Lenzelle Smith, Jr joins Carmen’s Crew for upcoming TBT

Former Ohio State guard Lenzell Smith, Jr. is joining Carmen’s Crew for the upcoming TBT.

It looks like everything is moving forward with plans to play the $2 Million winner-take-all The Basketball Tournament this summer. We already know the defending champion Ohio State alumni team named Carmen’s Crew is planning to participate with some familiar names.

However, we also knew we were likely to hear about some new additions to this year’s team. And … as fate would have it, we got word of a new, yet familiar face Tuesday when Carmen’s Crew announced the addition of former Ohio State guard Lenzelle Smith, Jr.

Smith played under Thad Matta for Ohio State from 2010-2014 during a pretty good run. He was a part of the team that made the Elite Eight in 2013, and Final Four in 2012.

Smith will bring a transition game, toughness, and shooting touch to a team looking to defend its tournament championship from last season. His inclusion now means there will be seven former Buckeye players on the nine-man roster.

He has most recently been playing overseas in the Israeli League with Hapoel Eilat in 2018-19 and Hapoel Tel Aviv in 2019. This past season he averaged 12.3 points, 5.6 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals.

Carmen’s Crew is set to defend its title on the campus of Ohio State in the Covelli Center from July 23-26.

Ohio State baseball’s Dillon Dingler included in ESPN’s first-round mock MLB draft

ESPN released its revised 2020 MLB mock draft and has Ohio State catcher Dillon Dingler going in the first round.

The COVID-19 pandemic may have brought the sporting world to a screeching halt, but many of the professional leagues are still trying to forge ahead with their respective drafts. Major League Baseball is no different.

In fact, the 2020 MLB Draft is just two weeks away, and it’ll be one of the most unique in the league’s history. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel just released his revised first-round mock draft, and he has Ohio State’s catcher, Dillon Dingler, included.

Ohio State is not normally known for providing a ton of first-round baseball prospects, but he believes Dingler has an enormous upside and attributes that fit one particular organization’s needs.

Here’s what McDaniel says about Dingler, and where he’ll go in the first round.

Next … The scoop on Dillon Dingler

Ohio State baseball beats North Florida 10-2 to guarantee winning Florida trip

The Ohio State baseball team won its third straight game after taking down North Florida 10-2. Dillon Dingler homered three times.

It’s been a good trip to Florida for the Ohio State baseball team. After a shaky start to the season, the Buckeyes lost the first game to Stetson in DeLand Florida. After that though, OSU won the remaining two games there, then headed north today and beat North Florida 10-2 to guarantee a winning trip in the sunshine state. There’s still one to go tomorrow, but Ohio State has suddenly won three games in a row to improve its record to 6-7.

By far the star of the game today was captain and catcher Dillon Dingler. He mashed three home runs and had five RBIs to tally half of the scoring for the scarlet and gray. It’s the first time a Buckeye hit three home runs in one game since Noah McGowan did it at Xavier March 19, 2017.

The big inning that broke it open for Ohio State was a five-run sixth inning that gave OSU an 8-2 lead. There was a solo Dingler homer, but the Buckeyes also got runs on a run-scoring double by Zach Dezenzo, a wild pitch, and a two-run single by Nick Erwin.

Things were almost as equally impressive on the mound for OSU. Sophomore left-hander Mitch Milheim made his first start of the year and limited the Ospreys to just two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work. Freshman right-hander Wyatt Loncar took over for Milheim and struck out three batters in just 2.1 innings of work for his first career win.

The Buckeyes and Ospreys go at again to wrap up the Florida trip at 2:05 PM Wednesday.

Ohio State baseball bounces back, smokes Harvard 13-1

The Ohio State baseball team got a big bounce-back win against Harvard Saturday.

The Ohio State baseball team got a much-needed win on Saturday, crushing Harvard 13-1 and will look to win the weekend tomorrow.

It didn’t take long for the Buckeyes to get on the board. Connor Pohl slammed a two-run shot in the bottom of the 1st inning to open the scoring. More runs followed in the 2nd inning for Ohio State when the flood gates opened with five more runs. Nate Karaffa singled home two runs, followed by a two-run double by Dillon Dingler and another RBI single by Brent Todys, and just like that, the Buckeyes opened up a 7-0 advantage after just two innings of play.

Harvard would get its only run of the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning when it doubled home a run to make it 7-1. But this day would belong to the scarlet and gray.

