What Chase Herbstreit’s commitment to Michigan means for Ohio State

This feels like salt in the wound, but what does it really mean? #GoBucks

In case you missed the news, former Ohio State quarterback and ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit had someone from his household commit to one of the worst possible places he could, to Michigan.

And while all of Buckeye Nation seems to be puzzled by how the elder Herbstreit could let that happen, there is some important balance we should add to the situation. Remember, the twins that were often on the College GameDay set once committed to Clemson before Jake came back home to Columbus, so it’s not the first time a Herbstreit committed to a program OSU fans weren’t too keen on.

And at the end of the day, nobody should fault a kid — or family — for doing what they believe is best for their situation, no matter what or where that means. Chase’s brother, Zak, is currently a walk-on tight end for the Buckeyes.

This feels different though. Chase is an Ohio kid, currently finishing off his career at Cincinnati St. Xavier, and there aren’t worse colors an Ohio legacy recruit could wear than Maize and Blue.

Chase Herbstreit and his place in the recruiting rankings

However, we have to remember that Chase isn’t exactly a blue-chip recruit. He is a nice player, sure, but he’s a 3-star prospect and ranked as the No. 117 Ohio prospect and 148th quarterback in the entire 2025 class according to 247Sports. He is unranked in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. So, while a nice player, 247Sports doesn’t have any offers for the 6-foot, 2-inch, 185-pounder.

In other words, Ohio State did not offer, and did not have him on their radar. The only reason this is making a splash with Buckeye Nation is because it’s Herbie’s son that went the way of TTUN.

Why Michigan for Chase Herbstreit?

So, why the Maize and Blue? Especially when there doesn’t appear to be any other Division I programs that were tracking Chase and offering him a scholarship. Let’s call it what it is. Is it possible that Michigan wanted a little PR out of this deal? I mean, you’ve already beaten Ohio State four-straight years, why not offer a scholarship to one of the most well-known Buckeye families out there and have him come to The School Up North.

There’s trolling, and then there’s trolling the OSU program after already sticking the knife in the proverbial side and twisting it. Here’s to hoping Chase finds his way in Ann Arbor, but it’s unlikely that he is anything near the answer for Michigan, especially with the commitment of Bryce Underwood under center.

What Does it Chase Herbstreit’s commitment mean for Ohio State?

Really, nothing. Relax Ohio State fans and let a kid enjoy his moment and taking advantage of the opportunity presented to him by accepting a big-time football scholarship. All he wants is a chance to compete, and now he has his foot in the door and probably ready to work hard to make the most of it.

For OSU, the Buckeyes are more than fine at the quarterback position. Five-star Alabama transfer, Julian Sayin, is still there and ready to compete with Air Noland (at least for now). Coming in from the 2025 class is also home-grown 5-star prospect, Tavien St.-Claire, currently the No. 3 quarterback in the class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. His rise up the rankings have been something to watch and he’s already been around the program a lot.

Kirk Herbstreit’s response

As any father would, the elder Herbstreit reacted with pride on social media — and he should. Again, these things aren’t taken lightly and you can bet Kirk knew what kind of response Ohio State fans would have to this, but that’s never going to get in the way of what’s right for the family and his son.

This is all a lot to do about nothing, but for a rivalry so passionate as the one is between Ohio State and Michigan, and especially where things are with the Buckeyes right now, I guess it makes sense that emotions are raw and on the edge with OSU fans right now.

We say, good luck to you Chase, the rest of you should join in that as well.

Ohio State didn’t impress David Sanders Jr. enough to earn signing

The Ohio State Buckeyes welcomed lineman David Sanders Jr. for a late-season visit just to have him keep his commitment to Tennessee.

It was down to two for five-star offensive lineman David Sanders Jr.

He had the Ohio State Buckeyes and Tennessee Volunteers in his sights, and after a late-season visit for the Buckeyes top-ten battle with the Indiana Hoosiers, he chose the latter.

Sanders signed with the Volunteers on National Signing Day, making official his decision to join Tennessee. Sanders had committed to Tennessee back in August but visited Ohio State in November. After that visit, his decision was cemented.

Sanders is widely ranked as the best offensive lineman in the Class of 2025.  Here’s why he opted to go visit “The Shoe” before ultimately committing elsewhere.

“I felt it was only right to give them one more shot just to make sure I had made my decision and this was firm on where I wanted to be,” Sanders told Knoxville News Sentinel’s Mike Wilson.

With top-five recruits Devin Sanchez and Tavien St. Clair coming to Columbus next season, this roster is still going to be loaded, but having Sanders in the mix as well would’ve taken it to the next level.

