Clemson Wide Receiver Arrested for Reckless Driving

A Clemson wide receiver was recently arrested for reckless driving charges.

A Clemson wide receiver was arrested early in the week.

According to reports from the State’s Chapel Fowler, Noble Johnson was charged with driving recklessly on Feb. 14. The young Tiger was on his way to do mat drills when this happened.

The redshirt freshman was traveling at approximately 71 mph in a 35 mph, with The Clemson Insider reporting that Johnson was late to the mat drills, which is the reason for his speeding. The report states that the accident happened at 6:12 a.m. The collision occurred when the driver of the other vehicle failed to yield while attempting a left turn. The driver had a passenger and was charged with failure to yield the right of way and driving without a license.

We will look out for further updates on the incident.

Dabo Swinney discusses freshmen wide receivers, who will play, and who will redshirt

Dabo Swinney broke down Clemson’s freshmen wide receivers and who we should expect to play or get redshirt.

The Clemson football program heads into the 2023 college football season with a high ceiling on offense but a wide receiver room that will need to step up for the Tigers to perform to the level they need to for a college football playoff appearance.

During his radio call-in show Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney took the time to discuss the wide receivers, particularly the freshmen wideouts. Who of Tyler Brown, Ronan Hanafin, Misun “Tink” Kelley, and Noble Johnson will play, and who will redshirt?

“Really liked the four that we signed, and Tyler Brown for sure’s going to play,” Swinney said. “Ronan, we’re going to redshirt, and then Noble and Tink, we’re going to try to hold them; we’ll see how it goes. A lot of it depends on (Troy) Stellato, who’s back now. He’s looked good the last few days. … He’s been here two years and hasn’t played (due to injuries). He’s a guy that certainly can do it, and he’s a bonus guy because we feel really good about our core group.”

A local product, Tyler Brown, has been incredibly impressive during his short time with the program, with Swinney and others raving about what he is capable of multiple times. Expectations were that Johnson would be the freshmen wide receiver to have the earliest impact, but Brown has seemed to separate himself from the group.

Swinney also touched on the rule changes with postseason games now not counting toward the four-game limit for freshmen keeping their redshirt status.

“They changed the rule this year where the postseason doesn’t count,” Swinney said. “So let’s just say you go to the national championship, well, you can play seven games. The postseason does not count. So you can play four games in the season, you can play the ACC Championship, a playoff game, and the national championship. You can play seven games and still be redshirted.”

Clemson’s freshmen wide receivers are in a good spot right now.

Dabo Swinney on the Tigers’ freshmen wide receivers following Clemson’s first scrimmage

Dabo Swinney talked Clemson freshmen wide receivers following their first scrimmage.

Heading into the 2023 college football season, the Clemson wide receiver room will have to perform at a high level for the Tigers’ offense to remain consistent and compete with the top programs in the country.

Following their first scrimmage in Memorial Stadium, Swinney met with the media and discussed how the team’s true freshman wide receivers have looked. Speaking on Noble Johnson, Misun “Tink” Kelley, Tyler Brown, and Ronan Hanafin, Swinney discussed how they’ve been and what we can expect.

“Noble, Tink and Tyler are really in a good spot,” the head coach said. “Ronan has flashed. He’s made some really good competitive plays, but he’s probably got the most to learn at his position. But I feel really, really good about the progress Noble’s made. He’s had a couple pretty good days together. I think it’s slowing down a little.”

Great news for the Tigers, wide receiver is a position Clemson fans have been intrigued by heading into the season. While we know there are players in that room who can ball, someone needs to step up and be a go-to guy for Cade Klubnik. While they may not be ready yet, hearing players are on track is always a good sign.

“Y’all have heard me say – it’s Beaux (Collins), it’s Antonio (Williams), it’s Adam (Randall) and Cole (Turner) and it’s Spec (Brannon Spector). Those are five guys that we feel like we can go play anybody with,” Swinney said. So, it’s about really developing some elite depth after that and hopefully not having to start any of these guys, which we ended up having to do the last couple years. We had to start Beaux before he was really ready to start. We had to start Antonio. We’ve had to do that a little bit with injuries and stuff, so hopefully we can stay healthy and really bring these guys along at the proper pace and develop some elite depth.”

