North Carolina vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

Score, don’t score, it doesn’t matter. North Carolina will probably score more.

That’s not saying it wouldn’t be nice if the Tar Heels didn’t have the worst defense in the ACC, but it’s Week 11. It’s baked into the cake that they’ll probably allow 500 yards and 31 points. They’ll gain 501 yards and score 32.

Steady, the North Carolina offense has a great balance, Drake Maye is one of the best young quarterbacks in the country, and they’re not turning the ball over enough to matter.

So Wake Forest is going to bomb away and throw at will on this bunch? Okay, but its defense gets hit hard, the offensive line allows too many plays behind the line, and …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The offense isn’t going to turn it over a bazillion times.

Wake Forest occasionally melts down.

It was totally unstoppable in the 2020 Duke’s Mayo Bowl against Wisconsin, and then Sam Hartman and company turned the ball over four times and lost. It turned it over three times late last year in a key game against Clemson, and gave it up four times in the ACC Championship loss to Pitt.

And it turned it over 11 times in the last two games against Louisville and NC State. Both of them were losses.

Again, that’s not going to happen against a North Carolina defense that doesn’t take the ball away enough to matter. Assume the Demon Deacons will give it up once, but they won’t hand it over four times. When they don’t turn it over, they win.

That, and they might have the one offense in the ACC that can hang punch for punch with this attack, and how do we know?

What’s Going To Happen

North Carolina 58, Wake Forest 55. That was the wild fun show of last season with almost 1,200 yards of combined offense. It’s asking for too much for a repeat of that, but it might not be far off.

Back at home – the two losses and the mistakes over the last few weeks were on the road – Wake Forest will get its groove back by getting up early with a few quick touchdowns, but North Carolina will roar back and take the lead early in the fourth.

Hartman will get the touchdown drive in the final moments to pull this off.

North Carolina 58, Wake Forest 55 Reaction

Nothing stops.

In the strange way the ACC season works this year, this technically wasn’t a conference game, so – as this is written before the afternoon games – Wake Forest is still two games up on NC State and two up on Clemson with three to play against NC State, at Clemson, at Boston College.

Don’t worry about the College Football Playoff talk for now. If Wake Forest wins those final three games – all solid now that Boston College has QB Phil Jurkovec back – win out, and put the pressure on the CFP committee as a 12-1 Power Five champion.

There are all sorts of strange tie-breaker things that could happen – I still think Clemson ends up winning yet another ACC Championship, somehow – but the Demon Deacons can realistically come close to locking this up by beating NC State next week.

However, for as much fun as the Demon Deacon offense is, this was the first true test for the team – Virginia was probably the best win so far – and the defense didn’t pass with a brutal fourth quarter and horrible game against the run.

Sam Hartman threw for close to 400 yards with five scores, he ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns, the receiving corps was amazing …

And the Demon Deacon run defense couldn’t do anything to help the cause.

Ty Chandler ran for 213 yards and four scores, Sam Howell threw for over 200 yards and a score and ran for over 100 with two touchdowns, and a big fourth quarter burst got the job done for a Tar Heel team that desperately needed this win.

With at Pitt, Wofford, and at NC State to go, a loss for a 4-4 team would’ve put all bowl hopes in jeopardy. Again, this game didn’t count in the ACC standings, but

If Pitt loses to Virginia or at Syracuse, and Virginia drops the game to Virginia Tech – or beats Pitt and the Panthers lose at Syracuse – North Carolin a is in the the ACC Championship by winning out.

It’s probably not going to happen – too many things have to come through – but Wake Forest vs. North Carolina doing this again in the ACC Championship would be a mighty fine end to the conference season.

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Demon Deacons very, very, very, very, very quietly are on a four-game winning streak after starting the season with a loss to Clemson – it played okay in the opener – and in a shootout road loss to NC State.

The offense is okay, the defense has been good enough, and more than anything else …

Turnover margin, turnover margin, turnover margin.

Wake Forest lost a fumble against NC State. That’s it. That’s the only giveaway in six games for a team that’s a ridiculous +14 on the season with three takeaways or more in each of the last four games – all wins.

North Carolina hasn’t had a problem with giveaways, but it’s +1 on the season and gave it up three times over the last two games. This Demon Deacon team capitalizes on EVERYTHING.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Demon Deacon run defense has been fine, not great. It has to be great.

It allowed 200 yards or more in three games in four before getting the inept Syracuse offense. The defensive front is okay at getting behind the line, but it’s about to get hit hard by a Tar Heel offense that’s able to put up 300-yard ground games without any sort of a problem.

How strong is the UNC attack? Its blowing past 500 yards per game over the last five. Wake Forest has the offense to keep up for a bit, but it can’t keep trading blows with this attack.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Being at home seems to matter to North Carolina. The team is going to get pushed, and it’s going to have to deal with a Wake Forest squad that’s not going away, but the running game will win out.

Expect a fun high-scoring fight, and expect yet another inconsistent overall Tar Heel performance from a team that struggles to put together a full 60 minutes.
