Ohio State men’s hockey announces nonconference schedule

Ohio State hockey announced its nonconference schedule on Thursday. What do you think of it? #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s hockey team is reeling after a disappointing 2023-2024 season and will be looking to rebound this winter. There will be the usual slate of Big Ten games against teams like Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Notre Dame, but sometimes what the Buckeyes do outside the conference has a major impact on their prospects of making it to the postseason.

On that note, OSU’s nonconference schedule was announced on Thursday, it it sure looks one the Buckeyes should be able to have at least some modest success against.

Here’s a look at what the Scarlet and Gray are looking to face on the ice in the nonconference portion of the schedule:

2024-25 Ohio State Men’s Hockey Nonconference Schedule

Oct 6 vs. Niagara (exhibition)

Oct 11-12 vs. American International

Oct 25 vs. Bowling Green

Oct 26 at Bowling Green

Nov 1-2 vs. Lake Superior State

Nov 15-16 at Lindenwood

Nov 29-30 at Princeton

October may seem like a long way off, but you know how it works. The fall and winter will be here before you know it.

Ohio State men’s hockey knocked out of Big Ten Tournament by Michigan State

A great effort, but not quite enough. #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s hockey team had a nice little run into the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament. It began with an upset of No. 2 seed Wisconsin last weekend in a three game set, but it all ended today with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to No. 1 seed Michigan State up in East Lansing Saturday.

By virtue of the win in a one-game scenario, the Spartans will be moving on to the championship game, while OSU’s season will be over. It didn’t do enough during the season to have a crack at making the NCAA Tournament.

But it was close and the game could have gone either way.

The Spartans got on the board first after a scoreless first period, when they scored shortly into the second period for a 1-0 lead.

There was more than one review on goals that were either taken off the board or allowed to stand, and that was the case with an apparent second goal for Michigan State for a 2-0 lead. After review, however, it was determined that a MSU player was in the crease so the goal was taken away just a couple of minutes after the first tally.

The score remained 1-0 before the Buckeyes equalized early in the third period on a goal by Max Montes to even things at one goal a piece. Unfortunately, Michigan State answered just 13 seconds later to take a 2-1 lead. That goal was also challenged by Ohio State for a player in the crease, but it was upheld.

That wouldn’t be the end of the drama with reviews.

It appeared that OSU tied the score with a second goal with 15:38 left in the third period, but the Spartans challenged for offsides and the call was reversed, keeping Sparty up by one goal.

The Buckeyes would pull the goalie with under two minutes left in the game but Michigan State would hold on and send the scarlet and gray home empty handed.

The offseason will now begin for the Buckeyes after the team seemed to be playing its best hockey in the tournament. It just wasn’t quite enough.

Ohio State men’s hockey upsets No. 2 seed Wisconsin to advance in Big Ten Tournament

Big upset by the Bucks! Moving on … #GoBucks

It’s March and that means we’re all conditioned for upsets. But while that normally happens on the hardwood, we got a taste of March Madness on ice Sunday when Ohio State upset the No. 2 seed Wisconsin in the Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey tournament 3-1 on Sunday.

It really wasn’t that close either thanks to the Buckeyes getting the first three goals of the contest, the last of which an empty netter. OSU got on the board in the first period thanks to a David Burnside power play goal. It added to that in the second period when Scooter Brickey slid one past the goalie at even strength with 9:56 left.

That’s the way it would stay until late in the third period when the Badgers pulled their goalie for the extra-man advantage and yielded an empty netter to Burnside, his second tally of the contest to ice it at 3-0.

The win means Ohio State will be moving on to face No. 1 seed Michigan State in a one-game semifinal in East Lansing next weekend. Might as well keep the run going, right?

Ohio State men’s hockey falls to Wisconsin to force decisive Game 3

Off to a win and advance scenario. #GoBucks

After a stunning upset of No. 5/6 Wisconsin on Friday night 3-1, the Buckeyes fell to the Badgers 4-2 on Saturday to force a decisive Game 3 on Sunday in a quarterfinal matchup in the Big Ten tournament.

