Oklahoma State vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The defense is the truth.

For years, Oklahoma State’s brand was almost all about the offense with a fun style and a ton of explosion. This one is more about keeping everyone in check – it has yet to allow more than 24 points – and grinding things out.

And it’s working.

It’s almost like the program is looking for more control in a college football world gone offensively mad.

The Cowboys are fantastic against the run, they’re a wall on third downs, and they bring more than enough pressure to be a constant problem in the backfield.

The ground game isn’t going to find a groove against this defensive bunch, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers do a better job of controlling games than Oklahoma State does.

The Cowboys can rely on their defense, but that goes hand-in-hand with an offense that doesn’t take a whole ton of big chances. The big pass plays are there, but this isn’t an Oklahoma State O that’s going to throw 500 yards and 55 points on the board against anyone but Kansas.

West Virginia can play a little D, too. It’s great at getting into the backfield – Oklahoma State has issues allowing tackles for loss – and it’s also great at coming up with third down stops. It’s not as good as the Cowboys are, but they’re strong.

No, there isn’t going to be enough of a running game to matter here, but the Mountaineers are winging it. Jarret Doege is on a nice roll, beating Iowa State with 370 yards and three scores and doing a better job of making things happen down the field.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can West Virginia really keep this push going?

It was dead and done after three straight Big 12 losses, and then it whacked around TCU and went off on an Iowa State with a defense that’s every bit as strong as Oklahoma State’s.

The Cowboys gave up more than 300 passing yards once so far – the loss to Iowa State – and that’s what it’s going to take to pull this off.

It’s the third road game in four weeks for the program, West Virginia is at home for the second straight week, and …

Again, it’s about control. Oklahoma State wants to do it with its defense, but West Virginia leads the Big 12 in time of possession for a reason.

This is a going to be a blast.

The Mountaineers pull it out on a walk-off field goal.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

We just did this, and Oklahoma State won.

The Cowboys beat the Mountaineers 85-80 to close out the regular season by hitting everything from the field, but that’s nothing new They’ve hit over 50% of their shots over the last three games and over 47% in the last six by moving the ball around well and attacking the rim.

West Virginia was stopped from three, couldn’t grab enough rebounds, and everything worked late. OSU is 6-1 in the last seven games with the only loss to Baylor, but …

Why West Virginia Will Win

West Virginia got Oklahoma State back in early January in what was basically the same game as the last one – it just flipped the other way.

Oklahoma State was solid from the field, it dominated the rebounding margin, and West Virginia lived on the free throw line because that’s what it does.

The Mountaineers are great at attacking, getting to the rim, and finding ways to pressure defenses. They got to the line 29 times in the first game and 34 in the last one. They’ve managed to get to the line 30 times or more in five of the last six games, and …

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll happen again.

Oklahoma State will rebound, both teams will shoot well, and the Mountaineers will get to the line more. While the Cowboys are amazing at cranking up the field goal percentage, they’re not going to hit 58% this time around, and West Virginia will make at least five more free throws.

Prediction

Oklahoma 34, West Virginia 23

Moneyline (ML)

Oklahoma State (-250) is a bit pricey, especially for a team playing without its leading receiver while on the road. But you can’t trust West Virginia (+205) despite its upset win over K-State last week to keep its bowl hopes alive.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Oklahoma State to win would return a profit of $4.00.

Against the Spread (ATS)

OKLAHOMA STATE (-6.5, -115) is a tempting play as a favorite by less than a touchdown. The Cowboys have one of the top running backs in the nation, and the Mountaineers are tied for 74th against the run, allowing 167.1 yards per game. That’s where this game will be won.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. The over/under (55.5) is going to be too close to call in this one. The Cowboys have a prolific offense, but with Wallace missing they won’t be hitting on all cylinders. The West Virginia offense is also a concern, having been inconsistent and just marginal all season.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

West Virginia just doesn’t have the offense to keep up the pace.

Even with the issues at quarterback – more on that in a moment – the Oklahoma State offense should be able keep the production going with an attack that averages close to 500 yards per game thanks to the brilliant, Heisman-worthy season from Chuba Hubbard.

The West Virginia run defense hasn’t been all that bad, but most teams are spending all of their time throwing the ball. Here comes Hubbard, who’s at 1,726 yards and 20 scores, with 121 yards in every game against an FBS team.

He’s 274 yards away from 2,000 with two games to go, but more than that for this week, he needs to hit a few early home runs to help take the pressure off the passing game.

West Virginia? It has the second-worst ground game in college football, and the passing game isn’t nearly efficient enough to make a dent if this gets into a shootout.

The OSU passing game will be just fine, too, against a mediocre secondary, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why West Virginia Will Win

Oklahoma State QB Spencer Sanders is out for the year with a thumb injury.

This, along with the loss of star WR Tylan Wallace a few weeks ago, takes down the Cowboy passing game a few notches. Former Hawaii starter Dru Brown is a ready-made backup to keep the machine going, but it’s a step back rom a starter in the midst of a massive statistical season.

The Mountaineer pass rush is just good enough to keep the heat on the new starter and make him press a bit. There might be a whole slew of problems with the WVU D, but it’s generating sacks.

On the other side, this is the week for the West Virginia offense to finally start to open it up a bit.

The passing game might not be efficient, and it might be having problems with its consistency, but everyone is getting fat on the OSU secondary. The Cowboys have allowed 250 yards or more in six of its last seven games and 273 yards per game overall.

Bowling Green transfer Jarret Doege stepped into the starting role last week against Kansas State and threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns in the stunning win. Now there’s something to play for.

Win this week, and win next week at TCU, and the Mountaineers are in a bowl game.

What’s Going To Happen

This might be a flaky West Virginia team. but it’s been playing better over the last few weeks. It pushed Baylor and shocked Kansas State, but can it win its final home game of the year and set up the TCU game for a shot at a bowl?

Here comes Hubbard.

Brown will be just fine. He’ll ball out and keep the Cowboy offensive moving  with enough third down conversions to keep the attack going, but it’ll be a big day for the OSU ground game to take over.

Oklahoma State’s defense will give up over 250 passing yards, but it won’t be quite enough to keep up.
