Waived vs. released: What’s the difference for NFL players and teams?

Explaining the difference for NFL players being waived vs. being released and what it means for the teams

As NFL teams furiously make their roster cutdowns in advance of the 53-man deadline, there are a couple of different terms used when a team severs ties with a player.

Some players are “released” while others are “waived.” And while the net effect on the active roster is the same, they do have different effects on the players themselves.

It’s a pretty simple distinction between being waived and being released.

Players with at least four accrued NFL seasons of service time are released. They’re vested veterans. When a player gets released, it’s the end of his contract. He becomes free to sign with any other team and the Lions have nothing to do with any compensation (other than any dead cap room) any longer. That’s what happened with vet OL Germain Ifedi, who has been in the NFL since 2016.

For players with less than four seasons of service time, they are waived. Players who are waived are subject to waiver wire claims. Right now, the waiver claim order is based on the draft order (before any trades) from April, so the Chicago Bears have the first claim. All teams file claims at the same period, and the team with the highest waiver wire position gets both the player and his existing contract. Detroit sits 18th in the waiver wire order, so they will only be successful in making a claim if the 17 teams above them all fail to place a waiver claim on the player.

The waived players include anyone still on a rookie contract. A broader way of looking at it ties into free agency. Any player who is not eligible for unrestricted free agent status entering the year is subject to waiver claims.

Ex-Lions OL Logan Stenberg claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears

Stenberg was waived by Detroit this week after three unimpressive seasons

A day after being waived by the Lions, offensive lineman Logan Stenberg has found a new NFL home. The fourth-year guard was claimed off waivers by the Lions’ NFC North rival in Chicago.

The Bears put in the top waiver claim for Stenberg. Detroit’s fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft out of Kentucky couldn’t ever translate his power and tenacity into functional enough blocking with the Lions to be more than a backup. He had fallen to the bottom of the team’s OL depth chart this summer, with endemic holding issues hindering Stenberg’s game.

The Bears waived rookie WR Aron Cruickshank to make room for Stenberg. Chicago has the top waiver claim position by virtue of finishing with the NFL’s worst record in 2022.

The Lions put in an unsuccessful waiver claim on DT Jerry Tillery

Tillery was claimed by the Raiders after being dumped by the Chargers

The Lions were looking to add another young player to the defensive line, but recent success made Detroit too good to land him.

Detroit was one of eight teams to place a waiver wire claim on former Chargers defensive tackle Jerry Tillery, who was waived over the weekend. Tillery is a 2019 first-round pick form Notre Dame who never panned out for the Chargers.

Tillery is now a member of the Las Vegas Raiders. The 2-7 Raiders had the worst record amongst the eight teams making a claim. Detroit is now 3-6 after winning two games in a row. The NFL’s waiver wire is based on the inverse order of records, meaning the team with the worst record gets priority.

Lions fans probably shouldn’t sweat missing out on Tillery, who has been the worst defensive tackle in the NFL over the last four years per Pro Football Focus grading,

Lions should have interest in ex-Rams S Terrell Burgess

Lions should have interest in ex-Rams S Terrell Burgess, drafted under now-Lions GM Brad Holmes

There were a couple of safeties waived in the NFL on Tuesday who carry some level of intrigue with Detroit Lions fans. One of them is a hard “no”, but the other is someone GM Brad Holmes and the Lions should strongly consider claiming off waivers.

The hard no comes for former Raiders first-rounder Johnathan Abram. Las Vegas dumped the No. 25 overall pick of the 2019 NFL draft, who has consistently been one of the lowest-ranked defenders per Pro Football Focus his entire career. PFF grades can be somewhat debatable, but Abram’s atrocious coverage grades certainly pass the eye test. His missed tackle rate of 15.3 for his career is higher than that of Lions LB Alex Anzalone, not someone noted for his tackling prowess.

Terrell Burgess is a different story. Burgess was dumped by the Rams in the middle of his third season. He was a third-round pick in 2020 out of Utah. Holmes was the man running the Rams scouting department back in that draft cycle, his last before joining the Lions right after the 2020 campaign ended.

Burgess has not done much in the NFL. Injuries have been an issue, most notably a broken ankle that ended his rookie season after seven games. He started one game, the Rams’ Week 5 loss to the Cowboys, and recorded nine tackles in the game. The Rams have a solid starting safety duo in Taylor Rapp and Nick Scott, blocking any real room for advancement or playing time.

With a contract that runs through 2023, Burgess would cost the Lions just under $1.1 million for next season and under $500,000 for the rest of 2022. While he’s not shown the third-round potential yet, the 23-year-old would be an inexpensive trial at a position where the Lions can use upgraded young depth. At minimum, Burgess is a better option than Brady Breeze to step up in case Ifeatu Melifonwu winds up on I.R. or is incapable of playing.

