Scouting the Alabama Crimson Tide. Four things that can be exploited by Ohio State.

Before Ohio State takes the field against Alabama for the National Championship, we scout Alabama for weaknesses the BUckeyes can exploit.

Here we go again! The Ohio State Buckeyes will take on the Alabama Crimson Tide for the national championship. The Buckeyes head into the game with an offense clicking on all cylinders, while the Alabama machine just keeps on chugging. Much like 2014, the Buckeyes running game is hitting its stride and blowing teams off the field when it matters most.

This Alabama team is a little different than the 2014 team in that the strength is more about the offense than the defense. Against the two top tier offenses the Crimson Tide played, the average points given up was a whopping 47. The Buckeyes can put up points, but before we get to that later this week, let’s break down Alabama and what you need to know.

Here are some of the key things about Nick Saban’s crew that jumped out about the 2020 season and where there might be some chinks in the armor.

WATCH: Ryan Day College Football Playoff media availability

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day met with media members Monday virtually to discuss the upcoming CFP National Championship game vs. Alabama.

Ohio State slew one dragon by taking down Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, and now it’s off to take on another in the College Football National Championship game against Alabama in a week’s time.

Before all of that happens, there is practice and preparation to occur, as well as plenty of media opportunities for the Buckeye and Crimson Tide players and coaches. The first of those media obligations took place on Monday with both head coaches and a couple of players from each team being made available on Zoom calls with reporters.

Alabama’s Nick Saban had some very complimentary things to say about Ohio State, and after that, we heard from OSU head coach Ryan Day. If you didn’t get to watch or listen to any of his comments, you can do so here thanks to the wonderment of internet video provided by the fine folks at the College Football Playoff.

Watch the below and listen to Ryan Day discuss the health of Justin Fields, the emergence of Trey Sermon, what it means to be in this game playing Alabama, and more.

As a reminder, Ohio State will face off with Alabama on Monday, January 11, down in Miami Gardens, Florida at Hard Rock Stadium. As another reminder, there will be further interviews that we’ll bring to you as they occur throughout the week.

Look. Paul Finebaum believes Nick Saban and Alabama are happier seeing Ohio State rather than Clemson

The SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum believes Alabama and Nick Saban are happy they are facing Ohio State instead of Clemson in the title game.

It had become the matchup of the College Football Playoff era — Alabama vs. Clemson. Ohio State got things rockin’ in the first playoff. Since then, save for last year’s LSU run, the Tigers and Tide have dominated. The teams  matched up four times in the playoffs from the 2015 season through 2018. Both have a national title each during that time.

But for the second straight year, that matchup will not take place. Alabama missed the playoff for the first time last year, and the Buckeyes ran Clemson out of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Friday night.

So, just like at the end of the 2014 season, it’ll be Ohio State vs. Alabama, this time in South Florida for all the marbles.

And that’s where everyone’s favorite SEC chest-thumper comes in, Paul Finebaum. The SEC Network and radio personality always has something controversial to say it seems, and he has weighed in on what he believes Alabama head coach Nick Saban feels about facing OSU over the Tigers.

“I will say in a weird quirky sort of way, I think Nick Saban deep down is happy seeing Ohio State across the field than Clemson and it’s only because of the history,” Finebaum said. “We all know Alabama and Clemson’s history, and I think that’s a program down in South Carolina that knows it can beat Alabama. And I don’t think what happened in 2014 has any impact on this game — this is a completely different world we’re living in.”

“But I think Saban would prefer to take his chances against Ryan Day’s team against another matchup against Dabo Swinney, although really these days with Dabo Swinney you kind of invite that challenge because you don’t know how Dabo Swinney’s going to affect the outcome of the game through his mouth.”

Of course, only Saban knows how he feels about this matchup. However, you have to think based on how Ohio State played on New Year’s Day, there are all kinds of different challenges this Buckeye team presents that are going to keep the Alabama head coach up at night.

