Where Notre Dame landed in ESPN’s way-too-early top 25 rankings

This is more like it for the Irish

It’s not just 247Sports that is compiling way-too-early top 25 polls for the 2024 season, ESPN released its lists on Tuesday and had Notre Dame in a much different spot.

The Irish are viewed as fringe top-10 team by 247Sports, but ESPN has them as its No. 5 ranked school. Notre Dame moved up five spots from their previous poll, as the jump was fueled by multiple impressive transfers.

Mark Schlabach noted that “it’s time for them to turn the corner, (Marcus) Freeman has laid the groundwork.” The additions of quarterback Riley Leonard, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock along with receivers Kris Mitchell and Beaux Collins factored into the Irish making a rise.

He has Notre Dame’s biggest question marks surrounding replacing both offensive tackles, Joe Alt and Blake Fisher, which is a legit concern. Depth is there, but experience is lacking. If the Irish can shore up those two spots, they should be in line for a big 2024.

The golf program at this storied university qualified for the NCAA finals for the first time in 58 years

Coach John Handrigan’s men did something the program hadn’t accomplished since 1966

Deep in the heart of Texas Wednesday, coach John Handrigan’s Notre Dame men found the right golf shots at the right time to do something the program hadn’t accomplished since 1966 — qualify for the NCAA championship as a team.

No. 3 player Nate Stevens followed a holed-out second shot for eagle 2 at the par-4, 427-yard 17th with a birdie 3 at the par-4, 517-yard 18th hole of the University of Texas Golf Club to finish a three-under-par round of 68 which helped the Irish to a third-place finish in the 54-hole NCAA Austin (Texas) Regional.

Stevens, a sophomore from Northfield, Minn., who started the day tied for 37th place individually, ended up tied for 12th – sharing the largest improvement in the field on the day. His one-under 212 total left Stevens second on the team behind freshman No. 5 Rocco Salvitti of Canonsburg, Pa.. who birdied the 16th and 17th holes on his way to a one-over 72 which left him tied for ninth individually at two-under 211.

Freshman No. 2 Jacob Modleski of Noblesville, Ind., and Guerin Catholic, gave Handrigan and the Irish a third Top-15 finish at even-par 213 following a closing one-over 73.

With the youngsters leading the way, Notre Dame was able to overcome a four-over 288 round to finish third at six-under 846 behind host Texas, which shot five-under 279 to run away with the team title at 27-under 825 thanks to the efforts of medalist Christian Maas (66-204) and runner-up Nathan Petronzio (69-205).

Tennessee, led by Bryce Lewis’ 70-208 effort, shot 285 for a three-day total of 841, five strokes better than the Irish, who had rounds of four-over 75 from graduate captain Palmer Jackson and senior No. 4 Angelo Marcon. Jackson was at two-over 215 to finish tied for 25th while Marcon totaled 217 for a tie for 35thplace.

Texas, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Utah (850) and Wake Forest (854) qualified as teams and individual Kelvin Hernandez of UNC Greensboro also advanced to the NCAA finals May 25-29 at the par-72, 6,996-yard North course at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

The 5-foot-9 Salvitti, easily Notre Dame’s most consistent player during the 54 holes as his rounds of 70, 69 and 72 attest, birdied the first hole but then couldn’t get anything to drop while making 10 pars and four bogeys. But Salvitti finished strongly with a birdie at the par-3, 248-yard 16th hole, another birdie at the 427-yard 17th and a par at 18.

The 6-foot-2 Stevens, too, had to overcome some early struggles. He had a roller-coaster start with three birdies and two bogeys in his first seven holes and then doubled the 605-yard, par-5 ninth to go out in one-over 36. But he closed with a four-under 32 thanks to two birdies and his holed-out eagle at the par-4 17th.

The 5-foot-10 Modleski, who had a pair of 70s to open the tournament, made double bogeys on the par-3 second and par-4 sixth holes in addition to two other bogeys. But he offset them with four birdies, the last at the 13th hole before finishing with five straight pars.

The 6-foot-1 Jackson, who grew up in western Pennsylvania and is named after golfing great Arnold Palmer, had 14 pars and four bogeys in his round of 75. The 5-foot-10 Marcon, a senior from San Francisco, had three birdies, not enough to offset the five bogeys and one double he made in his round of 75.

Notre Dame football makes RJ Young’s post-spring top 25

Not much to complain about here

There have been some questionable post-spring top 25’s that have hit the internet over the last month, and Notre Dame has been the focus of one of them.

You won’t hear nearly as much backlash from Fox Sports [autotag]RJ Young[/autotag]’s list, as the has the Irish as his No. 15 team. He didn’t completely omit Notre Dame, but having them at that spot is pretty fair. You could make the argument that they should be ranked a bit higher, but you won’t see social media cause a storm.

There are surely more than a few questions surrounding Notre Dame, which includes Riley Leonard’s health, replacing three starters on the offensive line, and who will be the next pass rusher.

Notre Dame should be in this range when the real preseason polls come out, and will be in contention for a College Football Playoff spot as well.

ESPN is high on Notre Dame’s offense now and in the future

What do you think of ESPN’s ranking of the Irish offense?

