Ohio State was able to win its sixth-straight game by taking care of business against Indiana. Here are three takeaways from the game.

Your Ohio State basketball team is officially in first place in the Big Ten, at least according to wins and losses. Technically speaking, Michigan remains in first place by winning percentage, with Illinois just behind, but all three teams are locked in at the top of the league because of a different number of games played.

The reason OSU has vaulted all the way to the top of the league is because it just knocked off Indiana for its sixth-straight win and ninth in its last ten. All of this, in a league that is the deepest and toughest to navigate in the country. This game against the Hoosiers, unlike some in the recent past, was rather free of drama with a 78-57 comfortable win.

Here are three things we observed as takeaways in this one.

Terrapins head coach Mark Turgeon met with the local media after the game to discuss what he saw from his team, but had some very complimentary things to say about Ohio State as well. He complimented the Buckeyes’ depth, shooting, and ability so much that he focused more on some positives for what his team showed against such a high-quality team.

The Ohio State basketball team just keeps showing everyone it is for real. The Buckeyes started a little slowly against Maryland on Monday night, but eventually found the mental and physical toughness they’ve been known for as of late, and turned back the Terrapins 73-65 in College Park.

With the win, the OSU pulls to within just 1/2 game of first place Michigan with a 10-4 conference record. Ohio State runs its overall record to 16-4 in what continues to be an improbable and exhilarating run through a tough Big Ten schedule.

Head coach Chris Holtmann met with the media after the win to discuss what he saw from his team and to convey some respect for the Maryland program. Ohio State continues winning ways, downs Maryland on the road: 3 takeaways

Ohio State traveled to Maryland and won its fifth-straight Big Ten contest. Here are three takeaways from the victory in College Park.

Ohio State just keeps winning games in multiple ways. Monday night, Maryland came out intent on punching the Buckeyes in the mouth, and for a while, it worked.

The Terrapins played a physical brand of ball with a lot of movement towards the rim that resulted in an early lead. Just like so many games before this season though, OSU found a way to get points with what the opposition was giving it, clamped down on defense, and won another road contest in the rough and tumble Big Ten by the score of 73-65.

There is a lot to unpack with this one, especially with the way the Buckeyes responded and took care of business in the face of a team that seemed motivated and bent on turning some heads across the college basketball world tonight.

As we do with every game, here are three things we observed and can take away from Ohio State’s fifth-straight win, and a victory in eight of the last nine.

Here we go again with another game in the Big Ten for Ohio State that it’ll have to put its best LeBron shoes forward for. Don’t let the record fool you. Maryland is a very talented team that can beat anyone in the league, as evidenced by its win over Illinois in Champaign.

The Buckeyes have become known as road warriors, with four top fifteen wins away from Value City Arena, and it’ll need to travel well again as it heads to College Park to tussle with the Terrapins.

With each passing game, there continues to be more and more on the line for the Buckeyes. We don’t know when first-place Michigan will be out of its COVID-19 protocol, but OSU is breathing down its neck, just one game out in the conference standings.

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Buckeyes are in a groove. They’ve won four straight and seven of their last eight by getting hot from three, finding an attitude on the road, and with the offense ramping it up since an early January loss to Minnesota.

Part of the reason for the production is the lack of mistakes, the team gets to the free throw line a whole lot, and more than anything else, the shots are going down.

Maryland isn’t a big rebounding team and it doesn’t force enough mistakes to screw up the Ohio State O, however …

For all of the great things the Buckeyes are doing, they don’t come up with steals, they’re not great at coming up with a slew of assists, and they’re not all that great at stopping teams from three.

Maryland is a quirky team that doesn’t score a whole lot and keeps games close, but can it get hot from the outside at home? This isn’t a great shooting team, but it’ll grind the game down to a stop at times and it has to connect from three just enough to stay in it. The OSU defense should let that happen.

Why Ohio State Will Win

Justin Fields was supposed to be great, but … this?

Beyond brilliant, he has thrown 11 incompletions in two games, and 11 touchdown passes, hitting 87% of his throws for 908 yards, no picks, and with two rushing scores.

For all of the good things Maryland has done so far, its run defense was rocked by Northwestern and Minnesota, and the secondary was hit by Penn State for 340 yards. Fields and Ohio State should be able to move the ball however they want to.

Maryland is going fast, fast, fast, but that means it never has the ball. The offense has only had control for just over 25 minutes a game, Ohio State keeps it for almost 34 minutes per game, and that’s going to matter.

The Buckeyes will be able to slow things down if needed. The Terps can’t.

Why Maryland Will Win

Apparently, Taulia Tagovailoa’s performance against Minnesota was no fluke.

He led the comeback over the Gophers with 394 passing yards and three scores and two rushing touchdowns, and followed it up with 282 yards and three passing scores against Penn State. When the Maryland offense works, the big plays are happening down the field.

Penn State and Rutgers were able to throw on the Buckeye secondary. Even if the production came late – for the most part – when the outcome was already decided, it’s possible to connect on enough big plays to stay alive.

Maryland has the offense to make this a whole lot of fun, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State has a pass rush.

It might not have Chase Young around anymore, but the Buckeyes still lead the Big Ten in sacks. The biggest key against Penn State, though, were the takeaways, coming up with three turnovers while not giving the ball away.

Ohio State has turned it over twice in three games. It’s not going to give Maryland enough easy moments to capitalize on as it gets up early and coasts. However, the Terps will score enough late to at least keep the final score from being a total wipeout.

Ohio State travels to Maryland this week to take on a team that’s getting its act together. Here’s your preview and prediction for the game.

We’re three games into the 2020 season and Ohio State has taken care of business thus far as they trek towards the toughest leg of their schedule. After taking care of Rutgers and trick plays galore, the Buckeyes are now on to face upstart Maryland.

Seriously, did anyone look at the schedule at the beginning of the season and see this stretch as the part that could make or break the Buckeyes season? If you said yes… I don’t believe you. But it is looking more and more likely to be the case.
