Louisiana Tech vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The passing game is a whole lot of fun.

It has to bomb away to keep up, and it didn’t do much against UTEP a few weeks ago, but it got to well over 300 yards in two of the last three games and three of the last five.

Old Dominion is good at keeping scores low – for the most part – and staying in range, but it doesn’t have a consistent downfield passing game and turns the ball over way too often. It hasn’t been great against the decent passing games, giving up close to 400 yards two weeks ago to the WKU air show and close to 300 yards to Marshall – Louisiana Tech will get to 300 yards, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Louisiana Tech doesn’t have enough of a pass rush to bother the Old Dominion backfield with just two sacks in the last three games and ten on the year.

Old Dominion has enough of a running game to potentially slow things down, and if the passing game can be a balance and not force anything, it should dominate the time of possession battle.

It has GOT to stop with the giveaways. The Monarchs have turned it over two or more times in each of the last four games and ten times during the stretch, but …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana Tech has turned it over eight times in the last three and is hit-or-miss on takeaways.

If the Bulldogs can force the four turnovers – or close to it – like they did against UTEP, they win. The can win with three takeaways. Anything less than that, and Old Dominion gets the first win over an FBS team in the Ricky Rahne era.

WKU vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

Enough is enough.

WKU fixed the offense that was so mediocre last year, Bailey Zappe has been a blast of a quarterback who’s doing exactly what he was supposed to do coming over from Houston Baptist, and …

0-4 against FBS teams. The O has worked, but the team keeps losing shootout loss after shootout loss. There’s a reason, though – at Army, Indiana, Michigan State, UTSA.

Now the Hilltoppers get an ODU team with a passing game doesn’t push the ball down the field, hasn’t been great against the teams that can throw – but it’s been fine overall – and all of Zappe’s production should be too much for the Monarchs to overcome.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Old Dominion Will Win

It’s going to be a work in progress, but there are signs that the program is getting stronger. It might be losing, but it’s competitive – don’t blow that off.

The Monarchs didn’t play last year, head coach Ricky Rahne is getting his feet wet, and there are improvements. They lost to Buffalo and on the road to UTEP and Marshall – three teams that will likely go bowling – all by a touchdown or less.

The defense has been solid against the run and has yet to give up 300 passing yards, the ground game cranked up over 200 yards in two of the last three games, and …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

How good has Zappe been?

He’s hit over 400 yards in four of the five games and threw for 523 yards and five scores in the loss to UTSA. He’s hitting over 70% of his passes, he has only given up three picks, and finally, it’s all going to lead to a win over an FBS team.

Old Dominion Monarchs College Football Preview 2021: Offense

– Head coach Ricky Rahne gets to finally show what he can do. The former Penn State offensive coordinator needed to come up with an overhaul after taking over in 2019, and now he has had a year to try putting something together.

The team he inherited was among the worst in the nation offensively – it was the second-worst in total offense, dead last in pass efficiency, sacks allowed, and tackles for loss allowed, so …

It starts with the offensive front. The Monarchs were really, really young going into last season, and they’re still an inexperienced group. However, the recruiting has been strong enough to go along with what’s in place to potentially be passable around Isaac Weaver at center and 6-6 300-pound Nick Saldiveri at one tackle. Bringing in OT Tyran Hunt from Maryland is a huge help.

The running backs are going to be a question mark until fall camp. Blake Watson was fifth on the 2019 team with 116 yards, and Matt Geiger ran for 39 – welcome to the recruiting classes. Don’t be shocked if a true freshman ends up rising up out of the bunch – Obie Sanni and Jon-Luke Peaker are smallish, quick backs who can work in a variety of ways.

Quarterback is an early plus. Stone Smartt only threw one touchdown pass and six interceptions two years ago, and 6-5 Hayden Wolff threw three picks and two touchdown passes. UCF transfer DJ Mack is a 6-3, 230-pound veteran who brings the running power to go along with his big game experience.

The receiver situation was supposed to be a relative strength going into last year, but it’s going to be a big of a struggle. Leading yardage receiver Aaron Moore is back – he caught three of the team’s five touchdown passes – and 6-5, Nigel Fitzgerald is a potential matchup problem to go along with his deep speed.

Ali Jennings from West Virginia, Trey Blount from Georgia, and TE Zack Kuntz from Penn State will get instant work.

Old Dominion Monarchs Football Schedule Analysis: The Monarchs are back after not playing in 2020 with a trip to Wake Forest and a date with Liberty a few weeks later. Throw in a game against MAC power Buffalo, and it’ll be a positive to at least go 2-2 in non-conference play.

The Conference USA slate starts out with two road games – meaning ODU plays three road games in four weeks and four away games in the first six – but getting WKU, Louisiana Tech and Florida Atlantic is a huge break.

There’s no UAB to deal with from the West, but facing Louisiana Tech won’t be say. Overall, on the plus side, four of the last six games are at home.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Old Dominion Monarchs Offense 3 Things To Know

– The offense needs a whole lot of help in every way after a disastrous 2019. The Monarchs couldn’t block, couldn’t throw, couldn’t move the chains, and couldn’t run. Other than that, everything was great.

That’s where new head coach Ricky Rahne comes in. The former Penn State offensive coordinator and quarterback at Cornell has a big job to do to 1) find the right quarterback and 2) help the nation’s second-least efficient passing game start to produce. Fortunately …

ODU has a terrific young receiving corps – it’s easily the strength of the offense. Aaron Moore is a big, explosive player who led the team with just 26 grabs. The top five receivers are expected back, helped by former Virginia Tech transfer Eric Kumah, who was terrific in his first four games last year before getting hurt. Now they all need someone to throw to them.

Five Monarchs combined to throw five touchdown passes with 12 interceptions. Sophomore Hayden Wolff is a 6-5 passer who struggled to get anything going, but he’ll be pushed by former Michigan State Spartan Messiah deWeaver and former JUCO transfer and good runner Stone Smartt. Part of the problem was …

The offensive line was a hot mess. It was a relatively young group overall, and four starters return, but ODU allowed the second-most sacks and tackles for loss per game. There’s decent size and good depth to play around with the lineup.

The running back situation is very, very thin, with leading rusher Kesean Strong done after coming up with just 353 yards. Elijah Davis is a quick option, but there isn’t a much thump to count on. The recruiting class will play an early role.
