Ohio State women’s basketball gets 5-star point guard commitment

BOOM! The Ohio State women’s basketball teams gets a massive commitment. #GoBucks

It is a family affair for the Cambridge clan and the Ohio State women’s basketball team.

Kennedy is already in Columbus and now her sister, [autotag]Jaloni Cambridge,[/autotag] will join her. The 2024 Tennessee native point guard verbally committed to the Buckeyes on Friday afternoon, giving head coach [autotag]Kevin McGuff[/autotag] one of the best players in the class.

Jaloni is ranked by ESPN’s HoopGurlz as the No. 3 prospect in the country, giving her 5-star status. She is the top ranked point guard, who stands 5-foot, 6-inches and preps at high school hoops powerhouse Montverde Academy in Florida.

This is a massive recruiting win for the Lady Bucks, who are currently 10-2 and ranked in both major polls.

Cambridge joins Ava Watson and Ella Hobbs in the Buckeyes 2024 recruiting class, which will be looked at as one of the best in the country.

Ohio State women’s basketball downs Belmont

Back in the win column! #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s basketball team bounced back to get back in the win column after dropping a game against No. 2 UCLA earlier in the week by taking its aggressions out on Belmont Friday, 84-55.

It took the Buckeyes a little while to get going, but once they did, they ran away with the game. The two teams played a nip and tuck game until about three three minutes left in the first half when OSU finished on an 11-2 run to head into the locker room up 38-28.

The second half began like the first half ended with Ohio State still controlling the game and continuing to extend the lead out by creating a slew of turnovers. The Bruins finished with a whopping 23 turnovers that led to 21 points for OSU.

Ohio State also shot the ball much better than Belmont, 52.5% to 36.5% and had nine more shot attempts. A bunch of those shots were taken, and made, by guard Jacy Sheldon, who scored over 30 points for the second-straight game, this time by pouring in 31 on 12-of-18 shooting, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. She also had two rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Helping with the scoring in double figures were Celeste Taylor and Ricki Harris who scored 15 and 10 points respectively.

With the win, Ohio State improves its record to 10-2 and will have a bit of a break before traveling to Michigan on Saturday, December 30.

Ohio State women’s basketball falls to No. 2 UCLA

OSU got it going to late and fell to UCLA at home on Monday night. #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s basketball team couldn’t quite reel-in No. 2 UCLA during a rally in the fourth quarter, losing 77-71 inside of Value City Arena on Monday night.

Things started off well for the Buckeyes as they raced out to an early lead, but the Bruins slowly took control of the contest later in the second quarter and headed into the locker room up 37-31. The Bruins would further exert their will in the pivotal third quarter, stretching the lead out to a commanding 63-45 advantage heading into the fourth.

From there, Jacy Sheldon and Ohio State used a 14-2 run beginning at around the eight minute mark to pull to within 69-59 make things interesting, but UCLA had an answer before the Lady Bucks went on another run to close the deficit to just six points with under a minute left.

It was too little too late as the Bruins closed things out at the free throw line.

Sheldon had one whale of a game, scoring 30 points on 12-of-23 field goals, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. She also chipped in three rebounds, three assists, and one steal, while turning the ball over just once. Taylor Thierry also scored in double figures with 20 points.

Ohio State’s inability to match the Bruins on the glass (40 rebounds to 30) and its poor shooting (just 38.5%) ultimately ended up being the Buckeyes demise.

With the loss, OSU drops to 9-2 on the year and will next host Belmont on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET.

Ohio State’s Cotie McMahon seals gold medal win for Team USA

Cotie McMahon put Team USA on top for good in the championship game! #GoBucks

Cotie McMahon is good at basketball. The Ohio State freshman broke out for the Buckeyes on the court last year helping lead her team to an appearance in the Elite Eight. She also garnered Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Conference during her first year in Scarlet and Gray.

Now the sophomore-to-be can add gold medalist to her list of accomplishments. McMahon was selected to the Team USA U19 squad as one of 12 players selected for the honor earlier this year.

Team USA steamrolled its way through the tournament handling every other team with relative ease until the gold medal match with Spain. The Spaniards proved a formidable opponent giving the Stars and Stripes all they could handle right up to the final moments of the game. But that’s when Ohio State’s McMahon stepped in and scored the go-ahead bucket in the final minute to secure the Gold for the United States.

McMahon would score 16 points, add six rebounds and three assists in the championship match. For the tournament, she averaged 8.9 points per game, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists.

The OSU sophomore will be back on the court for the Buckeyes this fall and will be one of the top players in the country.

Charity volleyball tournament to feature Ohio State football players Saturday

Through the OSU collective, the Cohesion Foundation, a volleyball tournament fundraiser will feature several Ohio State football players.

Name, Image, and Likeness is here to stay, and despite some of the negative press surrounding it, there are plenty of really good things happening around the monumental change in college athletics.

Take an event occurring on Saturday, for instance. Through one of the Ohio State collectives, the Cohesion Foundation, a charity volleyball tournament will be taking place on Saturday at Woodland’s Backyard.

