Western Kentucky pulls off epic 28-point Famous Toastery Bowl comeback against Old Dominion

Western Kentucky’s comeback was the fourth-largest in bowl history.

Western Kentucky looked to be down and out in the second quarter against Old Dominion in the Famous Toastery Bowl — which was held in Charlotte in place of the Bahamas Bowl — on Monday afternoon.

After giving up 21 points in the first quarter, the Hilltoppers found themselves in a 28-0 deficit after a Monarchs touchdown early in the second quarter. Western Kentucky would break the shutout before the half, but it still found itself down three touchdowns heading into the locker room.

The second half, however, was a different story.

The Hilltoppers outscored Old Dominion 28-7 in the final two quarters, sending the game to overtime. The Monarchs missed a field goal on the first possession of the overtime period, but Western Kentucky’s Lucas Carneiro wouldn’t make the same mistake.

His 29-yard walk-off field goal sailed through the uprights to give the Hilltoppers a 38-35 win and complete the fourth-largest comeback in bowl history.

The historic comeback was made even more impressive by the fact that Western Kentucky was without star quarterback Austin Reed, who has thrown 60 touchdowns in the last two seasons. Reed opted to sit out the game while he focuses on the upcoming 2024 NFL draft.

Without Reed, Turner Helton got the start but was ultimately benched after two series that ended with a strip sack and an interception returned for a touchdown.

In his place, third-stringer Caden Veltkamp shined. He completed 40 of 52 passes for 383 yards and five touchdowns while also adding 53 yards on the ground.

In the transfer portal and opt-out era, these bowl games can be hard to project. But regardless of the available personnel, bowl season always has some magic up its sleeve.

Virginia Tech coaches got stuck in an elevator, delaying second half, and fans had so many jokes

“This is real…”

College football is just getting started with its 2022 season, but it’s also, somehow, in peak form in Week 1, which opened Thursday with all kinds of wacky madness, including the now-infamous “puke six.”

While Friday’s schedule of games weren’t exactly the most intriguing, there was still plenty of chaos. Enter the Virginia Tech-Old Dominion game in Norfolk, Virginia.

The Monarchs entered halftime with a 10-7 lead over the Hokies. But in a hilarious turn of events, the start of the second half was delayed because, according to ESPNU’s broadcast, some Virginia Tech assistant coaches got stuck in the elevator on their way back up to the press box.

Per ESPNU’s broadcast of the game:

“We’re holding the game, I’ve just been told — this is real — because some of the opposing coaches are stuck in the elevator. So the coaches that would have to get up here to the press box to watch the game at the press level, which some coaches like to do, are apparently stuck in the elevator.”

Yikes, not ideal. The delay lasted for more than 15 minutes, according to The Athletic.

The game eventually resumed with the assistant coaches presumably no longer stuck in the elevator, but that didn’t stop the college football world from making jokes.

Old Dominion Monarchs Preview 2022

It’s been an interesting ride for Old Dominion football since joining FBS world back in 2013.

It closed out its 8-4 first season in 2013 – playing mostly FCS teams – giving up 80 to North Carolina, went bowling with a great ten-win season in 2016, spiraled downward from there over three years before missing all of 2020 thanks to the pandemic, and now, after eight years in Conference USA it’s taking off for the Sun Belt.

Granted, it’s on a run of four straight losing seasons – when it played – but it’s got a good young head coach in Ricky Rahne who knows how to get an offense going, the talent base was built up and worked on thanks to the year off, and after going really, really, really young, 17 starters are back with one of the most experienced teams in the Sun Belt.

This will be one of the more interesting teams in the expanded new conference. It’s got the upside to be a big surprise, but the slate is tough and the overall depth is just okay.

However, this is a program with a whole lot of pieces in place to become a factor in a Sun Belt full of teams planning on having big seasons.

Old Dominion Monarchs Preview 2022: Offense

The offense wasn’t always great, but it kicked in when needed over the back half of the regular season on the five-game winning streak to close things. There needs to be more of a running game, but the passing attack stepped up. With ten starters expected to be back, the O should be even more consistent.

