TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis announces commitment date

Texas will be learning the fate of Ochaun Mathis very soon.

Ochaun Mathis could be the most important transfer addition of Texas’ offseason. There are now only two schools in the running for the former TCU pass rusher, Nebraska and Texas.

Mathis is ranked as the No. 2 overall player in the transfer portal, and many experts believe that the Longhorns have a slight edge over the Cornhuskers. He has had five crystal ball predictions in favor of Texas dating back to January, and he has been spotted numerous times on the Forty Acres.

Many Texas fans are hopeful that his connection with staff member Gary Patterson, who was his head coach at TCU, will help Texas’ chances of landing the talented pass rusher.

As part of his YouTube documentary this week, Mathis mentioned that he will be announcing his decision on April 30.

While it is not do-or-die per se, Texas has missed out on multiple defensive transfers that would have improved their pass rush (see Florida State’s Jared Verse), and Mathis seems like the best chance that they have to instantly improve it.

If the Longhorns do miss out on Mathis, it would be quite the gut punch, and they would need a good contingency plan as he would make the second defensive transfer they have missed out on in less than a week, as UCLA transfer Caleb Johnson selected Miami over Texas.

Texas’ pass rush has been an area of concern since the departure of Joseph Ossai, and Mathis could be the first legitimate replacement should he choose the Longhorns.
