What Ohio State is saying about Michigan before their matchup

Michigan football takes on Ohio State this week in their annual rivalry game. What did OSU head coach Ryan Day say about the Wolverines?

[jwplayer t9O6cACQ-XNcErKyb]

Michigan’s biggest game of the year is finally upon us, Ohio State. The Wolverines come into this game with nothing to lose as their Big Ten title hopes are gone and the playoff chances slim, while the Buckeyes undefeated season and playoff hopes are on this game. Michigan is going to want to be the only team to give the Buckeyes a loss this year, and if it can help them knock them out of the playoff race as well, that’s just the frosting on the cake.

Before the game happens though, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and his players spoke to the media this week. Day started by talking about Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown and his defense, then later transitioned to coaching with him at Boston College years ago.

“He actually coached against me when I played, then coached my brother at UMass, then we coached together at Boston College, now get an opportunity to coach against each other in a huge rivalry game, which makes it hard,” Day said.” Nothing but respect obviously for his background and what he’s done defensively over the years. One of the best guys in the business.”

Day then spoke about how dominant the rivalry has been for the Buckeyes since the early 2000s and how prepared the Buckeye teams have been for years.

“Again, if you’re working on it all year, then you’re prepared, whether you’ve worked on it the spring, the pre-season, certain periods that you set aside just to work on the team up north,” Day said. ” You talk to guys all the time about what it means, so they understand coming into the game what to expect. It’s always on the schedule that way. We have the countdown in the building. I think everyone understands the importance of it, that’s the first thing.”

“When you’re talking about the game itself, it goes back to the fundamentals: taking care of the football, executing the game plan, giving them a good plan they can execute,” Day said. “Being on the road is a little different than being at home. We have to handle that, being loud, the crowd noise. We’ll handle that today, make sure we pipe in the crowd noise during practice, show composure there. It’s going to come down to winning the one-on-one battles in the end.”

Day brought up defensive end Chase Young and what Michigan might do to try and stop him.

“They’re sound, they do a good job. I think at the end of the day it comes down to players,” Day said. “I don’t think they’re going to do anything that we probably haven’t seen. Maybe they will. But I think at the end of the day it’s going to come down to execution and guys winning their one-on-one battles.”

Day than later transitioned to talking about Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson and why he’s playing his best football of the season right now.

“I don’t really know,” Day said. “I’m not there, so I don’t know the dynamics of what’s going on. It’s hard to tell when you don’t know people. I do see him being more confident. I see a group that feels like they’ve found an identity. They got really good receivers, by the way. Those receivers are talented. Offensive line is giving them time. I don’t know exactly what made them all click, but it seems like it’s going well right now for them.”

The players would speak later and linebacker Tuf Borland would speak about how Michigan lines up scheme-wise and the challenge they face this week.

“Schematically, big bodies, multiple tight ends packages,” Borland said. “They have the ability to run the ball right at you but then they also have playmakers along the perimeter, a quarterback. Just multiple ways they can attack the defense.”

Linebacker Pete Werner spoke about what he learned immediately about the rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State.

“Everything is different,” Werner said. “The big thing that strikes me is the preparation. You have to prepare harder than that team, you have to work harder than that team. That all starts in practice. Preparation, there are just so many things to take into account to win this game. We’ve beaten them with preparation in the past, and that’s what showed in the outcome of the game.”

Werner added in some comments about co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison and linebackers coach Al Washington, both coaching at Michigan last year, how impactful they’ve been, and how much this game means to them.

“Oh yeah,” Werner said. “I can already tell. This is the game they’ve had checked on their calendar since the time they’ve been here. They have something to prove. I’ve learned so much from them. Some of the best coaches I’ve ever been around. I’ve become so much of a better player because of them too. This game is going to mean a lot. We’re going to prepare harder than we ever have and that starts with them.”

Werner then gave praise to Patterson and how dangerous he can be to opposing defenses as he goes up against him this week.

“He’s one of those guys who is kind of tricky,” Werner said. “He’s got a lot of different options, he scrambles very well, throws a great ball and if you’re (caught) lacking around, leave a guy open, he’s going to make a play from it.”

Safety Jordan Fuller brought up the Michigan wide receivers and how much of a challenge they will be for the secondary this week.