Clemson’s young wide receivers can focus on development rather than performance for the first time in a bit. Obviously, performance matters but practice performance and game performance are two different things. These young guys can do their work behind the scenes and develop rather than being thrust into playing time.

So far, so good for Clemson’s freshmen wide receivers.

Jersey numbers for every true freshman on Clemson’s roster

Clemson’s football team has a lot of new faces on its roster, so make sure you know who makes what play by learning their jersey numbers.

Clemson will kick off its 2023 season in under two months, and for roughly a quarter of the team’s roster, it will be their first collegiate football game.

The Tigers’ 2023 recruiting class, which consists of 26 commits, was ranked No. 11 in the nation, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Highlighted by five-star defensive tackle Peter Woods, four-star defensive lineman T.J. Parker and four-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, among others, Clemson’s freshmen class has players with high potential.

But, with so many new faces joining the team, it can be difficult to know who’s who in the first few games of the season.

To help fans keep track of those new faces, here are the jersey numbers for every Clemson true freshman on the roster, including walk-ons:

Updated 8/9

We are in full swing with the 2023 recruiting cycle, with this past month being a busy one for Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football program.

There have been ups and downs during the process, but the Tigers have had a great start in the 23′ class. Though the team has dealt with decommitments from four-star wide receiver Nathanial Joseph and three-star tight end Reid Mikeska, Clemson still ranks among the top of 247Sports 2023 recruit team rankings.

According to the 247Sports rankings, Friday’s addition of five-star defensive lineman Peter Woods has pushed Clemson up to the No.3 ranked class in the country with eleven commits and 260.28 total points.

Swinney and the Tigers are one of the hottest teams on the recruiting trail right now after snagging Woods from his home state and power house program, Alabama.

Here is a look at the Tigers’ current 2023 class with their 247Sports composite ranking:

Clemson lands commitment from top 2023 athlete

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and the Tigers just added a massive commitment to their 2023 class, with a four-star prospect likely to play receiver.

Clemson has landed a massive verbal commitment from one of the country’s top recruits.

After long being pegged by recruiting analysts to commit to Notre Dame, four-star athlete Ronan Hanafin took to Twitter on Sunday to announce his pledge to the Tigers. He chose Clemson over Alabama, Boston College and Notre Dame.

Hanafin is the No. 18 athlete in the class of 2023 and the No. 5 prospect coming out of Massachusetts, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

While recruiting websites list him as an athlete, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Hanafin was primarily recruited by Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham and will likely play at receiver for the Tigers.

“I really loved my time at Clemson for my official visit,” Hanafin told 247Sports. “The whole trip my entire family and I were treated like part of the Clemson family. One of the biggest takeaways was how genuine everyone was from Coach Swinney and Coach (Tyler) Grisham to my player host Cade Klubnik who I got to spend a lot of good time with. I heard lots of ‘Swinneyisms’ from all the coaches there and they really lined up with my beliefs.”

Assuming Hanafin does line up at receiver, his commitment marks Clemson’s second from a wide receiver prospect, the other being four-star Noble Johnson.

With Hanafin’s commitment, Clemson now has 20 verbal commitments to its 2023 recruiting class, two of which are five-stars and 15 of which are four-stars.

Clemson lands commitment from one of nation’s top athletes

Clemson has landed the verbal commitment of a top wide receiver prospect and Massaschutttes native.

Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (Cambridge, MA.) four-star Ronan Hanafin announced his commitment to the Tigers around 5:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Hanafin, a 6-foot-3, 206-pound rising senior, chose Clemson over his other three finalists — Alabama, Notre Dame and Boston College.

Hanafin, one of the best two-way players in the country, is considered to be the nation’s No. 13 athlete and No. 166 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per 247Sports. The multi-faceted athlete, who has a unique skill set and desired versatility, could theoretically be an elite safety or linebacker at the next level, but he’s coming to Clemson to play receiver.

After picking up an offer from Clemson during an unofficial visit on March 31, Hanafin returned for Clemson’s official visit weekend from June 3-5. It was then and there that Clemson and specifically Tyler Grisham outlined the role they envisioned Hanafin playing at the next level.

