coliseum.

The result knocks Colorado to 6-2 in the Pac-12, out of first place. Stanford is all alone in first with a 7-1 league mark. The Cardinal blew out Arizona State in Tempe on Friday night.

UCLA is half a game behind Colorado for second place in the Pac-12 standings. The Bruins are 5-2 in the league after beating Washington on Friday, but did not have center Lauren Betts available. There are concerns about Betts’ injury status which bear monitoring in the days and weeks to come.

Utah rallied to beat Oregon in Eugene on Friday. The Utes and Oregon State are both 5-3 in the conference as they meet in Corvallis on Sunday afternoon.

Elsewhere in the Pac-12 on Friday, Arizona beat Cal in Tucson.

No. 3 Colorado drops low-scoring affair at No. 25 Oregon State

The Buffaloes’ typically high-scoring offense couldn’t get going in Corvallis

The Buffaloes have been a scoring machine for most of the year. In their losses, however, Colorado’s offense has been stuck in neutral. No. 25 Oregon State continued that trend on Friday as the Beavers held the No. 3 CU women’s basketball team to well below its scoring average in a 68-62 upset.

Colorado only hit 19 total shots from the field with the Beavers holding the Buffs to under 40% shooting. Oregon State was much more efficient from the field, going 25-for-52 (48.1%).

CU stayed in the game due to its success from the free-throw line, going 21-for-23. The Buffs got double-digit scoring outputs from Aaronette Vonleh, Frida Formann and Jaylyn Sherrod, who led the way with 19 points.

After a dominant stretch of games, Quay Miller had a rare down night as she could only muster four points on 1-of-7 shooting.

Miller and the Buffs fell to 16-3 (6-2 Pac-12) following their first true road loss of the season.

Colorado’s road trip continues on Sunday with the Buffs taking on the Oregon Ducks in Eugene at 1 p.m. MT (Pac-12 Network).

No. 3 CU women’s basketball looking to hand No. 25 Oregon State first home loss

Tonight, Colorado is looking to add another ranked win to its resume

In a battle of top-25 college women’s basketball teams, the No. 3 Colorado Buffaloes are looking to hand No. 25 Oregon State its first home loss of the 2023-24 season on Friday night.

Star point guard Jaylyn Sherrod and the Buffs are 16-2 overall and 6-1 to begin Pac-12 play — tied with Stanford for the best mark in the conference. The Beavers, meanwhile, sit 15-3 overall (4-3 Pac-12) and are a perfect 12-0 at Gill Coliseum.

Colorado is an impressive 4-2 against ranked teams this year while Oregon State is 0-3 against top-25 foes. However, the Buffs haven’t beaten a ranked conference opponent on the road since 2004, per BuffZone’s Brian Howell.

One of the Buffaloes’ biggest challenges on Friday will be slowing down Oregon State’s Raegan Beers, a forward from Littleton, Colorado who’s averaging 19.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game.

Entering Friday, four CU players are averaging over 10 points per contest: Aaronette Vonleh (14.4), Sherrod (14.2), Frida Formann (13.3) and Quay Miller (10.6).

Tipoff at Gill Coliseum is set for 8 p.m. MT on the Pac-12 Network.

Colorado blows past Oregon State to complete perfect homestand

The Buffaloes are off to their best start at home since before the CU Events Center was built

Colorado’s dominance at home continued on Saturday evening as the Buffs men’s basketball team cruised to a 90-57 win over Oregon State.

At 12-0, Colorado is off to its best start in Boulder since 1968-69, a full decade before the CU Events Center opened.

“It’s a function of the way we play and also the altitude, wearing people down and the confidence that they play with at home,” head coach Tad Boyle said of his team’s success at home.

Defensively, the Buffs held OSU to 33% shooting from the field, including a 3-for-17 mark from deep. While Colorado has struggled to defend the 3 at times this season, the Buffs bothered Oregon State shooters throughout.

“That was a huge emphasis for us, making sure that we defend the 3-point line and guard the ball,” senior forward Tristan da Silva said. “We did that tonight.”