“We definitely look forward to it,” Fuller said. “After watching the film and just knowing them from prior years, they’re definitely a very talented group, one of the most talented groups we play all year, so we definitely have our hands full with them. But I’m confident in our group as well. So we’re going to prepare hard and try to get a bead on the kinds of stuff they like to do. But we definitely have our hands full. It should be fun.”

“They have guys that have great hands, that can go up and get the ball but also, when they have the ball in their hands, they can they can make something happen with it,” Fuller said. “They can attack you in every which way. So that’s something you’ve got to be prepared for.”

Michigan takes on Ohio State at noon EST on FOX as they play in the Big House in Ann Arbor, MI.

5 Players to Watch Against Ohio State

Michigan football takes on Ohio State in the season finale as the Wolverines try and pull off an upset. Who are the five players to watch?

[jwplayer 12StHCZs-XNcErKyb]

Michigan’s biggest challenge of the year, Ohio State, is this week as the Wolverines look to try and pull off something nobody has been able to do this season, beat the Buckeyes. Michigan is coming off a 39-14 win over Indiana. Ohio State is coming off a 28-17 win over Penn State that made the Buckeyes look human.

Ohio State’s playoff hopes are on the line this week as a loss would put them up in the air. A win in the Big Ten championship off a loss to Michigan would put them right back in the fight. A loss could still be something as if they beat Michigan, then lose in the title game next week, their season could be over. Beating Michigan gives them a cushion if they lose the conference championship game next week.

Michigan would love nothing more than to ruin the Buckeyes playoff hopes and undefeated season. For that to happen, they will need everyone to help out and contribute to their absolute best. Check out which five players to watch for Saturday’s game below.

1. QB Shea Patterson – MICHIGAN

When you talk about Michigan’s recent success, it all starts with the quarterback play by Shea Patterson. Patterson has been playing the best football he’s ever played lately, throwing for 1,001 yards, 12 touchdowns and an interception in his team’s four-game winning streak. Patterson is taking control of the offense and doing things we haven’t seen until recently.

He’s taking shots downfield, letting his receivers go up and grab the football where the defender can’t grab it. He isn’t running as much as he was earlier in the year, but that can certainly change this week when going up against the best defense in the country. Patterson needs to keep playing with the hot hand that he’s had recently if he wants to keep his record in Ann Arbor without a loss.

For Ohio State’s offense, their quarterback who is in the Heisman race this year…

Ohio State Football: 5 CFP Scenarios to keep an eye on

Ohio State Football will likely make it into the College Football Playoffs, but there are still important scenarios to keep an eye on.

The Ohio State football team has a good shot at making it into the College Football Playoff as long as it takes care of business. Recently returning to the top overall seed, committee members saw a terrible Buckeye performance still turn a dominant win on the scoreboard against Penn State.

With the win, the Buckeyes pushed their record to 11-0. They were able to take down the Nittany Lions behind outstanding performance from DE Chase Young and company, and running back J.K. Dobbins.

Young totaled three sacks and a career-high nine tackles, harassing the quarterback on almost every dropback. Dobbins put up 157 yards and two scores against one of the best rushing defenses in the nation.

Now with wins over Wisconsin, Penn State and Cincinnati (beating the one-loss Bearcats by 42), OSU has to finish the season out with Michigan and then the Big Ten Championship Game, already having clinched the Big Ten East and a bid to Indy.

For CFP implications, their matchup with a red-hot Michigan may not matter much. However, for pride, it almost matters more than any other thing this season can offer.

That said, let’s dive into five scenarios that you’ll want to watch for as we enter the home stretch of games.

Ohio State Football: Chase Young, J.K. Dobbins named Big Ten Player of the Week

Chase Young and J.K. Dobbins, following a 28-17 victory over the No. 8 Penn State, were both named Big Ten Player of the Week.

Chase Young and J.K. Dobbins, following a 28-17 victory over the No. 8 ranked Penn State, were both named Big Ten Player of the Week, along with Michigan’s Shea Patterson.

Young, who was awarded the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, managed a career-high nine tackles. He also set the Ohio State single-season sack record, with three against Penn State to push his season total to 16.5.

A consensus top-three overall pick, Young has been one of the most dominant players in college football and is up for year-end awards as the nation’s best defender and player.

