Oklahoma is one win away from the championship series after a wire-to-wire 6-2 victory over Notre Dame

The Oklahoma Sooners inch one win closer to the championship series after defeating Notre Dame by a score of 6-2 on Sunday evening.

Oklahoma is one win away from a spot in the championship series of the College World Series. Sunday night they defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sunday evening in Omaha by a score of 6-2.

The win takes the Sooners to 2-0 in pool play and sends Notre Dame to play an elimination game against the Sooners’ former Big 12 foes Texas A&M.

Oklahoma was paced by an excellent pitching performance from Cade Horton who threw six innings of two-run ball while striking out 11, walking one, and giving up five hits.

Offensively, star shortstop [autotag]Peyton Graham[/autotag] continued his incredible season with a four-hit night that included a walk and a stolen base. [autotag]Tanner Tredaway[/autotag] chipped in with two massive RBIs to pair with three hits himself.

For the Sooners, it wasn’t the home runs that got the job done offensively as Notre Dame, team that ended the regular season with the nation’s seventh-best ERA, kept Oklahoma in the ballpark. Timely base hits, walks, and aggressive base running came together for some excellent small ball for the Sooners.

Oklahoma jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third after struggling the first two innings, stranding four men on base.

A Peyton Graham single and steal was followed by a Tredaway base hit to score Graham from second. Treadway then scored from second on a Wallace Clark single.

Meanwhile, Cade Horton dominated the Notre Dame lineup using a deadly combination of a slider, fastball, and a curveball to keep Notre Dame off balance all evening.

The bottom of the fifth saw Oklahoma hit the gas and pull away for good. A few singles got the Sooners on first and third with one out before what was essentially a safety squeeze turned into two runs as the Notre Dame pitcher fielding the bunt made an errant throw allowing the runner on first to score as well giving Oklahoma a 4-0 lead. Jackson Nicklaus then added an RBI single that extended their lead to 5-0.

Notre Dame would chip into the Oklahoma lead with a two-run home run in the top of the 6th off the bat of Notre Dame’s David LaManna. Horton, who was at 90-plus pitches would finish the inning before giving way to an Oklahoma bullpen that allowed only a walk and to hits to seal the game for the Sooners. Jaret Godman and super senior Trevin Michael pitched three scoreless innings, pushing Oklahoma one win away from the College World Series championship.

The Sooners will be facing the winner of the Notre Dame and Texas A&M elimination game knowing that whoever their opponent is will have to beat them twice to move past them.

Oklahoma’s next game will be Wednesday at 12 p.m. CT.

Four College World Series matchups we’d love to see

There are plenty of intriguing matchups the Texas Longhorns could draw in Omaha.

With three traditional rivals remaining in the tournament, there are plenty of intriguing matchups the Texas Longhorns could draw in Omaha.

Texas’ first opponent is Notre Dame, one of the premier blue blood rivals for the Longhorns in football. With a win, Texas would face the winner of Texas A&M and Oklahoma. A loss would pair the Longhorns with the loser of that game.

On the other side of the bracket, Arkansas and Stanford face off. The two programs are among the best in college baseball in recent years.

The final matchup features Ole Miss and Auburn, two SEC West foes. Ole Miss won two out of three on the road against Auburn earlier this year.

Here are four matchups Texas fans won’t have any trouble getting excited about in this College World Series.

Sooners fall to Hokies in game 2 14-8, will play deciding game 3 tomorrow

Oklahoma pitching gave up five home runs in a 14-8 loss. The Sooners and Hokies will now play a deciding game three for a berth to the College World Series

After shocking the No. 4 team in the nation in game one, the Sooners learned just how good the Virginia Tech Hokies are in Saturday’s 14-8 loss. The Sooners and Hokies will play a game three tomorrow at noon to decide who will move on to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Hokies shelled Oklahoma pitching all game long.

David Sandlin had issues with his command and was tagged with five earned runs and gave up three home runs to Virginia Tech’s lineup. After Sandlin was pulled, Oklahoma used six more pitchers. Only one of them, Javier Ramos, threw more than one inning.

Errors again plagued the Sooners. Tech scored three unearned runs while OU committed three errors in the field. The Hokies are good enough of a team on their own. If the Sooners want to punch their ticket to Omaha, they can’t give these teams any help like they did today.

After his heroics in game one, Kendall Pettis had a nice day, going one for three with a walk and yet another RBI in this Super Regional.

The Sooners threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases and bringing in three runs, but ultimately, Virginia Tech’s lead was just too wide to overcome.

To finish off this upset, the starting pitching needs to be better than what David Sandlin showed today. Other than Trevin Michael, who has been phenomenal in this tournament, the bullpen has struggled. Presumably Cade Horton will get the start for Oklahoma and the Sooners  will need him to go longer than the 3.2 innings Sandlin did today.

Sooners one win away from Omaha after 5-4 win against Virginia Tech

Kendall Pettis had a big day to help the Sooners win game one of Super Regionals against no.4 Virginia Tech.

With the move to a stronger conference seemingly moving closer and closer, the Oklahoma Sooners are but one win away from the College World Series after beating Virginia Tech 5-4 in game one of the Super Regionals.

The Sooners jumped out to an early lead in the first inning on a Blake Robertson RBI single to bring in John Spikerman. In the second inning, Kendall Pettis and Spikerman brought in a run each to give the Sooners an early 3-0 lead.

Pettis hit another RBI single in the sixth inning to bring in what would end up being the game winning run.