“They see me at the outside receiver spot with the versatility to play down inside as well,” Hanafin told The Clemson Insider at the time. “It was humbling to hear that they see me as exactly the type of player and person they are looking for.”

Clemson has viewed Hanafin as a priority from the get-go. Grisham stopped by Buckingham Browne & Nichols School during the evaluation period in the spring and even stayed for one of Hanafin’s lacrosse games.

We had the chance to talk with Hanafin after his official visit. Since then, he’s chosen to keep his recruitment private and close to the vest. But earlier this summer, Hanafin indicated that he loved everything Clemson had to offer and could see himself in that environment.

Hanafin becomes the second receiver to verbally pledge their commitment to Dabo Swinney’s program, joining Rockwall (Texas) four-star Noble Johnson. They’ll both have a chance to not only complement each other in Grisham’s room but catching passes from Briarwood Christain’s (Alabama) five-star quarterback commit Christopher Vizzina.

Hanafin is the 20th total commitment in the Tigers’ class, joining Johnson, Vizzina, Thompson (Alabama) High five-star defensive lineman Peter Woods, Warner Robins (Georgia) four-star defensive lineman Vic Burley, Rome (Georgia) four-star  defensive tackle Stephiylan Green, Woodward Academy (Georgia.) four-star defensive end A.J. Hoffler, St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.) four-star defensive end David Ojiegbe,  Eagle’s Landing Christian (Georgia) four-star offensive lineman Zechariah Owens, Permian (Texas) four-star offensive lineman Harris Sewell, Vandegrift (Texas) four-star offensive lineman Ian Reed, Westlake (Georgia) four-star cornerback Avieon Terrell, First Baptist Academy (Florida) four-star tight end Olsen Patt Henry, St. Francis (Georgia) four-star cornerback Branden Strozier, Sumner (Florida) four-star safety Kylen Webb, Mill Creek (Georgia) four-star linebacker Jamal Anderson, Denmark (Georgia) four-star linebacker Dee Crayton, Milton High (Georgia) four-star safety Rob Billings and Archbishop Wood (Pennsylvania) three-star tight end Markus Dixon.

“It’s the tightest family I have seen anywhere,” Hanafin said. “All-in is a good way to describe it. The coaches, the players, their families — everyone is all in.”

ESPN this week released its latest 2023 college football recruiting class rankings (subscription required).

Clemson’s 2023 class is currently ranked No. 6 by ESPN, behind Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas, Georgia and Penn State, in that order.

The Tigers, who were previously ranked No. 4 in ESPN’s 2023 recruiting class rankings, have seven ESPN 300 commits out of their 17 total pledges.

Birmingham (Ala.) Briarwood Christian School quarterback Christopher Vizzina is Clemson’s top-rated offensive commit, checking in at No. 40 overall in the ESPN 300 rankings, while Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson defensive tackle Peter Woods is the Tigers’ top defensive commit at No. 9 overall in the ESPN 300.

Here’s what ESPN staff writer Craig Haubert had to say about Clemson’s 2023 class:

Trevor Lawrence set a high bar, and replacing him is not easy, but the Tigers continue to add talented options under center. They signed the No. 2 overall quarterback in the 2022 cycle in Cade Klubnik and now landed ESPN 300 signal-caller Vizzina, a strong-armed, accurate and poised passer. Four-star WR Noble Johnson is a nice-sized target who is capable of creating problems with good explosiveness and the ability to break tackles after the catch. In the trenches, the Tigers have secured some very good talent. Offensively, Harris Sewell was a great pickup out of Texas. He is a flexible big man with good mobility who is also a physical finisher and should develop into a strong asset to the Tigers’ ground attack. The Tigers have recruited very well along the defensive line under Dabo Swinney. Woods was a huge get out of Alabama powerhouse program Thompson. One of the most explosive and disruptive DLs in the class, he reminds us of current Clemson standout DL Tyler Davis. David Ojiegbe is a powerful player who can be tough versus the run, and Vic Burley was a big win on the recruiting trail, as he is a multisport athlete in high school with good explosiveness and upside. At linebacker, Jamal Anderson is a rangy defender who can be a sideline-to-sideline presence.