“Land On A Cure Foundation” will be the benefactor of the event used to raise funds needed to help children battling rare diseases, and there will be some Ohio State women’s basketball as well as some Buckeye football players taking part.

And here’s the really cool part. Anyone can sign up to take part in the tournament. According to a release from The Cohesion Foundation, “games will be 6 vs 6 tournament style and there will be prizes for tournament champions, best dressed, team name, and most spirit!” Teams will have until Noon on Saturday, July 15 to register.

In addition to the tournament, there will also be a silent auction, a Brutus the Buckeye appearance, beer & wine tasting from local vendors, live music, and sand volleyball all night.

So, get your team together, or just head out to watch and donate at the door for a good cause.

Former Ohio State women’s basketball great, Kelsey Mitchell, makes WNBA All-Star team

In case you missed it, congrats to Kelsey Mitchell! #GoBucks

Former Ohio State women’s basketball star, Kelsey Mitchell, was named to her first WNBA All-Star game recently, as a reserve.

Mitchell’s accolades in college were numerous. She played for the Buckeyes from 2014 to 2018 and was named a four-time All-American. She led OSU to two Big Ten championships and finished her career averaging 24.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in the scarlet and gray. She still stands as the second all-time leading scorer in women’s NCAA history behind Washington’s Kelsey Plum.

Once in the WNBA, Mitchell has continued to put up impressive numbers, somehow missing out on several All-Star teams. With the Indiana Fever this year, she has averaged 17.0 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists so far this season.

Call us biased maybe, but it’s kind of crazy that she hasn’t made an All-Star squad yet, and that she only made it as a reserve this year. Something tells me there brighter things ahead on the horizon.

Ohio State Women’s basketball adds 2024 center from Finland

Kevin McGuff is putting together quite a class for 2024. #GoBucks

The Ohio State Women’s basketball team added another piece to its 2024 class earlier this week. Finnish center Elsa Lemmila announced her commitment to play for the Buckeyes on her personal Instagram page.

Lemmila stands at 6-foot-6 and most recently played for Finland’s U18 team where she averaged 12.9 points per game to go along with nine rebounds and 1.3 assists per contest.

There is potential for the Finnish center to have success in the Big Ten but will need to round out some aspects of her game. Scouting reports read:

Elsa runs the floor and boxes out reasonably well; she gets put backs, can put the ball on the floor, and displays a good touch near the basket; not an outside shooter at present. For post players, Elsa rates as above average in agility, foot speed, post moves, and blocks—although not great in any of these characteristics as of the moment. – Bucknuts

Lemmila becomes the fourth member of the OSU recruiting class which includes Ella Hobbs from Concord, North Carolina, Seini Hicks from Cincinnati, and most recently Ava Watson from Buford, Georgia.

Ohio State Women’s basketball gets verbal commitment from 2024 point guard

Ohio State gets its point guard of the future. #GoBucks

The Ohio State Women’s basketball team got some good news in the middle of summer. While the football team is busy making all the headlines hosting high-profile recruits at its summer camps, the lady hoops team got a verbal commitment of their own. Point guard, Ava Watson gave a verbal commitment to bring her talents to Columbus next season.

Watson is a top 50 player according to ESPN recruiting rankings and hails from Buford, Georgia. Although on the smaller side at 5′ 6″, Watson can put the ball in the basket. She averaged 24 points per game in her junior high school season while adding 6 rebounds per game, 5.2 assists, and 4.3 steals.

Watson picked the Buckeyes over Florida State, Georgia, Louisville, and Texas A&M.

Former Ohio State guard Taylor Mikesell has a classy response to one fan

Don’t try to give Taylor Mikesell a compliment at the expense of another player because she’s not having it. #GoBucks

Taylor Mikesell is a classy individual.

After helping lead the Ohio State women’s basketball team for the past two seasons, Mikesell was selected by the Indiana Fever as the first pick in the second round (No. 13 overall) in the 2023 WNBA draft. Unfortunately, she didn’t get much of a chance to show what she can do on the court and was released before the start of the season.

With only 12 roster spots among 12 teams in the WNBA, there are many good players who don’t make the cut. One fan tried to give Mikesell a compliment that didn’t go over so well with the former Buckeye.

In a since-deleted tweet, the fan showed a clip of Fever guard Lexie Hull air balling a three-point attempt with some disparaging comments about Hull while stating that the Fever could still have Mikesell. Hull was Indiana’s first-round pick in the 2022 WNBA draft.

Mikesell didn’t take kindly to the tweet and called the fan out saying “Lexie is a great player and a phenomenal person, this is completely unnecessary. She earned that spot and is more than deserving!”

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

What an absolute class act and honestly it would be good to see more athletes stand up to the online trolls who are oh-so brave behind the computer screen. Clearly, Mikesell got her point across as the tweet was taken down.

Mikesell is a very good basketball player and she’ll have other opportunities to play the game she loves. More than that, she is an even better human being. In a world of keyboard warriors, these are the acts that make the online world a better place. Well done Taylor. Well done.
