Matt Carpenter, Dillon Dingler named Ohio State baseball captains for 2020

Ohio State baseball chose its captains for the 2020 season. Both Matt Carpenter and Dillon Dingler will lead the team.

In preparation for the college baseball season that’s set to open up in about three weeks, the Ohio State baseball team has named its 2020 team captains. Both infielder Matt Carpenter and catcher Dillon Dingler were chosen by their teammates last week.

“Both Carp and Ding have the pulse of the locker room,” said coach Greg Beals. “They each have a great feel for the game and they know how to win. Both are well-deserving of their roles as captain.”

Both are upper-classmen. As a fifth-year senior, Carpenter has already appeared in 67 games, including starting 41 one season ago. He batted .257 last year with eight doubles, two triples, 25 runs scored, and 15 RBIs. He is a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.

Dingler was selected as a captain as a sophomore last year as well. He was named Second-Team All-Big Ten and was named to the All-Big Ten Tournament Team last year. He has appeared in 102 games with 88 total starts. In two seasons, he has accumulated 17 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 62 runs scored, and 36 RBIs. He is a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a 2019 Academic-All Big Ten Selection.

The team should be in good hands with this duo leading the team in 2020.

Ohio State baseball pitcher Seth Lonsway named second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball

Ohio State pitcher Seth Lonsway had been named a preseason Second-Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

We’re just a few weeks away from the start of college baseball season, and Ohio State is expected to field a very competitive team in 2020. It’s already been ranked No. 24 in the preseason by Baseball America, and is expected to contend for a Big Ten Championship.

Part of the reason why the expectations are high is because of starting pitcher Seth Lonsway. The redshirt sophomore left-hander had a fantastic year in 2019. He was named a First Team Freshman All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings, and Second Team Freshman All-American by Baseball America and the NCBWA.

Lonsway was also a Third Team All-Big Ten selection and a member of the Big Ten All-Freshman and All-Tournament Team. He led the Buckeyes with eight wins in 2019, going 8-4 with a 3.70 ERA.

He led all Division I freshman with 126 strikeouts, and led all Big-Ten pitchers by striking out 71 batters in conference play.

Now, he’ll be leaned on as the ace of an Ohio State pitching staff that hopes to lead its team to a Big Ten title and another appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Ohio State opens its season on February 14 in Port Charlotte, Florida against St. Joseph’s.

Ohio State baseball ranked No. 24 in preseason Baseball America Poll

The Ohio State baseball team checks in at No. 24 in Baseball America’s preseason top 25 college baseball poll.

You might still be scraping windshields and slipping on ice, but baseball will be here before you know it. In fact, with the Ohio State baseball team making annual stops in warmer locations to get a jump on the season, the Buckeyes will begin the season in just a little over three weeks’ time.

So yeah, it’s approaching fast. So much so that Baseball America has come out with its preseason college baseball rankings, and Ohio State has made it just inside the top 25 and No. 24.

As usual, there’s not too much respect for the Big Ten. Michigan is the only other conference team ranked — albeit pretty high at No. 8.

In case you are planning on making the trip south to get out of late winter/early spring’s chill, you can plan ahead and know that the Buckeyes are set to take part in the annual Snowbird Baseball Classic from February 14-16 in Port Charlotte, FL.