Arkansas, LSU, Alabama and Tennessee round out the top 10 in ESPN’s 2023 recruiting class rankings, respectively, with Miami (No. 11) currently having the second highest-ranked class in the ACC behind Clemson.

The other ACC teams in the top 25 of ESPN’s 2023 recruiting class rankings are Louisville (No. 17) and North Carolina (No. 19).

Clemson’s 2023 class currently ranks No. 5 nationally by Rivals and No. 7 by 247Sports.

All In Cookout makes Clemson commit feel even better about decision to be a Tiger

Among the commitments in Clemson’s 2023 recruiting class who were on hand for Monday’s All In Cookout was Rockwall (Texas) High School four-star wide receiver Noble Johnson. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound rising senior had a blast at the Tigers’ signature …

Among the commitments in Clemson’s 2023 recruiting class who were on hand for Monday’s All In Cookout was Rockwall (Texas) High School four-star wide receiver Noble Johnson.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound rising senior had a blast at the Tigers’ signature summer recruiting event, and so did the family members who accompanied him.

When Johnson traveled to Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Camp in June, his father and two younger brothers came with him. This time around, Johnson’s mother and older sister made the trek from Texas to Tiger Town and got a taste of what Clemson is like during the cookout.

“I enjoyed it a lot,” Johnson told The Clemson Insider. “The first visit, I went with my dad and my two younger brothers, but my sister and my mom couldn’t go. But for the cookout, I took my mom and my sister, and they had an amazing experience. My mom fell in love with it. My sister loves it. She runs track. She’s going to a DII school in Oklahoma right now, and she was talking about how she wants to go to Clemson when she gets better at long jump and everything and try to run track for Clemson. But it was overall a great experience.”

The cookout itinerary included a Wiffle Ball home run derby, dodgeball, and trivia, and the recruits donned the purple jerseys for a three-hour photoshoot – which Johnson cited as the highlight of the cookout for him personally.

“For me, it was seeing everyone smile during the pictures,” he said. “But for others, the Wiffle Ball game, that was crazy fun. Playing dodgeball, that was super fun, seeing all the ‘old men,’ the coaches in their 50s moving around, doing some crazy athletic stuff. That was really funny. And then just talking, just having a great time with the coaches and just seeing everyone talk, that was really cool.”

Speaking of the coaches, members of the Tigers’ defensive staff joked that they want to have Johnson and his talent on defense, but Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham isn’t going to let it happen.

“Coach Grisham was talking about how the other coaches, defensive coaches, want me to go and make the switch to play on the defensive side of the ball,” Johnson said, “And Coach Grisham was like, ‘Nah, he’s going to be a receiver obviously.’ So, that was pretty funny.”

“But overall, we saw baby pictures of the coaches, like Coach Swinney, Coach Grisham,” Johnson continued. “I found out some stuff that was actually pretty funny about them both. It was nice.”

The All In Cookout gave Johnson a chance to continue building his relationships with not only the coaching staff, but also his fellow commits.

Johnson feels his bond with the coaches has been growing stronger, and he’s hit it off with the other future Tigers in Clemson’s 2023 class as well.

“My relationship with the coaches, it’s getting better,” he said. “We talk almost every day. We talk maybe five times a week. I talk every day with the commits. We have a group chat on Instagram, and everyone’s just getting along, everyone’s meshing together pretty well. We’re all finding similarities in each other, and we’re just going off of that.”

“They’re crazy funny,” Johnson added of his fellow commits. “The group chat is always blowing up. Everyone’s always typing… I love everyone that’s committed.”

As for the pair of uncommitted prospects who attended the cookout – Milton (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star safety Robert Billings and Stockbridge (Ga.) three-star cornerback Shelton Lewis – Johnson would love to see them jump on board with Clemson but believes the Tigers are in good shape regardless of whether they join the 2023 class.

“Hopefully we get them,” he said. “But at the same time, even if we don’t get them, say they choose another school, I feel like we’re still going to be set.”

Johnson earned an offer from Clemson after working out at the Swinney Camp on June 2 and then announced his commitment to the Tigers just nine days later.

