Pacers forward Obi Toppin unveils strategy to slow down Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama: ‘Only thing you can do’

After the San Antonio Spurs loss to the Indiana Pacers, Obi Toppin spoke about the best strategy when guarding Victor Wembanyama.

Despite their success this season, the San Antonio Spurs are still a young team, and that showed on Monday night. They got absolutely obliterated by the Tyrese Haliburton-led Pacers, losing 152-111. Perhaps most notable, however, was the Pacers’ success when guarding rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama.

Wembanyama entered the league this year as one of the most hyped-up rookies in decades, yet somehow, he’s managed to exceed the expectations. However, against the Pacers on Monday, he struggled mightily. And according to Indiana forward Obi Toppin, the Pacers employed the only real strategy there is to attempt to slow down the 7-foot-whatever Frenchman.

Toppin said that all the Pacers could do was be physical with Wembanyama, so that’s exactly what they did. (H/t Dustin Dopirak of the Indianapolis Star)

The Knicks are in a great position to make a deal. The type of trade, whether big or small, buying or selling, or financially motivated or not, remains to be seen. As mentioned in HoopsHype’s trade guide, New York’s stability this season, and its combination of assets and moveable contracts, put them in a position to be buyers ahead of the trade deadline.

They have enough assets with their combination of tradeable first-round picks (up to four of their own and four heavily protected ones from other teams) and young promising prospects like Immanuel Quickley and Obi Toppin to trade for just about anyone. That was proven last offseason when they were close to acquiring Donovan Mitchell but held a line and ultimately fell short. The Knicks clearly want to acquire an All-Star while not giving up too much so they’ll have enough assets left to get more upgrades later.

Will New York’s pursuit of the next available star limit how aggressive they are ahead of the trade deadline? It’s possible. For example, according to Michael Scotto, the Knicks are unwilling to part with a first-round pick to get off Evan Fournier. He is owed $18.9 million for next season and is no longer in the team’s rotation. This could signal that while the team will be on the lookout for trades that improve the roster for this season, they won’t part with premium assets that would hurt their prospects in a future trade for an All-Star.

Below is a hierarchy of players they’ve been linked to.

Mock trade sends Zach LaVine to Knicks for Toppin, first-round pick

Bill Simmons’ proposal of trading LaVine would start a rebuild for the Bulls.

The Chicago Bulls are off to a 9-12 start to the season as they sit as the No. 12 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Compared to the beginning of last season, the Bulls are off to a complete opposite start as they’ve struggled out the gate with the same core group from last season.

Looking up at the top of the East, the Bulls’ chances of making a run in the playoffs seems slim, let alone just making the postseason — which could call for a potential blow up of the current roster.

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons put together three proposed trades for the Bulls to rebuild their team and focus on the future, including sending Zach LaVine to a fellow East Coast team.

Obi Toppin pulled off the Eastbay dunk after blocking a 3-pointer and fans were in awe

Obi Toppin is ready for another appearance in the dunk contest

You know how it goes with Knicks fans, man. They will be absolutely over the moon about nearly anything remotely positive that happens to their team. Remember their reaction after the first win of the season last year against the Celtics? Good times. Goooood times.

Today, though, they actually have something to be extremely pumped about. Obi Toppin just made one of the coolest back-to-back plays we’re probably going to see all year long and the regular season hasn’t even started yet.

Toppin blocked a 3-pointer on one end which is already generally super hard to do. But then, he followed that up by pulling out an East Bay dunk mid-game.

It was truly spectacular.

That’s a dunk contest dunk — in the middle of a game. To pull that out? Man. That’s a lot of skill and confidence.

Knicks fans were here for it. Even regular NBA fans had to appreciate it. It was that good.

Austin Reaves’ triple-double, Obi Toppin’s 42 and other wild lines from the NBA’s regular-season finale

Everyone decided to score 40 points on the final day of the NBA’s regular season.

The end of the NBA’s regular season is always a joy.

You get your share of teams playing with something on the line (especially with the recent introduction of the play-in tournament), teams who are resting stars ahead of the playoffs, and others who are shamelessly tanking for draft positioning.

The latter two are obviously the most fun because it leads to things like Andre Ingram being called up from the NBA G League in 2018, Grayson Allen scoring 40 points in the 2017 finale, or Kobe’s 60-point farewell.

Nevertheless, the season’s final day traditionally leaves us with plenty to talk about. This past Sunday was no different.

Here’s everything that took place:

NBA Slam Dunk Contest: Obi Toppin bests Juan Toscano-Anderson to win

Obi Toppin on Saturday defeated Juan Toscano-Anderson in the final to take home the trophy in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

New York Knicks forward Obi Toppin on Saturday defeated Golden State Warriors guard Juan Toscano-Anderson to take home the trophy in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest at All-Star Weekend.

Toppin, competing for the second straight year, and Toscano-Anderson made it to the final round after out-dunking Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony and Houston Rockets rookie Jalen Green. The event had some highlights but was mostly anticlimatic after numerous failed attempts.

Anthony got the action started by bringing out his father and former 11-year NBA veteran, Greg. Cole changed from his basketball shoes into a fresh pair of Timberlands and proceeded to dunk the ball from Greg. He was given a 40 by the panel of judges.

The turning point of the evening was when Green was on center stage.

He was assisted by rookie teammate Joshua Christopher. Unfortunately, the energy was sucked out of the building after Green needed several attempts to throw down his dunk. He eventually changed his dunk a bit and was finally able to get it down.

From there, the reaction from the announcers on TNT, which featured Reggie Miller, Kenny Smith and Dwyane Wade, was mixed. The crowd on hand in Cleveland, including those celebrities and former players, appeared to have given up on the competition.

The evening still produced several highlight-worthy jams that provided plenty of entertainment to continue All-Star Weekend. Here are all of the dunk attempts from the four contestants.

NBA fans were not thrilled by this year’s Slam Dunk Contest

Obi Toppin ran away with a victory on Saturday night after Juan Toscano-Anderson ran out of attempts on his final dunk.

The NBA Slam Dunk Contest was once nearly as big an affair as the All-Star Game itself. We all have our favorite whether that be Vince Carter’s monster performance in 2000 or a more recent event like the 2016 showdown between Aaron Gordon and Zach LaVine.

This year’s contest proved to be a bit anticlimactic, though. New York Knicks forward Obi Toppin rolled to a relatively easy victory, having the high score in the first round and essentially winning by default in the finals after fellow finalist Juan Toscano-Anderson ran out of attempts on his second dunk.

There were certainly iconic moments from Toppin’s performance, and while it wasn’t his highest-scoring dunk, it’s hard not to be impressed with this one that sealed his advancement into the final round. Toppin tossed it off the glass and slammed it home with a windmill through the legs.

There were also some, shall we say, interesting moments. Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony led off the contest by channeling his inner New Yorker, donning a pair of Timberlands and wearing the Knicks jersey that his father, Greg Anthony, once wore. The elder Anthony also gave his son the assist.

But Anthony’s run came to an end prematurely as he ran out of attempts on his second dunk and was eliminated in the first round.

That proved to be a recurring theme throughout the contest, as many of the candidates took several tries before successfully executing the dunk. Some fans were disappointed with the showing, which was far from one of the most exciting dunk contests in recent years.

Here were some of the best reactions on Twitter.

NBA Slam Dunk Contest 2022: Cole Anthony, Jalen Green headline participants

Cole Anthony and Jalen Green are reportedly among the players set to participate in the 2022 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony and Houston Rockets rookie Jalen Green are reportedly among the players set to participate in the 2022 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Anthony was the first known player to commit to the event while the news of Green participating first surfaced on Tuesday. They will be joined by New York Knicks forward Obi Toppin and Golden State Warriors guard Juan Toscano-Anderson on Feb. 19 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Anthony and Green have thrown down several highlight-reel dunks this season while Toppin participated in the Slam Dunk Contest last year. He narrowly lost to Portland Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons in the final round.

All-Star Weekend will return to its usual three-night format after it was altered last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Slam Dunk Contest will headline Saturday night and will follow the Skills Challenge and 3-Point Contest.

The coverage of the three events will begin at 8 p.m. EST on TNT.

Miles Bridges and Obi Toppin exchanged windmill dunks during a game and it was so awesome

The dunk contest is already over.

Man. Miles Bridges and Obi Toppin really gave us a show in Charlotte on Friday night.

The two really exchanged windmill dunks in the middle of a game. No, you didn’t read that wrong. Windmill dunks, y’all. MID-GAME WINDMILL DUNKS. That is just unthinkable.

So Toppin got the ball on the break and knew exactly what to do with it. With no one around him, he leaped up and gave us a ferocious windmill. It didn’t even look like the ball made it through the rim initially. The dunk was amazing. Of course, the Hornets had to call a timeout.

But, clearly, that was only because they needed to let Miles Bridges know it was time for him to give a windmill right back. So he got the ball on the break and did what needed to be done.

Bridges said it was the crowd’s fault.

They gave us a whole dunk contest. We don’t even need the one during All-Star break now. We already know who the winners are.

NBA fans absolutely loved this.