Alabama early favorite over Ohio State in College Football Playoff Championship game according to BetMGM

The early odds are out for the College Football Playoff national championship game, and Ohio State is an early underdog to Alabama.

Ohio State skinned the Clemson cat on Friday night and now looks ahead to lower the Tide in Miami for the national championship. It’s been a twisting, turning, eventful 2020 college football season, and the fact that we’re right here on the doorstep of the final, and biggest game of the season about a week away seems unbelievable and surreal.

But here we are. The Buckeyes proved all the media, hype-machines, narratives, and oddsmakers wrong by blasting Clemson by 21 points, and now they must do the same with Alabama.

The early line on the CFP national championship game is set and Ohio State is a prohibitive underdog once again. In fact, according to BetMGM, the Crimson Tide are favored by -7.5 points.

Odds courtesy of BetMGM, The King of Sportsbooks.

Being a dog against souther teams is nothing new for Ohio State. At the end of the 2002 season, the Miami Hurricanes were favored by two touchdowns, Alabama was favored significantly in the Sugar Bowl in 2014, and we all know about what occurred Friday night in New Orleans.

However, this Alabama team does seem to be one on a roll, and it’ll take everything the Buckeyes have, and maybe then some, to pull off yet another upset.

But, we’ve seen this movie before, and if there’s one team that has the physicality and athletes to match man for man against the Tide, it’s this OUS team.

Watch: Chris Olave hauls in a bomb from Justin Fields to put Ohio State up by three scores

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is continuing to light up the Clemson defense. Watch him throw a bomb to Chris Olave for a TD.

Momentum is a crazy thing in football. One minute things are going your way, then one big play and the big mo can shift to the other team in no time flat.

Ohio State marched down the field to open the half, but a Justin Fields interception gave Clemson some much-needed life. Trevor Lawrence led his Tiger teammates down the field to bring Clemson within two scores.

We’ve seen this story before. But credit Ohio State running backs Trey Sermon and Miyan Williams for sparking the Buckeye offense before Justin Fields let one fly for 56-yards to hit a streaking Chris Olave for the score.

Check out the scoring strike below.

Watch: Justin Fields find a wide open Jeremy Ruckert to give Ohio State lead in Sugar Bowl

Ohio State is finding a lot of offense so far against Clemson in the Sugar Bowl. Watch a well-designed misdirection for a Jeremy Ruckert TD.

After allowing Clemson two quick scoring drives, the Ohio State defense has seemed to settle in and the offense is starting to look like the one we thought it could.

Ryan Day is calling an excellent game, keeping the Tigers on their heels. Justin Fields had several nice runs on the Buckeyes third scoring drive of the first half, some by design, some out of necessity.

And just like it should, the running game is opening up the passing lanes. From the 17-yard line, Fields rolled out to his left before looking back right to find a wide-open Jeremy Ruckert.

Watch the poetry in motion as Ruckert waltzes into the endzone.

Watch: Justin Fields hits deep throw to Garrett Wilson to set up TD

Ohio State has the offense going in the Sugar Bowl against Clemson. Watch as Justin Fields hits Garrett Wilson for a diving catch.

Finding themselves down 14-7 in the first quarter of the Sugar Bowl, Ohio State got their first big passing play of the game. After running the ball effectively, it was the perfect time for a play-action pass play.

And the play worked to perfection with the defense getting sucked in on the fake to Trey Sermon as Garrett Wilson broke free streaking up the sideline. Fields pass was thrown just a bit out in front of Wilson, but No. 5 stretched out to make a spectacular catch.

Watch below as Fields lures the Clemson defense in, stands tall in the pocket, and delivers a dime to a diving Wilson.

Watch: Trey Sermon rips off 32 yard touchdown run in Sugar Bowl against Clemson

Ohio State running back Trey Sermon is already making a difference in the Sugar Bowl. Watch as he rips off a 32-yard TD against Clemson.

