How social media reacted to Sun Bowl: Irish side

Your thoughts after this one?

As soon as [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] had the celebratory Frosted Flakes dumped on him, it was time for Notre Dame fans to celebrate.

The Irish beat Oregon State, 40-8, in a Sun Bowl. They didn’t allow the Beavers any points until the game was well out of reach in the fourth quarter. It’s the largest margin victory for the Irish in a bowl game and evened their bowl record at 21-21.

A 10-3 season is nothing to sneeze at. While it would have been nice to get a better bowl game, there’s no arguing with achieving double-digit wins. Irish fans have reason to be optimistic for the future, and this victory will do a lot to help the program’s vibes. This should mean the fans are feeling good, too.

Irish fans took to social media afterward to celebrate this dominant win. Here are some of the best tweets we found after the final game of the 2023 season:

Hidden plays that dictated Notre Dame’s win over Oregon State in the Sun Bowl

Which non-scoring plays stood out to you Irish fans?

Notre Dame football got a blowout win in its final game of the 2023 season, defeating Oregon State 40-8 in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

There were plenty of big plays in the game that helped the Irish get to win No. 10, but there were a good amount of plays that you won’t see on the highlight reel that contributed to the victory as well. It’s not just those plays that help teams win games.

Find out below which of those hidden plays gave Notre Dame a leg up to help them get a huge win to spring board them into the 2024 season.

Five stars: The best and worst of Notre Dame’s win over Oregon State in the Sun Bowl

What a way to finish the season for the Irish

Notre Dame football finished its 2023 season in style, routing Oregon State in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, 40-8.

Head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] had to deal with multiple players opting out of the game along with departures via the transfer portal. For the Irish to come out and finish the season with an empathic exclamation point says a lot about the culture of the program getting to win No. 10.

It was mostly roses because there wasn’t much to complain about after an impressive bowl win like this one. Let’s take a look at who played the best, five stars, and the worst, one star, in Notre Dame’s season-ending bowl victory against Oregon State.

Notre Dame is fully healthy for Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl with a few number changes

The Irish are healthy but you’ll see a few numbers you won’t recognize

The good news is that Notre Dame football is healthy, as all players listed on the two-deep are available to play.

What isn’t so great is the fact that two players, wide receiver Matt Salerno and defensive back Ben Minich will be wearing different numbers. After seeing them play during the regular season, it will be a bit different looking for them during the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

Minich will don No. 31, while Salerno will wear No. 4 as the Irish look to finish their 2023 season with double-digit wins. The game is rapidly approaching, as kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on CBS.

Watch: Notre Dame football players visit Fort Bliss

The Irish players get a once in a lifetime experience at Fort Bliss

On Wednesday the Notre Dame football social media account shared a few photos of Irish players visiting Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.

Many of the players have been taking trips all around town, visiting local hospitals, hanging out with Tony the Tiger and obviously Fort Bliss. What we didn’t know is to what extent that the Irish had visited the military base, but with a video being dropped today, we got a better glimpse as what went down.

Take a look below at the video shared to the official Irish account, as the players check out some of the equipment, get into a few simulators and much more.

Notre Dame football: Five potential Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl breakouts

Who for Notre Dame do you see breaking out in the Sun Bowl?

The Notre Dame football team is going to look much different in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl than what we all saw during the regular season.

It’s partly due to this new version of college football, with players opting out of bowl games and also entering the transfer portal after. The Irish saw plenty of movement on both sides of the ball, as did their opponent Oregon State.

This can be viewed as both good and bad, but with players exiting the program, it gives more opportunities for younger players to step up and set themselves for big seasons in 2024. Here are five potential bowl breakout candidates for Notre Dame.

Watch: Notre Dame football players gives back to the El Paso community

It’s not all about football for the Irish

Although football is a huge part of the Notre Dame player experience, giving back to the local community is almost as big.

The Irish players are constantly giving back to the South Bend community, and they brought that along with them to El Paso, Texas as they prepare to face Oregon State in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

Yes, it is a business trip for Notre Dame, but it’s also a chance to show the locals that they care. In a video shared by the Irish’s social media account, you can see multiple players visiting local El Paso hospitals.

It’s a great gesture from the Notre Dame team, as they show they care just as much about winning games as they do about the people who support them.

Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl What Happened

– In an insane game with several twists and turns, UCLA – with backup Ethan Garbers in the game – went 70 yards in about 90 seconds to go up 35-34 on a TJ Harden touchdown run. Pitt only had 34 seconds and no time outs, but QB Nick Patti was able to move the offense enough for Ben Sauls to hit his fifth field goal of the game, connecting from 47 yards out for the win. Before all of that …

– UCLA owned most of the game offensively, but was crushed by five turnovers. It was up 14-6 and driving, but Dorian Thompson-Robinson got picked off by Bub Means for a touchdown – followed up by a two-point conversion – to tie it up. UCLA pushed ahead by two touchdowns on its own pick six – Jaylin Davies took it 52 yards for a score, and then …

– Down 28-14, Pitt scored 20 straight points with two Rodney Hammond touchdown runs and two Sauls field goals to take the lead before the Bruins went on their final scoring drive.

Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl What It All Means

Pitt was missing a whole slew of starters, but it scrapped and toughed it out to stay alive. The pass rush was good enough to keep the pressure on to force the five turnovers and four picks, and the O was saved time and again by Sauls finishing drives with field goals.

With this, the Panthers close a strange season with five straight wins and 20 victories over the last two years. For head coach Pat Narduzzi, this was a huge moment. He was 1-4 in bowl games before this, and the lone win was in the Quick Lane in a tough fight with Eastern Michigan.

Yeah, this sours the season a bit for UCLA. It had the disappointing loss to Arizona, the tough loss to USC, and the team that had the Pac-12 and CFP there for the taking in early November closed with three losses in the last four games. It had more of its top guys compared to Pitt – with a huge advantage at quarterback – and still lost.

Even so, this was the program’s best season since 2014, but a ten-win campaign would’ve looked a lot nicer. The program still has yet to win a bowl game under Chip Kelly, and it has won one since the 2014 Alamo.

Pitt’s Caleb Junko drills record 85-yard punt in Sun Bowl

Caleb Junko delivered an 85-yard punt for the Pitt Panthers in the Sun Bowl

Pitt punter Caleb Junko appeared to be roughed on a punt in the third quarter of Friday’s Sun Bowl against UCLA.

He was nailed while delivering the kick.

The officials didn’t see it that way and flagged the Bruins for running into the kicker.

While the penalty was definitely questionable, the result of the punt wasn’t.

It was fourth-and-8 so the Panthers declined the five-yard penalty.

Junko set a Sun Bowl mark with the boot that wound up counting as an 85-yarder.

Washington State vs Central Michigan Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl Preview

Central Michigan paid its ticket for the Arizona Bowl and it got an upgrade. Boise State couldn’t go, to the Chippewas moved from Tucson over to El Paso to get a shot at a Washington State team that’s had a wild and fun ride to get here.

The Cougars fought through their own adversity to win three of their last four games and six of their last eight. After all of the drama with former head coach Nick Rolovich, Washington State kept on winning, and it rewarded its coach by making Jake Dickert the full-time head man.

– The Cougars are going to throw and throw some more, but it’s all to control the clock and the tempo – they led the Pac-12 in time of possession.

The Chippewas are a whole lot of fun. They make big plays.

They make big plays on offense with the MAC’s second-best passing game. They make big plays on defense with the most sacks and plays in the backfield by anyone in the conference. They make big plays on special teams with the nation’s best punt return game.