Jake Bennett started on the mound, and held the No. 4 Hokies scoreless through five innings. While the Hokies did score four runs off of Bennett, three of them were unearned. Bennett struck out eight through seven innings. Trevin Michael worked two scoreless innings for the save.

Michael was untouchable, striking out four through two innings. The Hokies didn’t get a single baserunner against Michael.

OU hasn’t made it to Omaha since 2010. A win tomorrow will secure the program’s first College World Series birth in over a decade and perhaps continue a very magical championship run.

The Sooners and Hokies will play game two tomorrow at 11 a.m. on ESPNU.

Meanwhile, the Texas Longhorns are one game away from elimination after losing game one of their Super Regional against East Carolina.

Sooners beat Gators 5-4 to move on to Super Regionals, will face Virginia Tech

After a nearly six-hour-long weather delay, Oklahoma exploded for a four-run eighth inning to beat the Florida Gators and move on to Super Regionals

It took much longer than expected, but the Oklahoma Sooners once again defeated the Florida Gators 5-4 to move on to the NCAA Super Regionals. The game was delayed for more than five hours, but the Sooners still managed to get the job done to defeat their regional hosts.

Going into the the fifth inning, the Sooners trailed the Gators 1-0 when Kendall Pettis stepped up to the plate. Pettis tied the game on one swing of the bat with a home run that just got over the left field wall.

The Sooners scored again about six hours later on a Peyton Graham two-run homer that would tie the game at three in the eighth inning.

Graham’s homer ended up being the spark that led to a four-run eighth that helped OU get the win. The Gators did some damage in the ninth on a solo home run, but the Sooners held on to earn a date with No. 4 Virginia Tech at Super Regionals.

Super Regionals will be a best of three. If the Sooners can win two against the Hokies, they will move on to Omaha for the College World Series.

Elsewhere, the Texas Longhorns also won their regional and will face No. 8 East Carolina in their Super Regional. Texas Tech and TCU were both eliminated in their respective regionals.

With the move to the SEC in the not so distant future, this is a huge win for an OU Baseball program looking to establish itself among the big dogs of college baseball.

OU Baseball falls short of Big 12 title, loses season finale to Texas Tech

OU Baseball’s regular season came to a close with a loss against No. 5 Texas Tech, will play West Virginia in Big 12 Tournament

The regular season Big 12 title just wasn’t meant to be it seems. The Sooners fell in their regular-season finale to the No. 5 Texas Tech Red Raiders 10-2.

With the loss, TCU captures sole possession of the Big 12 regular-season title, with Texas Tech and OU finishing one game behind the Horned Frogs.

Oklahoma’s only runs of the day came from a pair of RBI singles from Tanner Tredaway and Jimmy Crooks. Things were looking good in the top of the first as Oklahoma struck first. Perhaps the Sooners would end up pulling off the improbable and finish off the sweep in enemy territory.

Then the Red Raiders came to bat.

Texas Tech jumped all over OU starting pitcher Cade Horton early. Horton walked the lead off batter and hit the next one to give Tech two early base runners.

Another walk, two RBI singles and an RBI double later, the Red Raiders had a 5-2 lead after the first inning.

The Sooners just couldn’t string any hits together after their strong first inning. After that first inning, OU didn’t get more than one hit in a frame for the rest of the game. The closest OU came to putting more runs on the board was when they loaded the bases in the seventh with a single and a pair of walks.

Peyton Graham and Blake Robertson both struck out with the bases loaded, leaving all three runners stranded.

While it was a disappointing way for the regular season to end, the Sooners head into the postseason on a quite a run. The Sooners won five straight Big 12 series to close the season, including taking two of three from the No. 5 ranked Red Raiders.

OU’s late surge in Big 12 play was good enough to earn the No. 3 seed in the Big 12 Tournament and will face West Virginia in their first game of the double-elimination bracket.

Oklahoma took two of three from the Mountaineers just a week ago, outscoring West Virginia 40-17 in the three-game set.

The Big 12 tournament will be streamed on ESPN+ and played at Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers.

OU one win away from Big 12 title after win over Texas Tech

OU Baseball is one win away from a share of the Big 12 title after winning 9-6 in game two of their series vs. Texas Tech

The Sooners went into Lubbock needing the best-case scenario for any hope of a regular-season Big 12 title after losing 18-0 to Wichita State. So far, that’s exactly what they’ve gotten, winning the first two games in a very crucial final series against the No. 6 Texas Tech Red Raiders.

After Thursday’s 9-6 victory, should the Sooners complete the sweep, they will be the co-champions of the regular season with TCU. The Sooners have now won five straight series in Big 12 play.

David Sandlin got the start for the Sooners tonight and pitched a serviceable five innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. The Red Raiders put up two runs against Sandlin, one in the second and one in the third. Sandlin’s efforts earned him his sixth win of the season, moving his record to 6-3. Trevin Micheal came in for the bottom of the eighth and finished off Texas Tech to get his eighth save of the season.

Whatever the issue was with the bats in Wichita clearly didn’t follow the Sooners into Lubbock. OU put up another nine runs tonight after scoring 13 in game one of the series. Four different Sooners picked up multiple base hits.

There is now one final game in this regular season and it means everything for this program. Winning even a share of the Big 12 title would be massive for a program trying to assert itself before it moves to the grown up table that is the SEC.

The game is tomorrow at 2 P.M. on ESPN+.
