Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was awarded the NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award at Saturday’s NFL Honors.

Not many anticipated Herbert earning the award, let alone having the type of season that he did, which included multiple broken records.

After being forced to start in Week 2 against the Chiefs, Herbert took the driver’s seat and it was all gas, no breaks for the former No. 6 overall selection.

Herbert set rookie records for total touchdowns (36), passing touchdowns (31), completions (396), multi-passing touchdown games (10), games with eight 300 yards passing and six three-passing touchdown games. He was just 39 yards short of Andrew Luck’s rookie record of 4,374 yards passing.

Relive every touchdown from Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert’s sensational rookie season.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert played his way into being named the NFL’s top offensive rookie from the 2020 season.

Herbert’s outstanding campaign was a bit unexpected. It all began after being called upon to start just five minutes before the Week 2 matchup against the Chiefs due to QB Tyrod Taylor’s medical emergency.

Herbert was able to put together quite the performance with 302 passing yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

Little did we know the game was only just a glimpse of greatness. Herbert went on to throw for over 4,300 yards and totaled 36 touchdowns, the most by any rookie in NFL history.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert named AP Offensive Rookie of the Year

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert beat out Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson for the prestigious award.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert capped off a fascinating debut campaign by nabbing the 2020 Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award at Saturday’s NFL Honors ceremony.

Even though Los Angeles’ season resulted in a 7-9 record, the No. 6 pick in the 2020 NFL draft gave a reason to optimistic for the future, setting numerous records during his first professional season.

Herbert set NFL single-season records for the most passing touchdowns by a rookie quarterback (31) and most total touchdowns by a rookie quarterback (36). He posted the most completions (396) and second-most passing yards (4,336) by a rookie quarterback in NFL history

In addition, Herbert posted eight games with at least 300 passing yards, surpassing Andrew Luck (six games in 2012) for the most 300-yard passing games by a rookie quarterback in league history.

This all came after Herbert was asked to come in to start Week 2 against the Chiefs after a medical emergency five minutes to QB Tyrod Taylor before the game started. It was then when a star was born.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert talks preparation to learn another offense

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is not phased that he will have to be under a new system.

Being under new offensive systems isn’t anything new to Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.

During his time at Oregon, Herbert played under three different head coaches since his freshman season.

After Brandon Staley replaced Anthony Lynn, it’ll mark his fifth head coach.

Even though he’s used to it at this point, Herbert hopes that the constant changes stop occurring while noting a positive that comes from having to master a new system.

“I’ve been through this before. It would be great to have one playbook throughout your career but it’s not going to always happen like that,” Herbert said, per the Associated Press’ Joe Reedy. “I think it’s a great opportunity to learn. You always learn from each playbook.

I think you have a great understanding of the game of football the more you go through it. I’ve had the opportunity to learn from so many different guys and philosophies and I think that’s helped my game. Hopefully, this is the last change that I’ll go through because I really believe in those two guys.”

Not every quarterback is capable of doing it, but Herbert has been able to due to his high football IQ.

It’s likely that the Chargers will be diligent about how they go about the process. Some of the concepts from last season will probably carry over to help with the learning curve, similar to how the coaching staff went about it in 2020.

In the meantime, Herbert said he has started watch film of the Saints because Joe Lombardi, the team’s new offensive coordinator, was their quarterbacks coach in New Orleans.

Herbert also noted that the transition might be easier because John Beck, the person he trains with in Huntington Beach, CA, has worked with former Saints QB Drew Brees in the past.

Herbert is currently the front-runner to win AP Offensive Rookie of the Year after finishing a phenomenal campaign which included rookie passing records for touchdowns (31) and the second-most passing yards at 4,336.

Chasing history: What’s on the line for Chargers QB Justin Herbert?

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is on his way to breaking more records.

What rookie quarterback Justin Herbert is doing this season is like none other, breaking records on a weekly basis and giving fans reason for optimism for years to come.

This past week, Herbert earned his eighth NFL Rookie of the Week honor for his performance against the Raiders, tying the record for most honors through eleven weeks of the season with Ben Roethlisberger.

If Herbert can be named Rookie of the Week twice in the final two games, he will pass Roethlisberger’s all-time mark (9).

However, there’s a lot more notable accomplishments that the rookie can achieve in Weeks 16 and 17.

Herbert just needs one more passing touchdown to own the all-time rookie mark for passing touchdowns thrown (28), which can be done this Sunday against the Broncos.