As for J.K. Dobbins, he’ll be splitting the honor of Offensive Player of the Week with Michigan’s Shea Patterson. Dobbins looked unstoppable on Saturday, running for over 150 yards and two scores against one of the country’s best run defenses.

Had the bulk of Ohio State’s games been close in the fourth quarter, we may be talking about him in the driver’s seat to secure the single-season rushing record. Sadly, that won’t likely happen.

Through 11 games, Dobbins already has a career-high 1,446 yards. He’s also three yards shy of 1,600 all-purpose yards. He’s been a quality every-down back when Ohio State has needed him the most.

Both Dobbins and Young need to replicate the performance they had against Penn State this upcoming Saturday as Ohio State travels to Michigan.

Rivalry week is upon us, and it’s only fitting Young and Dobbins shine on what most Ohio State fans will consider to be the biggest game yet this season.

CFP Rankings: Cotton Bowl Dream Dead for Notre Dame

Perhaps both Ohio State and Minnesota win Saturday, handing Michigan and Wisconsin their third losses of the year, but after that it gets tricky.

Although no games were played Tuesday night Notre Dame saw their hopes of ending their season in the Cotton Bowl for a second year in a row come to an unofficial end.

As the College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night, Notre Dame remained at number 16 in the country, still the lowest of any two-loss power-five teams and also still behind three-loss Auburn.

So as it sits with No. 16 Notre Dame having just one game remaining against an under-500 Stanford team that won’t count for much, even if it does end with a 50 point win for the Irish.

The problem is that Notre Dame has already routed better teams than Stanford in recent weeks and gained no ground.

Unless you can figure out a way that Notre Dame jumps six teams and gets into the top-ten, then they’re headed to Orlando for the Camping World Bowl against a Big XII team.

With the games remaining it’s hard to find six losses that are going to benefit Notre Dame.

Auburn losing to Alabama would probably finally get the Irish ahead of the currently three-loss Tigers.

Perhaps both Ohio State and Minnesota win Saturday, handing Michigan and Wisconsin their third losses of the year, but after that it gets tricky.

Kansas over Baylor or Rutgers over Penn State?  No help coming in either of those.

Same pretty much going for Colorado’s chances against Utah, Florida State’s to upset Florida.

Not only would Notre Dame need one of those to happen, they’d need three of the last four listed in order to have a chance, couple with those Auburn, Michigan and Wisconsin losses listed above.

As you can tell the chances at the Cotton Bowl are about as good as gone. so if interested you might as well get those flights booked to Orlando.

That’s the unfortunate reality when what happens in Ann Arbor in late October happen to you in front of a national audience.

Ohio State jumps LSU for top spot in College Football Playoff rankings

Ohio State has taken this week’s top spot in the College Football Playoff rankings, sending LSU to No. 2

There’s a new No. 1 in college football.

In the latest rankings for the College Football Playoff released Tuesday night, Ohio State has leapfrogged LSU for the top spot following Saturday’s convincing win over Penn State.

Chase Young, the consensus top prospect in the 2020 NFL draft class, was instrumental in the Buckeyes’ big win, dominating the Nittany Lions all game long.

LSU is two weeks removed from taking down Alabama, but they drop to No. 2 in the latest rankings, followed by Clemson and Georgia.

While the Tigers drop to No. 2, they’re still undefeated, and led by Joe Burrow, the top quarterback prospect in this year’s draft class.

The Crimson Tide come in at No. 5, while Utah grabs the No. 6 spot, taking advantage of an upset loss by Pac-12 rival Oregon last week.

Here’s the updated top 10:

New Award Names Notre Dame Senior A Finalist

Because aside from a speed bump late against Virginia Tech, he hasn’t messed up in those 37 games.

John Shannon has started the last 37 games for Notre Dame, a stretch that has seen the Irish go 31-6 and compete in the College Football Playoff.

But chances are unless you’re an absolute diehard fan, that you don’t recognize the name.

That’s because aside from a speed bump late against Virginia Tech, he hasn’t messed up in those 37 games.

John Shannon is Notre Dame’s long-snapper and despite having a remaining year of eligibility, it appears he may be headed to the FBI or Secret Service instead of returning to Notre Dame for one final season in 2020.

Before Shannon ultimately makes that decision though, he’ll go down as one of the best in the country at the specific task as Monday saw him named a finalist for the inaugural Patrick Mannelly Award.

