Giants vs. Cowboys: 3 reasons for concern in Week 12

The New York Giants square off in a Thursday afternoon battle against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 12. Here are three reasons for concern.

The New York Giants enter Week 12 fresh off Sunday’s loss against the Detroit Lions. Big Blue will take on their division rival Dallas Cowboys on a short week playing on Thanksgiving for the first time since 2017.

This is the second time this season the Giants will go up against the Cowboys and the first time around didn’t go well at MetLife stadium in Week 3 as the Cowboys handed the Giants the first loss of the season.

The Giants come into the Thanksgiving matchup as heavy underdogs, hoping to get revenge for Week 3.

The Giants’ Week 11 matchup against the Lions was costly as they lost two key players in Adoree Jackson and Wan’Dale Robinson. They will have to get a gameplan together without Jackson and Robinson in a hurry this week with the short turnaround.

Coming away with a win Thursday will not come easy as the Cowboys are believed to be the better team and the Giants are heavily decimated by injury.

Here are three causes for concern going into Week 12.

Report: Odell Beckham Jr. will visit Giants after Thanksgiving

Is a reunion near? Free agent WR Odell Beckham Jr. will make an official visit with the New York Giants after Thanksgiving.

[mm-video type=video id=01gh9pjkshp9tjsm9xdb playlist_id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01gh9pjkshp9tjsm9xdb/01gh9pjkshp9tjsm9xdb-ca89fb4a433403c3aca73f8615770a4d.jpg]The hunt for free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. appears to be down to two teams: The New York Giants and their rivals, the Dallas Cowboys.

Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network report that Beckham will visit both the Giants and Cowboys following their Week 12 game, which will be played on Thanksgiving day.

The Cowboys and Giants have emerged as two of the favorites to sign free-agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who plans to visit both NFC East rivals after this week’s Thanksgiving holiday, per sources.

These are the only known visits scheduled for Beckham, though he could take others before making a decision on where to sign.

Beckham previously visited Giants facilities in October but he did not meet with general manager Joe Schoen or team brass. Instead, he was visiting Sterling Shepard, who had just suffered an ACL tear, and Saquon Barkley.

This time around, Beckham will meet with Schoen, Kevin Abrams and head coach Brian Daboll.

The Giants and Schoen have not been shy about their interest in Beckham and have been in contact with his representatives for more than a month. They’ve been keeping tabs on his recovery and may view OBJ as the best available free agent option at wide receiver both this year and next.

“He’s a good player from when I evaluated him, if he’s healthy. If a player is healthy and they would help us win football games, we would pursue them if they fit what we’re looking for,” Schoen said earlier this month.

The Cowboys have also been very open about their desire to sign Beckham. From owner Jerry Jones on down, they’ve made a very public pitch.

The Giants selected Beckham 12th overall in the 2014 NFL draft and he quickly established himself as an elite superstar. But after a falling out with the Dave Gettleman regime, was traded to the Cleveland Browns in a March 2019 blockbuster.

Saquon Barkley: Odell Beckham-Giants reunion ‘would be a great story’

Saquon Barkley believes a New York Giants-Odell Beckham Jr. reunion would be a great story and says it’s one he’d love to see.

Arguably the biggest key to the New York Giants’ success this season has been Saquon Barkley. Through eight games, Barkley has put the team on his back, creating quite the Comeback Player of the Year Award campaign for himself.

The Giants have been winning with sub-par talent at the receiver position, leading to the team being tied to free agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The rumors of Beckham being connected to Big Blue amplified when the Giants did not acquire anyone at the trade deadline.

Beckham and Barkley on the same team was fun to see for the short time it lasted. The two have remained close and Barkley made it clear he would love to have Beckham rejoin Big Blue.

“He knows how I feel. He knows how we feel in this locker room,” Barkley told reporters. “I’ve said before, he’s a heck of a player. I’m more just, not saying worried, just focused on him continuing attacking his rehab, get ready. He’s a special player. He’s still got a lot left in the tank. And I know how he is already with his mindset going at his rehab. When he’s able to come back, he’s going to show his skillset.

“He’s Odell. He’s a heck of a player. When he’s healthy, he’s one of the best players in the league. Why wouldn’t anybody want him?”

