Saints get a new franchise quarterback in four-round 2020 mock draft

The New Orleans Saints improved by picking QB Jalen Hurts, WR Brandon Aiyuk, and LB Chazz Surratt in the latest 2020 NFL mock draft.

The 2020 NFL Draft is months away, but it’s never too soon to speculate about who the New Orleans Saints could end up picking. Especially with the college football season hurtling towards bowl game season. We aren’t going for accuracy here; think of this exercise as a preview for this weekend’s games

We used The Draft Network’s Mock Draft Machine to accurately simulate a selections before and after each of the Saints’ picks.

Round 1, Pick 30: QB Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma

Watch him next vs. TCU Saturday, Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Right now, Hurts is seen as a fringe first-round quarterback prospect, but his stock should rise once the pre-draft process kicks off in the spring just like it has for other quarterbacks. And expect Saints coach Sean Payton to be intrigued by Hurts’ abilities. Payton has been a fan of similar prospects like Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Carson Wentz and Andrew Luck, all of whom featured rare arm strength along with the ability to make plays with their legs.

Hurts has made huge strides under Sooners coach Lincoln Riley after transferring from Alabama, leading Oklahoma in both passing yards (3,039) and rushing yards (983) while scoring a combined 43 touchdowns in 10 games (28 as a passer, 15 as a runner). He’s protected the ball well by throwing just five interceptions and fumbling six times.

With Drew Brees, Teddy Bridgewater, and Taysom Hill each due to receive new contracts after this season, the Saints are probably going to need a new face at quarterback. It’s tough to see Bridgewater remaining in New Orleans after going undefeated in his five-game stint as the starter and with so many quarterback-needy teams around the league. Whether Hurts, who will be a 21-year-old rookie, sits behind Brees for a year or competes with Hill to start, he’s the ideal prospect to bring under Payton’s tutelage.

Final game grades, report card for Oklahoma-Baylor

The game is never as good or as bad as it looks initially. Here are the final game grades, report card after rewatching Oklahoma and Baylor.

As Lincoln Riley says, “The game is never as good as you thought, and it’s not going to be bad.”

On first glance, I really could not figure out how to explain this game. The Oklahoma offense and Jalen Hurts went from looking like a defeated group to one of the best in college football. The defense went back to its first eight week self.

After every game, Sooners Wire’s Kegan Reneau will rewatch and provide his final thoughts before moving on to the next one.

Here are the grades for the unit and the grades for individuals who ended up on the stat sheet or were noticeable for Oklahoma. These grades reflect how the Sooners played on that game indicative of the perception Reneau expects them to play.

QUARTERBACK — B

Jalen Hurts — B

So, let’s account for two halves of football.

You put a truth serum in anyone watching that game, the thought of making a change at quarterback didn’t sound like a bad one for Oklahoma to make.

Then, Jalen Hurts became the best player in college football in the second half.

He got a C- for the first half and an A in the second half. Hurts was so, so good coming out of the locker room. Precise and accurate pre-snap reads led to quick throws against man and match quarters coverage.

If this is the turning point for the Jalen Hurts’ Era at Oklahoma, it comes right at the perfect time.

RUNNING BACK —  B+

Kennedy Brooks — B+
Rhamondre Stevenson — B

Brooks and Stevenson missed a couple of holes and cut backs, but overall, this was quality work when Oklahoma needed it the most.

H-BACK — B

Jeremiah Hall — B
Brayden Willis — B

This position remains as steady as it comes. Willis’ touchdown and Hall’s blocking was the right blend at the H-back position.

WIDE RECEIVER — B+

Charleston Rambo — B
Nick Basquine — B-
A.D. Miller — B+
Theo Wease — A
Jadon Haselwood — N/A

The beginning of the Theo Wease, Jadon Haselwood and Trejan Bridges Era is near, but how about the contribution by A.D. Miller? One of the crazier offseason stories ended up playing out in Oklahoma’s favor.

TIGHT END — A+

Lee Morris — A+
Austin Stogner — A+

The Lee Morris game everyone will be talking about forever. Austin Stogner’s two touchdown catches provides just another look at the future.

OFFENSIVE LINE — C+

Stopping James Lynch was a major problem up front, and it was enough to really cause issues for Oklahoma’s offense and the offensive line. R.J. Proctor was a better fit than Erik Swenson. I’d expect this to continue.

OFFENSE — 83

Jalen Hurts second half saved this grade from a low C to a mid-B. The offense was outright dominant, and for the first time all year, didn’t rely on CeeDee Lamb to make it look statistically historic. Take away the turnovers by Hurts, how many yards does Oklahoma put up on one of the best defenses in college football?