As a junior, Johnson recorded 49 receptions for 875 yards and eight receiving touchdowns for Rockwall. The 2023 Under Armour All-America Game commitment is rated as a four-star prospect by ESPN, Rivals and the 247Sports Composite, and ranked as high as the No. 240 overall prospect in the 2023 class by Rivals.

According to Johnson, the Tigers plan to deploy him at the boundary receiver position.

“I’m going to be a boundary receiver, so I’m going to be working the short side of the field,” he said. “So wherever the ball is, I’m going to be on the short side of the field. So, just a boundary receiver.”

Overall, Johnson’s experience at Monday’s All In Cookout made him feel even better about his decision to be a Tiger.

“Oh yeah, most definitely,” he said. “It was just another trip back home. I’m excited I’m going to be there for the next four years.”

When might Johnson make another trip from the Lone Star State back to his future college home?

“I know I’m going to be back for a few of the games,” he said. “I don’t know when I’m going to take my official because Clemson still hasn’t scheduled their official visits yet, but hopefully I can get it in before December. That’s what they’re aiming for I believe.”

‘It feels amazing’: 4-star Texas WR talks Clemson commitment, what set Tigers apart

Noble Johnson is enjoying life as a Clemson commitment.

Johnson announced his verbal pledge to the Tigers last Saturday, June 11, and the four-star wide receiver from Rockwall (Texas) High School has quickly hit it off with his fellow commits in Clemson’s 2023 recruiting class.

Johnson is certainly happy about his college decision, which Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham played a big part in, traveling to Johnson’s school during the spring evaluation period and then making a push to help the Tigers land the top receiver prospect from the Lone Star State.

“It feels amazing,” Johnson said of his Clemson commitment in an interview with The Clemson Insider. “I love the fan base and I like all my teammates, being able to text them. I’m in a group chat with them, and everything that they say is funny. So, I really click with them, and I like them a lot.

“And what started it all was Coach Grisham. He came out to the school, he got me to go to the camp, and then from the camp I just realized that this is my place. The way they interacted with people, the way they talked to people and the way they treat you – they treat you as a man and they give you respect, too, and I really like that.”

Johnson earned an offer from Clemson after working out at the Dabo Swinney Camp on June 2, and publicly committed just nine days later.

Rockwall (Texas) 2023 4-star WR Noble Johnson during the afternoon session on Day 2 of the Dabo Swinney Camp Thursday, June 2

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound rising senior explained how he informed Swinney and Grisham of his commitment and what their reactions were.

“My parents were on the phone with Coach Grisham, so I told him then, and then I called Coach Swinney,” Johnson said. “He was on a morning jog, and I told him.”

“Coach Grisham, he was very excited,” Johnson added. “Just said they were going to do a lot of big things, and I was like, ‘I know we are.’ And then Coach Swinney stopped his jog and he started screaming, and that was funny.”

Johnson, who held more than 30 total offers, chose Clemson over his other four finalists – Arkansas, Louisville, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

“What set Clemson apart was Coach Grisham and Coach Swinney,” he said. “The way that they interacted with me at the camp, not even knowing who I was, and the way that they just held themselves – that really inspired me, I really like that. And seeing the players, how they held themselves and how they interacted with other people, I really like that. So, I knew it was going to be a great time, a great vibe if I went out there.”

Speaking of current Clemson players, Johnson already has a relationship with Tigers freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik, a fellow Lone Star State native who hails from Westlake High School in Austin, Texas.

The two have stayed in touch since they first met after a game last season and are actually planning to get together for a throwing session this weekend.

“I met him after the Lake Travis game, and he was asking me about Lake Travis,” Johnson said. “I told him everything about their defense. After that, we just kept in contact here and there. Then when he found out that I was committing to Clemson, he was hyped, and we’ve been texting.”

What can Clemson fans expect to see from him on the field in the future?

“They can expect a lot,” he said. “They’re going to see me burn people, they’re going to see me run over people, juke people, make amazing catches, make difficult catches, help the team convert third downs – just really everything. It’s going to be a show, and I’m giving it my all. It’s going to be a very fun time, it’s going to be nice to watch.”
