The Warriors’ new ‘death lineup’ didn’t look so deadly in Game 5 against the Nuggets

The Nuggets figured out the key to beating the Warriors’ new lineup

For the first time in three years, the Warriors are moving on to the second round of the postseason after putting the Nuggets away. They’ll either play the Memphis Grizzlies or the Minnesota Timberwolves.

They did it by finally winning their first closeout game in the postseason since the 2019 Western Conference Finals. Of course, it wasn’t easy. Closeout games are almost never easy.

But in this particular game, the Warriors struggled quite a bit. After building a small lead against the Nuggets in the first half, the Warriors fell down by as much as 10 going into the second.

But the wild part isn’t that the Nuggets built a double-digit lead — it’s who they did it against.

Remember the Warriors’ new “death lineup” everyone has been talking about? The Nuggets were absolutely cooking against it on Wednesday.

The lineup of Jordan Poole, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins had a +34.4 net rating going into their closeout game against the Nuggets, per NBA.com’s stats tool. In Game 5 their net rating together was -37.5 in 7 total minutes played together.

Now, there are lots of caveats here. This is very obviously a super small sample pulled from a super small sample. They’ve only played five games together in the postseason so far and a seven-minute span within five games isn’t something we should make a big deal out of.

But at the same time, there were identifiable weaknesses in this lineup that opponents will surely pick apart in this lineup.

The biggest issue was its size — or a lack thereof. That was an issue that bore itself out through rebounding. The Nuggets won on the glass 50-37 which is a solid margin, but it only tells half the story. They also had 14 offensive rebounds in total, which is a huge number.

When you dig even deeper you see the Nuggets held the Warriors to a defensive rebounding rate of 50% when their “death lineup” was on the court. That means during those 7 minutes the Warriors only rebounded 50% of those Nuggets misses on defense. League average defensive rebounding rate for the regular season was 76.8%.

Basically, the Warriors were dreadful at finishing off defensive possessions in Game 5. The Nuggets’ size was just too much. Charles Barkley put it perfectly when talking about how Aaron Gordon was the Nuggets’ key to victory.

“They put them 4 lil dudes out there. He is bigger than everybody else…[The Warriors] are great on one end of the floor but they can’t rebound the ball and they’ve got no size.”

Barkley was exactly right. It’s how Aaron Gordon got five offensive rebounds in the game. That lack of size also led to easy offensive boards like this one for Nikola Jokic.

That’s the exact thing the Warriors’ death lineup has no defense against. They’re just too small to rebound and closeout possessions. They can score like nobody’s business and they might get the initial stop. But if you’re a big enough team, you’ll be able to take advantage of that.

The Warriors figured that out and countered it with their original starting lineup to give them a bit of size with Kevon Looney. That move won them the game.

So now, moving forward, Golden State is faced with a big question. Steph Curry is starting again. But does that mean you have to feature this new lineup? Or do you go back to what works and keep your death lineup as a curveball teams have to be ready for?

I’m not quite sure what the answer is. But the Warriors should probably figure that out before they figure out who they’re playing next.

Nuggets offseason preview: Nikola Jokic extension, free agents and more

The Denver Nuggets went through somewhat of a gap year as they await the recoveries of Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. They still remained competitive and fortified their bench by re-signing Will Barton and JaMychal Green, as well as signing Jeff Green to contracts that run through next season. Nikola Jokic had his second straight MVP-caliber season, leading a short-handed Nuggets team to 48 wins. He will now aim to lead them tor a Finals run next season assuming good health and internal improvement.

The Nuggets will head into the 2022 offseason with limited flexibility but with several important objectives. While most of their roster is set and should improve on health and continuity alone, they also need to extend Jokic as well as bring back several key free agents. They are set to become significant taxpayers this season for the first time in over a decade, so it will be interesting to see how deep into the tax ownership is willing to go.

NBA Twitter reacts to Nikola Jokic’s ejection in Game 2

Here’s how NBA Twitter reacted to Nikola Jokic’s ejection in Game 2 between the Nuggets and Warriors.

Frustrated for not getting enough calls from the officials, Nikola Jokic got two technical fouls and was eventually ejected from Game 2 between the Denver Nuggets and the Golden State Warriors (106-126).

Draymond Green was the first to react to The Joker’s ejection, waving goodbye to him, and as always, NBA Twitter had a lot to say as well.

Austin Rivers got ejected over a phantom elbow to Lance Stephenson’s face and NBA fans were baffled

Austin Rivers was ejected after officials said a phantom elbow from Lance Stephenson was ruled a “malicious act.” Fans were confused.