Jalen Hurts earns final Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week award

After leading Oklahoma to a 25-point comeback win over Baylor, Jalen Hurts has earned the last Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week Award of the year.

Hurts’ first half, though, didn’t look like an award-winning performance. He had two turnovers, one passing touchdown and the offense had accumulated just 10 points in the entire half.

Hurts’ sprung to life in the second, scoring four touchdowns and erasing a 28-3 Baylor lead to win 34-31. He completed 30 of his 42 total passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns. Hurts also ran the ball 27 times for 114 yards.

The Oklahoma signal-caller leads the nation in points responsible for with 260, and is second in the nation in individual offense per game at 402.2 yards, only behind Washington State’s Anthony Gordon who averages 434.8.

Oddly enough, after possibly earning himself a trip to New York, this is Hurts’ first Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week award of the season. LSU’s Joe Burrow finished with three, and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa finished with two.

After needing a historic comeback to beat Baylor, Oklahoma was either staying put or barely moving up in this week’s College Football Playoff Rankings.

The College Football Playoff committee made that decision with the release of the Nov. 19 Rankings on Tuesday night, with the Sooners climbing just one spot to No. 9.

Lincoln Riley, Jalen Hurts and the 2019 Oklahoma football team found themselves in a 28-3 hole early in the second-quarter against now No. 14 Baylor before trailing the Bears 31-10 at half. The Sooners scored 24 unanswered in the second half, shutting out Baylor and pulled out a 34-31 win.

Here is how the rest of the top-10 of the College Football Playoff Rankings rounded out:

  1. LSU
  2. Ohio State
  3. Clemson
  4. Georgia
  5. Alabama
  6. Oregon
  7. Utah
  8. Penn State
  9. Oklahoma
  10. Minnesota

Oklahoma State, Oklahoma’s opponent on Nov. 30, jumped one spot to No. 21. The Sooners also gained another top-25 win as Iowa State moved into the top-25 at No. 22.

Oklahoma comeback win over Baylor was most watched television event on Saturday

Oklahoma’s 34-31 comeback win over Baylor attracted millions. It was the most-watched televised event on Saturday.

[jwplayer 3H0PKJUb-er0jUifI]

On Saturday, Oklahoma did the impossible, coming back from down 25 to take a wild win in Waco.

After going down 28-3 in the second quarter, the Sooners didn’t allow a point in the second quarter, storming back into the game with 24 straight second-half points to win 34-31.

Oklahoma’s wild win attracted 6.785 million viewers, and was ABC’s most-watched Big 12 game wince 2013, when the Sooners played Oklahoma State.

When they completed the comeback, the viewers peaked at around 8.5 million. It was the most-watched televised event on Saturday.

The Sooners and the Bears could very well see each other again in December in the Big 12 Championship, and could see even better numbers in Dallas.

The nation will most likely not be as glued to their television this Saturday, as the Sooners take on 5-5 TCU in their final home game of the season.

Oklahoma and the Horned Frogs kickoff at 7 p.m. CT on FOX.

Oklahoma offensive line a Joe Moore Award semifinalist

After losing four offensive linemen to the NFL last year, Oklahoma has been named one of the final ten candidates for the Joe Moore Award.

After losing four offensive linemen to the NFL draft last year, Oklahoma’s offensive line unit, coached by Bill Bedenbaugh, has been named one of the final ten candidates for the Joe Moore Award.

Among the ten teams nominated for the best offensive line unit in the country are Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Ohio State, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin and the Sooners.

“There was healthy debate this year which required a thorough reexamination of game tape,” said Cole Cubelic, Chairman of the Joe Moore Award Voting Committee.  “This award matters to the O-line community and the voting committee doesn’t take that responsibility lightly.”

Oklahoma’s current offensive line unit helps the team average a league-high 581.1 yards per game, as well as 8.75 yards per play. The next closest is LSU at 7.64. Center Creed Humphrey is the only returning starter from last season, as Tyrese Robinson, Adrian Ealy, R.J. Proctor, Marquis Hayes and Erik Swenson have all gotten valuable minutes in this year.

“As the season winds down, performances in the ‘gotta have it’ moments over the next couple of weeks should reveal all we need to know about which of these units is the Most Outstanding Offensive Line Unit in college football.” Said Aaron Taylor, co-founder of the Joe Moore Award.

The Sooners “gotta have it” moment could have very well been their 25-point comeback win over Baylor, when the offensive unit gained 525 yards, a majority of which came in the second half.

The finalists for the award with be announced on December 10, and the winner will be made public with a visit to the winning campus’s university.

