Ohio team wins football game on last-second hook-and-ladder

Westerville Central trailed by three in the final seconds, but they pulled out a hook-and-ladder to score a touchdown of about 7 yards to win.

Friday was the night of trick-play game-winners in the world of high school football.

In a four-overtime game in Georgia, Loganville High School went for a bewildering over-the-head pass that somehow worked and won the game. Meanwhile, about 600 miles north, Westerville Central High School in Ohio was performing its own trick play in regulation.

Trailing by three with 5.1 seconds left on the clock and standing more than  70 yards away from the end zone, Westerville Central couldn’t play for an overtime battle against Westerville North. They had to go for it all on the last second. Instead of a Hail Mary, the Warhawks called upon the hook-and-ladder play.

It worked to perfection. According to the Columbus Dispatch, senior wide receiver Jacob Harris caught the ball around the 42-yard line and lateraled it to senior receiver Kobi Davis. Davis had room to operate and put on a burst of speed to get by the closest defender, who had paused briefly when it looked like Harris was getting tackled.

Davis outpaced all the defenders for a touchdown of about 73 yards to call game. Final score: 23-20.

Westerville Central is in the winner’s category after going just 2-9 last season. They’ll look to carry the momentum forward better than last season, when the team opened with a similarly close 17-14 victory over Westerville North but lost the next seven games. If anything can get a team rolling, it’s a hook-and-ladder to win the game.

Ohio vs Bowling Green Game Preview

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The Bowling Green offense isn’t exactly lighting it up, but it was able to beat Buffalo by running well, the passing game was solid before crashing the last two weeks, and it all needs time to operate – and it’ll get it.

Ohio’s defense does absolutely nothing in the backfield on a regular basis.

The lack of pressure generally means a lack of forced mistakes. The Bobcat defense doesn’t come up with enough takeaways to matter, and for all of its problems, the Bowling Green offense hasn’t been all that bad at ball security – at least lately.

The Falcons have turned it over just twice in the last two games, and they’re 3-2 when forcing multiple takeaways. But …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio has turned it over more than once in just one of its last seven games.

It took way too long to get here, but the team is playing a whole lot better over the second half of the season. The Toledo loss last week hurt, but before that the previous five games were all decided by eight points or fewer.

The passing game has been good, the offense has been balanced, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Bowling Green will put up a good fight – again, Ohio games are close – but there isn’t enough of a downfield passing game to make a difference, and the O will stall way too often.

After the way the season started, 4-8 won’t seem so awful for the Bobcats.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Toledo vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

Toledo is bowl eligible with a win and would keep MAC East hopes alive – at least for a day.

The Rockets are rolling offensively with close to 1,200 yards of total O over the last two weeks, rolling up an almost perfect balance to beat Bowling Green last week.

The running game has been terrific all year, the offense is playing the best it has all season, and the defense continues to be the best in the league even after getting ripped up by Eastern Michigan a few weeks ago.

Ohio needs to be perfect to win this, but it doesn’t force turnovers, and Toledo leads the nation in fewest giveaways, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio has finally turned it on, but it’s too late.

The team couldn’t win close games, ensured a losing season, and then it rocked back with two nice wins over Miami University and Eastern Michigan with an improved passing game and a big ground attack that’s cranking up enough big plays to matter.

For all of the positives with Toledo, it’s 5-5 for a reason.

Either the running game stalls, or the pass defense crashes in a loss to Eastern Michigan, or the run defense doesn’t work against Northern Illinois – there are too many issues.

The O line allows too many plays in the backfield, there are a bazillion penalties, and it’s a struggle to keep the chains moving. Ohio has to run well, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Toledo run defense has been terrific – for the most part.

Can the Rockets finally come up with a little bit of consistency? It hasn’t been easy to win close games, but four of the five losses were by three points or fewer.

Ohio is playing strong, though, and it’ll come up with one more big performance as it finishes up with a nice thorn-in-the-side win at home.

Ohio vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

Has Ohio finally figured it out?

It’s a lost season for a totally underwhelming team, but it pushed Central Michigan, Buffalo, and Kent State hard before finally breaking through with a win over Miami University.

The team is still playing hard, the passing game is finally starting to work, and the defense …

The defense is along for the ride, and it was able to hold up just enough late last week.

Eastern Michigan’s defense doesn’t do much of anything against the run, there isn’t enough pressure in the backfield, and the offensive line isn’t anything special. The Bobcats should be able to hold up on the offensive front and control the tempo a wee bit, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Ohio’s defense doesn’t hold up against anyone.

It got bombed on by Miami University, it got ran on by Kent State, and it’s been way too inconsistent overall and bad at getting off the field. Eastern Michigan’s offense isn’t consistent and it can’t run, but it owns third downs with a passing attack that kicked it all into high gear.

Ben Bryant is turning into the best quarterback in the MAC – or at least in the discussion – with his third 300-yard day in five games. He’s been accurate, he’s hitting the deep passes, and the passing game should roll at will on an Ohio defense that doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush.

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Michigan has already secured bowl eligibility, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

A whole slew of MAC teams will get to six wins and there won’t be enough spots. The Eagles have to keep picking up wins all while staying alive in the MAC West race.

Nothing Eastern Michigan ever does it all that easy, and the defense will give up enough points to make the offensive side keep having to work, but the Eagles will make it three straight wins with yet another impressive performance from the passing game.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Miami University vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

The RedHawks are on a roll – and just in time.

They’re deep in the mix for the MAC East title – it’s relatively smooth sailing until what should be the game for the division at Kent State to close out the regular season – and they’ve figured out how to win good battles.

They’re on a run of three wins in the last four games, the passing game has been consistent, and they’re getting enough from the defensive and the offensive front to overcome a few problems.

They don’t turn the ball over, they hit the big pass plays, and they’re able to control games with their style, even though they don’t dominate the time of possession battle.

Ohio turns the ball over a tun, the defense has been a mess – especially against the run – and there won’t be enough of a pass rush to matter.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio has played a whole lot better than its 1-7 record.

It might be one of the top under-the-radar disappointments of 2021, but they’re still battling hard. Ever since beating Akron, they’ve suffered gut punch after gut punch in three straight tough losses.

The offense, though, is doing a nice job. It’s not consistent in nay way, but Miami doesn’t have the type of offense that’s going to come out and put 50 on the board. The Bobcats should be able to keep this close throughout, if not take over if the ground attack is working.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Miami keep Ohio from throwing well?

The RedHawks aren’t allowing anything on the ground over the last month, and Ohio is coming off a 308-yard passing day from Kurtis Rourke.

Miami keeps playing tight games and finds ways to win. Ohio keeps playing tight games and manages to lose. That’s about to flip in Athens in a quirky Tuesday night game.