The offensive line wasn’t great in pass protection, but it’s about to be a factor in the Sun Belt with four starters back and Donta Anthony ready to step in at center. Khadere Count and Nick Saldiveri are all-star caliber tackles to work around.

Leading rusher Blake Watson is back after taking off for 1,121 yards and eight scores, and Elijah Davis is also back adding a little more size after running for six touchdowns. Both averaged over five yards per carry, and they have to do the running because there isn’t much coming from …

Hayden Wolff is a big passer who’ll be the star of the attack over the next few years. The sophomore hit 63% of his passes for close to 2,000 yards and ten touchdowns with seven touchdowns, and backup DJ Mack stepped in and added a rushing punch with six touchdowns to go along with 856 passing yards and five scores.

The Sun Belt has some weapons to deal with. Ali Jennings averaged over 17 yards per catch with five scores as the No. 1 wide receiver, and Zack Kuntz was a First Team All-Conference USA performer with a team-high 73 catches for 692 yards and five touchdowns. Depth is a problem across the board for ODU – except at receiver.

Old Dominion Monarchs Preview 2022: Defense

The Old Dominion defense doesn’t have the returning talent the offensive side does, but there’s enough to be okay. It was great against the run but struggled against the better passing attacks. It needs to be more consistent and it has to generate a pass rush. However …

The main sackers are back. Marcus Hayes wasn’t a regular starter, but he led the way at one end with 5.5 sacks, but good interior pass rusher Sokoyo McDuffie left for UConn. Even so, the team’s top two tackles – Tyre Bibby and Alonzo Ford – are back.

Leading tackler Jordan Young is done, but Ryan Henry is an all-star in the middle who made 75 stops to anchor the two in the 4-2-5. The team’s No. 3 tackler Jason Henderson will find a role somewhere.

The secondary needs more big plays from the corners. Roger Cray was the main all-around playmaker, but he’s gone. Tre Hawkins was an all-star on the other side making 76 tackles, and now he’ll be the No. 1 cover-corner.

The safety tandem of R’Tarriun Johnson and Terry Jones should combine for over 150 stops, and on the way is Shawn Asbury from Boston College to push for the open spot.

Tulsa vs Old Dominion Myrtle Beach Bowl Preview

6-6 teams that had to win out to get to a bowl game tend to try harder.

There’s no lack of fight in a Tulsa squad that came this close to knocking Cincinnati out of the College Football Playoff picture, and then won its last three games to get here.

There’s nothing fancy about what the Golden Hurricane like to do. They want to run if possible, hit a few deep shots down the field to take a few chances, and then hope for the defense to take the ball away to make up for all the turnovers.

Tulsa has enough offensive firepower and balance to keep up any pace, but the attack was among the worst in the nation at turning the ball over. However, Old Dominion made almost as many mistakes.

This is a fun Monarch team that roared through the second half of the season with five straight wins after a 1-6 start to make this a wonderful first run – after not being able to play in 2020 – under head coach Ricky Rahne.

Turnovers are a big, big problem for Old Dominion – more on that later – but the downfield passing game is great, the special teams came up with a whole lot of big plays, and now the team is playing with house money.

Old Dominion vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

Can the 49ers actually close the deal?

They’ve been on the cusp of bowl eligibility for the last few weeks, but they’ve lost four of their las five games even though the offense is working.

The passing attack has hit 245 yards or more in four of the last five games, there’s just enough of a running game to control the clock, and considering the problems with consistency, forcing takeaways would be a big deal.

For all of the good things Old Dominion is doing, it has a turnover problem with two or more in seven straight games before last week’s win over Middle Tennessee – which, strangely enough, came against the nation’s leading defense in takeaways.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Old Dominion has been red hot.

It was a lost season with 1-6 start, but that’s okay. The program didn’t play in 2020, it was going to take a while to get everything going, and then things started to cluck.

The passing game was good, there was a nice balance, and from out of nowhere came a four-game winning streak to get in a position to make this a special season.

The defense has been great against the run, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte’s defense can’t stop the run.