One of the biggest aspects that has kept Notre Dame football from the upper echelon of the sport has been its offense.

The defense has held up its part of the bargain, but offensively there hasn’t been nearly as much success. That could be changing in the near future, as soon as this fall.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg recently projected which offenses will be the best over the next three seasons and Notre Dame landed as his No. 12 team, a jump from being ranked No. 17 last season. He sees the offensive issues like I have, stating “the team’s outcome could come down to the offense, specifically quarterback play and the passing game, which hasn’t been at an elite level often enough.”

Rittenberg likes the Irish’s running back, and tight end’s, while is a little cautious about the offensive line due to the departures the unit had. With just two returning starters, Notre Dame is a bit green upfront. His biggest concern are the wide receivers, a group that the “production remains low.”

Again, it hard to disagree with Rittenberg’s assessment of the Irish offense, but this unit should be better than the one we saw last year.

California 4-star linebacker will officially visit Notre Dame football

KVA part two anyone?

Once again, Notre Dame football is looking to add an elite linebacker talent from California.

In the 2024 cycle, the Irish won a heated battle for Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, and are looking to do the same with [autotag]Madden Faraimo[/autotag]. The 6-foot, 3-inch and 210-pound linebacker has set up four official visits, one of them being to South Bend on the weekend of June 7th.

Faraimo will also visit Washington, Ohio State and Texas, who along with Notre Dame are the presumed favorites for the nations No. 59 overall player and 6th linebacker according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. There is also potential for USC to be involved, and since they are his home state school, setting up an official isn’t as important due to proximity.

If everything works out like it did with KVA, Irish fans will be very happy when Faraimo makes a decision.

Notre Dame will have a hat on the table when in-state 2025 corner commits

Will the Irish get good news later this month?

If you didn’t know by now, Notre Dame football doesn’t have much room to add on prospects to its 2025 recruiting class.

There are already 20 commits, and barring any flips, the most likely max that the Irish will bring in would be five more players. One of those potential additions could be in-state cornerback [autotag]Mark Zackery IV[/autotag], who is ready to end the recruiting process and will commit on May 25th.

There are four schools vying for his pledge: Florida, Cincinnati, Michigan and the Irish. Each of the teams would love to add Zackery to their class, as the 5-foot, 11-inch and 165-pound prospect is ranked as the No. 134 overall player and 15th cornerback in his class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

As long as nothing changes for Zackery from now until when he makes his commitment, it’s looking very good for Notre Dame as they hold the only two 247Sports Crystal Ball picks for the talented corner.

Notre Dame gets plenty of love in EA Sports NCAA College Football teaser photos

Notre Dame one of three schools that Illinois 2025 receiver will commit to

The Irish could lure yet another elite Illinois prospect to South Bend

There is not much room for Notre Dame football to add to its 2025 recruiting class, but they will make some space for certain prospects.

One of those is Illinois wide receiver [autotag]Talyn Taylor[/autotag], who is one record saying that he will most likely commit to one of three schools: Ohio State, Georgia or the Irish. At 6-foot, 1-inch and 173-pounds, the pass catcher is one of the nations best, ranking as the No. 112 overall prospect and 13th receiver according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

An official visit to South Bend is set up for next month, Notre Dame sandwiched between his two other finalists.

Currently, Notre Dame has three commits at the position: Elijah Burress, Shaun Terry and Jerome Bettis Jr. Taylor would be the highest ranked of the group if he were to ultimately choose the Irish.

Florida wide receiver 2025 target doesn’t have Notre Dame in his top group

The Irish are on the outside looking in for the receiver at the moment

When Florida 2025 wide receiver [autotag]Jayvan Boggs[/autotag] decommitted from Ohio State, many expected Notre Dame to be one of his main recruiters going forward.

While that happened, what also transpired has been extremely interesting. Boggs, who stands 6-feet and weighs 188 pounds told the USA TODAY State of Florida Recruiting H.Q. podcast that four schools are at the top of his list: UCF, Texas, Missouri and Georgia.

The omission of the Irish is very interesting, considering Boggs made a spring visit and all seemed to go very well for both parties. He has set up official visits for each of the schools in the top group, but there is still time for Notre Dame to make up the ground.

For the Irish to really be considered a contender for the nation’s No. 191 overall prospect and 23rd wide receiver on the 247Sports composite, they need to set up an official visit.

There is still time, but if Boggs makes his decision following his current lined up officials, the Irish are most likely going to have to look elsewhere for another receiver.

An SEC program is trending to add former Notre Dame cornerback Micah Bell

This would be an interesting pairing

Unfortunately for cornerback [autotag]Micah Bell[/autotag], his time playing for Notre Dame football was short.

During his freshman season, he registered just one tackle, kept his year of eligibility by redshirting then opted to move on from the Irish following spring practice. After just a few weeks as a free agent, it looks like Bell may be coming to a decision on where his next football home is, Vanderbilt.

According to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, the Commodores are trending in his re-recruitment. As a recruit, Bell was ranked as the No. 258 overall player and 30th cornerback according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Vanderbilt’s head coach is a familiar face, as former Irish defensive coordinator [autotag]Clark Lea[/autotag] runs the program. Bell would be a great addition for the former Notre Dame coach.