After the Ohio State defense gave up an opening drive that averaged over 10 yards per play to the Clemson Tigers, the Buckeyes have seemed to calm down a bit.

The Bucks went three and out on their opening drive but after getting Clemson to punt, Justin Fields and company took over and moved the ball right down the field. Fields found Trey Sermon on a check down and Sermon rumbled for 34 yards. On the very next play, Sermon took the handoff and ripped off a 32-yard run for the score.

Watch as Sermon runs through a huge lane courtesy of the Ohio State offensive line.

Let’s look back at the last time Ohio State and Alabama played… because we love it

With the two teams playing two huge games in a few years, let’s look at the last time Ohio State and Alabama met on the football field.

Ohio State’s resurgence under Urban Meyer came to the forefront in the 2014 college football season. The Buckeyes needed redemption after a few (relatively) disappointing performances in the national spotlight since 2005, and the road to redemption was always going to go through the SEC.

But, of course, why am I recapping this? Every Buckeye fan knows this. It was Ohio State’s redemption from a decade of being second-best. It was finally a (second) bowl win over an SEC program, after the Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas was vacated. And, perhaps most importantly, it was a huge win by a great program that no one gave a chance.

Well, with Ohio State and Alabama announcing a home-and-home series this decade, let’s look back on that game. And yes, I am using this as an excuse to write about the game, because, in all honesty, what Buckeye fan wouldn’t?

In fact, I think we here at the Buckeye Wire should look back at this game every chance we get. Heck, we should look back on it every day if we can. Honestly, the most popular Ohio State website could definitely be one that just plays highlights of this game over and over.

Is there any game in recent years that Buckeye fans, on the whole, love more than this one? Maybe one or two others come close. But this game defined the 2010s for Ohio State football, and Buckeye fans aren’t soon to forget it.

First, let’s start with the pre-game. When I said above that no one gave Ohio State a chance, I meant it. Here’s the ESPN pregame, where everyone picked Alabama to win.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rm2O-hSCMs&w=560&h=315]

I don’t want to go through every single highlight right now, and can definitely save that for another post (or ten, because this will be written about nonstop when Ohio State’s next game against Alabama approaches), but let’s skip through the first quarter. Ezekiel Elliot had a great run and Devin Smith a great catch, but the Buckeyes couldn’t pay off those drives with touchdowns, and turnovers let Alabama jump out to a 21-6 lead.

I’m even going to skip through the Buckeyes’ touchdown drive to bring it to 21-13, because I want to focus on just the biggest and best plays here.

Speaking of which, the Buckeyes ended the first half on what remains, to this day, the very best single play in College Football Playoff history. It’s a trick play, a perfect throw by a wide receiver, and a great catch by Michael Thomas, getting his foot down an inch away from the sideline. (Yes, I have a video of my reaction to this play. No, I will not be sharing it. Let’s just say that I ran up to the television in my college dorm lounge so I could point to the sliver of green between Thomas’ shoe and the sideline.)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhsISsfUsZA&w=560&h=315]

The next highlight I want to focus on came a bit later. After the Buckeyes took the lead on a beautiful touchdown pass from Cardale Jones to Devin Smith, the Buckeyes stretched their lead to 13 points on the most beautiful “big guy touchdown” in recent Buckeye history.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjgL0hHvIUI&w=560&h=315]

The next 15 minutes didn’t go so well for the Buckeyes. They never relinquished the lead, but it got stressful for a time. Let’s not overly focus on that section. I also don’t want to focus on the final play of the game (maybe I’ll do a separate post on that), because that Hail Mary throw came dangerously close to being caught. (Yes, it was intercepted by Tyvus Powell. But Powell was behind two Alabama receivers, and if that ball comes down half a yard shorter it could have been caught.)

Instead, let’s cap the game off for its most memorable moment:

85 Yards Through the Heart of the South.
