Week 4 Big 12 Roundup: Oklahoma State leads the way

The Big 12 Conference had all 10 teams in action on Saturday. Oklahoma State stayed ahead of everyone as the lone undefeated team.

It was another wild weekend in the Big 12 Conference. The Texas Longhorns started the day by losing to Texas Christian at home. The fun in the conference didn’t stop there. As it sits right now, the two teams who needed strong showings are sitting closer to the bottom of the conference, setting up a wild Red River Shootout in the Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma loses its second straight game for the first time since 1998

Last year in Norman, the Iowa State Cyclones came within a point of the Sooners. It was a wild 42-41 win for Oklahoma as it marched toward the Big 12 championship and another College Football Playoff appearance. This time, the Cyclones were held off the Sooners 37-30.

In this contest, Spencer Rattler had a chance to lead a late rally. However, the game-tying pass attempt was picked off in the end zone with less than two minutes left. Using Breece Hall, the Cyclones ran out the clock. Brock Purdy was much better in this game than in the previous two weeks. Now Iowa State shares the lead in the Big 12 with a 2-0 conference record.

Oklahoma State steamrolls Kansas

The Kansas Jayhawks didn’t put up much of a fight against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Lawrence. The Cowboys, playing without Spencer Sanders, had everything working. Chuba Hubbard looked like the player many thought might make a run at the Heisman Trophy. He averaged 7.3 yards per carry. Tylan Wallace also had a monster game.

Kansas looked like, well, Kansas. It was held scoreless until the game was over. In the fourth quarter, it got on the board with a touchdown from Velton Gardner. The Les Miles experience isn’t looking so great as it starts Year 2. The Cowboys won 47-7.

Kansas State wins the battle of backup quarterbacks

When the game started, the big matchup was Skylar Thompson against against Alan Bowman of Texas Tech. Neither quarterback finished, as the backups were asked to win this game. Thompson and Bowman combined for a total of 17 passes.

Henry Colombi led Texas Tech back into this game after it was shut out in the first half. Tech even led late in the second half. However, Kansas State made the plays when it needed. Deuce Vaughn once again made a big play that helped seal the win. Kansas State joined Oklahoma State and Iowa State atop the Big 12 Conference standings.

West Virginia survives overtime to beat Baylor

It was quite the low scoring affair. They were tied at halftime and again at the end of regulation. West Virginia scored first in each half on 1-yard touchdown runs only to see the Bears tie it up. Josh Fleeks of Baylor caught a 34-yard pass for a touchdown with just 1:19 remaining to force the extra session.

Jarret Doege threw two touchdowns in the overtimes to help WVU. However, the interception in the second overtime by Charlie Brewer sealed the deal. All the Mountaineers had to do was score at that point. The loss put Baylor in a tie with West Virginia, Texas and Texas Christian for fourth in the conference.

Red River Shootout: Texas and Oklahoma fighting for their lives

The outcomes of the Texas Christian and Iowa State games set up a wild game in the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns and Sooners come in with a combined 1-3 record in the conference. Spencer Rattler has thrown interceptions on back-to-back weeks that essentially ended the game. Sam Ehlinger is coming off his worst performance through three games. Something has to give in Dallas.

Big 12 Roundup: trOUble in Norman, Sooners shocked at home

With all ten teams in play, we look around the league in the Big 12 roundup on a wild Saturday across the landscape.

Before the Texas Longhorns put their No. 8 ranking on the line in a thriller, the No. 3 ranked Oklahoma Sooners hosted the Kansas State Wildcats. In their openers, the Wildcast fell at home to Arkansas State while the Sooners rolled Missouri State. However, on Saturday’s early kickoff the fortunes turned.

Kansas State 38, Oklahoma 35

It was the conference opener at home for the Oklahoma Sooners. They came in as heavy favorites and many expected them to run over a depleted Kansas State team that was missing eight players. Early on it looked like Spencer Rattler would pick right up where he left off against Missouri State. After an early interception from Rattler, the Sooners scored touchdowns on back to back drives. It wasn’t until a second pick that the Wildcats would score their lone touchdown of the first half.

With 2:46 left in the third quarter, the Sooners found themselves up 35-14 and looking to wrap up another Big 12 Conference win. Then the floodgates opened for Kansas State. The Wildcats defense would allow another score, they forced two turnovers and three punts on the final five drives of the game. Meanwhile Kansas State would score on their next four drives to take the lead after 24 unanswered points to win the game. Rattler threw his third pick of the game as he tried to rally his team.