Expect quite a bit more change up if Ryan Day is outed as the team’s head coach following the College Football Playoff.

Ohio State football singing day primer for the 2025 class

Getting you ready for what to expect Wednesday. #GoBucks

It’s officially known as the Early Signing Period, but has become known as signing day since things were opened up in December rather than the traditional Signing Day in the following February.

That’s because almost all of the big-time programs will put together the vast majority of their signing classes on the first day of the Early Signing Period, making the rest of the recruiting cycle a simple afterthought.

The Ohio State football program is expected to sign one of the best 2025 classes in the country and the hope is that there’s not too much drama as things unfold on Wednesday. To get you prepared, we thought we’d set the table for what to expect and then you can follow as each OSU target officially commits by sending in their national letters of intent.

Here’s what to expect from Ohio State football during signing day for the 2025 recruiting class.

Ohio State football expected signees (24)

5-star CB Devin Sanchez

5-star QB Tavien St. Claire

5-star CB Na’eem Offord

4-star LB Riley Pettijohn

4-star S Faheem Delane

4-star WR Quincy Porter

4-star OT Carter Lowe

4-star EDGE Zion Grady

4-star LB Tarvos Alford

4-star RB Bo Jackson

4-star TE Nate Roberts

4-star WR Phillip Bell

4-star DL Jarquez Carter

4-star WR Bodpegn Miller

4-star TE Brody Lennon

4-star WR De’zie Jones

4-star DL Maxwell Roy

4-star IOL Jayvon McFadden

4-star DL Trajen Odom

4-star S DeShawn Stewart

4-star IOL Jake Cook

3-star S Cody Haddad

3-star LB Eli Lee

3-star RB Isaiah West

3-star CB Jordyn Woods

Ohio State football potential flip(s)

5-star CB Na’eem Offord

The buzz is that Offord could flip from his verbal commitment to Ohio State and end up either at Oregon or Auburn. As of late, there’s a lot of buzz towards him landing with the Tigers, but we’ll stay on top of the situation.

Ohio State remaining target(s) undecided

4-star RB Anthony Rogers

Rogers, a former Alabama commit, is really the only Ohio State target out there that has yet to commit. He will choose between the Buckeyes and Georgia between 10 a.m. and Noon ET. The latest intel has him leaning with OSU. As soon as the commitment comes down, we’ll have the news and include it in our Ohio State football Signing Day tracker.

4-star DL Jahkeem Stewart

Ohio State is in the running for Stewart but the expectations are that he’ll choose the Big Ten but head out to the West Coast and sign with USC. If there’s a surprise, we’ll have it.

2025 Ohio State football class outlook

As it stands right now, Ohio State currently holds the No. 3 class for the 2025 cycle according to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings. Barring some major surprises, the Buckeyes will finish with a top-five class, probably a top-three class with an outside shot at landing the top class in the country.

These signing days always have a little drama associated with them, but Ohio State tends to not have as much as other programs because it tends to lock its commitments early and do a pretty good job of hanging on. The one to watch is Na’eem Offord who looks primed to flip to Auburn, then tune in to see if running back Anthony Rogers does indeed make a decision to wear the Scarlet and Gray.

We’ll have any major news as it happens.

BOOM! Ohio State football gets commitment from five-star quarterback

He’s a good one #GoBucks

After a deflating weekend, the Ohio State football team got a bit of good news on the recruiting front. The No. 2 rated quarterback in the class of 2027 has given his verbal pledge to be a Buckeye.

Brady Edmunds hails from Huntington Beach, California, but has been a lifelong Ohio State fan. After narrowing his choices to just four earlier this fall, Edmunds picked the Buckeyes over  Penn State, Michigan, and Texas.

Edmunds made an official visit to Ohio Stadium for the game between OSU and Michigan this past Saturday. Even though the outcome wasn’t what was hoped for, Ohio State impressed the five-star recruit enough to give his commitment shortly after the game.

Edmunds joins five-star receiver, Jamier Brown who committed to OSU during the Indiana game last week. It’s early and we know a lot can change in the next two years, but it seems like this kid is all in and has the opportunity to start inviting other top talent to join him.

Former Ohio State recruit commits to Coach Prime and Colorado

Heading to the Rocky Mountains #GoBucks

Well, that didn’t take long. We told you that four-star defensive end, London Merritt, who had been committed to Ohio State since March, pulled out of his verbal pledge just a few days ago. On Thanksgiving Day, we found out Merritt has now committed to the Colorado Buffaloes.