And if Beckham came “home,” what a story that would be.

“Personally, I think it would be a great story to come back to a place that you were at before and continue to help build success and continue to come here with the right mindset and be a leader and be the type of player he can be for his team,” Barkley added. “Like I said, he’s a special player. He can help any team.”

Most had mixed feelings about Beckham’s departure from New York, but he has since expressed an appreciation for his time with the team.

Beckham would clearly be an upgrade over anyone the Giants have at the position, but they’re going to face stiff competition for his services and would have to be willing to sign him to a multi-year deal.

If Odell Beckham reunites with Giants, he wants a multi-year deal

Odell Beckham Jr. is open to a reunion with the New York Giants, but wants a multi-year deal with whatever team he eventually signs with.

Free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., nine months removed from a torn ACL, is expected to be medically cleared this week. And that means the race to sign him is officially on.

Among the teams likely to vie for Beckham’s services are the Dallas Cowboys. But they’re not alone. Although Jerry Jones’ group may be considered the early frontrunner, several other teams have also been linked to OBJ or in contact with his agents.

The New York Giants are among them.

“Obviously, he’s been a good player. He’s a guy we would consider and talk to when he’s healthy. I think he did the ACL in February, so, not sure really where he is physically. Yeah, any player to upgrade the roster, we’re going to consider and have conversations with their representatives,” general manager Joe Schoen said during his bye week press conference.

“He’s a good player from when I evaluated him, if he’s healthy. If a player is healthy and they would help us win football games, we would pursue them if they fit what we’re looking for.”

Schoen later clarified during an appearance on WFAN’s Tiki & Tierney that he had already been in contact with Beckham’s representatives.

But what will it take for the Giants to beat out the Cowboys and other potential Beckham suitors? Well, OBJ himself recently answered that question.

“Whether it’s Buffalo, Green Bay calling, the Cowboys, a reunion with the Giants,” Beckham said, “I want to be able to be able to spill my last — I’m not saying I’ve only got three or four (years) left — but these next three or four (years) into (a place) where I can buy a home. Like, I can call this place home.”

Beckham said that he’s tired of living out of suitcases, hotels and rentals, bouncing around the country and essentially living like a nomad. He added that he’s lived the Rockstar life and now just wants to settle down with a contender.

Once upon a time, a Giants-Beckham reunion seemed like an impossibility. There was bad blood between he, Dave Gettleman and Pat Shurmur, but that regime is gone. A new regime is in and OBJ has maintained a close relationship with Giants owner John Mara.

Could it happen? The answer is very much “yes.” Will it happen? That really just depends on how aggressive the Giants want to be or can be given their financial limitations.

Giants’ Sterling Shepard not considering retirement: ‘I’m a fighter’

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard says retirement isn’t on the table and also subtly admits to recruiting WR Odell Beckham Jr.

New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard doesn’t fully understand how his ACL ended up torn against the Dallas Cowboys, but he refuses to let it get him down.

Despite the injury, Shepard has remained a constant presence in and around the Giants. He was visibly elated when the team picked up their third win of the season last week against the Chicago Bears.

“Just because I’m going down doesn’t mean I need to have a cloud over my head and bring everybody else down,” Shepard told reporters on Wednesday. “I think it’s big for me, being one of the veteran guys in this locker room, to help the guys in any way I can — whether that’s helping them with route technique or just to hype them up. I like to be around the guys.”

Shepard will remain around the team until he undergoes his ACL surgery, which should come at some point next week. In the mean time, he intends to travel with the Giants to London where they’ll take on the Green Bay Packers.

What comes after that is anyone’s guess but Shepard is certain about one thing: Retirement isn’t an option. Instead, he’s going to fight like he always does because he believes he’s got another return in him.

“Dang right. I’m a fighter,” he said. “So, I want to go out on my own terms. I don’t want something like this to make me go out. So, I’m going to fight to get my body back to where I can perform and get this thing good.”

That may or may not come with the Giants, but that’s something else Shepard refuses to concern himself with. He’s appreciative of the organization for giving him another shot after his ruptured Achilles and feels like he owes it to them to battle back one more time.

“They mean a lot to me. They didn’t have to give me another shot to come back off that Achilles, and they did. And I can’t thank this staff and ownership enough for the opportunities that they’ve given me,” he said. “And I feel like I owe so much to them. I want to give them my all; I don’t want to go out like this. So, like I said: I’m going to fight. I’m a fighter. So, that’s what I’m going to do.”

Shepard can’t do anything for the Giants on the field at the moment, but he certainly can help them recruit. Which is precisely what he did earlier this week when Odell Beckham Jr. left his vacation in the Bahamas to come visit Shep in East Rutherford.

“It meant a lot to me. That’s one of my brothers,” Shepard said. “He’s done that a number of times, flying from wherever he is. He was in the Bahamans, but he wanted to come see me. But I was happy to see his face; I hadn’t seen him in a while. But it was great seeing him.”

And the recruitment? Shepard paused and took a look at the Giants’ public relations team, making sure he didn’t say anything to cause waves.

“We didn’t do anything illegal,” Shepard said with a laugh.

Odell Beckham Jr. dropped by Giants’ facility on Monday

Odell Beckham Jr. visited New York Giants facilities on Monday but it had nothing to do with official NFL business.

On the same day the New York Giants hosted safety Landon Collins for a visit, another familiar face dropped by the East Rutherford facilities.

Although he was not there on official NFL business, former Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. stopped by to visit some friends, including Saquon Barkley and Sterling Shepard.

Beckham did not meet with general manager Joe Schoen or head coach Brian Daboll during his stop and is not currently in negotiations with the team to sign. OBJ isn’t expected to be cleared from a torn ACL until sometime in November, at which point he’ll begin to weigh his free agent options.

While the Giants are in need of a quality outside receiver, Beckham is likely to seek out a team in contention for the Super Bowl. Early expectations are that he’ll return to the Los Angeles Rams, but that is not a guaranteed certainty.

Beckham was a first-round pick of the Giants in the 2014 NFL draft and spent the first five seasons of his career with the team. He was traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2019 shortly after signing a five-year, $95 million contract extension.

The trade took Beckham (and Giants fans) by surprise, and there were some sour feelings that remained for a couple years afterwards. However, that has faded over time and with the departure of former general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Pat Shurmur.

Beckham has actively engaged with Giants fans on social media this season and has been openly rooting for the team and his former teammates.

Giants’ Saquon Barkley ‘not really a fan’ of MetLife Stadium turf

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley admits that he’s “not really a fan” of the synthetic turf at MetLife Stadium.

New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard suffered a torn ACL in a Week 3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, having gone down despite a lack of contact.

Although head coach Brian Daboll insists the injury had nothing to do with the MetLife Stadium turf, it immediately thrust the controversial issue back into the limelight. Former Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. offered a quick take of his own, demanding the NFL go to all grass fields, and many other athletes agreed with him.

But the NFL was once again quick to dismiss the concerns, calling the rate of injuries on grass versus turf “negligible.”

Giants running back Saquon Barkley was once in the camp that dismissed the concerns but now in his fifth NFL season, that opinion has changed.

“Personally, I’m not really a fan of turf,” Barkley told reporters on Thursday. “I’m starting to understand when I was a rookie and older guys were complaining about the turf — I guess you start having a little more understanding of that.”

Although he chose his words carefully, it was clear what Barkley was driving at. It may have been fueled by the emotions over his close friend being lost for the season, but it’s not the first time he or his teammates have questioned the field in East Rutherford.

Opponents of the Giants also frequently complain. The San Francisco 49ers demanded an inspection of the turf in 2020 and in March of this year, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce called it the worst field in the NFL, “hands down.”

Daboll says the organization will look into the data after the season but with such a drastic cost to replace it, change seems unlikely — especially if the NFL continues to push back against the notion that it causes more injuries.

Ex-Giant Odell Beckham calls for grass fields after Sterling Shepard ACL tear

Ex-New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. is calling for all grass fields, including at MetLife Stadium, following Sterling Shepard’s ACL tear.

Former New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is chiming in about the playing surface at MetLife Stadium after his friend and former Giants teammate, Sterling Shepard, tore his ACL in a non-contact injury on Monday night.

Shepard is among the legion of players who despise the turf used at MetLife and blame it for causing scores of injuries over the years.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/CjA1EC6Af8W/?igshid=ZjA0NjI3M2I%3D

Kadarius Toney also voiced his displeasure.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters he did not believe the turf was the culprit for Shepard’s injury but they would be following up this offseason.

Beckham is himself rehabbing from an ACL tear he suffered in the Super Bowl as a member of the Los Angeles Rams last season.

There has been speculation the Giants were interested in bringing Beckham back but it’s unclear if they have the appetite for a reunion. The Giants also have very little cap space to deal with.

Beckham, who should be ready to return by midseason, will likely seek to catch on with a contender — which the 2-1 Giants still could be at that time.

The loss of Shepard really straps the Giants at the wide receiver position. Kadarius Toney is dealing with a hamstring issue and Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) is still out.

They’ve been playing with Shepard, Richie James and David Sills as their top three wideouts with the dog-housed Kenny Golladay getting very few snaps.

Report: Giants’ Brian Daboll has been FaceTiming free agent receivers

New York Giants coach Brian Daboll has reportedly been FaceTiming free agent wide receivers, and there are some interesting names available.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has not been coy about the team’s wide receivers and their week-to-week competition for playing time.

“Whether it’s the highest-paid player, the lowest-paid player, the highest draft pick, an undrafted free agent — we’re going to go out there and let the guys compete it out,” Daboll told reporters on Monday. “One week doesn’t necessarily mean this is what’s going to happen the next week. I think everybody understands what we are trying to do as an organization in terms of continuing to get better, competing for spots, working as hard as you can work.”

In Week 1, Kadarius Toney drew the short straw and saw just seven snaps. In Week 2, that was the role served by Kenny Golladay, the team’s highest-paid player, who took just seven snaps. Meanwhile, other receivers like David Sills have seen increased playing time.

This has been Daboll’s approach dating back to training camp and it doesn’t appear likely to change. How that’s interpreted is up for debate.

Daboll insists it’s because the group is deep, talented and competitive. Others believe it’s because the Giants lack quality depth at the position outside of a select few.

While Daboll would never publicly admit to the latter, what he’s doing in private seems to support that theory.

Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network reports that Daboll has been busy FaceTiming free agent wide receivers and weighing his options.

Daboll has been FaceTiming with free agent wide receivers, according to a league source.

League sources also informed Wilson that Golladay’s attitude and effort haven’t been questioned, but that his ability simply doesn’t fit what the Giants are trying to do.

Under new coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, they simply are trying to play the players they feel give the team the best chance to win right now. And their actions speak volumes about Golladay. They don’t think he can help them right now. Hence, why he isn’t playing more.

“It’s a bad contract, and they inherited Kenny,” a league source said. “Brian and Joe aren’t going to just play a guy because he makes a lot of money. He’s not their guy. They’re playing their guys. It is what it is.”

. . .

“I haven’t heard anything bad about his attitude,” a source said. “It sounds like it’s a football decision only, nothing personal.”

The receivers, not just Golladay, have underperformed so far this season. It’s something even Sterling Shepard has acknowledged.

“We have to do better on pre-snap,” Shepard told reporters this week. “Guys have to know where to go. Too many times that, myself included, I was going the wrong way. Then you look at the clock and we have to hurry up, so that throws off a little bit of the timing. Especially in our room — it starts with me — we have a lot to work on.”

Dan Duggan of The Athletic outlined exactly what has gone wrong recently, highlighting issues with Golladay in practice.

There was a scene during practice last Wednesday that appeared minor at the time, but, in hindsight, seems telling. At the start of every practice, quarterbacks throw passes to receivers running routes on air. Golladay ran a go-route, and quarterback Daniel Jones launched a pass about 40 yards downfield. Golladay didn’t come close to catching the pass, which landed a few yards beyond his grasp. It was impossible to tell initially if Jones had overthrown the receiver, but the reaction from Giants coaches signaled frustration with Golladay’s inability to catch up to an accurate pass.

The Giants don’t have much cap space and would likely have to create some in order to sign a free agent wide receiver. However, there are some intriguing options out there such as Will Fuller, Antonio Brown, T.Y. Hilton and Mohamed Sanu.

Oh yeah… There’s also some guy by the name of Odell Beckham Jr., who will be healthy later on this season.