No. 7 seed Ohio State was tied with the No. 2 seed Badgers after the first period 1-1 with both teams lighting the lamp on the power play. Thomas Weis got one past the goalie with just 59 seconds left in the period for the Buckeyes.

Wisconsin would answer in the second period with two more goals to take a 3-1 lead before Ohio State pulled to within one midway through the third period (3-2) thanks to a Patrick Guzzo goal, but the Badgers would get an empty netter to finish off the scoring and send things to a Game 3 that will take place at 6 PM ET on Sunday.

Ohio State men’s hockey loses to Quinnipiac, knocked out of NCAA Tournament

A good run fell a wee-bit short. #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s hockey team fell just short of its goal to make another Frozen Four.

Despite outshooting Quinnipiac by about a 2:1 margin, the Buckeyes couldn’t get the high-quality chances it needed to get more than one goal into the back of the net, falling to the Bobcats by a 4-1 score.

It was tight throughout, with Ohio State getting on the board first with 9:25 left in the first period on a charging rush by Joe Dunlap. Unfortunately, Quinnipiac would score two quick goals in succession and within 15 seconds of each other with under seven minutes left later in the first period to quickly wrestle the lead back, 2-1.

And that’s the way it would stay all the way until late in the 3rd period despite several chances by Ohio State to get the equalizer. The Bobcats got a crucial goal on a rebound batted out of the air with just 4:10 left on the clock to stretch it to a two-goal lead. Coach Steve Rohlik then decided to pull the goalie for the man advantage but OSU couldn’t get light the lamp again and instead gave up an empty netter for the final 4-1 score.

It wasn’t exactly what Ohio State wanted this season, but it was still a good postseason run and one for the Buckeyes to be proud of.

Ohio State men’s hockey gets into NCAA Frozen Four field

The Ohio State men are in and bound for the Northeast. #GoBucks

Despite coming up short in the Men’s Hockey Big Ten Tournament, the Ohio State men’s hockey team isn’t done.

The men’s NCAA Frozen Four was announced on Sunday just after the OSU women fell to Wisconsin in the women’s national title game, and the Buckeyes — as expected — made the field.

Ohio State didn’t get a high seed but will be playing Harvard in the first round in Bridgeport, Connecticut, for the 16-team tournament. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m. on Friday with the Buckeyes playing the winner of No. 2 seed Quinnipiac and Merrimack.

The top four seeds for the tournament are Minnesota (1), Quinnipiac (2), Michigan (3), and Denver (4). Four Big Ten teams made the field with Penn State joining the Buckeyes, Wolverines, and Golden Gophers.

The first two rounds of the Frozen Four will take place at four regional sites from March 23 through the 26th, with the winner of each region advancing to the Frozen Four in Tampa, Florida, on April 6 and 8.

Ohio State men’s hockey receives No. 3 seed and first-round home ice for upcoming Big Ten Tournament

On to the postseason! #GoBucks

There was a lot that could happen this past weekend to shuffle the order of the teams in the Big Ten men’s ice hockey tournament, but we finally know where Ohio State will slot in.

And while the Buckeyes ran into a pretty stiff challenge on the road against No. 1 Minnesota, dropping both games over the weekend, they still earned a No. 3 seed and home ice for the first round of the tournament. Minnesota grabbed the No. 1 seed and Michigan the No. 2 seed.

Ohio State will host the No. 6 seeded Penn State Nittany Lions in a three-game series that will take place Friday, March 3, through Sunday, March 5 (game 3 if necessary) at the Schottenstein Center.

If Ohio State gets through round one, it’ll then faceoff against the winner of the series between No. 2 Michigan and No. 7 Wisconsin in a single-elimination game on Saturday, March 11.

Ticket information will be released in the upcoming days according to a statement from the Ohio State Department of Athletics.
