Oklahoma a unanimous selection by College GameDay crew for Bedlam

This week’s Bedlam matchup is widely known to have possible Playoff implications. All four of the College Gameday crew chose Oklahoma.

This week’s Bedlam matchup is widely known to have possible College Football Playoff implications. All four of the College Gameday crew chose Oklahoma, but the Sooners recent struggles haven’t gone unseen.

Desmond Howard showed some rare confidence in Oklahoma before picking them to win, saying “Jalen Hurts listening to  everyone talk about how he can’t throw the ball, they have a wishbone team. They will beat the Cowboys.”

Shortly after picking Utah against Colorado, and claiming they were one of the four best team’s in the country, Lee Corso asked Rece Davis if this game was his Super Dog. When Davis confirmed he picked the Cowboys to cover the 13-point spread, he said “Oklahoma, big,” amongst the rest of the crew’s laughing.

Kirk Herbstreit picked Oklahoma, but cited their recent turnover struggles, bringing up their -7 turnover margin the last four games. “They gotta protect the ball to be able to win this one.” he said.

Former Minnesota Golden Gopher and NFL wide receiver Eric Decker was the celebrity guest picker, and had confidence in Hurts to clean it up this week.

“Their close games have been because of turnovers, I think it’s gonna be different today. Oklahoma, big.” he said.

The Sooners and Cowboys kick off at 7 p.m. CT in Stillwater.

The 3 biggest matchups in Oklahoma-Oklahoma State

Three matchups will decide Bedlam. Here are the three biggest matchups in Oklahoma’s game against Oklahoma State.

It’s Bedlam.

No. 7 Oklahoma (10-1, 7-1 Big 12) has had a lackluster last four games, but came out victorious in the last three. No. 21 Oklahoma State (8-3, 5-3) is starting to hit its stride after season-ending injuries to star receiver Tylan Wallace and rising quarterback Spencer Sanders.

Again, the Sooners are in a must win situation if they want to play in the College Football Playoff and will need to win in style.

Here are three biggest matchups in Bedlam between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

NEVILLE GALLIMORE VS. JOHNNY WILSON

As the season continues to head to its end, Neville Gallimore’s production and impact continues to be felt.

A lot like the Texas game, the matchup between Gallimore and Oklahoma State center Johnny Wilson is the biggest one of the day. The senior nose tackle single-handily dominated Texas’ front that day, including center Zach Shackleford.

How Johnny Wilson deals with Gallimore will be the difference between having rushing lanes up the middle big enough for Hubbard to make cuts through and in, and will eventually be the biggest matchup in this game.

OKLAHOMA SAFETIES VS. CHUBA HUBBARD

Yes—safeties against a running back.

Hubbard has hurt a ton of defenses hitting cutback lanes and in outside zone concepts. Patrick Fields, Delarrin Turner-Yell and Brendan ‘Bookie’ Radley-Hiles will be stressed in the running game will need to continue to build on how they played against TCU a week ago.

Hubbard only needs a smidge of open grass to take a small run to the house, and Oklahoma’s safeties will need to be on their A-game against Oklahoma State’s latest running back superstar.

OKLAHOMA VS. THEMSELVES

It’s been a couple weeks since I have added this here, but it needs to be brought back up.

If Oklahoma doesn’t turn the ball over at the rate it has the last four games, this team is likely seen as one of the contenders in college football.

Yes, the Sooners slipped up in Manhattan, Kansas, but they have looked dominant in every facet of the game in spite of turning the ball over.

3 keys for Oklahoma against Oklahoma State

Bedlam is here. Here are three keys for Oklahoma as they travel north to Stillwater to take on in-state rival Oklahoma State.

It’s Bedlam.

Again, the Sooners are in a must win situation if they want to play in the College Football Playoff and will need to win in style.

Here are three keys for Oklahoma in Bedlam against Oklahoma State.

CHUBA, CHUBA, CHUBA

Oklahoma has heard about him all the week, and the Sooners are going to hear more about him here.

Chuba Hubbard may well be the best running back in college football. The explosive running back is averaging 6.4 yards a carry for 1,832 yards and 20 touchdowns. He’s Oklahoma State now, and Oklahoma will need to contain him if it wants to leave Stillwater with a win.

How the Cowboys’ offensive line is able to deal with Neville Gallimore, Kenneth Murray and the Oklahoma defense will be key. The Sooners’ front seven is going to be under a big spotlight.

TAKE CARE OF THE FOOTBALL

It’s science if you ask Alex Grinch.

Oklahoma’s offense is a great example of how takeaways equal victory. The defense has been just good enough to overcome short fields and being put in bad situations after the Sooners’ offense has turned the football over eight times in the last three games.

Turnovers are the difference between two blowouts against Iowa State and TCU, and maybe a comfortable win in Waco, Texas, against Baylor.

This game is solely on Jalen Hurts turning a corner and taking care of the football.

FIELD POSITION

The Oklahoma offense has put the Oklahoma defense in bad spots the last four games.

Alex Grinch’s defense has been good in 2019, but dating back to his Washington State days, his defenses has given up points when given short fields to defend.

If Jalen Hurts and the Oklahoma offense can continue to get deep into opponent’s territory, that will at least force Oklahoma State to have to go the length of the field with a backup quarterback and a more one dimensional offense.

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma State Cowboys sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks and tips

The Oklahoma Sooners (10-1, 7-1 Big 12) and Oklahoma State Cowboys (8-3, 5-3) hook up at T. Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Okla. at 8 p.m. ET for a little ‘Bedlam’. We analyze the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State: Three things you need to know

1. The Sooners are all set to face Baylor in the Big 12 Championship Game, win or lose in this one, but they’d like to top their rivals for a fifth straight season.

2. Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts needs 133 rushing yards to pass Jack Mildren (1,289 yards, 1971) for the most yardage by a quarterback on the ground.

3. Oklahoma State is just 19-87-2 in the previous 108 meetings between these rivals, and the Cowboys allowed 51.5 points per game (PPG) across the past four losses to the Sooners.

Prediction

Oklahoma 45, Oklahoma State 36

Moneyline (ML)

Oklahoma (-500) should be able to keep Oklahoma State (+375) RB Chuba Hubbard in check and take care of business; however, it’s bad betting business to risk five times the reward. Avoid the moneyline here.

New to sports betting? Every $10 wagered on an outright win for Oklahoma will return a profit of $2.00.

Against the Spread (ATS)

OKLAHOMA STATE (+12.5, -110) is worth taking with the points at home. Oklahoma (-12.5, -110) has been sloppy defensively, and this is a lot of points to be laying on the road in a rivalry game. Hubbard is an explosive player for the Cowboys, and he is one of a handful of skilled stars for OSU. Unfortunately, they are forced to make due without WR Tylan Wallace, who is done for the season.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 68.5 (-115) is a great play, to me, on paper. Sure, the upper 60’s seems like a lot, but the Sooners haven’t been able to stop anybody lately, allowing 24 or more points in four straight (all non-covers). That includes 41 against Iowa State in a narrow win Nov. 9, and 48 at Kansas State in a loss. Look for this one to go well over the number.

The 3 biggest storylines of the 114th Bedlam (Oklahoma-Oklahoma State)

Ahead of the 114th matchup in Bedlam series history, there are several surefire players, as well as several question marks. Here are the three biggest storylines in the Sooners and Cowboys matchup.

Ahead of the 114th matchup in Bedlam series history, there are several surefire players, as well as several question marks. Here are the three biggest storylines in the Sooners and Cowboys matchup.

HEISMAN HUBBARD

The question isn’t can the Sooners stop Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard, it’s can they minimize the damage. The sophomore from Canada averages 167 rushing yards per game, rushing for over 200 yards four times and less than 100 just once against McNeese State in the second game of the year. The Sooners have, and without making the College Football Playoffs, will not see another player like Hubbard. Their only hope is that Ronnie Perkins and Neville Gallimore can anchor a D-Line that will limit his production on Saturday.

MAN VERSUS THE MULLET

The Sooners have someone of their own with massive production this year. Jalen Hurts, you may have heard of him. Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy certainly has, citing “it’s a one-man show,”. Gundy is obviously going to try and do everything in his power to limit specifically Hurts production, but it remains to be seen if that’s even possible, as he averages 396 total yards per game this season. Tune in Saturday to see if Gundy can perform miracles.

MAKING DRU

With starter Spencer Sanders out due to thumb surgery, the Hawaii transfer Dru Brown is possibly the biggest question mark for both teams this weekend. He had a good outing versus West Virginia, completing 22 of his 29 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns. He didn’t try to force anything, which could be his downfall against the high-powered Sooners. If he can’t make some much-needed throw against Oklahoma, the Cowboys might be in trouble.

Oklahoma owns lopsided history with Oklahoma State

The intra-state rivalry is here. The Sooners and Cowboys face off in Boone Pickens Stadium for Bedlam on Saturday. Here is their lopsided history that dates back more than a century.

The in-state rivalry is here. The Sooners and Cowboys face off in Boone Pickens Stadium for Bedlam on Saturday. Here is their lopsided history that dates back more than a century.

As the Sooners famously love to bring up, they hold an 88-17-7 record over Oklahoma State.

From 1946 to 1964, Oklahoma dominated 19 straight games against the Cowboys, winning by an average of 27 points throughout the period. The Sooners era of dominance was ended in 1965 and 66’, when OSU won back-to-back games by just a point at 17-16 and 15-14.

Oklahoma State has won back-to-back games in the series five times, but has never won more than two in a row.