The talented redshirt freshman looked just like that, a freshman. He will get a lot better and this was a coachable moment for Lincoln Riley. The Wildcats upset the Sooners for the second-straight season.

Iowa State 37, Texas Christian 34

The next game to kick off before Texas took the field were the Iowa State Cyclones and Texas Christian Horned Frogs. This was the first time TCU has played this season after postponing their opening game. Iowa State was looking to avenge a dreadful loss to the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns in Ames.

In this game Brock Purdy looked better than he did in the opener. He only had five incompletions and threw for one touchdown. It was more about the running game for the Cyclones with Bryce Hall. It just took a quarter to get everything rolling. Despite the two teams combined for 71 points in this game, neither team could get the upper hand early with a scoreless first quarter.

On first and 15 from their own 25-yard line, Hall broke off a 75-yard run to get the scoring started in this game. Hall finished with 153 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Newly named starter Matthew Downing responded with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Johnson. Downing just wouldn’t finish this game as the quarterback. After a sack-fumble, the Cyclones would build a 16-7 lead going into the break.

Max Duggan would take over in the second half and led the team to 27 second half points. The offense finally got rolling to close in on the Cyclones. Down two late in the fourth, Duggan had a pass go right off his receivers hands and it was intercepted. Hall would take care of the rest and give Iowa State a 37-28 lead. They would hold on to win the game.

Oklahoma State 27, West Virginia 13

Much like the Cyclones and Horned Frogs, this game started out with a scoreless first quarter. The Oklahoma State Cowboys would be without starting quarterback Spencer Sanders in this one as freshman Shane Illingsworth would get the nod. He threw for just 139 yards and one interception in this one. It was all about the running backs for OSU.

The standout receiver Tylan Wallace would catch six passes for 78 yards but was held out of the endzone in this one. The second quarter lead would be enough for Oklahoma State as West Virginia and Jarret Doege just couldn’t build any steam.

As the second quarter opened, the Cowboys found the endzone on a LD Brown 66-yard scamper to the endzone. He has become a homerun threat for the offense. The following drive, Oklahoma State built a 14-point lead with a scoop and score on a fumble.

After finding themselves down 17-0, Doege found Winston Wright Jr for a 70-yard touchdown. They would go into the half down 20-7. The Mountaineers could only must six second half points on two field goals as they fell to OSU. Chuba Hubbard got the ball rolling late as the cracked the 100-yard mark on 22 carries and a touchdown.

Baylor 47, Kansas 14

The Baylor Bears finally got onto the field for their first game of the 2020 campaign against the Kansas Jayhawks. On the first drive of the game, Kansas would take a 7-0 lead on a 21-yard run from Pooka Williams. After a Bears punt and a failed fourth and one run by Kansas, Baylor would get going on offense. A Travis Ebner run would tie the game up. He wouldn’t be done with his showcase on this day.

Baylor would end up taking a 17-7 lead into the break after Charlie Brewer found Ebner on an 18-yard pass. Ebner would score again on the opening kickoff of the second half to extend their lead to 17 points. He would run it 100 yards as the special teams got their first score on the board. Ebner would add an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown after a safety. Baylor would be up 40-7 at that point.

All in all Travis Ebner had quite the day with four total touchdowns and 272 all-purpose yards in the game. Both touchdowns for Kansas came on runs from Pooka Williams, who finished with 76 yards rushing.

Big 12 Football: One fan bet the over and will lose big in Oklahoma State game

One fan bet the over in the Oklahoma State and Tulsa game and is set to lose $40,000 in the game.

One of the aspects of college football and sports in general is the betting. So many betting sites allow you to bet on a multitude of prop bets. You can bet on who will score the first touchdown of the season. Not only small prop bets such as scoring, awards, where your favorite team will finish or even the College Football Playoff.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Tulsa Golden Hurricanes were set to take the field on Saturday morning. The Cowboys were heavy favorites to win this game. According to BetMGM , Oklahoma State was favored by 23.5 points at the time of kickoff. The over/under was set at 66.5 points. Most of which was expected to come from the OSU Cowboys. However, the game didn’t go their way early on.

So you could imagine the betting coming the Cowboys way, then there was this bet. Barstool Sports posted a betting wager where someone dropped $40,000 to win over $76,000. Not the best move based on how the game is going. Closing in on the fourth quarter at time of publishing, the Cowboys trail 7-3.