The Buckeyes would plate six more runs with the big blow coming on a two-run homer by Dingler in the top of the 4th inning.

Meanwhile starting pitcher Garrett Burhenn had a career game on the mound. He pitched seven innings of five-hit, one-run ball — setting a career-best in strikeouts with thirteen.

With the win, Ohio State improves its record to 4-7 and will be back in action tomorrow against Fairfield at 7PM.

Ohio State baseball loses to Stetson 9-1

The Ohio State baseball team couldn’t hang with Stetson Friday night, losing 9-1 in DeLand, Florida.

The Ohio State baseball team took it on the chin Friday night, dropping the first game of the weekend series 9-1 to Stetson in DeLand, Florida.

The Buckeyes got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and seemed to have dodged a bullet with ace Seth Lonsway on the mound. In reality, it was just the beginning of more offensive opportunities for the Hatters.

Stetson struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning, plating two runs on two walks, a single, and a wild pitch. It got two more in the 3rd inning with Lonsway continuing to struggle with his command. He was lifted in the inning after giving up another single and a walk, but the damage was done with OSU down 4-0.

Ohio State’s only run came in the top of the 5th inning on a two-out rally. Matt Carpenter walked, then Mitchell Okuley lined one off the wall for an RBI triple to make the score 5-1. Unfortunately, that’s as close as the scarlet and gray would get, ultimately surrendering four more runs.

It has been a very disappointing start to the season to say the least for the Buckeyes. The loss drops Ohio State’s overall record to 3-7. It’ll try to get some momentum going on the season when it goes at it again tomorrow at Noon against Harvard.

Ohio State baseball drops rubber match against Lipscomb 4-2

The Ohio State baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision against Lipscomb to finish the series with one win and two losses.

The Ohio State baseball team was hoping to get a win on Sunday to make it a winning weekend in Nashville, but it wasn’t in the cards. Instead, the Buckeyes dropped a 4-2 decision to fall to 3-6 overall on the season.

The Bison got on the board first in the bottom of the 1st inning thanks to a sacrifice fly and led 1-0.

Things then remained scoreless for awhile until Ohio State’s Nick Erwin mashed a two-run homer in the top of 5th inning for a 2-1 lead. But Lipscomb grabbed the lead for good a couple of innings later in the bottom of the 7th on a squeeze and another sac fly to go up 3-2.

The Bison would add one more, and Ohio State could get nothing going on offense the rest of the way. That would be all she wrote.

Starting pitcher Griffan Smith had a solid outing on the mound, hurling six innings of six-hit ball — giving up just one earned run on five strikeouts. Unfortunately for him, the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead and the offense couldn’t crank it up anymore and he was left with a no-decision.

The Buckeyes will now try to turn momentum back around to the positive side of the ledger when it embarks on a three-game swing in DeLand, Florida next weekend. Friday it’ll play Stetson, followed by Harvard and Fairfield Saturday and Sunday.

Ohio Sate baseball gets win over Lipscomb to give Beals 300th win

The Ohio State baseball team put it on Lipscomb 11-6 to give coach Greg Beals his 300th win as the Buckeyes’ skipper.

The Ohio State baseball team got back in the winning column Friday night with an 11-6 win in Nashville over Lipscomb. With it, head coach Greg Beals notched his 300th career victory with Ohio State.

The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Lipscomb strung together four-straight hits with two outs to take a 3-0 lead.

The Buckeyes struck right back however in the top of the 4th inning, plating two runs on a couple of RBI singles by Mitchell Okuley and Marcus Ernst. Suddenly a quick answer made it 3-2 Bison.

After holding Lipscomb scoreless in the bottom of the 4th, the Buckeyes struck again in the top of the 5th inning. Scottie Seymour singled home the tying run with two outs, then Nate Karaffa hit got a big two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded to give the Buckeyes a 5-3 advantage.

The offense exploded in the 6th inning with five more runs, highlighted by a three-run shot by Karaffa to blow things wide open 10-3. Meanwhile, on the bump, Garrett Burhenn settled in, allowing just the one major blip in the 3rd inning, and finishing with nine hits, four earned runs, and a career-high nine strikeouts to get the win.

OSU added one more run in the top of the eighth on a Zach Dezenzo RBI single, and the Bison got one run in the 7th and two more in the 9th to finish up the scoring and give Ohio State the win.