The Lions no longer have the No. 2 waiver claim priority

The NFL doesn’t use last year’s draft order to determine the waiver wire claim order after Week 3

One of the perks of coming off a dismal 3-13-1 season for the Lions was that Detroit held the No. 2 priority spot in the NFL’s waiver claim process. If they put a claim in on a player who was waived, that player came to Detroit unless the Jacksonville Jaguars also claimed him with their No. 1 status.

Detroit snagged DT Benito Jones off waivers from the Dolphins after the initial roster cutdowns this year, but the high claim order really paid off with DL John Cominsky. No fewer than 11 teams put claims in on Cominsky after the Falcons waived him this summer, but the Lions landed him on the basis of having the No. 2 spot.

Now that has changed. The NFL realigns the waiver wire claim order based on records after Week 3. Instead of using last year’s draft order (before trades), it’s now based on 2022 records.

The Lions are in a gaggle of teams grouped at 1-2, but then the strength of schedule in 2022 factors in. Detroit is tied for 14th with the Commanders — who they beat in Week 2 — and the Patriots. If more than one team puts a claim in on a player, it’s decided by a coin flip.

5 Lions players revert to the team’s IR list after going unclaimed on waivers

5 Lions players revert to the team’s IR list after going unclaimed on waivers, including WR Trinity Benson

When the Detroit Lions reduced the roster on Tuesday from 80 down to 53 players, they used a technicality with five players. They were all designated as waived/injured.

Those five players are now back on the Lions roster and payroll, at least temporarily. When they went unclaimed on Wednesday, the quintet reverted to the Lions’ injured reserve list.

DT Eric Banks

WR Trinity Benson

DL Jashon Cornell

OL Kevin Jarvis

S C.J. Moore

All are officially out for the season for Detroit. However, the players could accept an injury settlement with the Lions and play for another team later in the year.

The Jaguars have claimed former Lions K Riley Patterson off waivers

The Jaguars have claimed former Lions K Riley Patterson off waivers

The Detroit Lions waived 13 players on Tuesday who were eligible to be claimed by another NFL team off the waiver wire. Of that baker’s dozen, only one wound up being claimed.

The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed kicker Riley Patterson. Jacksonville claimed five players overall, making liberal usage of their status with the top waiver wire claim priority. The Jaguars have shuffled kickers several times this offseason.

Patterson lost the training camp battle in Detroit to veteran Austin Seibert. He played the final seven games for the Lions in 2021 after being signed off the New England Patriots practice squad as an undrafted rookie from Memphis. Patterson nailed 13 of his 14 field goal attempts and did not in his 16 extra point conversions.

The remaining 12 players who cleared waivers are now eligible to sign to the Lions practice squad. That list includes sixth-round rookie James Houston and preseason hero Tom Kennedy.

Lions claim DT Benito Jones off waivers

Jones is in his third NFL season from Ole Miss and joins Detroit after being waived by Miami

The Detroit Lions added some beef to the defensive front on Wednesday. The Lions claimed defensive tackle Benito Jones off waivers from the Miami Dolphins.

It was the only waiver claim made by the Lions, who hold the No. 2 slot in the wire order.

Jones is entering his third NFL season. He joined the Dolphins in 2020 as an undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss. The 329-pound Jones played in six games as a rookie in Miami, notching one tackle in 48 total snaps. He spent the 2021 season on the Dolphins’ practice squad. The Dolphins waived Jones in the roster cutdowns on Tuesday.

The Lions have yet to announce the corollary roster move to create a spot for Jones.

Browns claim QB Kellen Mond off waivers from the Vikings

The Cleveland Browns claim QB Kellen Mond off waivers from the Vikings

The quarterback room in Cleveland has changed dynamics once again. The Browns placed a successful waiver claim on QB Kellen Mond, who was waived by the Vikings on Tuesday.

Mond was a third-round pick by the Vikings in 2021 out of Texas A&M but never clicked with then-coach Mike Zimmer. The new Minnesota regime led by former Browns personnel man Kwesi Adofo-Mensah also didn’t see enough to keep Mond around through the initial 53-man roster cutdowns.

Mond joins a Browns QB room that currently features starter Jacoby Brissett and backup Josh Dobbs, with Deshaun Watson not counting against the roster limit while he serves his 11-game NFL suspension.

5 players the Browns should claim off waivers

Of the hundreds of players that hit the waiver wire, here are 5 that the Browns should look to make a claim on:

The Cleveland Browns have set their initial 53-man roster but it is likely that roster will change 24 hours later. With hundreds of players flooding the free agent market and waiver wire, the Browns have a chance to shuffle their roster and add talent at important positions.

While the team could look to add a wide receiver or defensive tackle, that doesn’t mean they would subtract a player from those same positions.

There were a couple of veterans that could interest the team that we covered yesterday: TE O.J. Howard and S Anthony Harris.

Today we take a look at the waiver wire. Twelve teams get priority over Cleveland for players that they may want but that doesn’t mean we can’t identify a few that the team should claim.

Teams must submit their waiver claims by no later than noon today with the official awarding happening at 4 PM this afternoon. We should start to hear some information close to the noon deadline.

Here are five players the Browns should put a claim in on:
