Social media reacts to Chargers QB Justin Herbert’s season-ending injury news

The general population reacted to the news that Justin Herbert will miss the rest of the season.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert would be out with a fractured right finger for the remainder of the season.

Even though Los Angeles is not trending toward making the playoffs, it’s tough to know that Herbert will miss time with an injury that was a result of poor protection, which has been an issue all season.

The Bolts will turn to Easton Stick to start at quarterback for the rest of the 2023 season.

Here is how social media reacted after it was announced that Herbert will have season-ending surgery.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert not expected to play vs. Raiders

Justin Herbert will consult with Dr. Steven Shin to determine the extent of the injury and how much time he will miss.

Quarterback Justin Herbert sustained a fracture in the index finger of his throwing hand on Sunday against the Broncos.

As a result, he is not expected to play Thursday night against the Raiders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter added that Herbert will consult with Dr. Steven Shin to determine the extent of the injury and how much time he will miss.

Herbert suffered the injury from being hit by Broncos defensive lineman Zach Allen in the second quarter.

When Herbert left the game, backup Easton Stick took over for the remainder of the second quarter and the entire second half.

Stick completed 13 of 24 passes for 179 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked twice and fumbled twice.

With Herbert set to be sidelined, Stick will be the starter against Las Vegas. Brandon Staley said that rookie Max Duggan will be the backup.

As for Herbert’s status, it would be wise for the team to keep him out of live-game action for the rest of the 2023 season.

Sitting at 5-8 and essentially out of playoff contention, Los Angeles has nothing to play for, and there’s no point in throwing Herbert out there when he’s suffered injuries to both hands.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert sets another milestone

Justin Herbert broke Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning’s record.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Justin Herbert broke another NFL record.

In the Chargers’ game against the Lions, Herbert set the record for most passing yards by a player through his first four seasons, passing Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. He now sits at 16,438 yards.

Despite the loss, Herbert was phenomenal and it was arguably the best performance this season and was one of his better showings of his professional career.

Herbert completed 27 of 40 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns. It was the fourth time he had a game with four touchdown passes.

The offensive line played a big role in ensuring that Herbert was kept clean, but even when he was pressured, he did a great job of diagnosing it, maneuvering the pocket and getting out on the run when needed.

Herbert threw a handful of eyebrow-raising throws, something that fans are used to but hadn’t seen much of in recent weeks.

No excuses from Chargers QB Justin Herbert in loss to Cowboys: ‘That was on me’

After the Chargers’ loss to the Cowboys, Justin Herbert owned up to his struggles.

More often than not, Justin Herbert has shined under the lights in prime time. However, it was not his night in the Chargers’ loss to the Cowboys on Monday.

Herbert has been lauded for his ability to make dazzling throws, but he missed a few, including two to Keenan Allen, that would’ve put Los Angeles in a good position.

The first came right before the half when Herbert misfired to a wide-open Allen down the left sideline. He airmailed it and the ball ended up going out of bounds. A completion would’ve put them in field goal range to tie the game at 10 apiece.

The second missed opportunity came near the start of the fourth quarter. Allen ran a silky smooth out-and-up that put Cowboys cornerback Daron Bland on skates. It resulted in Herbert overthrowing Allen. Had he completed the pass, Allen would’ve likely been in the end zone.

“Keenan ran two great routes and that’s on me as a quarterback,” Herbert said. “We had those explosive opportunities. We have to capitalize on those. That’s on me as a quarterback.”

Herbert finished with 22-of-37 passing for 227 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. His passer rating was 84.0, his second-lowest mark of the season.

Dallas had a 47.6% pressure rate on Herbert, the highest against Herbert this season. It definitely factored into how he played, as Herbert looked uncomfortable and forced many throws, including his interception to Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore that sealed the game.

“I missed a couple receivers, threw some bad passes,” Herbert said. “A lot left out there … so there’s a lot to work on and improve on.”

Chargers make Justin Herbert highest-paid quarterback in NFL

Justin Herbert is deserving of every single penny.

The Chargers and Justin Herbert have agreed to a five-year deal worth $262.5 million, making him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

Herbert surpasses Ravens QB Lamar Jackson’s previous extension of five years worth $260 million.

Herbert has been nothing short of outstanding in his first three seasons with the Bolts, throwing for 14,089 yards, 94 touchdowns and 35 interceptions and shattering various records along the way.

Last season, Herbert battled fractured rib cartilage and a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, other key players on the offense dealt with injuries and they did not have a speed option, which limited him from uncorking it.

Herbert has yet to fully unlock what makes him such a great player: his immense arm strength and talent. Insert offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and wide receiver Quentin Johnston.

Moore’s system is the recipe to success for Herbert, and so is the return of all key members on the offensive side of the ball, including left tackle Rashawn Slater and the addition of Johnston.

If he can stay healthy, the Chargers have the potential to make deep runs for years to come.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert’s early MVP odds are very promising

Oddsmakers believe Chargers QB Justin Herbert has what it takes to win the MVP award in 2023.

Oddsmakers believe Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has a good shot to win the MVP award in 2023.

Herbert has the fourth-highest MVP odds at +1000; a $100 bet would win $1,000. The former Oregon product is right below Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes (+650), Bengals (+650), and Bills’ Josh Allen (+800), per DraftKings Sportsbook.

Herbert finished second in passing yards (4,739) and third in completion percentage (68.2%) in 2022.

This past season, Herbert dealt with fractured rib cartilage and a torn labrum in his non-throwing arm that kept him from playing at the level of his first two seasons.

Other factors are key players on offense had their respective injuries. Additionally, former offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi’s system was vanilla and kept most of Herbert’s throws short and underneath.

But the Chargers are hopeful new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s system will do wonders for Herbert, who has yet to fully unlock what makes him such a great player: his immense arm strength and talent.

The middle to deep passing game should improve. While Moore was the Cowboys offensive coordinator, they had the seventh-highest average depth of target in the NFL (8.3 air yards per attempt).

Furthermore, on the move is when Herbert is at his best. And Moore utilized a lot of quarterback movement. In 2019, 2021, and 2022, Dak Prescott had the ninth-most dropbacks where he was rolling right or left or scrambling right or left to throw.

If the Chargers tinker with the personnel by getting a complete tight end and a speedy wide receiver in the draft and Moore’s system proves to play to Herbert’s strengths this upcoming season, he could very well be a strong candidate to hoist the MVP trophy.

Chargers’ Kellen Moore very eager to work with Justin Herbert

The Chargers are banking on Kellen Moore to unlock Justin Herbert’s full potential.

While searching for their new offensive coordinator, the Chargers’ main priority was finding someone who would be able to get the most out of quarterback Justin Herbert. And it is Kellen More who they are banking on.

Moore heaped high praise on Herbert at his introductory media availability, highlighting what he’s seen from him on the field.

“Justin, we know the physical talent,” Moore said about Herbert. “He obviously does a tremendous job.

I think it’s been really cool to watch him, from a fundamental perspective, as he’s gone from Oregon into the NFL and transitioned, and started playing under center — he has done such a phenomenal job of that — and the play-action game, the movement game. We know his ability to throw it down the field.”

Moore will also be responsible for fixing one of the least efficient rushing offenses of this past season. But his bigger responsibility will be putting the Chargers’ most valuable player in a position to succeed.

“I’m just really, really excited to be able to work with him and, hopefully, help him in some way as he continues to build the career that he is going to have,” Moore said.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert undergoes surgery to repair torn labrum

Chargers QB Justin Herbert had surgery last Wednesday.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had surgery last Wednesday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the team announced Sunday.

Herbert is expected to be fully cleared for participation in off-season activities this spring.

It’s unclear when Herbert suffered the injury. But he first appeared on the injury report with a left shoulder after Los Angeles’ Week 17 matchup with the Rams.

Herbert had played most of this season with fractured rib cartilage that he suffered in Week 2 against the Chiefs. He finished the season with 4,739 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and ten interceptions.

Herbert was selected as an alternate for the AFC in the 2023 NFL Pro Bowl Games but will be unable to participate due to the procedure.

Twitter reacts to Chargers firing offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi

Here’s how the internet reacted to the Chargers firing Joe Lombardi.

The Chargers made a notable coaching change, firing offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi on Tuesday. Additionally, passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Shane Day was relieved of his duties.

The move was expected, as Los Angeles did not get the most out of quarterback Justin Herbert’s special abilities, given Lombardi’s offensive system predicated on quick and underneath throws.

The Chargers were also lackluster in the run game, red zone and on third down.

Now, head coach Brandon Staley will be looking for a new offensive coordinator as he heads into Year 3 of his regime.

Let’s see how Twitter reacted to the Lombardi news.