Joining Shannon as finalists are Liam McCullough of Ohio State and Steven Wirtel of Iowa State.

The winner of the inaugural award will be announced December 14 in Lake Bluff, Illinois.

Patrick Mannelly is widely-regarded as the best long-snapper of the modern NFL era (Award websites words, not mine). The longtime Chicago Bears long snapper played more games as a Bear (245) than any other player in history.

Georgia football falls in CBS Sports’ CFB rankings

Georgia football dropped in CBS Sports’ CFB rankings.

It’s a good thing the only poll that matters is the College Football Playoff rankings. Well, at least for now. We’ll find out if I will still be saying that on Tuesday night when those are released.

But after a week in which Georgia did not look particularly great in a 19-13 win over Texas A&M in Athens, CBS Sports dropped the Bulldogs one spot in its rankings, swapping them with Alabama. The Dawgs remained No. 4 in both the Amway Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25.

Related: Kirk Herbstreit predicts CFP teams if Georgia beats LSU

CBS Sports’ new-top is as follows:

1. LSU

2. Ohio State

3. Clemson

4. Alabama

5. Georgia

6. Utah

7. Oklahoma

8. Florida

9. Minnesota

10. Baylor

Alabama looked good, sure. But it was against Western Carolina. The Tide may very well still be able to win a national championship over any of the playoff committee’s top-four teams, but if you don’t win your conference, let alone your division, you should not be given the opportunity to prove that.

Here is my prediction for what the College Football Playoff rankings will look like on Tuesday night.

Michigan DE on Ohio State: “We don’t see them as unbeatable”

The Ohio State Buckeyes are a perfect 11-0, yet Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson doesn’t think this dominant team is unbeatable.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are a perfect 11-0, yet Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson doesn’t think this dominant team is unbeatable.

I guess he hasn’t watch Ohio State. While that’s in partial jest, the Buckeyes have looked virtually impossible to beat at times this season. They combine a rare mix of unstoppable offense and forceful defense.

Yet, at the end of the day, Ohio State is beatable. Every team IS beatable.

However, with three fumbles, two of which led to critical Penn State points this past Saturday, Ohio State also proved that even at their worst they’re still a formidable opponent, downing the No. 8 ranked Nittany Lions 28-17

That said, Hutchinson is right. It’s just highly unlikely his Wolverines down the undefeated Buckeyes. Here’s his full statement.

Michigan is hitting stride, defeating Indiana last week 39-14. They also have a quality and telling victory over Notre Dame, a game they won 45-14. Now sitting at No. 10, the Wolverines have a chance.

According to ESPN, Michigan has just a 26.1% chance to beat the Buckeyes. That said, I’d bank on another double-digit victory for the Buckeyes.

College Football Playoff projections following Week 13

Predicting the College Football Playoff rankings after Week 13.

Week 13 saw Georgia football beat a talented Texas A&M team to advance to 10-1 on the season.

Georgia looked like it has all season – unable to finish a drive on offense but smothering on defense.

That’s been Georgia’s recipe this season, but how much longer will it work? We will find out in two weeks when the Dawgs take on LSU in Atlanta.

Right now, Georgia is sitting at No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings behind LSU (1), Ohio State (2) and Clemson (3).

Right behind the Bulldogs is Alabama, hoping that it can not only win next week vs Auburn but also that LSU will take care of business in the SEC Championship, thus eliminating Georgia from playoff contention.

Behind Alabama currently is Oregon, but that won’t last long after the Ducks lost to Arizona State. The best part about Oregon losing is that now we don’t have to hear about how Rob Mullens, the Oregon AD and the chair of the CFP selection committee, is “recused from the room” when the committee discusses the Ducks. Is it just me, or has that been mentioned way too many times this season?

Ohio State definitely had the most impressive win of the weekend among the teams near the top of the rankings (Arizona State probably had the best win, though, in beating Oregon). I would not expect the committee to swap LSU and OSU, however. LSU’s beaten plenty of top-ten teams itself.

Then there’s Utah, which is 10-1 and needs some help to make it into the final four. The Utes have not really beaten anyone, but if Georgia and Alabama both fall and Utah wins its conference, then it has a much better argument.

Oklahoma, however, assuming it wins out, will be right there with Utah vying for that last Playoff spot if both Alabama and Georgia lose before the final rankings reveal after the conference championship games wrap up.