The winner of this goes bowling. At home, Old Dominion will complete the phenomenal turnaround to its season by running the ball without a problem against the porous Charlotte defensive front.

Old Dominion vs Middle Tennessee Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Who’s the hottest team in Conference USA?

It’s WKU and UTSA, but all of a sudden, Old Dominion has become a player with three straight wins with a stunner over Florida Atlantic. Now the team can get bowl eligible with wins over Middle Tennessee this week and Charlotte to close.

What is it doing right? The passing game has improved, the defense has been solid, and to be obvious, the schedule has been easier. FAU was a great win, but all six of the losses were supposed to happen.

Middle Tennessee kicked its own offense back in against a miserable FIU team, but the O is struggling to get to 300 yards on a consistent basis. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

After taking a week off in the blowout loss to WKU, the defense cranked up the turnover train again.

The best in the nation in takeaways, the D forced four FIU turnovers last week and came up with 21 in the the last six games – and that’s without coming up with any against WKU.

Old Dominion is doing a whole lot of things right, but it also turns the ball over on a consistent basis with two or more in each of the last seven games. It’s going to give it up at least twice in this and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Middle Tennessee QB Nicholas Vattiato appears to have settled in. In place of injured starter Chase Cunningham, Vattiato completed 20-of-24 passes for 147 yards and two scores against FIU – and with no picks.

He gave up five interceptions in the loss to WKU, but Old Dominion doesn’t take the ball away. As long as the Blue Raider running game can work a wee bit against the solid Monarch defensive front, and as long as there aren’t any forced throws, the D should be able to take care of the rest to get the team bowl eligible.

Florida Atlantic vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Owls can get bowl eligible with a win, but there’s more to the season than that. They need a Marshall loss after losing last week, but if they win this and beat WKU next week, the Conference USA East race gets really, really interesting.

The defense has been among the best in the conference, it has a way of coming up big when it has to, and it’ll lock down on the downfield passing game – Old Dominion doesn’t really have one.

The Florida Atlantic ground game has been great, the offense has been balanced, and overall it’s strong enough on third downs to maintain control of the game.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs are on a two-game winning streak and now want to make a huge statement.

The running game has been terrific at times – rolling for over 200 yards in two of the last four games – to do a nice job of controlling games and converting on third downs.

Florida Atlantic’s defense might be great, but there isn’t enough of a pass rush to matter, the offensive line isn’t great in pass protection, and it’s a fast attack – it doesn’t control the clock.

The Owls aren’t going to come out and hang 50 on the board. The ODU defense should be just enough to at least keep this close.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Just how good is Old Dominion?

It was able to push Marshall and UTEP, and it’s been more than competitive enough to give Florida Atlantic a fight.

The Owls have been a wee bit inconsistent, and they’ve mostly been beating the mediocre to sad teams on the slate. This should be close, entertaining, and it’ll come down to the final drive.

Florida Atlantic takes the ball away, and Old Dominion doesn’t.

Old Dominion vs FIU Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs are overcoming issues with enough takeaways to get by.

The defense has been good enough to keep the team in games – there was close loss after close loss before finally getting over the hump with a win over Louisiana Tech.

The run defense has been outstanding, and it should be able to stuff FIU to a dead stop. The Golden Panther offense has failed to hit 300 yards in each of the last two games as the season keeps getting worse.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why FIU Will Win

FIU has to overcome its problems with lots and lots of takeaways.

Old Dominion has turned the ball over two or more times in five straight games and has yet to win the turnover margin. There’s a whole lot going right as the team is starting to play better, but it all goes away if it makes a slew of mistakes.

FIU doesn’t generate turnovers with just four takeaways, but the defense can get behind the line and there are just enough stops against the mediocre attacks to potentially be okay.

The passing game will push the ball down the field, Old Dominion has no downfield attack, and the hope has to be for the O to be more explosive.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can Old Dominion make it two in a row? It’s playing a team its own size without the defensive toughness to hold up. More importantly in this, FIU doesn’t take the ball away enough to matter.

It’ll be close, it’ll be entertaining, and it’ll come down to Old Dominion being better than third downs and in the final moments.