Herbert is also inching closer to most passing completions in a single season, which is held by Carson Wentz (379). He also has a chance at Andrew Luck’s record for most passing yards in a rookie season (4,374).

Herbert has completed 353 of his 531 passes (66.48%) for 3,781 yards, 27 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. He also has four rushing touchdowns.

Herbert is the current favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year at -800, per BetMGM. Vikings’ Justin Jefferson is second at +500 and Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa is third at +5000.

Does Steelers’ Chase Claypool have a shot at OROY?

Claypool has some tough competition to surpass for offensive ROY honors.

As impressive of a season that Steelers rookie receiver Chase Claypool is enjoying, it’s not likely he’ll be the recipient of the coveted Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. But there are still six weeks left in the regular season, and, as we’ve seen, anything can happen in 2020.

With 581 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns, Claypool has exceeded even the Steelers’ expectations. In Week 5, Chase was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his four-touchdown performance versus the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dating back to the year 2000, though, only three wide receivers had the distinction of OROY (Anquan Boldin, 2003; Percy Harvin, 2009; Odell Beckham Jr., 2014).

Until Sunday, it was a foregone conclusion that OROY would be going to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Now that Burrow is out for the season, it’s hard to imagine he’ll get enough votes.

Here’s a look at the top rookie talent that Megatron is up against.

Tua Tagovailoa’s odds increase to win Offensive Rookie of the Year on BetMGM

Former Alabama quarterback tua tagovailoa has increased odds to win the 2020 offensive rookie if the year on BetMGM.

Tua tagovailoa is in his first season in the NFL, after being drafted by the Miami Dolphins with the No. 5 selection in the 2020 draft.

As he gets ready for his second career start, following a Week 8 win against the Los Angeles Rams, it may be time to wonder where the Alabama football product stands in the race for the 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year.

On BetMGM, Tagovailoa currently resides within the top five.

Despite only appearing in two games, and starting one, Tagovailoa holds high odds for the awards, and it seems that they can only go up, assuming he plays how he did under Nick Saban.

Here’s how the top five looks before NFL’s Week 9 slate of games:

  1. Justin Herbert +100
  2. Joe Burrow +130
  3. Justin Jefferson +1400
  4. Chase Claypool +1800
  5. Tua Tagovailoa +2000

Midseason 2020 NFL All-Rookie Team: Chargers QB Justin Herbert remains on top

Both Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow have been playing great football.

The Offensive Rookie of the Year award has been a tight race between quarterbacks Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow.

You can make an argument for both signal-callers, but like myself, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler believes that Herbert’s play at the halfway point of the 2020 season is deserving of it.

Despite attempting 68 fewer passes, Herbert has more passing touchdowns (15) than Burrow (11), holding the edge in completion percentage (67.4) and passing yards per game (303.3). He has also been more impressive when it comes to pushing the ball downfield, accounting for 23 passing plays of 20-plus yards, compared to 20 for Burrow. With his three touchdown passes against Denver on Sunday, Herbert joined Deshaun Watson as the only rookie quarterbacks in NFL history with three-plus touchdown passes in four straight games.

Even though Herbert’s record as starting quarterback might not be appealing, he’s been the primary reason why Los Angeles has been able to stay competitive and have huge leads in all of their games. Unfortunately, the other side of the ball has let him down.

The former Oregon product is completing 67.4% of his passes, throwing for 1,820 yards and 15 touchdown passes and 5 interceptions this season. While Burrow is on pace to break Andrew Luck’s rookie passing yards record (4,374), Herbert has two less games under his belt.

The bottom line is that it’s going to be close, but it will be fun to watch how the rest of the season unfolds for both Herbert and Burrow. Either way, the future appears to be bright for both quarterbacks.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert named Offensive Rookie of the Month

After a historic month, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has earned the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Month award for October.

After a historic month, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has earned the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Month award for October.

Los Angeles turned to Herbert in Week 2 after Tyrod Taylor suffered a punctured lung, and there was no turning back after he displayed a string of strong performances, eventually being named the permanent starter.

After being handed the keys, Herbert was 67-of-102 passing for 901 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception over the team’s last three games.

Herbert picked up his first professional win last Sunday against the Jaguars. In that matchup, he threw for a season-high 347 yards and 66 rushing yards.

The former Oregon product has shredded defenses with eye-popping throws to all parts of the field and his legs, all while being composed in any given situation.

The first-round pick is currently the slight favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year over Bengals QB Joe Burrow, per Odds Shark.