Merritt is a product of IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, and is the No. 13 rated edge rusher according to 247Sports composite ratings. The de-commitment leaves Ohio State with just one pass rusher in the class, Zion Grady, after Zahir Mathis pulled out of his pledge just a few days ago. Grady is rated as the No. 5 edge in the class.

It always stings to lose a recruit, but the Buckeyes still have an outstanding class in line for 2025 with hopefully a few more to add.

Defensive back visiting Ohio State this weekend

Defensive back visiting Ohio State this weekend #GoBucks

Ohio State football is still working on the 2025 recruiting class and an interesting prospect has scheduled a visit to Columbus, Ohio this weekend. Aydan West is a three-star cornerback from the state of Maryland, but is currently committed to become a Michigan State Spartan.

The Buckeyes are hoping to flip the commitment of the impressive athlete as he will be in attendance to watch a top five match-up as OSU will be playing the Indiana Hoosiers. West has been committed to Michigan State since June, but as we know recruiting can be fickle and that is even more true today with the emergence of NIL.

The Maryland product is still being recruited by a number of schools including Virginia Tech. This weekend will no doubt be a big one for Ohio State in regard to recruiting and swaying another talented corner to this class would be huge for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State football trying to hang on to 5-star recruit

Ohio State football may lose out on five-star recruit #GoBucks

Ohio State football always does well in regard to recruiting and that is especially true within the receiver room, but one committed receiver maybe looking to flip. Chris Henry Jr. is a five-star receiver in the class of 2026, who has been committed to be a Buckeye since 2023, but rumors are swirling that he may not be as locked in as he once was.

The California product recently took a visit to Eugene to see the Oregon Ducks in action and he apparently liked what he saw. The young star had very nice things to say about the coaching staff at Oregon, and considering it is currently the No. 1 ranked team in the country and already beat OSU earlier in the year, this should alarm some fans.

A consensus top five player in the class of 2026, Henry maybe committed to Ohio State, but there is plenty of time for the young man to reconsider. He has received offers from practically every school including SEC powerhouse, Texas.

Ohio State football recruit visiting campus for Purdue game

Ohio State football recruit visiting campus for Purdue game #GoBucks

The Ohio State football 2025 recruiting class is setting up to be a great one and the 2026 class — although still missing a few pieces — also looks promising. With the next two classes looking so bright it is not surprising to see the Buckeye coaching staff already working hard on the class of 2027.

Elijah Kimble is a running back from the state of New York in the class of 2027 and he has announced that he will be visiting Ohio State when it takes on the Purdue Boilermakers. The Buffalo product already has numerous offers including from The Team Up North. The Canisius High School star made a name for himself over the summer at a Michigan recruiting camp. He also holds an offer from the Oregon Ducks.

Recruiting nerds may already be familiar with Kimble as Canisius played Massillon in September and the absence of the star running back due to injury was evident as the Massillon won 41-7.

Ohio State football misses on 4-star recruit

Ohio State football misses on four-star recruit #GoBucks

Ohio State football has been working hard on the recruiting trail, but has fallen short in regard to the recruitment of one four-star stud. Mikkel Skinner is a four-star tight end from the state of South Carolina in the class of 2025 and narrowed his commitment decision down to four schools.

In addition to the Buckeyes, Skinner was considering, the Georgia Bulldogs, Kentucky Wildcats and the South Carolina Gamecocks. Although some thought OSU would be the choice, the future star announced his intentions to play for Kentucky.

Standing at 6-foot, 3-inches and 220 pounds, it is easy to see why so many schools view him as a potential star and missing out on this weapon does hurt the Ohio State recruiting class. The consensus top 15 tight end in the class mentioned the Wildcat coaching staff as a big reason for his commitment. One of the more obvious reasons he may not have chosen OSU though is he made it clear, he is interested in playing early, which was likely not going to happen in Columbus.

Four-star recruit announces Ohio State visit

Four-star recruit announces Ohio State visit #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team will kick off against the Nebraska Cornhuskers at noon on Saturday, and in addition to the Buckeyes looking to bounce back after a loss against the Oregon Ducks, this weekend is shaping up to be a huge recruiting event. Another major recruit in four-star wide receiver, Dakota Guerrant, has announced he will be visiting campus and OSU is very much in consideration for his potential landing spot.

Guerrant is a a consensus top ten receiver in the class of 2027 out of the state of Michigan and stands at 6-foot, 1-inch and 185 pounds with the frame to be much larger. Ohio State offered a scholarship to the future star back in September and the Buckeyes are competing with a wide range of schools for his services including places like Akron and Auburn.

Obviously, since he is only a sophomore in high school there is still time for him to rise up the recruiting board even further and add to the 25 offers he has already earned.