Oklahoma is currently on a four win streak. The last time Oklahoma State won was when former Sooner head coach Bob Stoops did the unthinkable, punting to now Kansas City Chiefs star Tyreek Hill twice, the second  leading to a game-winning 91-yard punt return.

The largest margin of victory in series history came in Oklahoma’s 75-0 win in 1904. The Pokes was in 1945 when they won 47-0.

The Sooners and Cowboys begin their 114th matchup at 7 p.m. in Stillwater Saturday.

A statistical look at the Sooners opponent, Oklahoma State

Oklahoma has seen some statistical feats this year with Jalen Hurts, but their in-state rival has had it’s fair share as well.

Oklahoma has seen some statistical feats this year with Jalen Hurts, but their in-state rival has had it’s fair share as well. Here’s a statistical look at the Sooners opponent, Oklahoma State.

HUBBARD HUBBARD

Oklahoma State’s running back Chuba Hubbard has put up some ludicrous numbers this season, and has even possibly earned himself a trip to New York. He has nearly 200 more rushing yards than Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor (1,685) at 1,832, and is second in touchdowns with 20. He’s had four 200-yard games, and has only once not rushed for over a hundred yards. The Sooners have yet to see a running back of his caliber this season.

THE TURNOVER BATTLE

With as much production as Sooners quarterback Jalen Hurts sees, turnovers are bound to happen. But the last three weeks have hurt Oklahoma as he’s averaged an interception and a fumble in the last three games. The Cowboys have forced 16 turnovers in 10 games, a decent stat to boast against the turnover-prone Hurts. The Sooners have forced some key turnovers themselves however, as Nik Bonitto, Parnell Motley and Brendan Radley-Hiles have all had game-clinching interceptions. Whoever wins the Bedlam turnover battle, could very well win the game.

DRU WHO?

Dru Brown made his first career start for the Cowboys last week in their matchup versus West Virginia. With Spencer Sanders out due to thumb surgery, the Hawaii transfer was thrusted into the spotlight. The Mountaineers have had a rocky season so far, winning just four games thus far. Brown managed the game well, throwing for 196 yards and two touchdowns, completing 22 of his 29 passes. The Sooners’ Speed D, however, will be a much tougher task for Brown. If he can dice up the Sooners secondary, he could effectively end Oklahoma’s playoff chances.

What Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy had to say about Oklahoma

Bedlam is on the horizon. Here is what Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy had to say about the Cowboys’ upcoming game against Oklahoma.

Bedlam is set up to be another weird and wacky game.

No. 7 Oklahoma (10-1, 7-1) will travel just an hour to take on No. 21 Oklahoma State (8-3, 5-3) in its annual in-state rivalry.

Both head coaches had their press conferences to preview Saturday’s game.

Here is what Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy had to say about the Cowboys’ upcoming game against Oklahoma.

ON THE CHALLENGE OF FACING JALEN HURTS

“You got to play five-on-five, six-on-six or seven-on-seven because of the willingness for them to run him and his willingness to run and he’s an extra guy. And sometimes against them, because they are triple option—you can watch the tape—the back comes here and he blocks, they fake to the other back, he goes up and block and (Hurts) runs the ball. That’s just triple option. In most cases, they are going to have equal numbers. So you have to be able to get off blocks and you got to be able to tackle. That’s what it comes down to. The more I watched it, I kept thinking, ‘There’s only one guy that ever touches the ball,’ and it’s him. He’s a one-man show.”

ON CEEDEE LAMB:

“He’s a good player. You can tell they missed him in the Baylor game. He’s an explosive player. Preseason, they threw it to him down the field. Once you got into the league play, where guys know each other, caught a lot of underneath routes, tweeners and a little bit of cross-country stuff. Good player.”

Oklahoma opens just under 2 touchdown favorites against Oklahoma State

Oklahoma has had a hard time covering the spread the last three weeks, including Iowa State and TCU coming back from down 21 to cover.

[jwplayer 27VNQsDh]

No. 7 Oklahoma (10-1, 7-1) has had a hard time covering the spread the last three weeks, including Iowa State and TCU coming back from down 21 to cover.

That, still, has not stopped oddsmakers from giving the Sooners respect.

Oklahoma was its lowest betting favorite two weeks ago against Baylor, but the Sooners are its third lowest betting favorite of the year this week against in-state rival and No. 21 ranked Oklahoma State (8-3, 5-3).

Lincoln Riley and the Sooners will travel an hour north on Interstate-35 to Stillwater, Oklahoma, and have opened up as 12.5-point favorites, according to BetMGM.

Odds via BetMGM. Access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. ET.

The Cowboys struggled during the middle of the season, but have since rattled off four-straight wins, including one on the road at Iowa State. It’s Bedlam, though, so the throw the record books out and expect the unexpected.