Remember back in the day when the NBA fined players for flopping? Yeah, feels like a long time ago, right?

That’s because it has been. The last player to be fined for a flop was Marcus Smart back in 2020. Before that it was Patrick Beverley back in 2019. And those are the only two flopping penalties we’ve seen dished out to players in 6 years. SIX. YEARS.

That should probably change very soon. Because, after what happened in the Nuggets’ game against the Pacers on Wednesday, Lance Stephenson should be getting another fine in the mail soon.

Austin Rivers was ejected for delivering an elbow to Stephenson’s face. Except…he didn’t actually hit Stephenson. He just flopped.

There was literally no contact between the two of them. Stephenson just jerked his head back a bit and it looked like he did. Yet still, somehow, Rivers was ejected from the game after a review. It doesn’t make a ton of sense.

I guess one could argue that maybe Rivers was faking throwing an elbow here to free up some space? Tony Brothers called it a “malicious act.”

Rivers, of course, was incredulous. He even tweeted about it after the game.

Honestly, it’s hard to blame him in this situation. It’s hard to see a malicious act being committed when there was no contact made. It gets especially hard when you consider Stephenson’s history of exaggerating contact — the Pacers still lead the league in flop fines because of him.

NBA fans were so confused by this call.

NBA execs poll: Luka Doncic top player to build around; Evan Mobley voted ahead of Zion Williamson

In September of 2020, HoopsHype polled 15 NBA talent evaluators and asked them to rank their top five Under 25 players to build around. We have repeated the exercise with 17 NBA executives this time. There was no change at No. 1, but quite a few after that.

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic remains the first choice, though he’s no longer the consensus pick after a somewhat disappointing first half of the season in which he’s still playing himself into shape.

Boston’s Jayson Tatum barely retains No. 2 with half the share of the vote of last season while Ja Morant moves up to No. 3.

LaMelo Ball and Trae Young went from no votes to cracking the top five.

In our scoring system, the top player received 10 points, the second received seven points, the third received five points, the fourth received three points, and the fifth player received one point for each ballot.

The results of the poll are listed below.

NBA media poll: Stephen Curry ahead of Kevin Durant for MVP to start 2022

Stephen Curry enters 2022 as the leading contender for the MVP award with Kevin Durant in striking distance and Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic also lurking.

To determine the top contenders for the MVP award, HoopsHype anonymously polled 20 media members who voted on last year’s official NBA awards for their current top five MVP rankings.

As with the official vote, the top player received 10 points, the second received seven points, the third received five points, the fourth received three points, and the fifth player received one point for each ballot.

Markieff Morris reacts to Nikola Jokic’s cheap shot: ‘I can take my licks and keep pushing’

Well, this is over.

All the NBA world is talking about is Nikola Jokic’s cheap shot against Markieff Morris.

How long should Jokic be suspended? Should Morris be suspended, too? Which one of them is tougher? Whose brothers would win in a fight between one another? I mean, Jokic’s brothers literally made a Twitter today so they can tweet through it with Marcus Morris.

It’s all pretty silly. The conversation has devolved into playground chatter at this point.

And, with that, it looks like Markieff is ready to just put it all to rest.

He finally spoke out about Jokic’s hit on him and, well, it seems like he’s taking it pretty lightly at this point.

“No doubt I took a hard foul which I always do but I’ve never hit a man with his back turned! Luckily, we built different over here. I can take my licks and keep pushing. Joker 1 smooth 0.”

Insert the “lol” at the end of that and it seems pretty clear that he doesn’t care about this much. At least not any more after sitting with it for a few hours.

It’s pretty clear both of these dudes were wrong. It was just a little on-court scuffle. Everything seems to be OK now. It’s time to move on.

Shoutout to Morris for making that clear with this tweet. Hopefully, everyone else gets the memo.

Who should trade for Damian Lillard? A roundtable debate

If Damian Lillard asks out of Portland, here’s where he should go

The NBA Finals are in full swing and Olympic basketball is right around the corner.

But that doesn’t mean it’s too early to discuss potential offseason happenings. With the NBA Draft coming in just over a week, transactions between teams from around the NBA will be flying sooner rather than later.

And everyone has their eyes on what’s happening with Damian Lillard. Will Portland’s star stay or will he demand a trade? And who should trade for him? All very valid questions.

They’re also questions we attempted to answer as a staff. Here’s a look at our roundtable debate at where Lillard would fit best considering all of the different variables.
