From DeFremery Park to the Garden: The Oakland roots of Boston Celtics greatness

A school, a park, and a home in Oakland California helped create a hotbed for Black excellence central to the Celtics’ success.

Under the light of an incandescent lightbulb illuminating the inky sky of Oakland, Califonia, a young Paul Silas played basketball with fellow future Celtics great Bill Russell, his brother Charlie, and his cousins Fritz and Aaron Pointer in the sweet heat of a late summer evening. On the sidelines, the Pointer sisters — still a decade away from being The Pointer Sisters — were enjoying the show.

Basketball played at 18th and Adeline’s DeFremery Park in the early 1960s was the axis their world revolved around. It was a quiet but poignant testimony of what the families who had migrated to Oakland in the 1940s built for themselves as they fled the brutal, institutionalized repression of Jim Crow in the southern United States.

From the bitter legacy of Jim Crow, the Silas, Russell, and Pointer families (and many others) created a community where greatness was more than a dream, and a space to simply enjoy the heat of a sultry summer evening with friends became possible.

Best quotes from Tom Izzo following Michigan State’s win over Oakland

Michigan State basketball wasn’t perfect on Wednesday night, but they still managed to take down a struggling Oakland basketball team 67-54.

After the game, MSU head coach Tom Izzo, donning a very ugly sweater, took to the podium to speak to the media about the game and where his team currently stands heading into the holidays. Jaden Akins also gave a quick update on his overall health and endurance, and Oakland coach Greg Kampe also joked about Izzo’s sweater.

You can find the notable quotes from that presser below.

Former Michigan State basketball guard Rocket Watts commits to Oakland via transfer portal

Rocket Watts is set to transfer to Oakland

Rocket Watts is coming home. After a disappointing, injury-riddled season with Mississippi State, former Michigan State basketball guard Rocket Watts is returning to his home state and committing to Oakland via the NCAA transfer portal.

There was a time where Rocket Watts looked like the heir apparent for the Spartans before he was asked to adapt to a point guard role out of necessity. After a disappointing season trying to play point guard, Watts looked for a fresh start with Mississippi State but was saddled with a hip injury throughout the season and only averaged 4.4 points per game, a career-low for him.

I think Oakland is a great fit for Watts to come in and try to be the aggressive, speedy guard he was in his first year with MSU.

REPORT: Michigan State basketball interested in Oakland transfer forward

Michigan State is reportedly interested in Oakland transfer forward

Michigan State basketball needs to fill some gaps in their roster this offseason via the transfer portal, and it looks like they are looking close to home to fill an opening on the wing. On Thursday, David Klein of SpartanHoops reported that the Spartans have interest in Oakland transfer Micah Parrish.

Parrish is a 6-foot-6 small forward who averaged 12.1 points and 6 rebounds per game last year as a sophomore and made the all-conference defensive team. He had 19 points and 8 rebounds against the Spartans in their lone match-up of the season.

Parrish is a polished defender who, while not a sharpshooter, is at least a willing shooter who averages around 35-percent beyond the arc and could be the plug-and-play option Izzo needs to fill the void left by Gabe Brown on the wing.

HALFTIME REPORT: Alabama up 38-26 on Oakland

The Tide is up at the half!

Nate Oats and his No. 14-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide team is playing its fourth game of the year tonight. Needless to say, the Crimson Tide has a whole lot of shots dropping so far in this game against Oakland (2-1).

Jahvon Quinerly and Jaden Shackelford each have 12 points in the first half. Shackelford has added three rebounds while Quinerly has pulled one down, as well.

Alabama is shooting 43.3% from the field and has converted on four 3PT on 17 attempts.

The Tide defense is doing a fantastic job in rim protection in this one, allowing just 26.5% shooting, including just 14% from beyond the arc.

The Crimson Tide holds the advantage on the boards, as well, with 25 rebounds to Oakland’s 17.

The only thing that needs a bit of work is ball control. Bama has recorded nine turnovers on the day.

The second half is set to begin soon, we will see you again for the post-game report!

WATCH: Michigan State Basketball vs. Oakland first half highlights

Here are the best highlights of Michigan State’s close game against Oakland.

At the time of writing this post, Tom Izzo has never lost to Oakland, but they have always been a team, like Detroit Mercy, who have always been able to test Izzo’s teams and keep them on their toes. That has been the case so far today in the first half of MSU’s game against Oakland as the Golden Grizzlies have been giving the Spartans their best shot. MSU currently leads 44-40.

However, the Spartans still remain in control of this game going into the half, and they did flash some impressive play in the first half. Below, we compiled the best highlights of the first half from Twitter:
