Transfer Portal: Mathis picks Nebraska

Nebraska gets a huge boost on defense via the transfer portal!!

The decision is in. The announcement has been made. Transfer portal pass rusher Ochaun Mathis has committed to the Nebraska Cornhuskers for the upcoming 2022 season. Last season, the former TCU Horned Frog had 45 tackles, was tied for the team lead with 4.0 sacks, and placed second with 7.0 tackles for loss. He was also a 2021 selection second-team All-Big 12. The defensive end chose TCU from high school over Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech. He was ranked as the best edge rusher available according to the 247sports. Nebraska’s defensive line was a thin unit all spring, and with the announcement of Casey Rogers and Chris Walker entering the transfer portal, they were in desperate need of reinforcements. Ochaun Mathis is that reinforcement. Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander has shown the inventive schemes he’s willing to deploy to ensure his playmakers significantly impact the game.

I look forward to seeing what schemes are in store for Ochaun Mathis

Nebraska waiting for a different kind of draft day announcement

A major announcement is taking place this week for Husker football and it has nothing to do with the NFL Draft.

Happy draft day, everyone! While it is the big day, almost all of the football world will have their eyes on Sin City. Most Nebraska fans are looking ahead to Saturday. No, they’re not waiting for the final day of the draft. They’re waiting to hear the announcement of where TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis will play next year. Mathis is a 6″5′ 280-pound defensive end and is one of the most sought-after players in the portal this year. Last year Mathis had 45 tackles, was tied for the team lead with 4.0 sacks, and placed second with 7.0 tackles for loss. He was also a 2021 selection second-team All-Big 12. The defensive end chose TCU from high school over Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech. His decision on Saturday will be between the Huskers and the Texas Longhorns.

We talked several times before about the importance of this possible commitment. Nebraska was already thin on the defensive line in the spring. With the announcement of Casey Rodgers entering the transfer portal now more than ever, Nebraska could use some reinforcements. If Mathis announces Nebraska this weekend, it would be one of the most significant commitments they’ve received in recent memory.

Top transfer portal player sets commitment date

The Huskers are still in the running for the top pass rusher in the Transfer Portal and he’s announced when he’ll make his commitment.

One of the top players remaining in the transfer portal has announced the date he will make his commitment on where he will play this season. Ochaun Mathis has announced that he will make his official decision between the Texas Longhorns and the Nebraska Cornhuskers on April 30th. Nebraska hosted the former Horned Frog when he came to the spring game on April 9th where both Scott Frost and Athletic Director Trev Alberts spent significant time with the Texas native. Mathis would fill a vital need on the defensive line, especially with the announcement that Casey Rogers has entered the transfer portal. The defensive line as a unit is now very thin and could use a boost in terms of depth and talent.

TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis is in Austin for another visit

Mathis is the best top pass rusher in the transfer portal and Texas seems to be the favorite.

Texas had a lot of weaknesses in 2021, but one of their biggest issues on the defensive side of the ball was that they couldn’t rush the passer.

In fact, the team’s leader in sacks was Ben Davis who had a whopping 2.5. It was evident that in the construction of the 2022 recruiting class that the trenches were a major area of focus, but even with all the defensive linemen they are going to bring in they do not have an experienced nor proven pass rusher at the college level.

This is where TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis comes into play, as the Longhorns are in the mix for his services. It was reported by Horns247 that Mathis is among the handful of visitors in Austin this Easter weekend.

Mathis, who led TCU in sacks in both 2019 and 2020 while also being named to the Second Team All-Big 12 both years, is ranked as the No. 2 available transfer according to 247Sports’ transfer portal rankings.

He currently holds five crystal ball predictions in favor of Texas.

The EDGE rusher that so many programs would love to have announced that he will be deciding where he will finish his career at the end of this month. Aside from Texas, schools such as USC, Nebraska, Ole Miss, and Penn State are who he will be choosing from.

Texas fans are hopeful that the addition of his former head coach, Gary Patterson, will pay dividends in getting him to Austin for the 2022 season.

Top transfer portal target to announce destination at months end

A top transfer portal target for the Huskers will announce his decision at the end of the month.

One of the top transfer portal targets for the Nebraska Cornhuskers this offseason has posted to social media that he will announce his transfer decision by the end of the month. Defensive End Ochaun Mathis was a guest at the Nebraska spring game last week, but the Huskers face stiff conversation for former Horned Frog defensive lineman. On top of Nebraska, Mathis’ has announced four other possible landing spots, including Ole Miss, Penn State, Texas, and USC.

Mathis described his visit to “Husker Nation,” as he called it “unbelievable.” The Husker defensive line was thin this spring, and Mathis would instantly provide some star power to a position group looking to add some depth from the transfer portal since signing day.  Nebraska faces stiff competition, though, from the Longhorns as the former Head Coach of the Horned Frogs, Gary Patterson is now on the Steve Sarkisian’s staff as a special assistant to the head coach. Everyone is anxiously awaiting the end of the month, no matter the outcome.
