Ohio State women’s basketball up to No. 2 in the AP and Coaches polls

The Ohio State women’s basketball team might just be the hottest in the country right now. After defeating Nebraska on Wednesday night, the Buckeyes have now won 12-straight games and have taken sole possession of first place in the Big Ten.

And, with all of that winning, you’d expect the team to have moved up the polls, and indeed that has happened. The Buckeyes are now No. 2 in both the AP and Coaches polls, just behind No. 1 South Carolina with an overall record of 22-3. It ties the highest ranking ever for the program.

There are just four games remaining in the regular season, with three games vs. non-ranked opponents leading into the season finale against a top five Iowa team on the road on March 3. That one could be for the league title at that point.

Rounding out the top ten behind South Carolina and OSU in the AP poll is Stanford, Iowa, Texas, North Carolina State, Kansas State, Colorado, UCLA, and USC.

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark passes former Ohio State guard Kelsey Mitchell for all-time Big Ten scoring lead

A former Ohio State great is no longer the all-time Big Ten scoring leader in women’s basketball. #GoBucks

The inevitable happened.

Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark has been putting up some astronomical scoring numbers since her arrival in Iowa City, and you just knew if she stayed healthy, she was going to break some major records.

One of those fell tonight when Clark passed former Ohio State guard Kelsey Mitchell for the all-time Big Ten scoring lead in a game against the Northwestern Wildcats. Mitchell, who played for the Buckeyes from 2014-2018, tallied 3,402 points in her career, but that was easily topped by Clark on Wednesday night.

Either way, I’m not sure many knew that Mitchell still held the all-time scoring record in the Big Ten. Clark is now second all-time in the NCAA too, meaning Mitchell is now No. 3 all-time in the NCAA record books.

Clark is chasing Washington’s Kasey Plum who scored 3,527 points in her career. That record is almost sure to fall as well in the very near future.

Jacy Sheldon makes late season Wooden Award watchlist

It’s been a pretty fun and exciting year for the Ohio State women’s basketball team thus far throughout the 2023-2024 season. One reason for that is senior guard Jacy Sheldon, who made the decision to come back for one more season in the Scarlet and Gray.

She’s been a difference-maker her entire career, but now she’s getting more recognition that she’s probably gotten so far. For more proof, look no further than the latest Wooden late season watchlist that was released on Tuesday. Sheldon is one of 20 names that made the cut and will still be in consideration for the award that goes to the best women’s college basketball player annually.

So far this season, Sheldon is averaging a team-leading 17.6 points per contest to go along with 3.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.2 steals per contest in over 33 minutes per game.

The Wooden Award recipient will be announced on Tuesday, April 4 on ESPN. We’ll keep an eye on where Sheldon is in all of the shenanigans leading up to that date.

Ohio State women’s basketball has high seed in latest ESPN bracketolody

The Ohio State women’s basketball team has been on a roll lately, upsetting No. 2 Iowa and winning two-straight games on the road to keep pace in the Big Ten, tied for first with the Hawkeyes and Indiana Hoosiers.

It’s a year the Lady Bucks are no doubt destined to head to the postseason NCAA Tournament, but how they finish the season will determine how high of a seed they get and what kind of road is before them.

Since we are interested in where the OSU women stand with these types of things we occasionally check in with ESPN’s Charlie Creme and his “bracketology.” So where does Creme have Ohio State after his latest January 30 update?

According to where things stand right now, Creme has the Buckeyes listed as a No. 3 seed in the Portland 2 region, but starting its journey off in Columbus of all places as an automatic qualifier presumably winning the Big Ten Tournament. The Buckeyes opponent is No. 14 seed Albany.

All of this will no doubt change more than a politician’s stance on a subject blowing in the wind, but it at least gets you an idea of where OSU might fall in the postseason at this point.

Ohio State women’s basketball moves up in latest AP poll

Movin’ on up! #GoBucks

It’s been a fun couple of weeks for the Ohio State women’s basketball team. There was the season-defining win over No. 2 Iowa, followed up by two road victories this past week against Illinois and Purdue. In total, the Lady Bucks have now won seven games in a row.

And now, comes the spoils of success. For a door prize, OSU has moved up to No. 8 in the latest AP Poll. Ahead of the Buckeyes are UCLA (7), Colorado (6), NC State (5), Stanford (4), Iowa (3), Kansas State (2), and South Carolina (1).

OSU has an overall record of 17-3, including a Big Ten record of 8-1, which is good for a three-way tie for first in the league with Iowa and Indiana.

Ohio State will continue to keep its winning ways going when it hosts Wisconsin (Thursday) and Indiana (Sunday) this week.

Ohio State women’s basketball gets road victory over Purdue

Another win for the Lady Bucks. #GoBucks

It was a close one, but the Ohio State women’s basketball team got itself a 71-68 road win over Purdue on Sunday.