Boyle praised KJ Simpson, in particular, for helping keep Oregon State’s Jordan Pope quiet. Pope entered Saturday averaging over 18 points per game but was held to only 10 on 3-of-11 shooting.

Colorado’s offense was also in peak form on Saturday. Julian Hammond III, KJ Simpson and da Silva combined for 14 of the team’s 19 assists, and the Buffs tied their season-low in turnovers with eight. Da Silva scored a team-high 19 points and Eddie Lampkin Jr. was close behind with 17.

Additionally, freshman forward Assane Diop scored a career-high 10 points in only 16 minutes of action.

“He’s soaking up knowledge like a sponge,” da Silva said of Diop. “We just try to help him as much as possible. We know he will be helpful for us as we move forward.”

Colorado improved to 14-5 on the season and 5-3 in Pac-12 play.

Boyle’s Buffs will be at Washington on Wednesday in search of their first true road win.

DJ Uiagalelei leaves the Pac-12 and returns to the ACC

D.J. Uiagalelei is transferring out of Oregon State and going to Florida State.

The story of D.J. Uiagalelei has taken another fascinating turn. The Southern California product who chased his college football dream at Clemson quickly tired of Dabo Swinney. He went to Corvallis — a most unlikely place — to play for Jonathan Smith at Oregon State. The move wasn’t a disaster, but it wasn’t a towering success, either. Moreover, with Smith leaving for Michigan State due to the death of the Pac-12 as a conference, Uiagalelei felt he needed another fresh start.

You might be surprised by the school which was willing to take a chance on him.

Clemson’s rival, Florida State, wanted Uiagalelei. Now the Seminoles have the quarterback, who has committed to the ACC school. It’s an amazing plot twist, given that a high-profile quarterback is now landing on the opposite side of a fierce and highly consequential conference rivalry. When Clemson and Florida State meet in 2024, it will be appointment television for this reason alone.

Oregon State, meanwhile, is left to consider how it will re-construct its quarterback room in 2024. The Beavers lost Uiagalelei to Florida State. They lost Aidan Chiles to Michigan State and the aforementioned Jonathan Smith. They have some decisions to make.

WBB Recap: Ducks collapse in second half against the Beavers

Oregon State crushes Oregon in the second half to take Round 1 of the Civil War in Corvallis.

The Oregon women’s basketball team had the Beavers on the ropes in Corvallis, but let Oregon State off the hook due to poor offensive execution.

The Ducks could muster up just 18 points in the second half, while Oregon State got hot and the Beavers took Round 1 of the Civil War 62-41.

Grace VanSlooten led the Ducks with 15 points and Phillippina Kyei added six points and 16 rebounds.

But those efforts weren’t nearly enough against a tenacious Beaver team that made several halftime adjustments after going down 23-15 at halftime.

A part of those adjustments weren’t very complicated. Oregon State began to hit shots, especially its three-pointers. After not hitting one trey in the first half, the Beavers torched the Ducks from the outside by going 5-of-10 from the outside in the second half and 18-of-30 from the field to outscore the Ducks 47-18 after the halftime break.

Raegan Beers had a career night by putting up 24 points and 17 rebounds.

Oregon State was quicker, bigger and quite frankly, tougher than Oregon and that showed up in a big way in the second half. The Ducks just couldn’t get any rhythm offensively and struggled to find open shots.

Oregon fell to 9-5 overall, while the Beavers remained undefeated at 12-0. The Ducks will now go down to Los Angeles to face two Top 10 teams in USC and UCLA.

Oregon State gets THICC 2-point conversion from 372-pound Tyler Voltin

Oregon State called on an offensive lineman for a 2-point conversion run

Not much went right for Oregon State in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on Friday against Notre Dame.

So, the Beavers had some fun after they finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.

Oregon State went for two and handed the ball off to redshirt sophomore Tyler Voltin, all 6-foot-4 and 372 pounds of him.

He barged into the end zone and delivered the two points. Yes, a THICC-2.