TCU has earned a few wins over Oklahoma, but not recently

After the largest comeback in Oklahoma football history, the Sooner’s welcome in TCU. Here’s a look back at their series history.

After the largest comeback in Oklahoma football history, the Sooners’ matchup with TCU is fast approaching.

Oklahoma currently holds a 14-5 record over the Horned Frogs.

TCU won two of the first three matchups with Oklahoma, winning 13-7 in 1945 and 20-7 in 1947, its largest win in the series. The Sooners rattled off three straight wins, two of which were in Fort Worth.

Oklahoma won in 1948 and 1954, and the teams didn’t meet again until 1993, when the Sooners won by their largest deficit in series history at 35-3.

In 2014, TCU earned their last win over Oklahoma 37-33. Since then, the Sooners have won five-straight matchups, their longest streak versus the Horned Frogs. TCU has never won two games in a row in the series.

The last game at Gaylord Stadium will be played at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, as the Sooners look for their sixth-straight win over TCU.

A statistical look at Oklahoma’s opponent (TCU)

Last week, Oklahoma had a historic win over Baylor. This week, a matchup with TCU. Here’s a statistical look at the Horned Frogs.

Last week, Oklahoma had a historic come-from-behind win over Baylor. This week, a matchup with 5-5 TCU.

But this game is just as important for their College Football Playoff hopes as the last. Here’s a statistical look at Gary Patterson’s Horned Frogs.

Keeping it close

The Horned Frogs are the kings of keeping it close. Excluding their 49-24 loss to Iowa State in early October, the rest of their losses have been within one score at an average of 5.75 points. Their games with SMU, Kansas State, Baylor and Oklahoma State have all come down to the wire. Oklahoma has had a history of letting teams hang around this season, and they’ll need to get up big early, or they might have their third shootout in a row on their hands.

Horned Frog Defense

With a 34-point performance on the Baylor defense, TCU has officially been made the top defense in the Big 12. Trevon Moehrig and Vernon Scott are two legit safeties, who are apart of a unit that allows just 209 passing yards per game. Jalen Hurts, who averages 304 passing yard per game, will need to fix last week’s mistakes to succeed against TCU.

Up-and-down offense

TCU’s offense has split their rushing and passing right down the middle. They average 223 passing yards and 215 rushing yards per game. Last week, Oklahoma finally showed some defensive adjustments, shutting down the Bears offense. This week, they’ll be facing an extremely balanced offense, that has struggled at times. This should be a tune-up game for the Sooners defense, but they can’t have another repeat of last week’s first half. TCU has also lost nine fumbles in 10 games this year, and quarterback Max Duggan nearly has a 2-1 touchdown to interception ration. It should be a perfect week to force some coveted turnovers for Alex Grinch.

Oklahoma opens over 2 touchdown favorites against TCU

Despite the last three games, No. 7 Oklahoma (9-1, 6-1 Big 12) has opened back up as a major betting favorite according to BetMGM

Despite the last three games, No. 7 Oklahoma (9-1, 6-1 Big 12) has opened back up as a major betting favorite.

The Sooners were favorited by more than 20 when they lost to Kansas State on the road. They were on the path to covering a two touchdown spread against Iowa State before nearly blowing a 21-point lead, then needed a historic comeback to beat Baylor 34-31 as 10.5-point favorites.

Oklahoma plays host to TCU on Saturday, and opens up as a 17.5-point favorite according to BetMGM.

The Horned Frogs are having an up-and-down season, heading into Saturday’s game off of a 33-31 win over Texas Tech. They almost handed Baylor its first loss two weeks ago in an overtime loss, lost on the road at Oklahoma State, but beat Texas at home.

WATCH Former Oklahoma tackle Bobby Evans celebrate, break out Los Angeles Rams after big win

Former Oklahoma offensive lineman Bobby Evans had himself a day on Sunday for the Rams, and finished it with breaking out the Los Angeles Rams.

Former Oklahoma offensive lineman Bobby Evans had himself a day on Sunday for the Rams, and earned himself the honor of breaking out the team.

Evans was a three-year starter at Oklahoma, and was a vital part of a unit that won the 2018 Joe Moore award, the award for the best offensive line in the country.

Los Angeles drafted Evans in the third round of the last draft, 97th overall.

In his first ever start at right tackle, due to starter Rob Havenstein suffering a knee injury, Evans had the tall task of fending off NFL star Khalil Mack.

Evans did a phenomenal job, not allowing Mack to get to the quarterback. Along with his pass blocking, running back Todd Gurley ran for 97 yards and a touchdown behind the line in the 17-7 win over the Bears.

There is currently no timetable for Havenstein’s return from a knee injury, so for now the job looks to be Evans to lose.