The Buckeyes improved their record to 3-4 and will be back at it again against Lipscomb at 3:00 PM. Ohio State ace Seth Lonsway gets the start.

Ohio State baseball drops second in a row to Georgia Tech

The Ohio State baseball team lost game two of a three-game series against Georgia Tech because of defensive miscues.

The Ohio State baseball team is having a rough start to the season. To be fair, it’s had some pretty tough competition, but after a 5-2 loss to a No. 21 ranked Georgia Tech because of some defensive miscues, the Buckeyes record now stands at 2-3.

Ohio State did strike first when a groundout sacrifice score the first run of the game in the top of the 2nd inning. Things stayed that way until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Buckeyes gave the Yellow Jackets some help. With the bases loaded and two outs, OSU misplayed a line drive to center for an error and two unearned runs. A wild pitch then followed before Ohio State got out of the inning down 3-1.

Tech then got another run in the bottom of the 5th inning on a two-out single to make it a 4-1 ball game. Ohio State got one back on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 7th, followed by another unearned run from the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the inning to cap off the scoring.

Starting pitcher Seth Lonsway had a decent day on the mound, giving up just one earned run on three hits in 5.0 innings of work. He struck out twelve batters but was doomed by his defense.

Ohio State will now try to salvage one game of the three-game series when it plays Georgia Tech again Sunday at 1 PM. Griffan Smith will be on the mound for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State baseball beats Indiana State in ten innings

The Ohio State baseball team had a flair for the dramatic Sunday, needing ten innings to dispose of Indiana State.

The Ohio State baseball team didn’t get off to the start it wanted this year — dropping the first game of the opening weekend, but it made up for it with two-straight wins to elevate its record to 2-1.

The latest of the pair came on a ten-inning 10-6 win over the Indiana State Sycamores in Port Charlotte, Florida Sunday.

The Buckeyes struck first in the top of the 1st inning when Connor Pohl singled to drive in a run for a 1-0 lead. OSU threatened in the inning but left runners on the corner. The Buckeyes were able to add another run, but the Sycamores closed to 2-1 after a solo homer in the 3rd inning.

Ohio State answered right back in the top of the 4th inning to regain the two-run advantage when Brent Todys hit a flare to single in another run. But that’s when defensive miscues cost the Buckeyes.

Indiana State was able to plate three unearned runs on two errors by the OSU fielders in the bottom of the 6th inning and just like that, Ohio State founds itself down 4-3 with just three innings to go.

But the Buckeyes weren’t done. Nolan Clegg tied it at four runs apiece in the top of the eighth with a solo shot, followed by two more runs on three hits, and OSU looked prime for the win up 6-4. However, the Sycamores got two-runs on three hits and an error and it was off to extra innings with the game knotted at 6-6.

That’s when Pohl stepped up again to be the hero. With the bases loaded, he drove the ball into left-center to clear the bases and put the Buckeyes up by three. They would get one more, and that’s all Bayden Root would need to nail down the 10-6 victory.

The Buckeyes will next head to Atlanta for a three-game set against Georgia Tech next weekend.

The Ohio State baseball team gets its first win of the season over Pittsburgh

The Ohio State baseball team used dominating pitching to pick up its first win of the season 4-1 over Pittsburgh.

After dropping its season opener, the Ohio State baseball team rebounded for its first victory of the year, 4-1 over Pittsburgh thanks to a dominating performance from starting pitcher Seth Lonsway.

The right-hander made it difficult for the Panthers’ bats to get any kind of offense going. He had a shaky first inning — giving up one run — but he settled down from there. All told, he threw six innings of one-hit ball — striking out twelve hitters along the way to earn the win. Bayden Root came on in relief and pitched another strong three innings. He struck out six and allowed just one hit to nail things down.

There wasn’t a ton of offense for the Buckeyes, but enough to get the job done. After Pittsburgh plated a run on a couple of walks and a two-out RBI single in the top of the first, Ohio State answered. It got a big ground out RBI from Brent Todys after Nate Karaffa and Dillon Dingler both had hits.

The Buckeyes then took the lead for good in the 4th on back-to-back doubles by Connor Pohl and Zach Dezenzo to make it 2-1. Ohio State loaded the bases then but couldn’t plate any more runs in the inning.

It did get two insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning though and that would be more than enough.

With the win, Ohio State improves to 1-1 on the young season and will take on Indiana State at 11:30 AM Sunday.