Big 12 Football: Oklahoma State-Tulsa game delayed due to COVID-19

The Big 12 Conference has its second game that has been impacted by COVID-19. The OSU-Tulsa game has now been moved back a week.

On the heels of the Southern Methodist-Texas Christian football game being postponed due to COVID-19, another game is being impacted. It doesn’t come as much of a shock considering Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby’s recent comments about the postponement.

“I’m not even sure how to answer that question,” Bowlsby said when asked if he was confident in playing a full season. “I will tell you this: I don’t think the TCU/SMU game will be the last game we will not be able to play. I have said to some of you, as well as to others, that I expect there will be disruptions and we’ve already had one. – according to Riley Gates on 247Sports

That quote came just hours ahead of another Big 12 game being disrupted. The Oklahoma State and Tulsa game will also be postponed. This according to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, who stated it was being pushed back one week due to Tulsa’s COVID issues.

This should serve as a reminder that despite the fact that college football has returned, we are far from being out of the woods just yet. While the Texas Longhorns have been the “gold standard” for protecting their athletes, according to quarterback Sam Ehlinger, it can strike at any time. So keep monitoring social distancing and wear your masks. This is the only way that we can watch the Texas Longhorns play the game we love in 2020.

Texas Football: Holding steady in new USA TODAY Sports Top 76 rankings

In the latest top 76 rankings from Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports, the Longhorns are holding steady inside the top ten.

With college football season underway, rankings are a hot topic. Mostly among fans who want to brag about their team. Or use them to belittle your rivals. Either way they are a fun talking point, at least for the teams that will actually be playing in 2020. In the words of Alex Trebek, “let’s just take a look at the board.”

USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg was back on Tuesday with his Top 76 ranks. With 76 being the number of teams playing this season in the Bowl Subdivision (FBS) or Division I. One of the bigger jumps in this weeks rankings have the Texas A&M Aggies jumping up seven spots to leapfrog Texas into the top seven teams. Proving once again that they are without a doubt one of the most overrated teams in college football.

Big 12 Rankings

Team Ranking Change
Oklahoma 4 0
Texas 8 0
Oklahoma State 13 -1
Texas Christian 22 -1
Iowa State 24 -1
Kansas State 31 -1
West Virginia 34 +1
Texas Tech 42 0
Baylor 49 +1
Kansas 68 -1

Three members of the Big 12 Conference didn’t move at all with Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech. The Longhorns upcoming opponent the UTEP Miners moved up one spot to 75 after beating SFA. They are no longer ranked the worst FBS team currently playing football. Another school in the state, Texas-San Antonio assumes that mantle.

Following the upcoming weekend of games in the ACC and Big 12 Conferences, the top 76 should be mightily different this time next week.

Cut Seahawk DB Kemah Siverand apologizes for ill-advised ‘sneak”

Kemah Siverand apologized for trying to sneak a woman into his room at Seahawks camp.

It took a while but former Seattle Seahawks DB Kemah Siverand made the only play he could: Apologize.

The undrafted free agent from Oklahoma State who was cut Aug, 11 after trying to sneak a woman into his room — against COVID-19 restrictions — took to Twitter and said, “I made a mistake, let people down, and am truly sorry.”

“After taking time to reflect and really consider the seriousness of my actions, I have tried to find the appropriate words to apologize to all of those affected by my poor decision and immaturity,” Siverand’s apology read. “I’ve privately apologized to Coach [Pete] Carroll, [general manager] John Schneider, and the Seahawks organization. I violated team rules, which would have been unacceptable in normal times, but absolutely inexcusable now during a pandemic. I understand my lapse in judgement put my teammates and the organization at risk, thankfully no one else was affected by my actions.”

The full Tweet apology:

Siverand compounded his poor decision-making by having the woman dress in Seahawks garb. Security video caught him.

You won’t believe why the Seattle Seahawks cut CB Kemah Siverand

The Seahawks cut undrafted free agent CB Kemah Siverand for trying to sneak a woman into his hotel room, per a report.

There are all sorts of stories out of training camp. However, the Seattle Seahawks added a unique one by cutting CB Kemah Siverand this week.

Siverand, an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State made a poor decision. And not on the field.

He was caught on video trying to sneak a woman into his hotel room, per Tom Pelissero of The NFL Network.

Simply stunning that a player in these COVID-19 times would risk their chance at an NFL career my making the wrong, um, call.

Give him credit for ingenuity and being foolhardy.