It was a nip and tuck affair all the way throughout, but a little bizarre in the fact that the largest lead was nine points by Ohio State, while Purdue led just one time in the game by a single point in the third quarter.

The Buckeyes scored the first seven points of the game and looked to be well on their way to another victory, but it’s tough to win on the road in the Big Ten, and Purdue wasn’t about to let things get away. In fact, the Boilermakers battled back and finished the first quarter down just one point at 20-19.

OSU took modest control in the second quarter and headed to the locker room at halftime up 33-27. The third quarter was pretty close to a stalemate, then Ohio State looked to take hold of the game in the fourth quarter before Purdue started to rally late in the fourth quarter, even getting the lead down to two points with just :21 seconds left before OSU’s Jacy Sheldon sealed it at the free throw line.

Rebeka Mikulasikova led the Buckeyes with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She was joined with two other Ohio State players in double figures. Taylor Thierry scored 14 points and Cotie McMahon chipped in 10 points.

With the win, OSU improves its overall record to 17-3, and conference mark to 8-1, good for a three-way tie at the top with Iowa and Indiana.

Ohio State women’s basketball comes from behind in second half to beat Illinois

In case you missed it, the Lady Bucks came from behind to keep things along their winning ways on Thursday night. #GoBucks

It would have been somewhat excusable to see the Ohio State women’s basketball team experience a letdown after a massive home overtime win over Iowa last weekend.

And it looked like that might be the case for some time on Thursday night against Illinois when the Lady Bucks headed into halftime down 33-22 after scoring just four points in the second quarter. The second half was a different story, however, as OSU outscored the Fighting Illini by 17 points in the second half on its way to a 67-59 victory in Champaign, Illinois.

Jacy Sheldon led Ohio State with 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting, including 5-of-6 from the free throw line. She also had six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Cotie McMahon and Celeste Taylor also scored in double figures with 17 and 14 respectively.

It was a major test against a bit of a gut punch vs. an Illini team that is starting to play much better than its 8-10 record, and one where the comeback was orchestrated on the road.

With the win, Ohio State improves to 16-3 overall and 7-1 in the Big Ten, good to pull into a three-way tie in the conference with Iowa and Indiana. The Buckeyes will next travel to Purdue on Sunday.

Ohio State vs. Iowa was most watched regular-season women’s basketball game since 2010

Impressive numbers for the Lady Bucks win over Iowa last weekend. #GoBucks

It was one whale of a game, and now we know that many were tuned in to see it all unfold.

The Ohio State women’s basketball team hosted No. 2 Iowa this past weekend and won in exhilarating fashion in overtime to move to just 1/2 game behind first place in the Big Ten and start to make a push for national recognition.

And it wasn’t just Buckeyes and Hawkeyes that seemed to tune into the thrilling matchup. According to NBC Sports PR, OSU vs. Iowa was the most-watched regular season women’s college basketball game since 2010. If you’re doing the quick math, that’s 14 years of games (on any network), which is mighty, mighty impressive. The game drew a whopping 1.93 million viewers on average.

Things peaked at 3.9 million viewers when the game went to overtime and saw the Buckeyes take control thanks to a 17-9 scoring margin to put the game away.

The Lady Bucks will now try to corral this momentum and take it on the road against Illinois on Thursday.

Well, that was fun.

The Ohio State women’s basketball team welcomed in No. 2 Iowa and star Caitlin Clark on Sunday and Value City Arena was hopping with the anticipation of a potential upset.

An upset it was, as the Buckeyes used a late surge in overtime to get by the visiting Hawkeyes by a score of 100-92. With the win, Ohio State moves to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in the conference, just 1/2 game behind both Iowa and Indiana.

It was a sold-out crowd and the environment made for some pretty amazing pictures and we pulled out some of the best ones to share with you. From start to finish, it was probably one of the best environments the Schottenstein Center has seen in quite some time.

Ohio State led by Cotie McMahon defeats Caitlin Clark, Iowa at home

The Lady Bucks were on fire Sunday against Iowa and Caitlin Clark

In a nationally televised game, the [autotag]Ohio State women’s basketball[/autotag] team in front of a sellout crowd defeated national player of the year front-runner [autotag]Caitlin Clark[/autotag] and her Iowa Hawkeyes 100-92 in overtime.

The Buckeyes were lead by [autotag]Cotie McMahon[/autotag], who scored a career-high 33 points on 12-of-23 shooting while also grabbing 12 rebounds for a double-double. The star sophomore was dominant as the game ended and in overtime, as she scored 8 of her points in the extra period.

It wasn’t just McMahon doing the work for the Lady Bucks, who saw each one of their starters reach double-figures scoring, with Jacy Sheldon adding 24 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

The win a big one for the Buckeyes, as it moved them to the No. 2 spot with Indiana, but behind Iowa for the Big Ten lead. It gives them a signature win as they look to get a high seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Ohio State is now 15-2 on the year, 6-1 in the Big Ten and looking to make some big time noise for the remainder of the season.
